we also, you know, can't really believe that we happen to be there for their biggest earthquake in 120 years. >> san francisco residents caught in the chaos of a deadly earthquake in morocco are making their way home tonight as the country begins three days of national mourning. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm j.r stone. let's get right to the latest on the rescue efforts underway in morocco. the death toll stands at more than 2000 victims as a result of the 6.8 magnitude quake which struck friday night. thousands more have been injured, many terrified moroccans are spending the night on the street, too afraid to return to their homes. the epicenter was not far from the popular tourist hub, marrakesh, where historic sites have been damaged. but the hardest hit areas are those nearest to the atlas mountains, a bay area family that was visiting morocco when the shaking began is sharing a frightening story about the quake. they tell abc seven news

reporter cornell bernard the quake ready training they learned growing up here helped to keep them calm. >> it's insanely beautiful. it's really an interesting mix of cultures. >> it was a dream moroccan vacation for my friends, the garnet hunter family from marin and san francisco. but their last day visiting marrakesh was truly unforgettable. this was the terrifying moment. the 6.8 magnitude quake struck morocco late friday night. >> it was the scariest earthquake i've ever lived through. christina garnet and daughter natalie say they feared their three story hotel would collapse. >> so me and my mom are just looking at each other and then suddenly we're like, we got to run to the door because we've been training for this. our whole lives. we're from san francisco. we've lived through earthquakes, and we know about earthquakes. but there's still a few seconds where you're like kind of in disbelief. >> many ran for safety from homes and restaurants. the epicenter, about 45 miles south of marrakesh, the heaviest damage in morocco's atlas mountains. the family capturing

these images of quake debris in the old medina section of marrakesh. we evacuated after about 15, 20 minutes, our hosts made us leave and we walked to the main square where there were hundreds of people gathered. here's what they saw, patrick says. many people were in shock and there was fear of aftershocks as it's really difficult to hear about the damages that were done the next morning we walked through town and the bakers chimney had fallen off and we had talked to him the night before and he was trying to get bread out to the community, trying to feed people amid the tragedy. and rising death toll, the family says there's hope and resilience. >> so it's just this amazing community spirit that really struck us. it was just it was wonderful. they were just going to keep going. >> the family has now traveled out of morocco, but hope to return soon. >> we just want to send a lot of love and support to the people of morocco in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc seven news.

>> a man made it out of a suspected road rage incident unharmed after he says he was shot at on the bay bridge. chp has not confirmed the incident as a shooting, saying it's possible a bottle was thrown. abc seven news spoke with the victim who says somebody drove up behind him aggressively on eastbound i-80. i kind of held my hands up. >> one was out the window and just like, what's going on? and he didn't like that. i reacted to his driving and so he went in front of the next car in front of me, and then he he slammed on his brakes. he kept slamming on his brakes. and i kept going slower and slower. we went down to 35 miles an hour right when i was going past him, he had the passenger window down, obviously, and he shot one gun, one gun shot out. >> that man says he was followed into oakland until he arrived at a police station on when the suspect finally drove off. chp says the situation is under

investigation. it is pride weekend in oakland and the celebration hit its stride today with the city's pride parade through downtown. the parade was streamed live on the abc7 app. abc7 news reporter unzer hasson was one of the hosts. he has a wrap up of today's events. >> as has become tradition, first came the dikes on bikes leading off the 2023 oakland pride and pride fest. >> great pride weekend. this is this is huge for oakland. small business owner and oakland resident nina joyner was among the thousands who attended the parade that came through downtown oakland. >> even having fun today. what's been the most exciting part? um marching with my school. among the contingents this year, several schools, including the oakland unified school district and kaiser permanente, one of the largest employers in oakland , also marched. >> where we see cities and

