quicker warm up with sunny skies. 70 to near 80, around the bay shore near 90 inland jobina. >> thank you, lisa. good morning, everybody. now that it's 6:00, i wanted to check back in for you on the bay bridge toll plaza. it is still empty. no metering lights, so you're in great shape if you need to travel into san francisco. same thing goes in the south bay. i'm bringing you these same cameras that we showed you about 30 minutes or so ago because those are our busiest stretches. believe it or not, on the map. same thing goes for this round of dry times. and we'll end here with a look at our sensors. you can see we only really have two red patches. everything else is green, which is great news for your ride. >> all right. thanks, jobina. if you take bart, a big change is coming to your commute. starting on monday. bart is changing its schedule up, hoping that this will improve service for everybody. abc7 news reporter ryan curry live in walnut creek this morning with what you can expect. good morning, ryan jacobazzi. >> good morning. bart is expecting to run trains more frequently throughout its system, especially here on the yellow line which runs here in

walnut creek. a lot of people can start to see trains running as close to about ten minutes apart starting on monday. they will see these changes. there will be no longer those half hour wait times, more trains will be running at night as well . the trains on the yellow line, as mentioned, will be running every ten minutes until 9 p.m. on weekdays. and there will also be nine trains per hour going to and from sfo until 9 p.m. bart says these changes are designed to adjust to the post-pandemic commute style. bart will also be getting rid of its old trains. only the new ones will be used. they say the new trains will have better surveillance on board that will make things safer. trains will also be smaller. bart says having shorter trains makes it easier to patrol and also easier to run more frequently. we know bart ridership has not been the same since the pandemic. the numbers are still lower. moments ago, we did speak with a bart spokesperson about these changes . >> is the schedule that begins on monday is more consistent

throughout the seven days. it's easier to follow. it's simpler. we're going to have shorter trains, but the wait for 30 minutes is over. no more 30 minute waits. you'll never have to wait more than 20 minutes no matter what day it is. >> bart says the new schedule should also appeal to those post-pandemic style of riders and maybe get more people riding bart. also, the goal is to save money with this. end denver by running these new trains. they say they're more energy efficient and also by running them at this new style. they estimate they're going to be saving about 12 million a year with this new schedule change. we're live in walnut creek. ryan curry, abc seven news. thank you, ryan. >> a woman accused of illegally smuggling a tropical fruit from vietnam into santa clara county is due to be in court today. 36 year old tan juan and another woman are charged with conspiracy to import and sell fruit in violation of federal and state agricultural laws. now some of this fruit was infested

with fruit flies. officials say it happened sometime last year. the shipment was allegedly mislabeled as dried fish, coffee and tea to avoid inspection. the district attorney's office says the woman sold the fruit on facebook marketplace. >> time is running out for a man to get his sailboat off this north bay beach before authorities come in and chop it up. the boat is stranded on stinson beach in marin county after washing ashore at the end of july. logan walker has until noon monday to get it out to sea. you have helped plan to get the boat out of the sand. >> yeah, it could be out of here real, real soon. how soon are the next tide, walker? >> who calls himself captain, left federal court without shoes after getting a temporary restraining order, buying him some more time. he was on his way to seattle when his boat got stuck. the boat is certainly a hot topic in marin county with some wondering what's taking so long. the captain is worried the county could ruin his boat and

affect the environment, too. >> my view is way better than theirs ever was. their fix to the problem is cut up my boat, which is really bad for the environment. >> yesterday, walker went to sausalito to get more supplies. if the boat is still there at noon monday, the sheriff's office will come in and make a plan to get it out. developer news involving the search for a convicted killer caught on camera escaping from a prison in pennsylvania. >> he's been spotted more than half a dozen times, but still hasn't been caught. jobina is tracking the latest at the live desk. jobina >> thank you. coomassie good morning. neighbors are frustrated with how long the search is taking. darnell cavalcanti escaped more than a week ago. video from inside the pennsylvania prison shows the 34 year old scaling a wall to get out. officials say the guard in the observation tower is now on administrative leave. authorities are investigating the eighth credible sighting of cavalcanti. sources tell our philadelphia sister station kpvi, the fugitive was spotted

