tonight's community conversation. and a small protest happening right outside . >> about 100 people packed the niles discovery church in fremont wednesday. over 300 more were on zoom. the reason, a chance to talk with alameda county district attorney pamela price. >> i believe in reform. i don't believe in letting murderers out on close to no charges. so there has to be punishment before you can have reform. recall pamela price. >> patricia harris was one of those in attendance at a recall price rally ahead of the meeting, she told us she voted for the da but now regrets it. harris says after her son was killed, she believes price didn't prosecute his killer harshly enough. the person that did it was up on murder charges up until now. >> pamela price took office, reduced all the charges to involuntary, took all the enhancements away. >> as a father of town halls, the price is done. in the past, there were several heated moments. some people even got so frustrated that they stormed out of the event. what is there?

>> a former cop and former veterans? i'm a victim here. they're not being prosecuted. and in your head, one of those who left was laura koski, who says she thinks price avoided answering audience questions. >> i listened to her over and over again talking about how, you know, people in jail are so mistreated and we have to get them out. and we're over incarcerating and price, however, defended her record throughout the night. >> she spoke about the reforms she's brought to the da's office. she also hit back at claims she's soft on crime and says she believes the amount of guns in the community plays a large part in the violence. >> we are in a unique, crazy time where everybody in this community has a gun, and so we're not going to be able to lock our way up out of this situation. >> one particular point of contention was her view on charging enhancements, something many in the audience say they want to see more of, but something the da doesn't always agree with and an issue price campaigned on the use of those enhancements has driven the explosion of prisons has forced

marc benioff sat down with governor gavin newsom and the conversation got into some of the biggest issues facing our city. >> why can san francisco not be like this every single royal day? why does it take us having to say what is it? what can be what is that? >> the answer is yes. it can be like this. newsom's reaction was pretty political. >> he said, yes, it should be. and it's up to the locals to decide that they want san francisco to be this clean. all the time. and it's not an easy problem. it didn't happen overnight, and it won't be going away overnight. >> benioff also asking newsom about providing housing for the unhoused, and the governor said the courts and local cities need to take on some sort of accountability. >> and he's spending upwards of $7 billion and people just aren't seeing the results that they've been expecting. so that's why he's saying got to get on it, got to get on it locally, got to get it on a statewide level. and you've got to lay down the rules about

behavior as well as identify and go for solutions, whether benioff plans to bring dreamforce back to san francisco next year also came up. >> but he said he was not yet ready to commit our next building. a better bay area breakthrough tonight is in the form of about $15 million coming just in time. it's new money for the child care providers in santa clara county hit hard during the pandemic. we have been covering the nationwide child care crisis having an impact here locally on abc7 news at 11 as key federal pandemic funding is set to run out at the end of the month. abc7 news south bay reporter lauren martinez shows us who will benefit from this breakthrough. >> i'm receiving calls almost, almost every day. >> patricia moran has 14 kids enrolled in her home daycare center in san jose. every day she's getting calls from parents looking for childcare. in santa clara county, officials say more than 700 licensed child care facilities closed over the last

ten years. 161 shut down during the pandemic. on tuesday, the county and valley health foundation launched a $15 million grant program to boost child care. we are way past covid 19. >> they say. or are we? today, we still find ourselves in the midst of a very inequitable child care system. >> providers can apply for grants that will help renovate, reopen or expand existing operations. >> our chief children's officer , sarah duffy, noted that all applications must be in by mid november. so today, today is the moment to move on this. i've been told that we have already received 140 inquiries just this morning. >> the grants are available to child care providers who operate out of homes or commercial spaces. during the program announcement, one executive and one student shared their experien aces with child care. >> i remember telling my children every morning when i dropped them off somewhere and they'd ask me, who's picking them up? i would say, someone

who loves you, because sometimes i forgot literally who it was that day. that's exactly the system we have today. >> i had absolutely no idea where to start. i didn't know what to look up. i didn't know where to look. >> there's a high need for child care centers in gilroy and south san jose. the grant aims to increase the supply of available centers and improve this vital resource. >> in my case, it's going to help me a lot. i have carpets. i want to change it. my house is 100 years old, house. we support the community a lot because we are the ones who opens and weekends, night times. we have different skills shows. we provide that piece of mind in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. meantime the white house in congress are also taking action on child care. >> the white house today announced their support for a bill, a joint effort between the senate and house members if it ultimately passes. the bill would provide $16 billion in

the city now says it will take up to six weeks to repair everything while the broken pipe is fixed. there are all sorts of other problems that need to be dealt with after crews did an inspection there, they also need to replace sewer and gas pipelines. >> developing news. we are less than 24 hours away from the united auto workers officially going on strike and all signs are pointing toward a walkout. the contract expires at 11:59 p.m. eastern time tomorrow. and reports say the two sides remain far apart. the uaw is already plotting a strategy that would include strike out all three of detroit's big three automakers at the same time. as many as 146,000 workers could walk off their jobs as the big three can afford to immediately give us our fair share. >> if they choose not to, then they're choosing to strike themselves. and we are not afraid to take action. >> if we go on strike, it's not because we gave a great deal at

