>> the search for survivors this morning in morocco after a major earthquake rattled the region, killing more than 2000 people. the reaction from one bay area family who was there when it struck and it is september 11th, 2023 today, marking 22 years since the deadly terrorist attack on nine divided by 11. >> ceremonies and tributes are happening across the country this morning, including right here in the bay area. >> good morning, everybody, and thank you here for being with us. >> it's monday, september 11th. we're going to start the check of our forecast with drew. >> hey, good morning. it's going to be a nice day today. a lot of sunshine, warm temperatures. look outside. here's our east bay hills camera. we are lacking fog this morning. you can clearly see all the city lights across the region. so we're going to see sunshine pretty fast this morning. but we do have some chilly spots right now. look at half moon bay and nevada waking up to temperatures right now in the 40s. so we do have some chilly air in spots. might need the light jacket and a couple of locations this morning. 50s and 60s for the

most part away from the coast. here's future weather as we go hour by hour. we're getting into the 60s. by 9 a.m, we'll have some patchy cloud cover along the coast. our marine layer is pretty mixed out right now, so we're not expecting any dense fog throughout the day. and as we head into the afternoon, our warmest areas will go into the 90s. we expect a lot of 70s around the bay shoreline. it's a day filled with a lot of sunshine and temperatures, maybe a couple of degrees above average for this time of the year, 70in the city today going to 75. in oakland, 82 in san jose, 88. in santa rosa, up to 90. in antioch, 92. in fairfield . that's your monday weather. let's check out traffic. good morning, sue. >> good morning, drew. good morning, everyone. fog free on the golden gate. just a beautiful morning. a little sliver of a moon coming up and over the waldo grade. you are three lanes southbound, three lanes northbound for now. before the zipper truck gets in action and gives you four lanes in the southbound direction. i did find a stall. it looks like they have moved it out of lanes, but you can see the red cones and the right lane are the red flares, i

should say, blocking off the right lane. it's clear, as you can see, that car just now merging before those flares. so no slow traffic here, but they got that accident or that stall out of the way. that's good news . and we will check another accident car facing the wrong way. middle lane westbound 80 near potrero. things are stacking up into richmond now. ladies thank you, sue. >> new this morning bart is rolling out its latest plan to revitalize the transit agency and that includes retiring older train cars and overhauling the scheduling system. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez live this morning with the details on all the changes. good morning, gloria. >> good morning. yeah, starting this morning, you will notice some big changes coming to bart and many riders are excited about these new changes. so here they are. first of all, there will only be a 20 minute maximum wait for a train. there will be more trains running at night. the wait for a train on the yellow will only be 10 to 15

minutes on weekdays and more trains will run to sfo. >> now we know that more people are traveling on the weekends and in the evenings, so we've increased the service by 50% on evenings and weekends and night was the last time the old style bart trains were running in the system. >> so they'll only be used on rare occasions, trains. and by the way, today is bart's 51st anniversary, and that's why they're rolling out these new changes today. live in san francisco, gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. thank you, gloria. >> today marks 22 years since the nine by 11 attacks, 2753 people died in lower manhattan that day. and just this weekend , the medical examiner identified the remains of two more people, 40% of those lost are still unidentified. the testing of remains all these years later is part of a pledge so that the families of as many victims as possible can have closure. 341 members of the new

york fire department have now died from ground zero related illnesses. the tribute and lights shined during a test overnight just hours before the tribute to the victims of the world trade center's san francisco's fire department will be holding a commemoration at 645 this morning. >> that is the moment when the twin towers in new york city were hit. the names of the fallen first responders will also be read aloud. today's remembrance ceremony is happening at all san francisco fire department facilities as this list now started over the weekend here in the bay area, santa clara county officials hosted a remembrance ceremony yesterday morning in san jose. in san francisco, mayor london breed and members of the city's fire department took time to reflect on the events of that day at saint anne of the sunset church. abc news will have live coverage of the moment of the moment of silence

