is america this morning. >> good thursday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning to you. i'm rhiannon ally. we want to begin with new details about the capture of a convicted killer who was on the run for nearly two weeks after escaping from a pennsylvania prison overnight. >> we learned how he was able to evade police for so long and just how close they came. on multiple occasions to catching him. this morning, the convicted murderer who escaped a pennsylvania prison is filling in the blanks, revealing how he avoided capture for two weeks. surviving on watermelon and drinking water from a stream while burying his bodily waste in the woods to avoid detection . >> the subject is in custody, confirmed subject is in custody. authorities say danilo cavalcante admitted during four hours of questioning that law enforcement got so close, officers almost stepped on him three times during the manhunt. >> he said on multiple occasions, law enforcement officers almost stepped to him. we were only 5 or 6ft away, and cavalcante revealing how he got that clean shaven look thanks to

a backpack he stole. he described that the backpack he had obtained a razor in it, and that's how he got clean shaven. >> cavalcante telling authorities his end game was to carjack someone and get to canada using a rifle he stole from a homeowner days earlier. cavalcante escaped two philadelphia area prison on august 31st, days after a jury convicted him of killing his ex girlfriend. the exhaustive search through rural areas finally came to an end yesterday , 30 miles from the prison. after cavalcante was detected by a plane with a thermal imaging camera around 1 a.m. due to the weather search crews decided to follow him and move in after sunrise. >> they were able to move in very quietly. they had the element of surprise. >> police say cavalcante tried to get away as officers moved in, crawling under thick underbrush with his loaded rifle . but the customs and border control team released a canine named yoda to capture him. >> the dogs subdued him and team members from both of those teams immediately moved in. >> the four year old belgian malinois leaving a visible bite mark on cavalcanti's scalp.

meanwhile, for the first time in days, schools and businesses in the area will be reopened today as local residents breathe a sigh of relief. >> where they found his shoes at our neighbor's house up there. i'm happy that it's over. we weren't sure how it was going to end up. cavalcante said. >> he got the watermelon that he ate from a local farm. the district attorney, meanwhile, will now decide whether he'll face additional charges related to this escape. meanwhile, there's a manhunt still going on. a murder suspect in washington, d.c. has been on the run since last wednesday. christopher haynes escaped from custody while being treated at a d.c. hospital. a $30,000 reward is offered in that search. >> well, the clock is ticking down to a massive strike that could be unlike anything we've ever seen. the united auto workers union, which represents nearly 150,000 workers, is demanding better pay and benefits. the deadline is tonight. abc's justin finch is here now with new details. justin >> good morning, brianna and good morning. all eyes on detroit, where the big three automakers are braced for that

strike and a potential economic ripple effect that could include billions of dollars in losses. this morning, what could be the calm before an historic simultaneous strike on the big three automakers? >> if called upon, we will be ready to do whatever it takes. >> ford, general motors and stellantis, the manufacturer behind chrysler and jeep, all trying to prevent up to 150,000 auto workers from walking off the job effective midnight thursday. the union outlining plans to strike an individual us auto plants at first, but also saying an all out strike is still a possibility. >> we're keeping all of our options open. >> united auto workers president shawn fain address guessing the rank and file, saying the union is making some headway in talks but isn't budging on key demands, including a 40% wage increase over the next four years, arguing that so much the

ceos have gotten since the last contract, the most recent sec filings show all of the big three ceos earn more than $20 million. last year, with gm ceo mary barra topping the list at 29 million, roughly 362 times the average gm workers pay the uaw also wants pension plans resurrect after they were eliminated for new hires during the financial crisis. retiree health care and a four day work week which ford ceo jim farley calls impractical. >> we can't have a sustainable industry working four days a week. >> auto industry analysts warning a strike could hit consumers hard. >> however it ends will almost assuredly result in yet higher prices for cars, both sides now watching the clock for gm and stellantis releasing statements saying their remaining optimal mystic about talks. >> ford and gm noting their latest offers to the uaw include

more paid time off and significant wage increases, though just nearly half of the 40% pay hike that the union wants. andrew tough negotiations sides seem far apart. >> justin thank you. a federal judge has struck down some of the emergency gun restrictions issued by new mexico's governor last week. the governor's temporary order suspended the open and concealed, carrying of guns in the albuquerque area after shootings that killed two children. but the judge has now blocked that order on second amendment grounds until a court hearing next month. >> we turn now to the cruise ship that is stranded in the north atlantic in frigid arctic weather. the race is on to reach the ship with one hundreds on board this morning. passengers on a luxury cruise ship that ran aground will be stuck for at least one more day. the ocean explorer with 206 people on board, including several americans, set out from norway september 1st, heading to the arctic circle at more than

$20,000 per passenger for the cruise promises. views of the northern lights and stunning glaciers. its website highlights the ship's cutting edge technology and navigation capabilities. but the ship ran aground on monday in the sand and mud of a remote national park in greenland. passengers say the crew lowered the lifeboats and the anchor to try to lighten its load. but attempts by a large fishing boat to free the ship were unsuccessful. all inspections show the hull is intact. no injuries reported. and the closest rescue ship from the danish navy is expected to arrive tomorrow. but officials say the conditions need to be just right for the ship to be freed. in the meantime, the cruise operator reports some people on the ship have covid international aid is beginning to arrive in libya, where at least 6000 people have died in devastating floods. >> officials say one quarter of the hardest hit city disappeared appeared when a wall of water followed heavy rain and two dam failures. thousands of people

are still unaccounted for. >> some revealing comments this morning from the chairman of the joint chiefs during an interview with abc's martha raddatz, general mark milley spoke about his regrets after the chaotic us withdrawal from afghanistan, even as he prepares to retire, milley acknowledged that the evacuation of us embassy staff and others should have taken place earlier. he says in a broader sense, america's longest war was lost. >> it didn't end the way any of us wanted it. look at when the enemy is occupying your capital that or the capital of the country that you supported. and that's a strategic setback, a strategic failure. every single soldier i lost is a is a regret. i want everyone who ever wore the uniform over there to hold their head high because they did what their nation asked. and we protect. did the united states for 20 consecutive years from attack from afghanistan and we gave the afghan people hope for a better life, and they should

dangles. another employee rushes in. >> you could have bear hugged him. you could have let another teacher do it. i don't know what was going on in that man's head, but my son did not deserve that. >> braylon's parents say they were told later that day that something had happened, but they didn't know he had been hit until they requested the video. >> besides, i'm still a kid. that's nonverbal. you don't get a response. so we wouldn't know. we wouldn't have a clue what was going on through our kid. the family is calling for the teacher's aide who has since been fired to face charges. >> the school superintendent says the district will be taking additional measures to make sure all employees are properly trained and qualified for their positions in an effort to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. >> our kids need help. society needs to be educated on autism, and they need to be trained to deal with these kids. police investigated and now local prosecutors are reportedly considering possible charges. >> rhiannon andrew so, andrea, disturbing video there. >> thank you. new details this morning about casinos being
