some fog. some of it's dense along the coast, but live doppler seven picking up on the remnants of hova with some rain showers in southern california. and you can see the lightning strikes from the mountains there. tuolumne meadows and into nevada. but as we get closer to the fog, you can see it right along the peninsula. so we're quiet here. back at home at a 61 in hayward, 60 in concord with 52 in novato. and there is fog up in santa rosa, half mile visibility a mile and a quarter in novato. and a look at the shark tank there where today if you liked yesterday very similar we're in the 60s around the bay and inland 9:00 50 at the coast and by noontime we're near 80 inland near 90 later on today and the bay shore should be around 80. stephanie lisa, thank you. >> happening today, a celebration of diversity and inclusion. the oakland pride parade is here. the event which runs through downtown oakland is the second largest of its kind in northern california. if you're going, the route begins at 14th and broadw 11 a.m. beeen 20th and 21st at the

city of oakland says this year's festivities ar celebrate progress. yes, and continue to build a more inclusive and equitable future for all. today's big parade comes after a weekend full of fun from family events to the pride bar crawl. it's a fundraiser for oakland pride, which happens at eight different bars that are either lgbtq plus centered and or owned . some bars crafted special drinks just for the occasion. pride organizers tell us the most important message they want everyone to hear is what we're lacking right now in the world is love. >> and ultimately, that's pretty much what we want to promote and make sure that everybody knows is that love conquers all. >> there's not only locals taking part in this weekend's events, folks from out of town are coming in, too, some wanting to check out the festival for the first time. >> i had really never visited a pride here in oakland. i've done sf, i've done a couple of ones,

morocco late friday night. >> many running for safety from restaurants and from their homes. another camera also capturing the moment the quake hit, causing dust and debris to crumble as people tried to get away. the heaviest damage is in morocco's atlas mountains, the epicenter about 45 miles south of marrakesh. the ancient city, home to almost a million people and popular with tourists. >> the room started shaking. there's no other way. we was going backwards and forwards and everything started moving. >> many buildings in the area were not designed to withstand earthquakes and suffered severe damage and many were destroyed. many people sleeping outside concerned about aftershocks. >> there was a lot of damage that happened to a lot of buildings. some of them are mosques, some of them are houses. a lot of communities. ortiz got hurt. >> one survivor in moulaye brahim, captured video of the destruction, a walkway now blocked by piles of concrete and other debris. roads leading to

some hard hit remote mountain villages are also littered with large boulders, making it difficult for rescuers to get through. rescue crews now desperately searching for any survivors who might be buried in the rubble. the injured being transported to hospitals in the region. some taken away by helicopter. the death toll expected to rise. this man says a family of six died in the quake. resident in this small village already burying the dead. chuck sivertsen, abc news, new york. >> just devastating. and the impact is felt here in the bay area, too. local moroccan families are hoping to raise money to help their loved ones in those in need. abc7 news reporter anzar hassan tells us their story. >> la san luis spent much of the day going through videos that his family sent from morocco. >> you can see the kids all the people losing their houses, they're just sitting, you know,

outside with no homes, no shelters. >> luis wife and father are from villages in the atlas mountains , hit by the massive 6.8 earthquake on friday night. some 45 miles south of the popular tourist city of marrakesh. more than 2000 people are dead. thousands more are injured. luis still doesn't know how many family members he lost. >> one member of my wife's family, i mean, her house leveled to the ground and they were spending two nights. now, so far, just in the streets. >> his relatives sent videos showing big boulders that crashed onto the main roads in some cases completely shutting off smaller villages. luis san othman says he can't sleep. it's like crazy for me to process and even imagine because i was just there like, i don't know, august, july, end of july. >> he says it's hard not to think about his cousin's many who are his own age now homeless and sleeping on the street. >> i feel that as a first generation moroccan american to like, give back to my family because majority of my family is

all in morocco. >> so i feel at least a sense of duty to give back to like my loved ones. >> they launched a gofundme page working with an ngo on the ground in morocco, hoping to raise money for food and medical supplies and to build shelter for families ahead of the coming winter. >> if i was ever asked what is the poorest area in morocco, i would say that region. hatem yassin used to work for a travel agency that gave tours to the region, so he knows the area well. >> he says morocco isn't prepared to handle this type of disaster. that's why they are trying to do their part to help. >> they just want food. they want blankets, they want water. and now they are strike with this. it's hard in the east bay . >> ansar hassan, abc7 news in the south bay. >> sheriff deputies in santa clara may soon be armed with tasers. the device was banned in the county for decades following an in-custody death back in 1989. a man died after being restrained and tased. tasers were then taken away from deputies. the san jose spotlight

