escape? here's abc's trevor ault. >> today is a great day here in chester county. our nightmare is finally over, and the good guys won. >> reporter: convicted murderer danilo cavalcante, captured today, 30 miles from the prison. the two-week-long manhunt outside philadelphia for the armed and dangerous criminal coming to an end early this morning. >> confirmed subject is in custody? >> subject is in custody. >> yes! >> reporter: cavalcante's escape and the subsequent manhunt took place across a large area in chester county, pennsylvania. much of it densely wooded. behind a john deere store, cornered by upwards of 500 law enforcement officers, police, tactical teams, and a k9 unit. >> we basically just saw them checking treelines, checking the stream.

and out of nowhere, everybody started congregating right by the shed. >> reporter: the manhunt gripped the nation, involving law enforcement agencies from across the country. >> it's dark out here tonight, you know? dark street lamps. if there's someone on the loose, as skilled as he is, he could be anywhere. >> reporter: the 34-year-old convicted of first-degree murder for the 2021 homicide of his ex-girlfriend, deborah brandow in which he stabbed her dozens of times in front of her children. august 31st, just days after being sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, he broke out of the chester county prison where he was waiting to be transferred to a state correctional institution. >> i am not demeaning county

jails across the country, they do a great job. but they don't have the level of security others do. they don't have the big walls, security walls, they may not have the staffing that a federal penitentiary does or the level of expertise. >> reporter: in fact, cavalcante used the same escape route another inmate had already used this may. his daring escape involved a stunning crabwalk up a wall, pushing his way through razor wire, running across the prison roof. it wasn't until an hour later he was noticed missing. the prison was then locked down. >> given an hour's time, pretty substantial. he's able to run. he's a desperate man. he doesn't need a lot, 5 foot, 120 pounds. he can run fast and keep going. >> reporter: from there a search ensued, a perimeter established. cavalcante popping up throughout the surrounding area. ryan drummond says on september 1st, he saw the convict steal food from inside his house, believing cavalcante entered through an unlocked door.

>> i saw him come out of the kitchen into the living room, back to that french door, out the deck. by that time, i grabbed the phone, my wife was dialing 911. he's in our house, he just left. >> reporter: september 2nd, spotted on camera around 1:45 a.m. on a residential doorbell camera. he was later seen twice on a trail camera at a botanical garden about five mills from the prison wearing a hoodie with a duffel bag. police say cavalcante slipped through their perimeter this past weekend, stealing this unlocked white ford van with the keys inside. >> so that gives him legs, so to speak. the ability to get out of the area that really prolonged this search. >> reporter: he went to the phoenixville area saturday, trying to contact former co-workers. he met briefly with one of them via that door camera and that

colleague called local police. state police weren't notified for several hours. by that time cavalcante was already gone. he later abandoned that van when it ran out of gas. 25 miles north of where police had been searching. monday, armed search teams swarmed that dense terrain. by then the search was much more dangerous, as authorities reported cavalcante had acquired a weapon. >> he is armed with a .-caliber rifle with scope and flashlight mounted on it. i would suspect he's desperate enough to use that weapon. >> reporter: police say he stole that rifle from the garage of a home, encountering the homeowner face-to-face. that homeowner drawing a pistol, firing multiple shots. cavalcante got away unscathed, a sweatshirt and t-shirt found on the driveway. >> hispanic male, 30 years of age, 5 foot. we does have a .22 cut-off rifle

with scope and flashlight. >> it's terrifying, to say the least. >> reporter: talia lives next door to the homeowner who encountered cavalcante. >> we have helicopters over top, we have police officers everywhere, undercover, marked, fbi. we have tactical, guys going through our woods in camo with large ars. >> reporter: then at about 1:00 a.m. wednesday, pennsylvania state police said a dea aircraft picked up a heat signature when intense weather and lightning hampered their search efforts. a joint force from the state police, fbi, and border patrol surrounded him. a police dog ultimately subduing him. >> they were able to move in very quietly. they had the element of surprise. that did not stop him from trying to escape. he began to crawl through thick underbrush, taking his rifle with him as he went. one of the customs and border control teams had a dog with