that's being held this morning at ground zero in new york city . you can watch it live around 544 right here on abc seven. and wherever you stream, develop news, north korean leader kim jong un is reportedly on his way to russia. >> a multiple south korean media outlets say kim is traveling by train for a meeting with russian president vladimir putin. the kremlin confirmed the meeting overnight, but they did not give specifics of the meeting. but putin reportedly already arrived in the city where the meeting is said to be taking place. us officials believe kim and putin will discuss the arms negotiations that have been advancing between their countries in morocco this morning. it's a race to find survivors days after a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the country on friday, entire villages have been leveled. it is the worst seismic event in northern africa the northern african country has seen in decades. i should say more than 2100 people have been confirmed dead. thousands more

have been injured. right now, many terrified moroccans are spending the night in the streets to afraid to return inside their homes. the epicenter was not far from the popular tourist hub called marrakesh. historic sites there have been damaged as well. us secretary of state antony blinken says it has been very clear to morocco that the us is prepared to assist in any way it can. a bay area family was visiting morocco as that shaking began and now they are sharing a frightening story. >> they tell abc seven news reporter cornell bernard. the quake ready training they learned growing up here in the bay area helped them stay calm. it's insanely beautiful. >> it's really an interesting mix of cultures. >> it was a dream moroccan vacation for my friends. the garnet hunter family from marin and san francisco. but their last day visiting marrakesh was truly unforgettable. this was the terrifying moment, the 6.8

magnitude quake struck morocco late friday night. >> it was the scariest earthquake i've ever lived through. >> christina garnet and daughter natalie say they feared their three story hotel would collapse . >> me and my mom are just looking at each other and then suddenly we're like, we got to run to the door because we've been training for this. our whole lives. we're from san francisco. we've lived through earthquakes and we know about earthquakes. but there's still a few seconds where you're like kind of in disbelief. >> many ran for safety from homes and restaurants. the epicenter about 45 miles south of marrakesh, the heaviest damage in morocco's atlas mountains. the family capturing these images of quake debris in the old medina section of marrakesh. >> we evacuated after about 15, 20 minutes. our host made us leave and we walked to the main square where there were hundreds of people gathered. >> here's what they saw. patrick says many people were in shock and there was fear of aftershocks. it's really

difficult to hear about the damages that were done. >> the next morning we walked through town and the bakers chimney had fallen off and we had talked to him the night before and he was trying to get bread out to the community, trying to feed people. >> amid the tragedy and rising death toll, the family says there's hope and resilience. >> so it's just this amazing community spirit that really struck us. it was just it it was wonderful. they were just going to keep going. >> the family has now traveled out of morocco but hope to return soon. >> we just want to send a lot of love and support to the people of morocco. >> in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc seven news. happening now, some spectacular images are coming out of hawaii's big island. >> mount kilauea is erupting again just three months after it last spewed lava. and you can see it shooting into the air. this all happening overnight. geologists say there isn't an immediate threat, but the hawaiian volcano observatory has raised the alert level to a warning as they assess potential hazard. they say strong winds

send particles flying to further distances, which if people are exposed to, can cause skin and eye irritation. >> hurricane lee churning in the atlantic ocean is expected to ramp back up after it weakened yesterday to a category two storm. the national hurricane center says it's expected to strengthen to a category four today. now it's still too early to know how significant the hurricane's impact is going to be on the northeast. but for now , the east coast is being warned about large swells and rip currents drew. >> we're watching the storm very closely, the track especially. but of course, those rip currents are the immediate concern along a lot of the beaches across the east coast for us. the week ahead, it is going to be a very quiet pattern. we have a lot of sunshine in store, really comfortable temperatures outside this morning. we have great visibility. we are clear out there. your air quality is good today. tomorrow wednesday, and really for the entire week ahead, our aqi will stay in the green. here's live. doppler seven along with satellite. we do have a cold front off the coast. it's a dry, cold front,