on another trail camera. it's the same area he was spotted in on monday. residents there were told to shelter in place as a precaution. >> this has been going on for a week now. i'm has to be beyond frustrating. it's insane. >> i mean, it really is insane. and i don't know what to tell you. i mean, special ops. get him in here. anything. whatever it takes, however it takes. >> i believe he becomes more desperate. we will eventually capture him. and when we do, he's going to prison. >> cavalcanti was convicted of killing his ex girlfriend in front of her two children. he has eluded hundreds of law enforcement officers since he broke out of the chester county prison. the reward for information leading to his capture is now at $20,000. reggie jobina, thank you. >> new developments with a viral internet challenge known as the one chip challenge. the company behind this tortilla chip is now taking action. it comes as a family is blaming their son's death on this challenge. they say their 14 year old died the

three times. the president of the a's sent a letter to the african american sports and entertainment group saying that they're, quote, not interested in selling or otherwise disposing of our interests in the coliseum. as we've reported before, esg has a multi-billion dollar redevelopment proposal that includes housing, restaurants and a new convention center. leaders in san jose have decided to postpone an important decision on land that could be used to provide homes for the unhoused. the property sits right off zanker road. a lengthy discussion at last night's vta board meeting led to a number of changes to the proposal that would result in san jose leasing land. among the changes, san jose mayor matt mehan is asking for a five year lease. the new plan is to revisit the proposal at the next meeting. mayor mehan has said if this gets the green light, the project could open sometime next year. >> a bay area housing nonprofit is getting a financial boost as it races to turn property into affordable housing. philanthropist mackenzie scott donated. $20 million to the san

francisco community land trust. scott is amazon founder jeff bezos's ex-wife. the nonprofit keeps ownership of land to maintain affordability for low and moderate income san franciscans, according to the chronicle, the nonprofit also announced a new $60 million capital campaign. >> a beloved san francisco boutique is closing its store in the marina district just a year after their noe valley location was shut down. the owners of ambiance say they're retiring. according to our media partners at sf standard, donna and kieran o'leary are calling the decision bittersweet. the marina location will close for good in mid october. the inner sunset location will close at the same time, but it'll actually reopen with new owners. according to the ambiance facebook page, the new owners are two longtime employees. >> a japanese fine dining experience experience funded through nfts will no longer be open in salesforce park. the transbay joint powers authority and the show group confirmed the failed plans to sfgate. the original plan was to open two

fine dining restaurants, along with a market and a members only club show group's ceo said multiple challenges made the plans flop, including high construction costs and investor concerns about san francisco. 19 year old coco gauff is now just one win away from becoming a grand slam champion in golf beat karolina muchova and straight sets to advance. she's the youngest american to reach the us open final since serena williams did it in 1999 at 17. williams went on to win, which was the first of her 23 major singles titles. gauff will be playing for the champions tomorrow afternoon at 1:00, and you can watch that on our sister network, espn. >> as many as 12,000 people are expected in downtown san francisco tonight. it's for the final bhangra and beats night market on battery street. it goes tonight from 5 to 10. and then next weekend, there's a big filipino block party off of excuse me, off of market called

undiscovered sf, a major pillar of the downtown recovery strategy is to bring arts and culture and nightlife to downtown and to make it a destination for all of those different activities across the city. another example of possible revitalize ization a new state of the art bowling alley just announced it is moving into the mall's old nordstrom space at stonestown mall round one features bowling, karaoke and an arcade. >> well, we've been hearing about businesses and restaurants leaving san francisco, but there also are a lot of businesses picking up and bars. pasetta is one of them, looking to revitalize the city and bring in a fresh atmosphere. so this restaurant and bar brings coastal italy to the heart of san francisco. and i spoke with one of the partners and mixologists about the ambiance of bars. pasetta, what do you think? is it about this space that makes people feel like they're really getting away? >> it's very bright and the interior design, they did a

in a very cozy. the seats are nice and plush. the food is deliciously soft. >> oh yeah. i need to check that out for sure. all right. good morning, everybody. check this out. this satellite picture of hurricane jova, which is just amazing. isn't that a beautiful view from space? and as we get a little closer to the bay area, there's no fog at all. but this will influence part of southern california, the central coast, with some clouds and maybe a few sprinkles to the southern sierra to monterey, san benito county. for the bay area, we are still looking at our gradual warming trend, but we could see some higher clouds perhaps with that system late on saturday. but overall, it is going to miss us and we'll be watching it for the rest of the state in case you're camping or south of us or traveling. here's a look at a beautiful sky here where you can see it's nice and clear. 57 downtown, 54 in oakland, 60 in san jose. half moon bay is at 50, partly cloudy there in the airport. oakland clear sky temperatures ranging from the upper 40s. santa rosa little fog there half mile visibility 60 by

