case, for schools to close. >> and i can't believe we got to go through all this again while the covid surge is being watched by health officials, san francisco unified says no changes will be made to their safety guidelines in place since last march. >> we are continuing to follow the state and local guidance. so masking is encouraged in schools but not required. we can provide masking to schools as they need to hand out to students and to staff. we also continue to share resources with families such as where they can get vaccinations and access other resources to support them, to help parents remember those guidelines. >> the school district is sending weekly tips to follow. >> what are the appropriate action steps to take when your students have some sort of illness? and when can you send them to school to be clear, even if the student was exposed to covid, unless symptoms develop, that student may continue to stay at school. >> students who test positive should stay home. no test is required for them to return to

school. still, marcello loffredo, a parent, says he now has one more thing to worry about. >> my mom, she's a 90. she's going to be 90 years old and she has dementia. she's bedridden. so you know, it's very touchy for them to go to school, come back with signs of you know, being sick. >> san francisco and other school districts in the state are concerned that this surge will add to the number of chronic absences. california is already experiencing following the pandemic. we know attendance rates won't return to those pre-pandemic levels on their own. >> and so we are making it a priority. >> san francisco unified is reaching out to parents to build good attendance habits and stay healthy as part of their campaign called you belong here. this is the recorded phone message, the superintendent sent to every parent right before the beginning of the school year. >> and when students are in school every day, academic

success goes up. >> san francisco is one of many districts facing this problem of chronic absences. in 20 2122, the state average was 33. san francisco did slightly better, 29. now the goal for san francisco this year is 24. still while that's nearly a quarter of the total number of students at sfusd who are expected to miss 18 days of school or more. so yeah, it's going to take a lot of work in the newsroom. leanne melendez, abc seven news. >> that's a lot of class time, miss. thank you, liane. plans are moving forward on a new bond measure to improve san francisco school campuses this coming tuesday. san francisco unified school district staff will present an outline of a proposed billion dollar measure. the bond could be used to pay for new student dining areas, new outdoor learning spaces as well as technology upgrades. this is happening while the city supervisors consider adopting more oversight of school

district spending. last week, the san francisco teachers union accused the district of mismanaging its finances. if approved, that bond could appear in the ballot. on the ballot next march. >> congresswoman nancy pelosi confirmed today that she will be seeking another term in congress. her 20th. yeah she chose to announce her plans during a speech before the plumbers hall in san francisco. >> unions have been among her strongest supporters during her career in congress. pelosi talked about the need to bring to the entire country the san francisco values she's carried to washington from the bay area. >> our values of our city are great. they're deep and they respect the dignity and worth of every person. so when we say love, we mean let other let other versions exist. we love everybody. and we really, really want our country to learn that from us. >> and following the announcement, the 83 year old speaker emerita spoke one on one

to abc7 news insider phil matier and phil joins us now to talk more about this announcement. >> well, i can't say that jaws dropped at the word that she was going to seek another term, although it is a bit unprecedented. >> you know, speakers usually retire after they end their terms, but but nancy pelosi decided to run for another term. but there were some questions going into the race. you know, the whole you remember that just 11 months ago, an intruder who wanted to hold nancy pelosi hostage broke into the family's san francisco home and assaulted her husband, paul pelosi. nancy pelosi was in washington at the time, but after that, we heard quite a few people say that she might not run if indeed there was others lining up to possibly run in her place, including state senator scott wiener and pelosi's own daughter, christine pelosi. but in the end, the speaker emeritus said that she just felt that it was her responsibility to continue representing the city and the bay area in congress. >> i think it's important for me to use my knowledge of the congress, my knowledge of the

city, my concern about the country for the benefit of my constituents. so it was really more a response about responsibility. >> did you ever think about not running? >> well, you always do. i mean, for 36 years i've thought about running. you always have to measure for what the value is of your contribution in something like this. and i never thought i'd stay as long as i did. and now we're hearing from those who would have run if pelosi didn't. >> as phil mentioned, scott wiener releasing a statement saying speaker emeritus pelosi is one of the most talented and transformational leaders in our lifetime. it's a good thing for san francisco and the nation that she will continue to serve. >> all right. so, phil, does this mean nobody will challenge her or at least nobody who can get more than 10? >> well, you can't get much blue city than san francisco. i mean, this is a democratic stronghold. so republicans, they've been targeting her for years for removal. but that's not going to happen. other democrats know they're probably going to step back as well. >> right. all right. so the good