them. they released the dog. >> reporter: according to authorities, cavalcante sustained a bite from the dog and otherwise no one else was injured. dozens of police officers huddled around the now-captured cavalcante, taking a group photo with him. >> they're proud of their work. they kept the community safe. i say thanks to them, good job. >> reporter: there had been frustration, criticism from the public as this was stretching on. now that it's over, is this anything other than success? >> no, it's absolutely a success. i got to tell you, i think by and large the public stayed amazingly supportive. >> reporter: sarah brandow, the sister of the victim girlfriend, posting this on instagram, asking for privacy but saying, we are deeply grateful for the support and hard work put in by law enforcement. cavalcante expected to be arraigned on a felony escape charge and has already been transferred to a maximum security state prison. pennsylvania department of corrections has authority to

landmarks, but preservation often comes with a hefty price tag. no shortage of developers eager for something new. there are, however, those willing to fight for the past, even if it takes superhero strength. here's "nightline's" ashan singh. >> reporter: mark ruffalo. as a-list as it gets. >> that's my secret. >> reporter: known for his role as a smashing superhero on screen in the "avengers" movies. and his critically acclaimed performance in the 2016 academy award best picture film "spotlight." >> are you telling me that the catholic church removed legal documents from that courthouse? >> reporter: he's also no stranger to social activism. >> how come there's so many problems with frack drilling? >> reporter: lately, he's on a new mission. this one, literally it's close to home. he's hoping to save this

historic president bidhis tore historic presbyterian church from his neighborhood in new york. >> a lot of actors have a product line. but for me, this is what feels like i should be doing. >> reporter: ruffalo partnering with celebrities like matt damon to raise money for the west park presbyterian church on manhattan's upper west side. for over a century a home for worshippers. it's now in need of extensive repairs. >> it just has this incredible history. you could feel it when you're in here. a building like this carries the spirit and the culture of what has happened here over the history of its lifetime. >> reporter: in recent years, it's also been the home to the russian arts theater troupe. just uptown from the bright lights of broadway, it's small theaters like this that often give residents affordable access to the arts. >> this place is really a huge community for us. we're independent theater makers. >> reporter: built in 1889,

declared a historic landmark in 2010. like many old buildings, west park is in need of tens of millions of dollars of repairs. with their congregation membership in a freefall, money needed to restore it is hard to come by. >> the building needs work. it's like every other brownstone in the upper west side. 15% of the buildings have got scaffolding in front of them. that doesn't mean it's falling down. >> reporter: despite the landmark status, the building is in jeopardy after the congregation filed a hardship application with the landmark preservation commission of new york city, or lpc. if granted it will be sold to the developers. why is it important for you to stick your neck out for this place and fight this fight? >> i live around the corner. i was at 18 years old -- i needed a home like this. these places give kids direction, give them opportunities, boost the economy. this city runs on art. this is a breeding ground for young artists.

it's not just the historical value of the place, which is immensely important. it's also what it gives to the community. >> without the past, we don't have a guide to the future. we spend our lives in buildings. it is incumbent upon us, in my opinion, to maintain and retain those that have meaning to us. other otherwise, we're completely bereft. >> reporter: the controversy over whether to save iconic sites playing out across the nation. just days ago, the city of los angeles began the process to designate a brentwood home marilyn monroe overdosed and died in as a cultural monument. other historic community spaces facing the wrecking ball. bay area, circle star theater, frank sinatra and richard pryor performed there, was demolished. oklahoma city, iconic ed church, once a gathering point for

families following the 1995 bombing, destroyed last year after the city failed to make it a landmark. in philadelphia, the demolition of st. laurentiis roman catholic church built in 1882 began last year. west park church could face the same fate. >> after the building was landmarked, the membership of the church dropped precipitously. it had become far less about the church, more about issues related to the building itself. >> reporter: roger lee says now the financial burden could be as high as $50 million in repairs. it's the responsibility of the small congregation. >> there were grandiose commitments made on the part of elected officials about the amount of money that could be raised so that it would not fall exclusively on the shoulders of a small and struggling community. the money never materialized.

>> reporter: who should be responsible for maintaining these spaces once landmark status is granted? >> well, there are things the city could do to assist landmarks, particularly churches like west park. >> reporter: abc news reached out to the city and the lpc, and they said the hardship application is under review. but some experts believe the cost for repairs are less. >> you need to test every stone. they have not done that. it would be similar to going to the doctor because you've got a rash on your hand and the doctor saying, oh, i'm sorry, we're going to have to euthanize you. >> we had an unparalleled sense of authenticity in new orleans. and that is in large part because of our historic building stock. >> reporter: in some cities, preserving their history is in the fabric of their identity. >> we have 19 million people that come to experience our city every year because we are such a beautiful historic city. >> reporter: new orleans native actor wendell pierce, better mown for his work in the hbo