meaning when it crosses over us late tonight, early tomorrow morning, it will not bring any moisture, but it will kick up our winds and introduce some cooler weather into the forecast tomorrow afternoon. but taking a look at your day planner today, we have that sun early on coming up here at 648 this morning. it's mild for lunchtime and then it's sunny and warm throughout the afternoon. we'll have some patchy fog along the coastline keeping temperatures there in the 60s. but away from the coast, it is bright, 70 and 80 for most of us. later on this afternoon. and then that breeze will kick up later on this evening. highs today, very nice when it comes to our temperatures. 70 and 80 around the bay shoreline, our warmest spots in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees and a few locations. looking at the three day forecast, we'll have that cold front move through overnight. that drops temperatures a little bit breezier tomorrow, but we'll bounce back a bit by by wednesday. we'll take a look at the complete seven day forecast, jobina. coming up in about nine minutes. >> thank you, drew. still ahead here, the grizzly bear attack that has portions of a national forest shut down this morning.

like this magical dreamforce land and it's hugely impactful for the hotel industry and all of the restaurants and the uber drivers and cab drivers, the entire economy and we're really geared up at all of our hotels. >> things get underway tomorrow morning starting at 7 a.m. and benioff will hold his hold his keynote at ten. this year's speakers include everyone from the ceo of openai, the company that created chatgpt. actor matthew mcconaughey and animal activist dr. jane goodall. >> salesforce is billing this week's dreamforce conference as the biggest ai event of the year . tech companies everywhere are now seemingly in an arms race to win in the artificial intelligence space. the parent company of facebook and instagram, menlo park based meta, is now reportedly working on an ai system designed to be as powerful as the san francisco

based openai system that created chatgpt. that's according to the wall street journal. meta is aiming for the system to be ready by next year. on wednesday, ceo mark zuckerberg will join other top tech executives to discuss the future of ai in a summit organized by senate majority leader chuck schumer. ceos from openai and google will also be attending a local tech company put up $2 million for the city to host the apex summit in november. according to our media partners at the san francisco standard cryptocurrency platform, ripple labs made the largest donation to the event so far this brings the total raise to 11 and one half million since no public funds can be used. other companies to contribute include kaiser permanente, visa and salesforce. >> fans of the iphone are about to find out about a new change this week at apple's headquarters in cupertino. the iphone 15 is rumored to ditch

>> yeah, that's true. 50 of the other ones. yes. what was that? white whiterun can't find it outside this morning. we do not have a lot of fog. half moon bay is the only spot right now. that is dealing with any sort of reduced visibility. but three miles is not all that bad this time of the year. we can get visibility even lower than that. so out there right now, we have clear skies, temperatures for the most part are in the 50s. but you see a couple of pockets along the coast and in parts of the north bay, we're in the 40s right now, 48. some of our cooler numbers. so some chilly spots first thing this morning, but we'll bounce back very nicely. that sunshine going to warm us up for above average temperatures, but the breeze will kick up again this afternoon. that onshore flow will strengthen as we watch a cold front move through here. and that will keep wins elevated overnight. tonight we'll find those winds breezy in spots as we head into tuesday morning. and that will lead to another breezy, if not windy afternoon tomorrow. so highs today. enjoy the sunshine. we'll have comfortable temperatures a few degrees above average in a couple of spots, 70s and 80s around the bay shoreline and our warmest areas and the upper 80s

to lower 90s. then overnight tonight we'll have more fog than we have right now. that marine layer becomes a little bit more established. so we'll see partly to mostly cloudy skies. it is breezy and those temperatures falling into the 50s and the 60s. here's a quick look at the accuweather 70 forecast cooler and breezier tomorrow. then we'll go bounce back a little bit wednesday thursday day but you notice the pattern little change in our day to day temperatures a little bit cooler over the weekend. but expect morning fog to afternoon sunshine. temperatures in the 70s and 80s away from the coast sue all right. >> we're taking a look at san rafael, a live look outside and traffic is flowing nicely past the north gate mall. those tail lights headed in the southbound direction past lucas valley road and san pedro road. so good traffic there this morning. it's about a 20 minute drive across the golden gate bridge and a solid stream of headlights says 80 westbound through emeryville on into the bay bridge and there you go, highway four to the city. your drive time this morning earlier overturn in richmond west 8-80 has been