meetings? >> you know, it'd be like, you know, when does frank sinatra decide not to sing? when he stopped being able to. they like that stuff, larry. larry, they like it. larry it's hard. joe montana would still be throwing the football if his legs would let him, right? that's fun. that's fun. well, some people have a different definition of fun. >> okay. don't want a jet ski to costco, larry, which might explain why other countries in the state it's in. >> okay. yeah. >> thank you, phil, thanks. >> san jose. congressman jimmy panetta says he's pushing congress to adopt stricter background checks on gun purchases or purchasers, that is. panetta spoke at a roundtable this morning with local leaders in santa clara county. he talked about the recently passed safer communities act. it allows a court to take a firearm away from a dangerous individual. panetta says congress needs to push for an assault weapons ban and extend the time period the fbi gets to do background checks. >> it got a little bit exhausting having to stand on the well of the floor of the

house of representatives and give our thoughts and prayers and stand for a moment of silence. >> panetta actually represents the santa cruz area. last year, there were 3200 gun related deaths in california. half of those were deaths by suicide. and panetta says he will work to get cities more money to fight gun deaths. now in the east bay, a driver killed a pedestrian in oakland this morning. police say the collision happened around 1030 this morning on international boulevard near 92nd avenue. it's not clear if the pedestrian was in a crosswalk or if alcohol or drugs were involved. the driver remained at the scene. a fremont elementary school was locked down this afternoon because of a police search. mattos elementary students had to stay inside while police searched near maori and farewell or farwell avenues. fremont police have not given us details. all they have said is that they took two suspects into custody. it's not clear what those suspects are accused of doing right now. police say the

situation is resolved and a woman accused of illegally smuggling tropical fruit into santa clara is being barred from selling any kind of fruit at this point. >> that was one of the conditions that the judge set forth and haven she and her other women that are involved in this were accused of importing from vietnam in violation of federal law. some of the fruit was infested with fruit flies. prosecutors say the shipment was mislabeled to avoid inspection. so she can now not possess fruit and vegetables for sale in california while awaiting trial. we have some new developments. the oakland a's have reportedly turned down an offer from a local development group to sell its 50% share of the oakland coliseum. our media partner, the east bay times, reports the president of the a's sent a letter to the african american sports and entertainment group saying they're, quote, not interested in selling or otherwise disposing of our interest in the coliseum. the entertainment group is currently in negotiations to buy the city of oakland's share of the coliseum, a 5.0 earthquake shook parts of

northern california this morning . >> the quake struck aroun 1030 this morning. it was centered 7.5 from fall river. mills 70 miles northeast of redding. ake tivated the state's shake o alert, which sentnoticee haven't hf any damage. the usgs says people reported feeling quake as far wes redding up interstate five north to mount shasta and as far south as chico. >> who's ready for the weekend? warmer temperatures are coming our way. here's abc seven news meteorologist sandy patel with a look at the numbers. >> yeah and larry it is going to be warmer than it is today. today the warming already got underway. take a look at a live picture here from our pier 39 camera. you can see plenty of sun out there. and here's a look at the temperatures 90s, inland 60s, coast side, everyone seeing an uptick in those numbers, anywhere from 2 to 7 degrees. and this trend is going to continue as we hit the weekend. so let's go hour by hour this evening at 5:00. still some 80s

show. >> tompkins is a member of save our city, a group of activists trying to stop the five story apartment project from being built. they say it's not appropriate for this lot. this week, the group was granted a temporary injunction in marin superior court halt construction at the site. we may be a david, but we have a slingshot. >> and we're going to bring down this giant because this is not something that is healthy for the community. >> it's a disaster. why because we don't need any more affordable housing in marin city . >> critics say the complex is slated to have 75 apartment units, but only 23 parking spots . it's located across the street from popular rocky graham park. >> parking is going to be difficult if you look at the street right now, it's filled. >> one of the biggest concerns is congestion here in marin city . there is just one way in and one way out here on drake avenue . >> it actually will create a dangerous situation, quite

