are revealing details about an incident that started with a mental health check. and ended with officers opening fire on a man. good evening. i'm ahmad daetz. and i'm larry. >> that shooting happened after a confrontation in the area of dover avenue and pullman street in san pablo. abc7 news reporter tim johns with more on exactly what led to the shooting. luh- larry alma. >> the investigation still unfolding here on dover avenue in san pablo. as you can see, police were working and collecting evidence late into the night and the man who was shot now in the hospital. the san pablo police department says it all began this afternoon around 130, after a woman called

911 asking for a mental health evaluation for her husband. she said she thought he was showing signs of schizophrenia. by the time police arrived, they say the man had locked himself inside of a room and refused any attempts at communication. the woman said her husband wasn't acting violent and that she'd call officers again if he exited and she needed help. about one hour later, the woman again called 911, saying that the man had come out of the room and was harassing her. police say the emergency dispatcher overheard the man in the background screaming that he would kill any police officers that came and make them kill him as well. after san pablo, officers arrived back on the scene. the second time, the man tried hiding and throwing brick pieces at them, according to police, after they tried non-lethal methods, the man charged and swung at officers with the metal pole while one officer ducked to avoid being hit. another fired a shot from his gun, striking the man in the leg. >> anytime we're we're dealing with individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis, a behavioral health crisis. it's a very serious issue. all of our officers are mandatorily trained in critical

incident crisis communication after the shot was fired, the man was detained and transported to a local hospital for treatment. >> that man is said to be in critical condition at this hour . police also saying that the officers involved in this incident have been placed on paid leave while they investigate, according to protocol in san pablo. tim johns, abc seven news. now if you or somebody you know is struggling with mental health issues, you can find a list of local resources on our website at abc7 news.com/take action. >> congresswoman nancy pelosi ended speculation about her political future today when she announced she would seek reelection. pelosi's announcement drew cheers from a pro-union crowd in san francisco. even though she has been in congress for 36 years. pelosi says her job isn't done. she says she's still the best woman for the job because of the experience she's had since she first arrived in dc in 1987. >> i know the congress very well. i know the country very well. more importantly, i know

this city very well. >> abc7 news insider phil matier says pelosi's reelection will hinge on meeting the needs of her voters. >> we didn't see a lot of nancy pelosi in san francisco or the bay area because she was busy out there getting people elected in illinois and colorado in order to change the balance of power. all of our attention has been on the national. she's turning now to okay homeless anas fentanyl. the crisises that we are facing here. >> pelosi will be 84 years old during next year's election in education. >> it's a key part of building a better bay area that includes early childhood education and after school programs. well, tonight, there's a tearful plea from some child care providers in the south bay in just a matter of weeks. they're facing an end to the support that was first issued by the federal government when the pandemic began more than three years ago. well, tonight, those providers and parents met with bay area lawmakers to discuss what some are calling a looming child care crisis. abc7 news reporter lauren martinez with more. >> whether you are a parent or

not, a situation being described as a child care crisis will impact everyone on friday, representative ro khanna held an affordable child care roundtable because at the end of this month , federal covid 19 relief funding for providers and already khanna says, 600 child care businesses closed down in santa clara county. >> children with state funded vouchers in santa clara county, nearly 2000 children are holding vouchers. they are able to pay for a slot, but there are no available slots. >> how are the small business people going to survive in this? >> during the discussion, daycare provider manmeet it was emotional because even though there are thousands of children on a state wait list, her home daycare and her daycare center are struggling to get more kids enrolled. i'm just surviving. >> i'm going to only have five kids and in five kids am i going, how am i going to pay the rent? how am i going to pay my teachers? >> the average cost of child care in the us is $10,000 per

year. in california. that number is $13,000. santa clara supervisor susan ellenberg said up that to $20,000 in the bay area. that's more than in-state tuition. >> as any parent, you do whatever it's needed for your child. >> andre oliveira has a six year old daughter in first grade. he works the graveyard shift as a janitor at a san jose hospital, all because there's no affordable after school care. he'll have to remain working on that shift. i will say it's one of the main reasons why we didn't maybe go for a second child. representative khanna is introducing a bipartisan bill to make child care $10 per day or less while guaranteeing good wages for child care workers. but he's not the only lawmaker introducing legislation for affordable child care. you can't be confident with congress these days on anything, but i'm hopeful. >> i'm hopeful that if people mobilize, if they members of congress hear about this from their constituent base, that people will realize we can't forsake america's kids in san

jose. >> lauren martinez, abc7 news. >> viva sj is a popular event that closes down san jose streets to cyclists and vendors, but a new union contract might make it a thing of the past. the next viva calls sj will be held on sunday, but now the city may have to drop future events in order to meet the financial demands of the new contract. the city made the agreement last month in an effort to prevent 4500 workers from striking the cuts in year one of this contract amount to about $4 million and include things like viva parks, viva kelly crossing guards in front of schools, traffic lights, synchronization . union representatives were unavailable to speak on camera today, but a spokesperson says they don't believe the cuts are necessary. the mayor adds there's a slim chance the city will be able to keep viva sj but that will all depend on how well the economy is doing. the city council is set to vote on the

