the congresswoman made her announcement and you talked to her about it too. >> phil yeah, you know, historically former house speakers like nancy pelosi, they sort of retire, step aside after they've done their time at the top. >> but once again, pelosi, who was the first female speaker, is plowing new ground just as she did when she was elected speaker this time by running for yet another two year term. we have a responsibility to honor the vision of our founders, the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, and the aspirations of our children. >> for the children, we must succeed. and this is going to be tough. we have to be strong. we have to be we have make a decision to win. and therefore we will win. and when we do so, we will do so in a way that promotes jobs, fairness, respect and dignity. >> well, pelosi said that the path ahead would be difficult

and challenging for both the country and for the democratic party. just look at the polls. they're facing a tough battle for election from the presidency on down. but at 83, she appeared to be up for the fight, even after the vicious attack on her husband by an intruder earlier this year who went into their home and wanted to take pelosi hostage. so it's been a real roller coaster for you personally. >> what were you weighing as you decided whether or not to seek yet another term? >> well, it was a question of the aperture community that this district has given me for all these years, especially over the last 20, where i was given the latitude to be speaker and leader in all that that implied in terms of every single day for 20 years, i was responsible for what was going on the floor of the house. even the majority and minority from the standpoint of the democrats, as usual, the former speaker was rather

guarded in our conversation, but she said she is ready for more. >> and there's right now there's no serious opponents there on the horizon. >> what kind of a race do you think we're looking at? i mean, republicans have always made her a target. >> they have. but there's not a lot of them in san francisco. so while nationally they've gone after her, the fact is this is the bluest of blue cities, you know, so i would say that there's, you know, maybe two potential candidates on the horizon, slim and none. >> all right. >> yeah. how's their campaigns going? but we talked about clout earlier. when you talk about somebody like nancy pelosi, who's been at the top of the political spectrum for a long time, what does she bring to the bay area in terms of representation, given that clout, money? >> okay. you look at our transit , you know, the central subway, that's nancy pelosi, the transbay terminal. that's nancy pelosi. the t line, the bay area tech, the bay area aids funding

, the bay area, you name it. chances are nancy pelosi has helped put together the package and push it through. she knows what buttons to push and how to get it done. now, there's a lot of people that say, you know, at 83, it's time to step aside, let new blood in. but at the same time, you know, we're going to have dianne feinstein, who's from san francisco, exiting. we had jackie speier, who retired as well. so washington's a seniority game. so you want to try to balance that out a bit. if you have a whole bunch of new people in there, a rookie team, and they wind up at the back, back of the bench not getting the money. thank you. okay, we're baking as it's referred to in politics. yes >> yeah. yeah. all right. thank you, phil. >> well, imagine if you're a nonprofit group. got a $20 million donation from philanthropist mackenzie scott, the ex-wife of amazon ceo jeff bezos, the san francisco community land trust just got word that it received that generous gift. abc seven news reporter suzanne fan takes a closer look at what that will do . >> literally cried for ten minutes straight after that

phone call. >> saki bailey, executive director of the san francisco community land trust, was overwhelmed with emotion after a life changing phone call. >> it was just simply, hi, it's us, the team from mackenzie scott. and you are the recipient of $20 million, according to recent reports, philanthropists , mackenzie scott has donated more than $146 million this year to 24 different nonprofits, including the san francisco community land trust. >> san francisco community land trust works to acquire property and turn it into permanently affordable homes by placing it under community ownership. we are a very small organization, a small nonprofit. >> we've been around for 20 years, but we have, just to give you a sense, five employees and our budget is basically. $1 million a year. >> over the past two decades, the nonprofit has acquired 14 buildings and 145 units for affordable housing for bipoc communities. next friday, the san francisco community land

trust will celebrate the opening of this four unit affordable housing complex. it's the first of its kind in russian hill at a house, seniors and families. the trust first acquired the apartments through the city's small sites program, which provides loans to nonprofit sponsors for us, it really means the future of creating bipoc homeownership in the bay area. >> as you know, this is an area that's in dire need of affordable housing. >> gaby malnati lives in russian hill. she's moving soon because rent is so expensive, it is not affordable whatsoever. she loves what mackenzie scott's done. >> i think it's really great and personally i think there should be more, more, more donations like that coming to san francisco. as for the sf community land trust, they say they're going to triple the size of their staff and scale up their acquisitions, taking properties off the speculative market and turning them into permanent housing. >> the bottom line, bailey says the nonprofit's vision is simple. >> this is an opportunity to

