are revealing details about an incident that started with a mental health check. and ended with officers opening fire on a man. good evening. i'm ahmad daetz. and i'm larry. >> that shooting happened after a confrontation in the area of dover avenue and pullman street in san pablo. abc7 news reporter tim johns with more on exactly what led to the shooting. luh- larry alma. >> the investigation still unfolding here on dover avenue in san pablo. as you can see, police were working and collecting evidence late into the night and the man who was shot now in the hospital. the san pablo police department says it all began this afternoon

around 130, after a woman called 911 asking for a mental health evaluation for her husband. she said she thought he was showing signs of schizophrenia. by the time police arrived, they say the man had locked himself inside of a room and refused any attempts at communication. the woman said her husband wasn't acting violent and that she'd call officers again if he exited and she needed help. about one hour later, the woman again called 911, saying that the man had come out of the room and was harassing her. police say the emergency dispatcher overheard the man in the background screaming that he would kill any police officers that came and make them kill him as well. after san pablo, officers arrived back on the scene. the second time, the man tried hiding and throwing brick pieces at them, according to police, after they tried non-lethal methods, the man charged and swung at officers with the metal pole while one officer ducked to avoid being hit. another fired a shot from his gun, striking the man in the leg. >> anytime we're we're dealing with individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis, a behavioral health crisis. it's a very serious issue. all of our officers are

mandatorily trained in critical incident crisis communication after the shot was fired, the man was detained and transported to a local hospital for treatment. >> that man is said to be in critical condition at this hour . police also saying that the officers involved in this incident have been placed on paid leave while they investigate, according to protocol in san pablo. tim johns, abc seven news. now if you or somebody you know is struggling with mental health issues, you can find a list of local resources on our website at abc7 news.com/take action. >> congresswoman nancy pelosi ended speculation about her political future today when she announced she would seek reelection. pelosi's announcement drew cheers from a pro-union crowd in san francisco. even though she has been in congress for 36 years. pelosi says her job isn't done. she says she's still the best woman for the job because of the experience she's had since she first arrived in dc in 1987. >> i know the congress very well. i know the country very

well. more importantly, i know this city very well. >> abc7 news insider phil matier says pelosi's reelection will hinge on meeting the needs of her voters. >> we didn't see a lot of nancy pelosi in san francisco or the bay area because she was busy out there getting people elected in illinois and colorado in order to change the balance of power. all of our attention has been on the national. she's turning now to okay homeless anas fentanyl. the crisises that we are facing here. >> pelosi will be 84 years old during next year's election in education. >> it's a key part of building a better bay area that includes early childhood education and after school programs. well, tonight, there's a tearful plea from some child care providers in the south bay in just a matter of weeks. they're facing an end to the support that was first issued by the federal government when the pandemic began more than three years ago. well, tonight, those providers and parents met with bay area lawmakers to discuss what some are calling a looming child care crisis. abc7 news reporter lauren martinez with more.

>> whether you are a parent or not, a situation being described as a child care crisis will impact everyone on friday, representative ro khanna held an affordable child care roundtable because at the end of this month , federal covid 19 relief funding for providers and already khanna says, 600 child care businesses closed down in santa clara county. >> children with state funded vouchers in santa clara county, nearly 2000 children are holding vouchers. they are able to pay for a slot, but there are no available slots. >> how are the small business people going to survive in this? >> during the discussion, daycare provider manmeet it was emotional because even though there are thousands of children on a state wait list, her home daycare and her daycare center are struggling to get more kids enrolled. i'm just surviving. >> i'm going to only have five kids and in five kids am i going, how am i going to pay the rent? how am i going to pay my

teachers? >> the average cost of child care in the us is $10,000 per year. in california. that number is $13,000. santa clara supervisor susan ellenberg said up that to $20,000 in the bay area. that's more than in-state tuition. >> as any parent, you do whatever it's needed for your child. >> andre oliveira has a six year old daughter in first grade. he works the graveyard shift as a janitor at a san jose hospital, all because there's no affordable after school care. he'll have to remain working on that shift. i will say it's one of the main reasons why we didn't maybe go for a second child. representative khanna is introducing a bipartisan bill to make child care $10 per day or less while guaranteeing good wages for child care workers. but he's not the only lawmaker introducing legislation for affordable child care. you can't be confident with congress these days on anything, but i'm hopeful. >> i'm hopeful that if people mobilize, if they members of congress hear about this from their constituent base, that

people will realize we can't forsake america's kids in san jose. >> lauren martinez, abc7 news. >> viva sj is a popular event that closes down san jose streets to cyclists and vendors, but a new union contract might make it a thing of the past. the next viva calls sj will be held on sunday, but now the city may have to drop future events in order to meet the financial demands of the new contract. the city made the agreement last month in an effort to prevent 4500 workers from striking the cuts in year one of this contract amount to about $4 million and include things like viva parks, viva kelly crossing guards in front of schools, traffic lights, synchronization . union representatives were unavailable to speak on camera today, but a spokesperson says they don't believe the cuts are necessary. the mayor adds there's a slim chance the city will be able to keep viva sj but that will all depend on how well the economy is doing. the city

e-commerce packages and they're co-mingled with thousands and thousands of other packages. it's like finding a needle in a stack of needles. seven days a week, 365 days a year. this is a secure inspection warehouse near lax in the war against fentanyl . >> it's the front lines. us customs agents have computerized systems that allow them to target items that are flagged as suspicious and warrant further inspections if it gets through lax, it gets out on the street. >> so if it gets through lax, it's going to get to its next destination and it's going to be turned into the final product. the numbers are staggering. >> 35,000 shipments a day come through this warehouse and there's constant movement. every item has to be inspected very quickly. there used to be 87 warehouses spread out over the area. now it's all in one place. today kristie canegallo, the deputy secretary of homeland security, visited the location to see the process firsthand. and this is all part of operation artemis. >> so operation artemis was launched in june of this year and we have already seized over

8,000 pounds of fentanyl precursor bags and over half of that. we've seized right here out of lax. >> officials say fentanyl is a significant challenge, killing more than 100,000 americans over the last two years. and it's easy to make, unlike meth, which is dangerous to produce a pill, press like this in someone's home could produce thousands of pills a day. >> americans are dying every single day. and at the department of homeland security, we are committed to doing our part to try to cut off fentanyl and fentanyl precursors. >> at lax, i'm carlos granda, abc seven news. >> bart promises more trains and shorter wait times when it puts an updated service schedule into effect on monday. wait times will be no more than 20 minutes. even on nights and weekends. and that's on all lines. some daytime service is being scaled back in order to provide more evening service, bart will only use its new fleet of cars. the last ride on the older legacy cars will take place on sunday. so if you're into the nostalgia, sunday is your day. trains will

picture. but until then, we're already seeing some moisture out ahead of it, and that is resulting, as you see on live doppler seven. some showers and thunderstorms beginning to move into southern california where they're going to see a lot of the impacts there. but there's potential for some of that dry lightning to make it up into the monterey, san benito county areas, which is why a fire weather watch goes up tomorrow morning. it runs until tomorrow night. it could trigger new fires. so just keep that in mind, especially if you have travel plans going down there down in southern california. hova's also kicking up the surf high surf advisory until monday night here. we're looking at the monterey bay under a beach hazard statement as southerly swells develop increased risk of dangerous rip currents, current wave heights around monterey, bay of four feet, your temperature at this hour are really in the comfort zone 50 to 70. as we check out what's ahead for oakland pride parade this sunday. it's really going to be beautiful weather. 11 a.m, a mild start, 65 degrees. the