they'll be family friendly events tomorrow, followed by a pub crawl, then special performances in the evening. then on sunday, the parade starts at 11 a.m. at 14th and broadway. abc7 news reporter answer hassan with details on the celebration is in store. >> nina joyner, who owns feelmore social in downtown oakland, is hyped about this weekend. >> i'm so excited about this weekend. normally i'm always marching in the parade. we have a retail store not too far but you know now it's just it's a different vibe for us, a different feel. >> that's because her bar, which just opened in april, is along the parade route. and one of the featured spots in this weekend's oakland pride fillmore is involved in the bar crawl that's going to all of the lgbt centered and or owned bars in the area. she has 30 volunteers who will be helping out. she even has a special drink menu for pride weekend. this the naked bird is non alcoholic, symbolic, she says of being inclusive. our parade route in oakland is very short, but the work that we do is a long game.

>> the long game is to create a city that really embodies safety for people to be who they are. >> organizers say oakland pride is a celebration of the diversity of the lgbtq plus communities of oakland and the east bay. the parade, which runs through downtown oakland on sunday, is the second largest of its kind in northern california . the oakland pride is also about family, fairyland, amusement park near lake merritt will hold special family friendly events on saturday. >> i am most excited about kids and families walking through our door and feeling welcomed here. no matter what their gender identity, sexual identity. >> oakland city council member rebecca kaplan helped launch oakland pride in 2008in his statement to abc7 news. she says we need to unite in this time of unprecedented attacks against our lgbtq plus community. this event is a chance to show our pride, celebrate our progress and come together to create a more inclusive and equitable future for all. >> the politics are really important to the people here in

last 3 to 4 days. crews will use a security belt to lift the man through the cave's narrow openings, as some specially trained airport inspectors are now on the front line in the war against fentanyl. >> they're in a battle with dealers using all sorts of tricks to disguise the chemicals used to make the drug. reporter carlos granda from our sister station in los angeles has a behind the scenes look at how those inspectors are outsmart ing smugglers. >> these are chemicals used to make fentanyl. they're known as precursors and smugglers try to get clever by hiding them in what appear to be regular shipments. that's where these inspectors come in. their job is to outsmart the creative criminals. >> and they're coming through disguised and innocent e-commerce packages and they're co-mingled with thousands and thousands of other packages. it's like finding a needle in a stack of needles. seven days a week, 365 days a year. this is a secure inspection warehouse near lax in the war against fentanyl . >> it's the front lines. us customs agents have computerized systems that allow them to

target items that are flagged as suspicious and warrant further inspections if it gets through lax, it gets out on the street. >> so if it gets through lax, it's going to get to its next destination and it's going to be turned into the final product. the numbers are staggering. >> 35,000 shipments a day come through this warehouse and there's constant movement. every item has to be inspected very quickly. there used to be 87 warehouses spread out over the area. now it's all in one place. today kristie canegallo, the deputy secretary of homeland security, visited the location to see the process firsthand. and this is all part of operation artemis. >> so operation artemis was launched in june of this year and we have already seized over 8,000 pounds of fentanyl precursor bags and over half of that. we've seized right here out of lax. >> officials say fentanyl is a significant challenge, killing more than 100,000 americans over the last two years. and it's easy to make, unlike meth, which is dangerous to produce a pill,

press like this in someone's home could produce thousands of pills a day. >> americans are dying every single day. and at the department of homeland security, we are committed to doing our part to try to cut off fentanyl and fentanyl precursors. >> at lax, i'm carlos granda, abc seven news. >> bart promises more trains and shorter wait times when it puts an updated service schedule into effect on monday. wait times will be no more than 20 minutes. even on nights and weekends. and that's on all lines. some daytime service is being scaled back in order to provide more evening service, bart will only use its new fleet of cars. the last ride on the older legacy cars will take place on sunday. so if you're into the nostalgia, sunday is your day. trains will also be shorter ridership is still well below what it was before the pandemic. weekday ridership is up to 40. on weekends, it's nearly two thirds of pre-pandemic levels. the bhangra and beats night market

graced downtown san francisco tonight with great music and cuisine. >> the event mixes south asian bhangra music along with other popular bay area music genres. visitors also got a chance to sip cocktails and shop products from local artisans. tonight's night market drew in over 12,000 people, while it wrapped up the third and final friday for the event this year. >> also tonight, long time abc7 news reporter david louie was honored at the san francisco chinese culture center's annual gala. david receiving the lifetime achievement in community building award. he was one of the first asian american reporters in the bay area. and then through the years, david reported on many of the bay area's biggest stories, including the kidnaping of patty hearst and the loma prieta earthquake. david retired last year after 50 years years with our company, most of them as a reporter here on abc7. i think with the three of us, we're right around 50 years. sandy maybe puts us over the top. >> oh yeah, i'm way up there and she said where the weather?

