shooting. >> bullet holes mark this area. where police shot and killed a man wednesday night in hayward. >> it sounded like the end of the 4th of july fireworks. it's all boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. that's all you heard. rapid fire. >> angela koontz lives on the streets and was sleeping in this structure on city center drive behind the safeway and starbucks on foothill boulevard. officers say they responded to a report of a man with a gun. koontz described her time with that man who she says is also unhoused on wednesday. >> and he was up in here last night drinking with a fake gun like a fake gun, a fake gun in his backpack. and like i think he might have pulled it wanting suicide by cop. >> police confirmed to us that the man had a gun and he he's not complying. >> he's walking away from us towards the old city hall parking structure. >> at least one witness saw the man point a firearm in the direction of officers and an

officer involved. shooting resulted. >> bullets broke through these windows right here, which has since been covered up by this plywood board. but we were here earlier and we could see that those bullets nearly hit a computer inside just before the shooting. officers can be heard on scanner traffic talking about a shoplifting case at safeway, chased them out of the story is about two officers aren't saying if the suspect was involved in the shoplifting, only that they responded to the report of a man with a gun in this area. koontz is upset. >> i didn't even hear them say, stop, wait, put it down. nothing like all you heard was hey. and shots fired. >> police haven't said how many shots were fired. and the name of the man killed has not been released. in hayward, j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> right now, san francisco police are holding a virtual town hall meeting on a fatal police shooting that happened last month. >> abc seven news anchor karina nova joining us live in the newsroom with exactly what

police are saying. karina >> larry and kristin in that town hall, which is still happening right now, sfpd is sharing video and information about the shooting of a man armed with a knife on august 28th in the tenderloin. that man identified as 54 year old richard everett, was shot on jones street at eddy, sfpd. officers were wearing body cameras and police showed some of that video of the incident today. you can see here when police arrive and they see everett holding a large knife. you can hear police asking everett to put the knife down. many times to whichever it responds. no the people who called police say everett was threatening people. police say they tried to get everett to put the knife down and surrender for about 20 minutes with his left hand. >> mr. everett held a milk crate and the duffle bag in front of his face with the right hand. mr. everett raised the knife and swung it back and forth as he continued to move toward the officers. multiple officers yelled out, quote, red light,

dak dashcam, end quote. all four officers used force in this order. officer number five deployed in officer number two deployed an officer. number three discharged his department issued firearm. officer number four discharged. his department issued firearm. multiple officers yelled, quote, shots fired, end quote. end quote. drop the knife, end quote. as mr. everett fell to the ground, officers formed an arrest team and apprehended mr. everett, who was lying on his stomach. mr. everett's knife was on the ground next to his right hand. officers observed that the knife appeared to be tied or tethered to mr. everett's right wrist with a belt. >> officials say eventually more than one officer opened fire after being shot. everett was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. he died shortly after that. san

francisco police chief william scott says the point of this town hall is to be more transparent with the public when it comes to these types of incidents in the newsroom. karina nova, abc seven news. >> karina, thank you. a second gun has been recovered and a third juvenile charged today in connection with the shooting at oakland's skyline high school. the school was put on lockdown on tuesday after the shooting on campus. two people were arrested. a gun was found at the school on tuesday. police now say they arrested a third person and they found another gun. yesterday. investigators won't say if they're students. nobody was injured in the shooting. >> a grass fire in vallejo came dangerously close to homes this afternoon. you can see smoke still rising from the fire less than an hour ago near benicia road and banning way. it appears only a few cars and outbuildings were damaged. >> there's a new push to combat fentanyl deaths in the south bay. vta officials will vote to decide on whether to put narcan on their vehicles. abc7 news south bay reporter zach fuentes has a look at the plan. >> fentanyl overdose deaths have

been a problem plaguing the south bay. we have had a death as young as three months old from fentanyl poisoning all the way up to you know, middle aged adults. now a referral by county supervisor cindy chavez aims to put overdose reversal treatment narcan on vta busses, light rail cars and transit stations. chavez is also a vice chair on vta's board of directors. >> we want to make narcan available and make it ubiquitous , really anywhere that people are. >> this vta passenger who did not want to go on camera says he recently witnessed what he believes was an overdose on a bus. >> the paramedics came and had to take him off the bus and he was unconscious. and i don't know what happened to him after that, but i think that if he was dying, that narcan on the bus could have helped. >> we also spoke with other public transit users who support the possibility. >> i don't see any downsides to it if it can, you know, potentially save someone's life. >> but some have reservations, including some vta employees. i spoke with one who did not want to go on camera. vta passenger william was also part of that

