san jose townhouse into a strip club may have found a new location allegedly without the property owner's permission. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm larry beil. thanks for joining us. abc7 news i-team reporter melanie woodrow broke the story last week. has been following it ever since. what's the latest? >> larry and ahmed, the property owner of this new location, tells abc7 news he had no idea this type of activity might be happening on his property until we showed him an invitation to the party video posted publicly to social media on what appears to be fresh's account. sometime between friday night and the early morning hours of saturday appears to show exotic dancers inside a club. it's not clear where this video was taken, but the abc7 news i-team obtained a text sent by fresh's phone number that same night announcing a private party from 130 to 4:30 a.m. at a location on alum rock avenue in san jose. the invitation says find parking anywhere, then call and list fresh's number. it boasts ten plus fresh, exotic dancers, $10

lap dances, 20 to party before 2 a.m, 150 plus bottles, 300 for 1942. don julio before 2 a.m. and 40 to dance. in addition to food for sale and the promise of good vibes and thick thighs, i got in touch with the property owner of the address listed in the invitation who told me he had no knowledge whether this activity was taking place on his property. after talking with his tenant, he told the i-team his tenant rented the space to someone named fresh for $500 for a private party that he was planning for his aunt's birthday . by phone, fresh told the i-team he didn't know anything about that. the party came the day after a sheriff's deputy put an eviction notice at a townhome on camille circle, where residents had complained for months their neighbor was operating an all night strip club from inside the townhome every weekend. the i-team spoke with fresh, who says the parties are private for friends and family only. he denies charging anyone for entry. alcohol, food or to dance. fresh also told the i-team he's still staying in another unit at camille circle

and that the private parties will continue. but with the music turned down so that neighbors aren't bothered. san jose's deputy of code enforcement tells abc7 news. potential criminal activity and code violation is associated with this case are currently being investigated and that san jose police department is the lead department in the investigation. san jose pd tells the i-team the investigation is ongoing. the parties host again emphasizes these are private parties for friends and family. but about this new location he told me he knew nothing about it. >> so what's next for fresh then? who knows? >> i don't know, larry. >> every week brings a new story, doesn't it? i'm not sure. >> but i will say this. sfpd says they're investigating and so does code enforcement. so we'll see. all right. >> thank you, melanie. to get in touch with the i-team, you can call this number on your screen or go to abc7 news.com slash i-team crews have cleared a landslide in san mateo county that was blocking part of highway 84 west of woodside. >> sky seven was overhead as crews worked to clear the debris near the highway 35 junction.

all lanes of highway 84 were closed during the cleanup. the road is now open. >> a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck morocco just hours ago. and just for comparison, the 1989 loma prieta earthquake here , that was magnitude 6.9 in morocco. the epicenter was less than 50 miles from marrakech. the earthquake struck just after 11 p.m. local time. it's around 3:00 our time. there are reports of some damaged buildings and we're still working to confirm reports of anybody injured. 5.0 quake shook a part of norer california this morning. that was near fall river. malls fall . fall river mills. yeah. which is about 70 miles northeast of redding. that quake struck atart activated state's shake alert, which sent notices to cell p peoe as far awa as chico and oregon told the usgs that they did feel the shaking. we have not heard any reports of damage yet. >> now to building a better bay area in the north bay marin city residents are taking their fight

against a new affordable housing development to court. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard found opponents who say more housing isn't what the community needs. >> people in marin city are not going to benefit from this. >> pastor floyd tompkins says the proposed affordable housing project at 825 drake avenue is something his community doesn't want or need. for starters, it would block the view of seniors living right behind it. >> for the people who live in those houses. this is a horror show. >> tompkins is a member of save our city, a group of activists trying to stop the five story apartment project from being built. they say it's not appropriate for this lot. this week, the group was granted a temporary injunction in marin superior court, halting construction at the site. we may be a david, but we have a slingshot and we're going to bring down this giant because this is not something that is healthy for the community. >> it's a disaster. >> why? because we don't need any more affordable housing in

marin city. >> critics say the complex is slated to have 75 apartment units, but only 23 parking spots. it's located across the street from popular rocky graham park parking is going to be difficult. >> if you look at the street right now, it's filled. >> one of the biggest concerns is congestion here in marin city . there is just one way in and one way out here on drake avenue . >> it actually will create a dangerous situation, quite frankly. i mean, especially if there's an emergency. >> the project was approved by marin county supervisors in 2020 under state senate bill 35, which removes discretion authority from cities and counties for land use decisions involving housing projects. county officials tell abc7 news it's reviewing the proposal based on aagreement with the county. the developer will return to the county with updated plans addressing community concerns such as parking, size, scope and esthetics for review. prior to starting construction. >> we will keep on working until it stops, period. >> save our city is planning a rally on saturday. activists