reports sheriff robert johnson wants to bring them back, which would arm deputies on the streets and in jail facilities. he says the new tasers are more accurate and have built in accountability. if used, they would automatically activate a body camera. california law enforcement agencies plan to beef up patrols this weekend after alerts of a possible la to the bay side show. word of the event is circulating on social media. on saturday, the oakland police department posted information for anyone encountering a sideshow. it says drivers should be prepared to take alternate routes. officers also say they will arrest drivers and spectators involved with these illegal events. in the east bay now rising crime has been a hot topic. that's why hundreds of oakland residents showed up for a community safety meeting with local officials this weekend. there were so many people, there wasn't enough room for people to get in, leaving neighbors locked out. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard was there. >> we first have to acknowledge

why we're here. >> we are in pain. we are suffering. >> oakland neighbors and activists holding this rally addressing fear of a rising crime in their city. how many of you have had gunshots in your neighborhoods? >> quality of life in oakland has deteriorated down to a place where myself and many other people are uncomfortable leaving our homes. >> the rally, held in advance of a community safety meeting at nearby genesis, worship center. >> the city of oakland crime is out of control. it's like the wild, wild west. >> it's why bishop george matthews wanted to host the meeting. >> businesses are leaving. people are scared. >> there was so much interest from the public. the line to get in stretching around the block. but there wasn't enough room inside and dozens were shut out and upset. set up something in our neighborhood. >> not talking. >> we're outside. they're in there, but they're not seeing us. they're not hearing us. how are things going to get fixed? >> inside, church leaders apologized, offering people a

live stream to watch. oakland mayor shang tao talked about her investments in crime prevention, adding security cameras and chp officers on patrol. some have demanded a state of emergency be declared, but the mayor disagrees. and so calling for a state of emergency right now, when we are doing everything, saying that this would allow for us to do to i mean, let's just let's just call it what it is. >> it's just political theater. >> mayor tao says the search continues for a new police chief after leronne armstrong was fired last winter. the opd says violent crime is up 15% this year compared to last. alameda county da pamela price was asked if she favors perpetrators of crime over crime victims. >> i've been representing victims in this community for 30 years, not only that, i am a survivor of domestic violence. >> neighbors say they know creating a safer oakland will take time. but tanya is tired of waiting. >> so there's an emotional weight to living in this town that we shouldn't have to carry

you hear it here? voice of frustration in the north bay. marin city residents are protesting to stop an affordable housing project they say is not needed. it's a story we've been following. they say the five story 74 unit apartment will block views and add congestion to an already overcrowded and narrow neighborhood. this week, residents were granted a temporary injunction in marin county superior court. $49 million. that's how much the oakland based kaiser is paying to settle its claims it illegally dumped hazardous waste and patient health information. inspections reportedly found everything from drugs and syringes to paper records all headed to the landfill. the settlement involves six california counties, including three in the bay area. alameda san francisco and san mateo. kaiser said it learned about the problems years ago and acknowledged the items, quote, should have been disposed

differently. tsay. dozens turned out at pier 27in san francisco this weekend, walking to shine a light on efforts to prevent suicide. the out of the darkness community walk was hosted by the greater bay area chapter of the american foundation for suicide prevention. the event is meant to show people they're not alone. beautiful >> but when we come to our out of the darkness walks and you put on your honor beads that represent the type of loss or the type of experience that you have, it takes away that veil that usually is on mental health. there's one message that you take from this event today. it's exactly that you're not alone. it's okay to struggle. and there's a community around you. >> a strong message. and the money to support it. organizers say they raised $93,000 short of half of their $200,000 goal. suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the country. we have put together a whole list of resources for anyone dealing with mental health issues. you can find it by going

to abc7 news.com. com slash take action and the suicide and crisis lifeline can be reached by dialing 988. well, two variants of covid 19 are causing a spike in hospitalized asians both in california and across the country. according to the cdc. hospitalizations are up 16% nationwide from mid to late august, and california saw a 20% spike during that same time period in yesterday's 8 a.m. show, i spoke with ucsf infectious disease specialist dr. peter chin-hong. he says we could continue to see late summer covid waves in the future. >> it may be that we are going to see this pattern for the next few years of a small bump in the summer and a bigger bump in the winter. and that's because, particularly since climate change is causing a lot of people to go indoors during hot periods in the summer, it's kind of like a reverse winter. >> cdc officials are urging the public to stay up to date on covid vaccines and get tested when they feel sick. a new covid