conversation. i got a big education here today. >> the concern center around the pressure it could put on vta employees during an emergency, like giving mouth to mouth or something like that. it could be impacting your whole life. and now you see somebody overdosing on drugs and you don't know exactly if you're doing the right thing at the right time. >> chavez says training, education and support will be key. >> very easy to use. it's a nasal spray that can be sprayed very quickly, and it's intended to keep spraying as you keep the person alert until help arrives and because of that, the training is not long. it's not complicated. and while i think it could for some people feel like a lot of pressure, i think for others it will feel like an opportunity to help. >> for now, the referral would direct vta staff to look into the possibility of equipping vehicles and centers with narcan if the board votes in favor of doing that thursday night, they would work with the transit union on the best ways to start the program. if that happens, chavez hopes vta will have the narcan by the beginning of next year. in san jose, zach fuentes,

abc7 news. >> help is available in the south bay for those who might have trouble paying for a vital prescription medications. santa clara county has launched a program called med assist to help cover the cost of things like diabetes medication, asthma inhalers and epipen. it's open to people of all ages as the county is inviting people to apply. since it has launched, about 1400 people have enrolled . one of those enrollees shared the difference it has made in her life. i am a diabetic and i have asthma, so i'm fortunate enough to get a payment for two medications and i would encourage anybody to apply for this program. there are income caps, so not everyone qualifies . as a family of four is eligible. they make under $250,000 per year for individuals, the threshold is $100,000. >> psychedelic apps such as magic mushrooms are one step closer to being decriminalized in california yesterday, the state assembly voted in favor of

a bill that would allow people age 21 and up to possess and use small amounts of psychedelics. that bill now heads to the state senate. let's association that aims to get more affordable housing built in california. also, one step closer to becoming law today, the assembly passed senate bill four that allows faith institutions and nonprofit colleges to build affordable housing on their land, even if local zoning prevents it. >> a new state senate bill could help striking workers like writers guild workers who have been on strike since may 1st. yeah, this just seems to be going on and on and on. >> reporter sid garcia from our sister station in los angeles has the details. >> 799 outside amazon studios in culver city. striking actors and writers rallied, urging support for california senate bill 799. it is beyond time for striking workers for all workers to have this tiny bit of relief during something as stressful and as powerful as a strike. the bill, if passed, means striking actors and writers, would be eligible

strike has been going on for nearly two months. there were talks between the studios and the two unions recently, but so far no deal is imminent. outside the warner brothers studios, clergy joined the picket lines, praying that the strike will end soon. >> the match is set for today is sitting in the table and trying to do some solution as soon as possible. >> now that sb 799 is out of committee, i'm told it could be on the governor's desk for his signature by next friday. in culver city, outside amazon studios, i'm sid garcia, abc seven news. >> back here, bart is rolling out some big service changes. starting monday, bart says it will run more trains. bart says no rider will have to wait more than 20 minutes for a scheduled train. people can expect a 50% increase in evening service service on bart's busiest weekday line. the yellow line will increase from running every 15 minutes to every ten minutes from pittsburgh bay point.

south of market for the filipino community. >> miles away, an example of another possibility for revitalization at stonestown galleria, a new state of the art bowling alley just announced it's moving into the mall's old nordstrom space. round one features bowling karaoke and an arcade chain. could something like that go into the recently vacated nordstrom space in the old westfield mall? possibly as mayor? breed strategy looks to facilitate new uses and flexibility in buildings, while new venues and events could be an answer to bringing more people downtown, many leaders say it's still about bringing workers back to the office. earlier this week, lyft doing just that three days a week. >> we're excited for san francisco, though, and to see the impact as companies, more and more companies are returning to san francisco, how that helps the city as well. >> the mayor says a key part of downtown san francisco's recovery is attracting big conferences and conventions. of course, we're going to have