say. make no mistake, the community is not against affordable housing. >> so this is not not in my backyard. it's just not in not this because we weren't consulted. this is a bad idea in marin city, cornell bernard, abc seven news congresswoman nancy pelosi ended speculation about her political future. >> today she announced she would be seeking reelection. pelosi's announcement drew cheers from a pro-union crowd in san francisco . and even though she's been in congress for 36 years, pelosi says her job is not done. she wants to return to washington and keep fighting for equal rights for everybody. pelosi calls that san francisco values our values of our city are great . >> they're deep, and they respect the dignity and worth of every person. >> right after the announcement, pelosi spoke exclusively with abc seven news insider phil matier. now is house speaker pelosi focused more on the national stage. phil expects

pelosi will be more focused on the bay area. >> we didn't see a lot of nancy pelosi in san francisco or the bay area because she was busy out there getting people elected in illinois and colorado in order to change the balance of power. all of our attention has been on the national. she's turning now to okay homelessness , fentanyl, the crises that we are facing here. >> pelosi will be 84 years old during next year's election. >> covid cases are in. covid cases are up in the bay area, including at school. san francisco unified is sending weekly reminders to parents to make sure they know what to do in case their child tests positive. abc7 news senior education reporter leah melendez is in the newsroom with more on those recommendations which liane some have frankly forgotten. >> yeah, because it hasn't been a problem until now. sort of now. one thing that parents have to realize is that this is no longer a pandemic. covid is endemic, which means like the

flu, it won't be eradicated, but it really won't disrupt our lives. or in this case, for schools to close. >> and i can't believe we got to go through all this again. >> while the covid surge is being watched by health officials, san francisco unified says no changes will be made to their safety guidelines in place since last march. >> we are continuing to follow the state and local guidance so masking is encouraged in schools, but not required. we can provide masking to schools as they need to hand out to students and to staff. we also continue to share resources with families such as where they can get vaccinated options and access other resources to support them. to help parents remember those guidelines, the school district is sending weekly tips to follow what are the appropriate action steps to take when your students have some sort of illness? >> and when can you send them to school? >> to be clear, even if the student was exposed to covid, unless symptoms develop, that student may continue to stay at school. students who test positive should stay home. no

test is required for them to return to school. still, marcello loffredo, a parent, says he now has one more thing to worry about. >> my mom, she's a 90. she's going to be 90 years old and she has dementia. she's bedridden. and so, you know, it's very touchy for them to go to school, come back with a signs of, you know, being sick. >> san francisco and other school districts in the state are concerned that this surge will add to the number of chronic absence. his california is already experiencing following the pandemic. >> look, we know attendance rates won't return to those pre-pandemic levels on their own. and so we are making it a priority. >> san francisco unified is reaching out to parents to build good attendance habits and stay healthy as part of their campaign. called you belong here. this is the recorded phone message, the superinten student sent to every parent right

the parade starts at 11 a.m. at 14th and broadway. abc7 news reporter ansar hassan has details on the celebrations in store. >> nina joyner, who owns feelmore social in downtown oakland is hyped about this weekend. >> i'm so excited about this weekend. normally i'm always marching in the parade. we have a retail store not too far, but you know, now it's just it's a different vibe for us, a different feel. >> that's because her bar, which just opened in april, is along the parade route. and one of the featured spots in this weekend's oakland pride fillmore is involved in the bar crawl that's going to all of the lgbt centered and or owned bars in the area. she has 30 volunteers who will be helping out. she even has a special drink menu for pride weekend. this the naked bird is alcoholic, symbolic, she says, of being inclusive. our parade route in oakland is very short, but the work that we do is a long game. >> the long game is to create a