the delta southwest wind at 12. so that has backed off 57 in concord and we'll look at the fog fading away quickly in the north bay there's a little at the coast and we're looking at sunny and warmer days today, tomorrow, sunday into monday, the warmest days, sunday and monday. so highs today ranging from the mid 60s with some sun here, half moon bay, pacifica montara you get the sea breeze in the afternoon we're near average in the city at 70 low 80s san rafael wine country at about 80 upper 80s to near 90. so that's about four degrees warmer than yesterday in our inland valleys and into the south bay. you'll notice those low 80s in san jose. so peninsula numbers coming up just a few degrees upper 70s and as if you are getting ready and checking out the oakland pride parade tonight, sunday, temperatures in the upper 60s at 11:00 going through the upper 70s. so a nice afternoon there but plan on it being a little warmer there and as well for us into the weekend especially sunday jobina. >> thank you, lisa. good morning, everybody. so we are

8th. >> know you're worth. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> all right. good morning, everybody. we are looking at a very nice weekend, if you like it. just a little bit warmer now. we will have the sea breeze. so if you're not a fan of the heat, then you have that breeze going for you and even some patchy fog in the morning. but you can see it's clear here, 59 in mountain view, 57 in the city, 54 in oakland and 53 in palo alto. as we look at our sutro tower camera, just a few puffs of fog there and we'll be about 70 today. downtown, 49, santa rosa, it is 54 in novato. so temperatures are cooler overall even though they seem pretty typical. right. upper 50s to near 60. you can see the 24 hour temperature change 2 to 7 degrees cooler. and as we go through the 9:00 hour, pretty much all in the 60s except at the coast there is that fog, the golden gate bridge. but that pulls back and we have sunshine half moon bay, pacifica. it's 1:00 and it is mild and winds are lighter. at 1:00. but then that sea breeze kicks up low 60s, half moon bay near 90 inland and the fog coming back

after about 4 or 5:00. so it will be patchy as well that marine layer compressed and that's going to aid in our quick warm up jobina. >> thank you, lisa. good morning, everybody. we are going back to oakland because we are still following a pretty significant backup. now this is on westbound 24 past northbound 13 on your speeds down to 22mph. and you can see if you were with us about 20 minutes ago or so that the backup has extended there at the bay bridge toll plaza. surprisingly metering lights are on the chp just updated the log and says that they flipped them on around 549. but there is no backup there at all. it's a little busier in walnut creek as we show you 680. those tail lights are traveling in the southbound direction. reggie, thanks, jobina. >> a crash between a san francisco police vehicle and another car closed off 18th street near guerrero overnight. you can see both cars, front bumpers got most of the damage. we're told this crash happened around 1130 and we don't think anyone was hurt here. >> psychedelics like magic

mushrooms are one signature away from decriminalized here in california. yesterday a final senate vote sent that bill to the governor's desk. abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez joining us live in the newsroom with this story. hi, gloria. >> good morning, carmassi. the measure would allow people 21 and older to possess and use small amounts of psychedelics. this is not the only bill moving through the state legislature that would ease drug laws here in california. the state assembly and senate voted to decriminalize some psychedelics like magic mushrooms. state senator scott wiener has been championing the bill for several years. opponents say that hallucinogens can cause paranoia and psychological trauma, but senator wiener believes that everyone from combat veterans with ptsd to those who suffer from disorders like anxiety and depression could benefit. >> they're not a panacea. this is not a silver bullet. but there are plenty of people who have literally been able to turn

their lives around because of psychedelics. >> california should be a destination for cannabis just like it is for wine. and one of the things that is holding us back from that right now is we can't really offer a cannabis experience that is legal, that is safe, that is regulated. >> state assembly member matt haney supported senator wiener's legislation and is also advocating for his own with the state senate passed yesterday, it would allow certain cannabis retailers to sell food and beverages, creating cannabis cafes like those in amsterdam and needs one more vote before heading to the governor. the psychedelic legislation will not become law until governor newsom signs the legislation. some of the public still have concerns about this, but senator wiener believes that they can work together to find solutions that work for everyone. live in the newsroom, gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. thanks, gloria. >> if you ride bar, you're going to notice some changes starting on monday. the agency is planning to run more trains. it