dreamforce coming up. that brought 40,000 attendees last year and then in november, san francisco will host apec, the global economic summit. live in the newsroom, suzannephan abc7 news. that's a big deal in the whole world will be watching. >> suzanne thank you. construction for dreamforce is in full swing in downtown san francisco. the annual salesforce conference kicks off tuesday, but howard street between third and fourth streets has been closed. all week for construction. dreamforce is one of the biggest tech events in the world, drawing an estimated 40,000 people to the city. look at what they're building there. >> the rock strikes the whole city. 11 businesses have been added to san francisco legacy business registry. mitchell's ice cream in noe valley is one of them. that creamery has been in operation for more than 30 years. that is a requirement, by the way, for legacy status along with being, quote, culturally vital to the city. there are two irish pubs on the list, the dubliner in noe valley and the irish bank bar and restaurant in the financial district. two restaurants frascati on russian

absolutely gorgeous weather today. >> and kristen and larry, we're going to keep that going, but we're going to take the temperatures up a few degrees the next few days. let me show you a live picture from our santa cruz camera where it's a good day to be out on the coast and look at all the sun out there just absolutely lovely weather as we check out live. doppler seven, most areas seeing the sun. there are a few patches of fog lingering near the coast which we had expected. now i want to show you the wider picture. so what's going to happen is this trough that's been dominating our weather is going to push off high pressure is going to nudge west just a little bit. and that will allow us to warm up beginning today, tomorrow, but also the rotation or the flow around the high, i should say, is clockwise. and that may draw up some moisture from current hurricane jova. it's a major category four storm form. the good news is we're not expecting this to be a repeat of the previous hurricane. it's going to move out over the open water to weaken. and so we're

out helping game plan against somebody else. yeah. this is a great story. >> steve is helping coach a bay area high school team. this is not just any old team. this team is making history. oh, yay. it's a new era on the field at menlo school as girls are getting the opportunity to play flag football this year. but look closely. prowling the sideline line in a bucket hat is anxious father and 40 niners legend steve young, two of the former quarterbacks daughters are following in his footsteps as i never thought one of my daughters would come to me and ask me to teach them how to throw a football. >> it was super important for him to play. i loved that they wanted to, you know, my boys didn't really want to, and that's fine. >> one daughter, lila, is on the junior varsity team. she chose to wear number 23. summer is a senior and she opted to wear a more familiar number. her dad's number eight. but she chose to play wide receiver because in her words, she likes to run. and

as a quarterback and flag football, well, you can't do that as for whose idea it was for the young sisters to play football, it didn't come from steve. this was all about the girls 100. >> i've always wanted to do this. i was ecstatic when the news came out that it would be a sport. >> so what's it like to step on the field when your dad isn't all time great and looking over your shoulder? >> i was nervous at the beginning. i was nervous because i didn't want to let down my dad. >> maybe it was meant to be because when you listen to summer talk about playing the game, it conjures up memories of her father. steve was known for being fiery, and it sure sounds like that gene got passed on. i'm probably more competitive person than he is, which says a lot, but we like we work well together. >> he pushes me and i can take it. >> as for steve, sounds like he's more than happy to be a girl. dad and watch his daughters enjoy the moment. >> it's a joy to see them feel included in something that they've always loved and didn't have and didn't have an

separate civil trials against former president donald trump are set to move forward as early as next month. abc news reporter justin finch has a look at both cases. >> a new york state judge rejecting former president donald trump's request to delay the new york state attorney general's quarter. billion dollar civil fraud trial. judge arthur engoron responding in a one sentence handwritten order, declined to sign defendants. arguments are completely without merit. that trial now set to begin in less than a month. >> we are filing a lawsuit

against donald trump for violating the law as part of his efforts to generate profits for himself, his family and his company. >> new york attorney general letitia james suing trump, his eldest sons, and the trump organization, in alleging trump executives and others inflated his net worth by billions in some years in an effort to lock in better terms on loans and insurance. trump and the other defendants have denied any wrongdoing in new york city. another legal blow. federal judge lewis kaplan setting january 15th, 2024, as the trial date for a former magazine columnist. jean carroll's second defamation suit against trump. carroll accused trump of raping her in a bergdorf goodman department store dressing room in the 1990s. and then defaming her after she went public with the claim in may. a jury found trump liable for sexual misconduct and defamation against carroll in the first lawsuit awarding her $5 million