rosa compared to 24 hours ago. good day to be out on the beach in santa cruz right now. the waves are not really that bad, but things are going to be changing. hurricane jova, just southwest of baja, is moving away. it continues to weaken, but it is going to send some large swells in the direction of california. so first, before we talk about that leftover moisture from this is expected to bring the potential for some dry lightning around monterey and san benito counties. that's why a fire weather watch begins tomorrow at 5 a.m, runs until 11 p.m. if there is any lightning associated with it, could see some new fire starts. so if you're traveling down there, keep that in mind. and if you're heading to southern california to they have high surf advisories because of hova until monday evening as they are expecting rough surf beach hazards statement for the monterey bay for that southerly swell that is coming in with hova and we are expecting that to run through sunday night in

inland where you're only in the mid 80s, larry. >> but that seems like perfection. >> an ideal weather. yeah. thank you, sandra in san jose. >> we may be seeing the impact of a workers strike that was averted just two weeks ago or just weeks ago. excuse me. san jose officials are proposing cuts to other services to fund the raises given to workers to prevent the largest walkout in the city in decades. abc7 news south bay reporter zach fuentes has been following the story and has more. >> viva sj is a popular event that closes down miles of city streets for cycling and vendors. the next one sunday is set to go as planned, but how often it comes back may now be in question. all because of an agreement that was reached to stop a strike. more than 4500 city workers were threatening to walk off the job mid-august after tense negotiations. a deal was reached between the city and a coalition of two unions, workers with local 21 and afscme 101 got a 14.5 to 15% wage increase over three years, with a 6% hike in the first year. now, the city says to meet the first year increase, it may have

to cut some funding to viva sj and other critical city services . >> the cuts in year one of this contract amount to about $4 million and include things like viva parks, viva cal crossing guards in front of schools, traffic light synchronization union representatives were unavailable to speak on camera friday, but a spokesperson says they don't believe the cuts are necessary. >> they pointed us to research done by nonprofit working partnerships. usa research that they cited while negotiating a working partnerships doesn't necessarily have the expertise or access to all the information that the city manager's budget director does. >> i'm going to go with the budget directors recommendation. >> though he disagreed with the amount the workers will get. mehan says he's supportive of the city workers getting raises and says the unions did their jobs. the city council, he says, is ultimately responsible for the cuts, though mehan says cuts can't be avoided this year, there may be slim hope for years, two and three of the new contracts, but it is certainly possible that the economy will do better than expected and

donation. that's what a local nonprofit group just received, a very generous gift for the san francisco community land trust. >> yes, it comes from philanthropist mackenzie scott, who was once married to amazon founder jeff bezos. abc7 news reporter suzannephan takes a closer look at what the money will do. literally cried for ten minutes straight after that phone call. >> zach bailey, executive director of the san francisco community land trust, was overwhelmed with emotion after a life changing phone call. it was just simply hi, it's us. the team from mackenzie scott and you are the recipient of $20 million. according to recent reports, philanthropists mackenzie scott has donated more than $146 million this year to 24 different nonprofits, including the san francisco community land trust at san francisco community land trust works to acquire property and turn it into permanently affordable homes by placing it

under community ownership ship. >> we are a very small organization, a small nonprofit. we've been around for 20 years, but we have just to give you a sense, five employees and our budget is basically $1 million a year over the past two decades, the nonprofit has acquired 14 buildings and 145 units for affordable housing for bipoc communities. >> next friday, the san francisco community land trust will celebrate the opening of this four unit affordable housing complex. it's the first of its kind in russian hill at a house, seniors and families. the trust first acquired the apartments through the city's small sites program, which provides loans to nonprofit sponsors. >> for us, it really means the future of creating bipoc homeownership in the bay area. as you know, this is an area that's in dire need of affordable housing. >> gaby malnati lives in russian hill. she's moving soon because rent is so expensive, it is not affordable whatsoever. she loves what mackenzie scott's done.

>> i think it's really great and personally i think there should be more, more, more like donations like that. coming to san francisco. >> so as for the sf community land trust, they say they're going to triple the size of their staff and scale up their acquisitions, taking properties off the speculative market and turning them into permanent housing. the bottom line, bailey says the non profits vision is simple. >> this is an opportunity to give so many families in the bay area a chance at finally owning a home in san francisco. >> suzannephan an abc seven news. happening tonight, the final bhangra and beats night market in san francisco. >> so this is the third of three events. the last two of each drawn about 10,000 people to downtown san francisco. the night market features north indian dance music, food and local artists. the event shuts down a part of battery street between washington and sacramento. the party started at 5:00 and goes until ten. bart promises more trains and shorter wait times when it puts an updated service schedule into