give so many families in the bay area a chance at finally owning a home in san francisco. >> suzanne fong, abc seven news. >> a group of investors is lining up a bid for the 152 year old landmark, the san francisco art institute. according to the san francisco business times, a group of nine arts and business leaders, including the widow of apple ceo or co-founder steve jobs, is interested in the chest art street campus on russian hill. they want to preserve the site as a location for arts, learning and development. the san francisco art institute closed in the summer of 2022. a possible deal could be discussed tuesday during the board of supervisors meeting. >> a new state law could allow uc berkeley to proceed with its plan to build at people's park in berkeley. ab 1307, which was signed into law thursday, amends part of the california environmental quality act. now residential noise is no longer considered a significant environmental impact. the university wants to build a 148 unit student housing complex at

the park. opponents sued, citing potential loud noise from student parties. a state appeals court ruling in february then halted construction. the case is now pending at the state supreme court. >> south bay congressman is pushing for a ban on assault weapons as jimmy panetta spoke at a roundtable this morning with local leaders in santa clara county said congress is able to pass gun control laws like the safer communities act that allows a court to take a firearm away from a dangerous individual. al panetta says congress now needs to ban assault weapons and extend the time period the fbi gets to do background checks. >> it got a little bit exhaust testing, having to stand on the well of the floor of the house of representatives and give our thoughts and prayers and stand for a moment of silence. >> last year, there were 3200 gun related deaths in california . half of those were deaths by suicide. panetta says he'll work to get cities more money to fight those gun deaths. >> health care provider kaiser permanente is settling a $49

million lawsuit with the state and multiple counties throughout california. state attorney general rob bonta says they took action after allegations kaiser improperly disposed of hazardous waste and failed to protect sensitive patient information. >> kaiser is our state's largest health care provider. it operates more than 700 health care facilities that treat 8.8 million. california if they don't follow the law, if they're careless with dangerous waste or sensitive information, the potential for harm is enormous and it's widespread, said investigators with several district attorneys offices conducted a series of undercover inspections and came across dumpsters containing thousands of paper medical records and hazardous waste, including blood filled syringes and human body parts. >> kaiser released a statement saying it takes this matter extremely seriously, takes full responsibility, and is taking steps to address the findings. is coming up on abc seven news at five. >> we're getting ready for oakland pride. we'll tell you about the preparations underway

has details on the celebrations in store. >> nina joyner, who owns fillmore social in downtown oakland, is hyped about this weekend. >> i'm so excited about this weekend. normally i'm always marching in the parade. we have a retail store not too far, but you know, now it's just it's a different vibe for us, a different feel. that's because her bar, which just opened in april, is along the parade route and one of the featured spots in this weekend's oakland pride. fillmore is involved in the bar crawl that's going to all of the lgbt centered and or owned bars in the area. >> she has 30 volunteers who will be helping out. she even has a special drink menu for pride weekend. this the naked bird is non alcoholic, symbolic , she says, of being inclusive. >> our parade route in oakland is very short, but the work that we do is a long game. the long game is to create a city that really embodies safety for people to be who they are. >> organizers say oakland pride is a celebration of the diversity of the lgbtq. plus

communities of oakland and the east bay. the parade, which runs through downtown oakland on sunday, is the second largest of its kind in northern california . oakland pride is also about family, fairyland, amusement park near lake merritt will hold special family friendly events on saturday. >> i am most excited about kids and families walking through our door and feeling welcomed here. no matter what their gender identity. sexual identity. oakland city council member rebecca kaplan helped launch oakland pride in 2008. >> in a statement to abc seven news, she says we need to unite in this time of unprecedented attacks against our lgbtq plus community. this event is a chance to show our pride, celebrate our progress and come together to create a more inclusive and equitable future for all. >> the politics are really important to the people here in oakland, and we are an open community and we want to make everyone feel safe. like i said earlier, no matter what the gender, no matter what your sexuality is, i think it's really important that we stay true to that.

