we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather. a nice start to the saturday. >> yeah, it's very nice out there. we have our dense fog, a typical summertime pattern, though. look at coit tower. there where we have partly sunny skies. downtown 55, san francisco, it is 61 in mountain view with upper 50s in palo alto. and as we look at the airport, look how compressed the marine layer is. just a couple of hundred feet there. so it is well into the 70s. today there upper 70s down the peninsula right now 50s a good recovery from the 40s in the north bay. earlier so we are looking at the
8:30 am
cooler weather. a 24 hour temperature change on the peninsula there from san carlos and belmont and the fog still with us up in santa rosa, but it will be fading away, leaving mostly sunny skies through the noon to 1:00 hour. we're in the 70s and 80s everywhere for except along the coast, which will be comfortable in the upper 60s with that onshore flow upper 80s to near 90 inland. so near average today but still a few degrees warmer than yesterday. and we'll see a return of the low clouds tonight. stephanie. >> lisa, thank you. the new cdc director has a fresh warning. covid is here to stay. hospitalizations rose by 16% nationwide from mid to late august, according to cdc data. 26 states, including california , saw hospitalizations climb more than 20% in that same time period. and covid related deaths are also up about 18% last month. cdc officials are recommending people stay up to date on covid vaccines and get tested when they feel sick. for
8:31 am
more on the latest covid headlines, joining me now is ucsf infectious disease physician peter chin-hong. peter, great to have you with us . >> thanks for having me on, stephanie. absolutely >> well, to start off, how would you categorize rise, this latest covid wave? we're seeing? where does it stand now? >> so i think we haven't seen the crest yet. it is more than we thought we would be seeing, but it is still very, you know, small compared to where we were one year ago and where we were during the winter. so i think, you know, it's not like we have to get things out of our mind and not think about covid anymore, nor do we have to live in fear. it's kind of somewhere in between meaning that we can go out but do aware that there are risks depending on who you are and what your immune status is. >> here in the bay area, our deaths also going up. >> um, deaths going up, but only very in a small way. i would say it's easier to look at national
8:32 am
deaths. and i'll give you an example. so we're seeing about 600 deaths a week nationally, and that's down from about 2000 deaths a day at the peak of the covid pandemic. and it's about, you know, i would say about 10% of the deaths over the winter surge, um, right now. so just to give you some perspective, so hospitalizations are tons of cases in the community, but luckily deaths still significant, but not as high as they used to be. >> yeah, that's good perspective. thank you. i wanted to talk more about the new ba2 86 variant. how does it vary from other strains we've seen? yeah >> so all this year we've been seeing flavors which are kind of omicron variants and then this ba 2.86, also known as parola, raise a lot of eyebrows because goes from one to another. it's only about two mutations. but from xb to ba 2.86, it's about 30 mutations. and that's just
8:33 am
like going from an omicron, from going to omicron from delta. so that's why what people worried. but most recently, actually over the last few days, people have been doing laboratory studies and they found that if you get vaccinated with a current booster or with people who got infected recently, that that seems to quell ba 2.86. so in other words, it seems like a paper tiger ba is something to be, you know, mindful of, but not something to be too scared about. >> interesting. now speaking of strains, which one would you say is the most dominant covid variant in the bay area right now? so. >> so right now the most dominant by far is something called ec five, and that's also called eris. it's again a flavor of omicron and it's very closely resembling what the new vaccine is going to look like. so that's good news for all of us, meaning that the vaccine that will be available within the next week
8:34 am
or two would be a close match to what's going around and what we anticipate will be around by the winter surge. >> as you know, peter, there continues to be a lot of covid fatigue as people question whether or not they need their booster for those who are considered fully vaccinated, when do you advise is the best time to get reboosted? >> yeah, so that's a complicated question. and because we haven't seen a crest yet, probably going to advise people who are older and 65 and immune compromised to get it if they haven't gotten 1 in 6 months, as soon as it's available. i think for everybody else, if you get it by halloween , it will give you enough ammunition in to give you some protection before an anticipated even larger increase over the winter. >> okay. good to know what can you tell us about the new covid booster? was pending fda approval? >> yes. so the cdc's going to meet on the 12th and like literally the next day or in two
8:35 am
days, we should probably have it available in drugstores and in places that people normally get their vaccines. it's one strain. it's one time of year. the whole idea is to make this very simplified. instead of saying, oh, i have five shots or four shots, this is it. four months, five months, six months. let's just try to prepare this storm, the house for the storm, once a year with the flu shot, you can get it on the same day. and that's the way i hope we will be on moving forward and we're going to pull up our abc seven covid tracker. >> it shows in late august since the data is a bit backlogged, there were 374 weekly covid cases on average in the bay area. current levels appear to be lower than the peak we saw in march. should we expect to see periodic waves like this for the foreseeable future, or do you ever see that changing? >> that's kind of an interesting question. i think for now it seems like this is the fourth consecutive summer we've had a
8:36 am
covid increase and then we have a larger one in the winter. so it may be that we are going to see this pattern for the next few years of a small bump in the summer and a bigger bump in the winter. and that's because, particularly since climate change is causing a lot of people to go indoors during hot periods in the summer. it's kind of like a reverse winter. and that people coming together and declining immunity, which lasts about six months, all contribute to this like small bump in the summer and a bigger bump in the winter together with influenza and other respiratory viruses. >> okay, interesting. good to know. well, dr. chin-hong, always a pleasure having you with us. are you out doing some uh- some errands this morning? >> yeah, i'm out and about trying to enjoy california weather as much as i can. >> have a wonderful saturday. thank you for being with us. >> thanks so much, stephanie. >> absolutely. well, still ahead on abc7 mornings housing project opposed by north bay activists are calling a new affordable