effect on monday. wait times will be no more than 20 minutes, even on nights and weekends on all lines, some daytime service is being scaled back in order to provide more evening service. as of monday, bart will only use its fleet of new cars. the last ride on the older legacy cars will take place on sunday. trains will also be shorter. >> we no longer have the big high tide in the morning where you see people traveling from the east bay into the city. it's more evened out throughout the day and throughout the week. so we matched the travel patterns to our schedule. >> all ridership is still well below what it was before the pandemic. the weekday ridership is up to 40. on weekends, it's nearly two thirds of pre-pandemic levels. >> we need to correct a news item reported yesterday here on abc7 as san francisco police released body camera video in the shooting of a man in the tenderloin. we reported that the man died following the shooting last month. actually he remains hospitalized and the police department says he's in stable condition. sorry, we do regret the error. the shooting happened

after officers spent about 20 minutes trying to get the man to drop a knife. two officers began shooting after they say he came toward them swinging that knife. well, it's been 12 years since giants fan bryan stow was beaten into a coma at dodger stadium. his recovery be a very slow process it to learn just how to walk again. our sister station in los angeles has put together a special piece about the attack and stow's recovery. here's mark brown. what did they take from you? >> my life. i was a healthy paramedic, loved my job, loved my family and boom changed like that. >> i met with bryan stow at a gym in scotts valley near santa cruz. his son, tyler, is now his trainer, helping his dad gain strength all the way down, get the elbow down all the way. >> yeah. nice shot. >> stow lives quietly. these days with his parents, dave and ann, giving him round the clock

care. some of you may not remember his name, but it was once a common refrain in the news. stow was the victim of one of the most well known acts of sports fan violence. it happened in 2011 after the opening day game at dodger stadium. bitter rivals the giants and dodgers squaring off. brian stow and his friends were there. big giants fans in their giants gear after the game. stow was blindsided in the parking lot by two men wearing dodger jerseys. >> it was a dodger fan and a dodger jersey. >> there was no way to identify him. >> if i saw him, i could recognize him. but he's gone. >> they picked us because we were all wearing giants shirts or jerseys and i turned around late and i caught the brunt of it, punched and kicked. >> his skull was fractured. he barely survived. corey the dove i me to protect me goes brian. >> i saw your brain, my skull was split open that much that he saw my brain. >> many patients with this

degree of bleeding and swelling in the brain, especially on both sides, with the skull fracture that brian had, would not survive this injury. he spent nine months in a coma. >> part of his skull had to be removed. he had to relearn how to walk, talk and right now, more than a dozen years later, it's been a remarkable recovery. but it's a process that may never end. >> i want to be able to walk without a device, crutches or a cane. i want to be healthy, be it's not that much to ask the two men who went to prison for the brutal beating. >> louis sanchez and marvin norwood are now free and not far from brian's mind. do you think about them? >> every single day, wondering what they're doing? yeah one of the guys got four years in prison. the other guy got eight years in prison. so there i had five cardiac arrests that night in the hospital. and that's all

they got. >> his family sued the dodgers, citing poor security in the parking lots. they were left with just over $5 million to take care of brian. his family has been there the whole way, caring for his every need. and surprisingly, even though he was nearly killed, brian says he would go back to dodger stadium for another dodgers giants game. >> i would wear the same jersey and still go to the game just be have a heads up as to what's going on. >> mark brown, abc seven news. incredible to hear that story again. >> we of course wish him the best recovery and it's nice to see that he continues to improve . well, it has been one year since the death of queen elizabeth. the second king charles released an audio message to mark the anniversary we recall with great affection in her long life devoted service and all she meant to so many of us. buckingham palace released this photo of the queen taken in

away from the island chain. the biggest threat with this is going to be life threatening rip currents, danger swells. and then this system is expected to make a turn paralleling the east coast. but rough surf could be impacting parts of the eastern seaboard as early as sunday going into monday. here's a look at live doppler seven here. locally, we do have a little bit of fog, not too much. it's not going to be really widespread. fog event tomorrow morning, limited to the coast and the bay tomorrow afternoon. it's a warm day inland in the 80s and 90s along the coast. it's mild in the 60s. now on sunday, temperatures are going up. we'll be in the mid 90s for the hot spots that holds for monday and then you'll notice that sharp drop off inland only in the mid 80s is a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. no extreme weather just summertime warmth for the weekend and then we'll cool it off. for those of you who don't like the warm weather, larry and alma, it's looking good really from a fire weather perspective as well. we don't want any extreme heat around