should mean your commute will be smoother and shorter. abc seven news reporter ryan curry is live in walnut creek with the details of the service changes. ryan >> yeah. reggie the longest wait time will be 20 minutes for riders taking part throughout system wide. the goal right here is to make it more efficient for anybody riding bart now and also accommodate the new style of riders. there's a lot less. people are now taking bart's and also their hope is to make it easier for anybody who is taking bart. there will be a 20 minute maximum wait for trains now. no more. will you see those half hour wait times. more trains will be running at night as well. trains on the yellow line will be running every 10 to 15 minutes on weekdays. on weekends , trains on the richmond line will run every ten minutes. bart ridership has been dramatically lower compared to pre pre pre-pandemic levels excuse me. more people are returning to bart, but lately on weekdays they're still at about 40% of what it was before covid. it is

not just the schedule also being changed. bart is reducing the size of its trains to make it easier for police to patrol them while also allowing trains to run more frequently. moments ago, we spoke with the bart spokesperson about these changes. so what we did in terms of matching the schedule to the lines is we examined the commute patterns. >> we looked at how it would work. so the yellow line here in walnut creek, for instance, is going to have very frequent service for people on some of the other lines. they'll need to get used to transferring, but they'll be able to do their trips as efficiently as before if they make the transfers and essentially, no matter where you are in the system, you'll find a train into san francisco every ten minutes. >> the transfers, though, will be much more timely, according to them, when it comes to this new schedule, they say they will be lined up very close together and hopefully should run, be very smoothly. bart will also be getting rid of its old trains. you'll only be seeing the new

style trains from here on out. bart says the goal behind that is to make sure that things run more efficient. they say the old trains kept breaking down, therefore leading to delays. but now with this new system, they hope things should run more smoothly and also save money in the long run. we're live in walnut creek. ryan curry, abc seven news. thank you, ryan. >> an investigation is underway after hayward police officers shot and killed a man on wednesday night. the department's acting chief says officers responded to a report of a man with a gun near a parking garage. he says the man who was unhoused refused orders to drop the weapon and that officers opened fire when he pointed it at them. officers later determined the weapon was a b-b gun. angela koontz lives on the streets and knew the man and he was up in here last night drinking with a fake gun. >> like a fake gun. a fake gun in his backpack. and like i think he might have pulled it wanting suicide by cop. >> she says she did not hear the officer say, stop, wait or put

life saving rescue mission thousands of feet underground. mark dickey, a scientist from new jersey, was part of an expedition to map the cave when he suddenly got sick, he developed internal bleeding on saturday. he couldn't eat and was in desperate need of medical attention. three days later, rescuers, including doctors, finally reached him, bringing him six pints of blood. the 40 year old, who is still described as, quote, very sick, was seen in this video after medical help arrived and up. >> i'm alert. i'm talking, but i'm not healed on the inside yet. so i need a lot of help to get out of here. involves crawling through squeezes, turning your body sideways. >> then there's water passage is it's muddy, it's wet, it's cold. everything is hard. rock it's exhausting. >> that's a cave. rescue expert described the treacherous journey out of the cave. 3400ft underground and is described as narrow and dangerous. and one of the most difficult cave systems in the world under ideal

conditions, it would take about 15 hours to reach the surface. but if he needs to be carried out on some sort of a stretcher, it could take up to two weeks to lower the stretcher down and bring it back up. dickey's team can communicate with people on the surface, but messages take about five hours to reach them just unbelievable. reggie the story i just cannot wrap this around my head. >> that is wild. thank you. happening today, a trial will start for the man accused of attacking a former san francisco fire commissioner. garrett doherty is accused of striking don carmignani with a metal rod. the incident happened in the marina on april 5th. doherty's lawyer says that he was acting in self defense. they claim a release video shows carmignani starting the altercation by spraying doherty, who is unhoused with bear spray. >> new at six. levi's air daniel laurie is gearing up to make an announcement. he's expected to share that he's running for san francisco's mayor. our media