ford, because we gave a great we've given a great deal. ford we made our first offer almost two weeks ago to the uaw. we've made three offers since then, and we've had no genuine counteroffer on any of those sticking points include wages. >> and the union is pushing for the elimination of the tiered pay and benefit system. california state university system's board of trustees voted today to raise the cost of tuition. all 23 csu schools will now get a 6% raise in tuition each of the next five years. this means tuition will go up by $342 a year next year and up by $2,000 by 2028. >> i'm. it's going to affect us in the most negative way possible. i'm already in immense debt for what the csu costs right now. >> trustees believe this will save faculty and staff positions and avoid more courses being cut from the institutions. there's only been one other tuition increase in the past 12 years. >> california is making good on

its promise to expand internet access in low income communities . earlier this year, the state said it had to scale down its multi-billion dollar broadband expansion plan in areas where more californians live below the poverty line. it's added inflation and construction costs . at the time, areas with some of the lowest rates of high speed internet like east oakland, were slated to lose out the most. the state was not planning to scale back the expansion in wealthier communities. now, governor newsom plans to divert some funds from the 2024 budget to bring access to those underserved areas. after all, how to catch a murderer. >> the details of how the pennsylvania escapee avoided capture for so long and the police dog that ultimately brought him down. >> president biden's plan to crush cancer. how nasa is now getting involved to help hit that ambitious goal. some serious star power dream forces dream fest event. >> tonight, the familiar faces at chase center, including one at chase center, including one person who really (smelling) ew. gotta get rid of this. ♪tell me why♪

outside of the front doors. >> huge sigh of relief, but he's on edge, reporting everything that they hear from leaves rustling to dogs barking, which is a normal occurrence. but we don't know. >> cavalcanti is now back in prison. the attorney general says he will be facing additional charges related to that escape. >> new developments. the so called dreamer immigration program is again in jeopardy after a texas federal judge ruled daca illegal. the legal issue centers around the fact daca was created via executive action by president obama. the biden administration is now trying to preserve the program which protects undocumented immigrants who were brought to the us as children. today's order doesn't immediately end the program or change the status of current recipients. but new applications are on hold. experts predict an appeal of the ruling will go to the supreme court. the third time a daca case would be before the justices. >> president joe biden met with his team of cancer experts to refocus the country's efforts to end the disease. biden hopes to

cut american cancer deaths in half in the next 25 years or sooner. it's a cause that's personal for biden. his eldest son died of cancer in 2015. >> well, last year, joe and i reignited the cancer moonshot and cancer as we know it and even cure some cancers in the process. >> today, the president announced a $250 million grant for cancer research and innovation projects and new programs designed to expand access to cancer care in underserved communities. plus, nasa will be using its work in radiation and supercomputing to help in the efforts against cancer. >> utah senator mitt romney won't be running for reelection next year, saying it's time for the next generation to step up. >> not just having a bunch of guys that were around the baby boomers who were around in the post war era. we're not the right ones to be making the decisions for tomorrow. >> the 76 year old republican says he doesn't want to still be

in office in his 80s a bit of a poke at donald trump and joe biden and perhaps some of the older high ranking politicians such as nancy pelosi and mitch mcconnell. earlier, i asked abc7 news insider phil matier what he made of senator romney's comments. comments ten senators are over the age of 75. >> 50 are over the age of 65. so he has a point. half the us senate collecting social security if they wanted to. the bottom line is that the us senate and the house of representatives that he's referring to is built on a system of seniority. >> last week, representative nancy pelosi said she will seek reelection for her us house seat here in san francisco. the former house speaker is currently 87 years old. >> former san jose mayor sam liccardo has announced his next move. he'll be joining the san francisco based firm ground floor public affairs. he's taking on the role of senior advisor and counsel for california civic initiatives. liccardo tells our media partners the mercury news he hopes to continue efforts on issues he's passionate about, things like expanding housing, eliminating food insecurity and

the forecast right now and what's coming for thursday. >> abc7 news meteorologist andy patel is here. sandhya. yeah, it's going to be nice weather, but it is going to be changing. >> so julian and omar, let's take a look at some live pictures right now from our tower cameras. and you will notice that all four have one thing in common and that's the fog. so that's how you're going to start off your morning half mile visibility right now in half moon bay. it has been about a quarter mile. so watch out. the fog has been heavy near the coast and you can see it here on live doppler seven. we're going to widen the picture here. today's high temperatures were in the low 60s to mid 90s with this ridge of high pressure nudging in just enough, a northerly wind allowed us to warm up that high pressure ridge will still dominate tomorrow, but it's going to shift off and it's going to be replaced by an area of low pressure this weekend. it's going to park itself right off the coast and that's going to mean cooler than average temperatures here in the bay area for us right now, 59 degrees for the ocean temperature. and that wind is coming off the ocean. it is

breezy one with low 60s. all right. still tracking a weakening hurricane lee it is a category two in the atlantic. it expected to bring tropical storm conditions to bermuda in the next couple of hours, but passing well to the east of bermuda. as you take a look here and we take you right on through the weekend. and this storm is expected to make landfall possibly as a tropical storm as we head towards the new england area on sunday. and the concerns here are not just the wind, the waves, heavy rain and storm surge as well. they do have tropical storm watches and hurricane watches up for that area as you take a look at the accuweather seven day forecast, temperatures will be in the low 60s to low 90s tomorrow. cooling trend for your friday really carries you right on through the weekend still below average for monday before those temperatures bounce back by the middle of the bounce back by the middle of the week. i'm and dan will be i'm febreze! your bathroom... needs febreze small spaces...