frankly. i mean, especially if there's an emergency. >> the project was approved by marin county supervisors in 2020 under state senate bill 35, which removes discretionary authority from cities and counties for land use decisions involving housing projects. county officials tell abc7 news it's reviewing the proposal based on an agreement with the county. the developer will return to the county with updated plans addressing community coerns suchs parking, size, scope and esthetics for review. prior to starting construction. >> we will keep on working until this stops, period. >> save our city is planning a rally on saturday, activists say. make no mistake, the community is not against affordable housing. >> so this is not not in my backyard. it's just not in not this because we weren't consulted. this is a bad idea in marin city, cornell bernard, abc seven news. >> pride festivities are far from over in the bay area. >> in fact, on sunday, oakland wi host its pride parade. the festivities will kick off sunday along broadway from 14th to 21st

street. the festival gets going at noon. that's at 20th and broadway. one of the founders of oakland, pride, says parades it's more than just about having fun. they're a way of honoring the fight for lgbtq+ rights and the work that still needs to get done. >> why are we celebrating? you know, since the stonewall uprising in 1969, we there have been many hard won fights. but the fight is far from over. you know, extreme lawmakers continue to advance a record breaking number of anti lgbtq legislation . it's a global fight. the human rights violations against lgbtq is a global problem. just so much of oakland's diverse communities. she is a re-enactor of our fight for freedom. it's a reenactment of that time when the police would arrest us for

and then by the time the sun sets, the temperature will fall . but still in the comfort zone at 67 degrees today. it's warmer. it is nice, sunny view from sutro tower camera as we look at san francisco right now , 84 degrees in santa rosa. it's in the upper 80s for novato. look at that. 92 in fairfield and 89 degrees in livermore as we show you a view from our san rafael camera. notice really not much of a breeze out there. and here's a look at the temperatures. 67 in the city, 74. oakland, you're in the low to mid 80s from palo alto to san jose right now. live doppler seven showing you the fog has pulled away from the coast and so allowing all of us to enjoy some sunshine. all right. hurricane hover in the pacific southwest out of baja. it's going to continue to weaken. it's not going to make its way up into california, but it is going to send some big swells along with the potential for some dry thunderstorms around san benito and monterey counties

tomorrow. so a fire weather watch has been issued for tomorrow morning through late tomorrow night. if any thunderstorms develop with dry lightning, there's potential for new fires. so that's just something to keep in mind if you're traveling down there. also, there is a beach hazard statement for tomorrow through sunday southerly swell coming our way, i should say, towards the monterey bay, increasing the risk of dangerous rip currents. so use caution if you're going to be at the beaches from our east bay hills camera, we are looking at blue skies as we look towards a vollmer peak there. fog limited, mount diablo excuse me, fog limited to the coast in parts of the bay overnight. sunny and warmer for the weekend . and we are looking at a cooler pattern starting on tuesday. hour by hour, we go. notice the moisture from jova heading up the sierra. could see some showers for the bay area. it's fog giving way to sunshine and as we head towards tomorrow night, few extra high clouds in the southern part of our viewing area. morning temperatures in the 50s and the 60s. really limited fog to start the day tomorrow afternoon. it's going

it ever since. what's the latest? >> larry and kristen, the property owner at this new location, says he had no idea this type of activity might be happening on his property until we showed him an invitation for the party. video posted publicly to social media on what appears to be fresh's account. sometime between friday night and the early morning hours of saturday appears to show exotic dancers inside a club. it's not clear where this video was taken, but the abc7 news i-team obtained a text sent by fresh's phone number that same night announcing a private party from 130 to 4:30 a.m. at a location on alum rock avenue in san jose . the invitation says find parking anywhere, then call and list fresh's number. it boasts ten plus fresh, exotic dancers, $10 lap dances, 20 to party before 2 a.m, 150 plus bottles, 300 for 1942. don julio before 2 a.m. and 40 to dance. in addition to food for sale and the promise of good vibes and thick thighs, i got in touch with the property owner of the

address listed in the invitation who told me he had no knowledge whether this activity was taking place on his property. after talking with his tenant, he told the i-team his tenant rented the space to someone named fresh for $500 for a private party that he was planning for his aunt's birthday. by phone, fresh told the i-team he didn't know anything about that. the party came the day after a sheriff's deputy put an eviction notice at a townhome on camille circle, where residents had complained for months their neighbor was operating an all night strip club from inside the townhome every weekend, the i-team spoke with fresh, who says the parties are private for friends and family only. he denies charging anyone for entry. alcohol food or to dance fresh also told the i-team he's still staying in another unit at camille circle and that the private parties will continue. but with the music turned down so that neighbors aren't bothered, san jose's deputy of code enforcement tells abc7 news. potential criminal activity and code violations. associate with this case are currently being investigated and that san jose police department is the lead