19 booster is expected in the coming weeks. new this morning, hundreds of schools across the state are being audited right now for high un vaccination rates. as many as 500 are reporting over 10% of their students are not fully vaccinated. this includes more than half of oakland's elementary schools and eight of their middle schools. the highest rate of vaccinated children is a kindergarten class of 11 in humboldt, with 90% needing at least one vaccine. san francisco is getting ready to host an estimated 40,000 people as the dreamforce conference kicks off on tuesday . the event is still two days away, but howard street between third and fourth streets has been closed for construction. dreamforce is one of the biggest tech events in the world. the conference continues this year with a spotlight on new developments with ai. salesforce ceo marc benioff says dreamforce may leave san francisco next year because of concerns about the city's drug crisis and homelessness. a tech company in

san francisco put up $2 million for the city to host the apec summit in november. according to our media partners at the san francisco standard cryptocurrency platform, ripple labs made the largest donation to the event so far. this brings the total raise to $11.5 million since no public funds can be used. other companies to contribute include kaiser permanente, visa and salesforce . hurricane lee is expected to ramp back up after it weakened yesterday to a category two. the national hurricane center says it will strengthen to a category four by tomorrow. it's still too early to know how significant the hurricane's impact will be on the northeast. for now, the east coast will be experiencing large swells and rip currents through the week. closer to home now, meteorologist lisa argent is tracking what you can expect across the bay area this sunday. good morning. >> good morning. now looking at the remnants of this tropical system that brought in some

interesting clouds and also lightning strikes is just south of the bay area. and as we go in closer rain showers off the coast of southern california. you can see them moving into los angeles. pretty soon, santa barbara. so a cloudy, humid and wet day from san luis obispo south and more lightning strikes from the mountains, the sierra nevada through nevada. and as we get back home, there is more fog from all that action to the south, the low clouds and fog have ramped up from the peninsula to the south bay. up in the north bay, but so far clear inland we are half mile visibility. santa rosa and novato, but we expect the fog to move in a little bit further to the east but still provide a lot of sunshine even at the coast today. 56 downtown it is 58 in oakland with 51 in napa and santa rosa. there's our roof camera, cloudy skies here. so the fog more widespread this morning, but we are still looking at sunny and warm conditions today and tomorrow. breezy and cooler weather arrive

on tuesday. beach hazard statement until 11:00 tonight around santa cruz where we have that southerly swell from that tropical system offshore. more so 4 to 8ft break in waves and looking at those south facing beaches, particularly with the dangerous conditions and the possibility of rip currents there. so certainly want to be careful if you're headed to the coast. there's a look at the fog this morning. look how it pulls back. it's 1130. we're sunny everywhere. and then it even wipes away from the coast, not only the marin county coast, but even san mateo getting sunshine there from half moon bay to pacifica. but into your monday, it comes back across the bay into the east bay. it'll be a while till it pulls back. we still have a nice day on the way, but look how it sort of sticks to the san mateo coast as we get into the later afternoon. so some changes, subtle ones day to day into your monday. pretty nice day. average 70s downtown to near 90 inland. but by tuesday we're looking at a cooling trend. the breezier

winds and temperatures as much as 5 to 8 degrees cooler, perhaps inland. looks like we'll get a little bump back in the temperatures on wednesday for a near average reading. so all in all, a pretty good weather if you wanted to with some sunshine and warmer conditions, 71 with those breezy winds and 60s at the coast, look for 75 near average in oakland and low 80s in the south bay with mid to perhaps some upper 80s in our inland north bay. as we look at our east bay 88 in livermore with 89 for you in concord today. so the accuweather seven day forecast we're looking at the 60s cool beach weather with the breezy winds. some sun though today there mid 70s around the bay about 90 inland more fog tomorrow temperatures will still manage to be pleasant near average then the cooldown on tuesday and it looks like we get into a pattern that brings us those 60s, 70s and 80s. the rest of the week. so pretty nice out there while all the activity is around us, right?