billions of dollars worth of solano county farmland has revealed a plan to quite literally build a better bay area. they want to build a new city. since 2018, flannery ciat has quietly acquired more tn 55,000 acres of land, some of which is now surrounding travis air force base. the firm's parent company, california forever revealed the plans to build a new community after launching this website last week. this week, the firm will continue meeting with local, state and federal officials to discuss their vision. fairfield mayor catherine moy recently met with the firm's ceo. she spoke with

abc7 news i-team reporter stephanie sierra about those discussed options. >> you've raised numerous concerns before about all this, including access to water, lack of infrastructure. did you get a sense of how they plan to tackle that? well well i know that they have some water rights, but is it enough for a city? >> absolutely not. i sit on the water agency as mayor. we've turned down mills tens of dollars from from flannery to buy some of our land because they wanted it close to the base . it doesn't make sense to me. still so now, to add to that, did you get a better understanding of how this city will be powered? well that is a bit of an issue. they said that what they are going to do is do mostly solar farms and that's a problem or it could be a problem with an air base because a reflection. but there are new

solar panels that you can use on bases and some do. so that's what they're talking about. we know that p-g-and-e's does not have the power grid to hold up a new city. they can't even open some of our new car dealership. so those are on generators or were because p-g-and-e's can't can't do it. so it's not coming from there. >> that's interesting. well, last time we spoke, you discussed potential access to a large amount of natural gas underground where flannery has acquired land. do you have reason to believe that this could be related to these purchases? >> i actually do. there is a lot of natural gas or was and used, but deep down, from what i understand from some people and i'm still digging into it, is that there is a lot of natural gas deeper in underground. and the problem is access is congressman john garamendi raised concerns last week. >> the firm may move forward with an initiative that could

impact zoning requirements around travis. but flannery has since told us they don't plan to build any homes within one mile of the base. do you think there's reason to be concerned about that? i do. >> it's my biggest concern. when i did ask john about this and john told me that that they are moving forward and in november, during the presidential election here, we will have on our ballot something that will actually take away the current general plan for solano county. now you mentioned before you asked the ceo, john sramek, why why he purchased the land surrounding travis air force base. >> what was his response to that? he said he wants to protect the base. >> um, i'm i'm i'm not believing everything he's saying. i need to be convince first that that's what he wants. but it certainly uncomfortable for the base. i

lately. we have its perfect blue skies behind us and all around the bay area. >> in fact, it's so quiet on live doppler seven, we're not picking up any clouds, any moisture in the sky. the only thing you need to look out for is the beach hazards in monterey bay. this is in effect until 11:00 this evening because of a strong southerly swell, 4 to 8 foot breaking waves are possible , especially for south facing beaches. and this does increase your risk of dangerous rip currents. right now, they're at about five feet in monterey bay. and just gorgeous from mount tam. as we look south, you can see san francisco go there. blue skies all around. temperatures really warmed up. inland but it has been cooler at the coast. san francisco, 65 degrees right now. oakland down to 69. but we're still seeing 70s in mountain view, san jose, 78 half moon bay has been one of the cooler spots with that sea breeze and partly cloudy conditions at 63 from emeryville. we're looking across the bay and you can see san francisco there. a little bit of

the ripple with a light sea breeze around 10 to 15 miles an hour in santa rosa, still 85 degrees. novato 82. napa, 77. fairfield had hit about 95 today. right now it's at 89. upper 80s in concord and livermore at 84 degrees, down from 90 earlier. and what you'll notice is the lack of cloud cover and the marine layer at the golden gate bridge. so it will be mostly clear tonight, sunny again tomorrow, but it could be a few degrees cooler in some spots and then it's going to be even breezier and cooler on tuesday will be below normal. temperatures will come down. another average of four degrees for most areas. here's a look at the forecast animation. so midnight tonight, notice not too many clouds, even 7:00 tomorrow morning. the marine layer is just along the coast, mainly the san mateo county coast. lots of sunshine, but then the clouds will really push in into tuesday morning. and that's when we see the cooler weather. temperatures tonight mainly in the 50s cooler