yeah. congratulations to david and larry and alma. let's take a look at time lapse from our mount tam cam. a real shallow fog layer tonight as we look over san francisco. that fog isn't going to go very far, giving us plenty of sun tomorrow. today's temperatures were in the 60s to 90s. we're going to do it all over again tomorrow and then bump up the numbers on sunday. you can see on live doppler seven very limited fog out there. do want to show you hurricane jova. it is a very large hurricane, still weakening, expected to continue to make its turn away from the baja, california coastline and eventually moving out of the picture. but until then, we're already seeing some moisture out ahead of it, and that is resulting, as you see on live doppler seven. some showers and thunderstorms beginning to move into southern california where they're going to see a lot of the impacts there. but there's potential for some of that dry lightning to make it up into the

monterey, san benito county areas, which is why a fire weather watch goes up tomorrow morning. it runs until tomorrow night. it could trigger new fires. so just keep that in mind, especially if you have travel plans going down there down in southern california. hova's also kicking up the surf high surf advisory until monday night here. we're looking at the monterey bay under a beach hazard statement as southerly swells develop increased risk of dangerous rip currents, current wave heights around monterey, bay of four feet, your temperature at this hour are really in the comfort zone 50 to 70. as we check out what's ahead for oakland pride parade this sunday. it's really going to be beautiful weather. 11 a.m, a mild start, 65 degrees. the sun's out for the afternoon, low to upper 70s and later on in the evening, coming down to about 67 degrees. unser hassan and also zach fuentes will be hosting this event. so if you get a chance, go by and say hello, golden gate bridge camera. lovely view right now fog coast and bay overnight summer warmth

for the weekend. we have an isolated possibility of showers in the south bay tomorrow evening. i'll show you that in a moment. and cooler pattern starting on tuesday. so fog in the morning, some higher clouds as well. watch what happens as we see that moisture coming in. there's a potential for a few showers in the southern part of our viewing area. certainly in the sierra, they'll be getting some of that wet weather. your morning temperatures in the 50s and the 60s watch out. they fog may be a little bit dense, especially near the coast for the morning hours tomorrow afternoon, mix of sun and high clouds, a warm day in the south bay 82. san jose, 89in morgan hill, 78 in sunnyvale on the peninsula, you're looking at 82 degrees. in redwood city, 76, palo alto, mid 60s for half moon bay. pacifica 70 in downtown san francisco, 67 in the sunset district, north bay. temperatures really, this is what september is about. lots of sunshine and mild to warm weather. 86 in santa rosa, 83. san rafael heading into the east bay, 75. oakland 73. berkeley 79. fremont at inland areas.

♪ ♪ amy rankin-williams: you became a preschool teacher or a lawyer or a consultant or a construction worker, but inside there was a performance part of you. there was somebody who wanted to be on stage. there was somebody who wanted to do something else. a love of dance, a love of storytelling. you can have your job and have something that you love to go to on weekends and evenings that give you purpose and give you a new sense of life and freedom and fun. ♪ ♪ people will often just, like, laugh at our name, because it tells the whole story of our company, that we are people who like to dance together and we're not professionals. this is a great way for adults to keep going, to stay young, to stay vibrant, to stay vital. ♪ ♪ hi. this is amy.

a lot of meetings. i could see some of these cabinet-level members. emails. writing up documentation. at least a pretty good final draft. i work on the operations team at behavioral health services, supporting the development and finalization of contracts and budgets. we're one of the larger divisions of the san francisco department of public health. if you're in the electronic version, you can see a lot. a job is a job. and they work really hard and they come here and they work even harder, and they love it. i might come home and feel really tired, but when i get to the studio, i am so jazzed and so excited, and i really adore the people that i dance with. what i love about the dance is it's a way to really strengthen your body, stretch your body, and then also you do use a totally different part of your mind in a very creative way

that makes you forget everything else. it makes you forget your day job, your work, the stresses. you're just present. ♪ ♪ i don't call it just dance. it's like dance theater. i think our commitment and our passion about it just really comes through. doree: i hope that we lift them up and they feel fabulous and great at the end of the show. so people have a really good time. people get really inspired and say to me, "i'm going to return to those art classes," or something else that feeds that creative, passionate side that we need to balance our daily work lives. i'm not going to stop, and i hope we have at least another decade or two in us. ♪ let's get started ♪ ♪ ♪ now it's time for a supercharged açaí bowl. ♪ ♪ man: did you know it was a berry from brazil?