stay ahead. time now, 524. here at abc seven, we are working to build a better bay area. and one part of those efforts is telling you about plans meant to boost our local economy. the city of san francisco is partnering with renowned chef tyler florence to open two cafes on the plaza. abc7 news reporter leanne melendez tells us about this new project. >> ask any san francisco resident and they'll tell you it's not only the crime and homeless situation keeping

people away from the downtown area and also if you look around the streets, there's a lot of garbage. >> the streets aren't very clean. the recovery following covid has been slower than in other major cities. our neighborhoods are booming, but our downtown has a 31% office vacancy rate. and that is really going to take a while to chip away at as part of the larger plan to revitalize the area. >> the city has invited renowned chef tyler florence to take over the two cafes on the plaza. both will be called miller and lux provisions. one will be on the stockton side, the other on the powell side on stockton. >> it's going to be what we're calling the savory shop. it's going to be rotisserie chicken and spectacular farmers, market side dishes and all day brunch menu. >> the second cafe will feature the works of pastry chef carla morrow. >> we're going to have spectacular our croissants. pano chocolate, beautiful barista craft coffee. >> chef lawrence is proposal managed to beat other competitors. the cafes will sign

september 11th terror attacks. president joe biden is marking the somber anniversary with a $4 million award to the 9/11 memorial in new york city. the funding comes from the 9/11 memorial act grant program. both the president and the first lady will be taking part in separate ceremonies to honor the nearly 3000 lives lost. vice president kamala harris will attend the 9/11 memorial events in new york as well. today several 9/11 events will be held all around the bay area. mayor london breed will join the fire department in hosting the annual september 11th memorial ceremony at 930 in san francisco at saint anne of the sunset church on judah street and in the south bay at 10 a.m, state senator dave cortez and santa clara county sheriff robert johnson host a day of remembrance event at the sheriff's office. the office is located on west younger avenue between north san pedro and north first streets. still ahead on abc7 mornings, another effort

increase in sales of tests, but claim they have the inventory to meet the country's needs. manufacturers blame issues on the sudden increase in demand, not a drop in production. they also say they're even ramping up production ahead of fall. today is the last day for the legacy fleet of bart trains. bart promises more trains and shorter wait times with an updated service schedule, which makes the original fleet of trains obsolete. there will be an official retiring ceremony for the cars next year, but the mowbray bound red line train tonight will be the last one to run in the base schedule, all starting tomorrow. wait times will be no more than 20 minutes. even on nights and weekends. on all lines as vtr officials are weighing whether to put narcan on busses and trains. abc7 news south bay reporter zach fuentes has a look at the plan. >> fentanyl overdose deaths have been a problem plaguing the south bay. >> we have had a death as young as three months old from fentanyl poisoning all the way

up to you middle aged adults. >> now a referral by county supervisor cindy chavez aims to put overdose reversal treatment narcan on vta busses, light rail cars and transit stations. chavez is also a vice chair on vta's board of directors. >> we want to make narcan available and make it ubiquitous, really anywhere that people are. >> this vta passenger who did not want to go on camera says he recently witnessed what he believes was an overdose on a bus. >> the paramedics came and had to take him off the bus and he was unconscious. and i don't know what happened to him after that, but i think that if he was dying, that narcan on the bus could have helped. >> we also spoke with other public transit users who support the possibility. >> i don't see any downsides to it if it can, you know, potentially save someone's life. >> but some have reservations, including some vta employees. i spoke with one who did not want to go on camera, vta passenger william was also part of that conversation. i got a big education here today. >> the concern center around the pressure it could put on vta employees during an emergency,

like giving mouth to mouth or something like that, that you've been practicing your whole life. and now you see somebody overdosing on drugs and you don't know exactly if you're doing the right thing and the right time. >> chavez says training, education and support will be key. >> very easy to use. it's a nasal spray that can be sprayed very quickly, and it's intended to keep spraying as you keep the person alert until help arrives. and because of that, the training is not long. it's not complicated. and while i think it could for some people feel like a lot of pressure, i think for others it will feel like an opportunity to help. >> for now, the referral would direct staff to look into the possibility of equipping vehicles and centers with narcan. if the board votes in favor of doing that thursday night, they would work with the transit union on the best ways to start the program. if that happens, chavez hopes vta will have the narcan by the beginning of next year. in san jose, zach fuentes, abc7 news. >> the point reyes national seashore held its first public meeting on its proposal to remove a controversial fence.