everything kicks off this morning. good morning, everybody . it is monday, september 11th. >> yes, we're going to start with a check of the weather with drew, who's back with us this morning. >> hi, friends. good morning. and we have a really nice day in store. we have a lot of sunshine on the way, very comfortable temperatures. you take a live look outside from the exploratorium camera and we have clear skies over the city. there's just minimal fog right now along the immediate coastline. we're going to see a lot of sunshine this morning and it's going to warm us up this afternoon. but we are starting out with some chilly spots like a novato half moon bay at 48 degrees. might need the light jacket there. but elsewhere we're mainly in the 50s to begin our monday. here's future weather. just a little bit of patchy fog along the coastline. a lot of sunshine today 70s and 80s by lunchtime and we do expect our warmest cities to approach about 90 degrees later on this afternoon. so we're a couple of degrees above average for this time of year. a pleasant 70 in the city, 75 in oakland hit about 82 with sunshine in san jose, 84 in napa and then inland here's our warm spots upper 80s to lower 90s by

about 4 p.m. that's a look at your monday forecast. let's see how we're doing with traffic with sue. good morning. >> good morning, drew. and we're going to take a look at our friends in walnut creek. 680, those taillights headed south bound past north main on to highway 24. it's all moving quite nicely if you're drive this morning, takes you from concord towards highway 24 all the way towards the caldecott tunnel. you are moving at the limit, no issues. and here's 880 through oakland. if you've got to fly out of the oakland airport this morning, you're looking great. those headlights headed southbound and just past the coliseum as you can see, we had this problem earlier in richmond, el cerrito. it's right on the border westbound 80 near potrero. it was an overturned vehicle blocking the middle lane or i should say a wrong way vehicle that's been cleared and the right lane still remains closed and boom, you are backed up to san pablo. ladies >> thank you, sue. a major change this morning as you take bart during your commute. the agency is launching a new schedule to improve service and they are no longer running the

older trains. i know people are happy about that. abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez is live in san francisco with what you need to know before you head out. hi, gloria. >> good morning. jobina. yeah if you ride bar, i think you'll be happy with these new changes. the agency is promising no more of those 30 minute waits and also more service on nights and weekends. and some of the changes that bart is rolling out starting today. also include only using that new fleet of trains. no longer any of the legacy trains. also a new schedule, a bart spokesperson says that people now have different travel patterns so they increase the service 50% on weekends and evenings. bart is moving to shorter trains as well. instead of nine and ten car trains. and that's for safety. >> a couple of advantages. one is that people won't be alone in their train cars as often. also it provides a shorter distance for our police officers and other police personnel to patrol

add congestion to already overcrowded and narrow neighborhoods. last week, residents got a temporary injunction in marin county superior court. oakland based kaiser permanente is paying $49 million to settle claims it illegally dumped hazardous waste and patient health information. inspections reportedly found everything from drugs and syringes to paper records, all heading to the landfill. the settlement involves six california counties, including three here in the bay area. alameda, san francisco and san mateo. kaiser said it learned about the problem years ago and acknowledged the items, quote, should have been disposed of differently in the east bay. >> a rise in crime has been a hot topic. that's what hundreds of residents in oakland were doing to or were wanting to talk about when they showed up to a community safety meeting. but there were so many people there that some were locked out. abc seven news was at the genesis worship center, where mayor shengtao talk about her investments in crime prevention.

getting anxious again this week and i was talking to the police for about an hour. i just want him to be caught. >> 34 year old was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend in front of her two kids. police believe cavalcante is still in pennsylvania. they're urging people in the area to secure their cars. a $20,000 reward is being offered in the search. >> a bear attack has closed part of montana's national forest. a grizzly bear mauled a person on friday. and first responders helped evacuate. the person from gallatin national forest. it happened near big sky in the rocky mountains. authorities say a hunting party was looking for deer in the area when the bear attacked the status of the injured person is not known right now. >> progress finally being made to get an american trapped deep in a cave in turkey back to the surface. ace mark dickey is a cave researcher. he got trapped more than 3400ft below ground. august 31st after falling seriously ill while on an expedition after getting medical