just walk out in the city in decades. abc7 news south bay reporter zach fuentes has been following the story and has more. >> viva sj is a popular event that closes down miles of city streets for cycling and vendors. the next one sunday is set to go as planned, but how often it comes back may now be in question, all because of an agreement that was reached to stop a strike. more than 4500 city workers were threatening to walk off the job mid-august after tense negotiations. a deal was reached between the city and a coalition of two unions, workers with ifp local 21 and afscme 101 got a 14.5 to 15% wage increase over three years, with a 6% hike in the first year. now the city says to meet the first year increase, it may have to cut some funding to viva sj and other critical city services. the cuts in year one of this contract might amount to about $4 million and include things like viva parks, viva

kelly crossing guards in front of schools, traffic lights, synchrony. asian union representatives were unavailable to speak on camera friday, but a spokesperson says they don't believe the cuts are necessary. they pointed us to research done by nonprofit working partnerships usa research. they cited while negotiating a working partnerships doesn't necessarily have the expertise or access to all the information that the city managers budget director does. >> i'm going to go with the budget director's recommendation . >> even though he disagreed with the amount the workers will get, mehan says he's supportive of the city workers getting raises and says the unions did their jobs. the city council, he says, is ultimately responsible for the cuts, though mehan says cuts can't be avoided this year. there may be slim hope. for years, two and three of the new contract acts. >> it is certainly possible that the economy will do better than expected and we'll dodge a bullet. it's equally possible that the projections will be too positive and actual revenue will come in under the projection, in which case we will see a very significant shortfall and be

making extreme painful cuts and potentially layoffs. >> if the city council is set to vote on the wage contracts and proposed cuts tuesday in san jose. zach fuentes, abc7 news. >> major san jose trail that would link to a future bart station is one step closer to approval. the new trail would allow residents to easily acc the coming bart extension in the little ptugal neighborhood. on tuesday, councilrs will decidethero acquire the northern portion of that proposed trail from the santa clara vansrtation authoritywhich is now giving up the land fre after an initial asking price was knocked down from $1.5 million. all right. >> it is time to check on the weekend weather. >> yes, the most friday, i'm clear, on that weekend, we should emphasize that more sandy patel. >> yeah. and it is going to be a fabulous weekend. here's a sign of what's to come, larry. and alma, as you take a look here, temperatures are running higher than where they were yesterday by eight degrees in santa rosa, up five in san jose, oakland,

two degrees warmer in san francisco, though. so we have 90s inland 60s coast, a nice wide variety of summertime warm weather here. as we take a look at a live picture from our santa cruz camera, the waves kind of really not too large right now, but that's going to be changing. we have hurricane jova that is weakening, pulling away from the baja california coastline. but as it does, it is going to send big waves, high surf advisories are up for southern california coastline and for parts of the monterey and san benito county areas. a fire weather watch because moisture from there is expected to head in this direction and could bring some dry lightning. so this is going to start at 5 a.m. tomorrow, runs until 11 p.m. tomorrow night. also, that beach hazard statement is covering the monterey bay, and that is for that south swell that is heading in that direction because of the big breakers increased risk of dangerous rip currents for south

facing beaches. so in case you want to escape the warmth and head to the coast, watch out. this is in effect from tomorrow morning until sunday night. as we take a look at the forecast for the oakland pride parade on sunday, it is really going to be nice. mild start. 11 a.m, 65 degrees. temps will be in the comfort zone, low to upper 70s for the afternoon hours and then coming down into the upper 60s as we get closer to sunset. very shallow marine layer from our mount tam cam right now and it is not going to be really spreading very far. so limited to the coast and parts of the bay. overnight summer warmth for the weekend. and we are looking at a cooler pattern for tuesday as we go hour by hour. some of the cloudiness from hover, the hurricane jova will be moving into our southern part of our viewing area. we'll have the fog around tomorrow morning. some showers are possible in the sierra nevada with this one. but the greatest threat is going to be a slight risk of dry thunderstorms down south of us. monterey bay and san benito counties. morning temperatures in the 50s, 6060s. once again,

6.8 magnitude earthquake struck morocco tonight. the shaking was felt from rabat to marrakesh, about two 204 mile distance. there was no immediate word on any casualties or damage. the us geological survey says the quake occurred about 11 miles below the surface. officials confirmed the quake hit just after 11 p.m. and was centered around a popular ski resort in the atlas mountains we handcraft every batch of our delicious popcorn. like our cretors cheese and caramel mix. great on their own, even better together. try cretors, handcrafted small-batch popcorn.

tonight, hurricane lee now a category 4 storm marching across the atlantic. hurricane hunters flying into the storm, now with winds up to 150 miles per hour. the new models showing the storm's possible path. the hurricane expected to create huge waves and dangerous rip currents along the east coast all next week. and the threat at this hour, severe storms from washington, d.c., to philadelphia to new york. rob marciano timing it all out.
