we are starting here with our live golden gate bridge camera right now where we have just a few cars on there at the moment. and there you see the truck riding by. our busiest stretch at the moment is going to be in emeryville showing you 80 here. those headlights are traveling in the westbound direction towards the maze. we have no advisories or blocking issues at this time coming in from the chp. so we will end here with the drive times, tracy to dublin . for our super commuters, a minor slowdown at 33 minutes. >> thank you, jobina. governor newsom is doubling down on calls for san francisco to find a permanent solution for homelessness and drug use and crime. he sat down with salesforce ceo marc benioff at dreamforce yesterday, saying elected officials must do more. the two discuss the challenges, possible solutions and how the city seemingly cleaned up the streets for more than 40,000 people attending dreamforce this week. >> why can san francisco not be like this every single whole day? why does it take us having to say what is it? what what is that? >> the answer is yes. s it can

be like this. the governor is taking action to stop organized retail theft theft across the state, committing hundreds of millions of dollars to 55 cities and counties in including some right here in the bay area. >> abc7 news reporter lena howland is live in san francisco with how all that money is going to be used. lena hey, reggie, good morning to you. >> with issues like homelessness and crime, a big concern for organizers here at dreamforce, the state of california announced a $267 million investment going to law enforcement agencies and district attorney's offices across the state. and we now know some of that money is coming to the bay area. it's being spread out to 55 communities statewide in the bay area. that includes places like alameda county, san francisco county and san jose. just to name a few. 41 sheriffs and police departments will be awarded up to $24 million each. that would help create retail

theft, investigative units, train loss prevention officers and install advanced surveillance technology. san francisco police say they're on board. >> would love to have these resources to help hire officers to help combat the issue of organized retail theft. >> 13 district attorney's offices across the state could also get up to $2 million each. and if approved by the board of state and community corrections, these 55 different communities could see this money as early as october first of this year. live in san francisco, lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you, lena. developing news on what could be an unprecedented strike for thousands of auto workers. a midnight deadline is looming. workers say they are ready to walk off the job if their demands are not met. and jobina this possible strike could have an impact across the entire country. yes, admati. >> so if this strike happens, it would be the first time the united auto workers 80 year

history that workers would be striking at the three major automakers at the same time. so that's ford, general motors, general motors and stellantis, which is the company that makes chrysler and jeep vehicles members are calling for a 40% wage increase, a return to traditional pensions and a four day work week. a strike would have implications for the entire us economy, with economists saying it would likely cause car prices to increase the union and automakers have been negotiating for months now and it appears to be far from an agreement. >> an all out strike is still a possibility. we're keeping all of our options open for president and ceo says they put out a new offer and are optimistic. >> but also saying some of the union's demands, like a four day workweek, are not sustainable. if this strike does happen, the uaw has a plan that includes

beginning at a specific set of plans and expanding if negotiation don't make progress, that deadline for a deal is 1159. tonight, gmac. >> thank you, jobina. teachers in the sausalito marin city school district are poised to walk off the job. two members of the teachers association there voted unanimously to authorize a strike, which gives union leaders the power to set a potential strike date. this is coming after a state appointed mediator failed to resolve the dispute between the union and the district over a wage increase. as teachers in two bay area school districts are taking action to demand higher wages in lafayette. union members staged an informational picket before school hours yesterday. the teachers say they've been in contract negotiations since march, declining the district's final offer of a 12% raise. we're not retaining our qualified teachers and we're not attracting new teachers because our salary schedule isn't competitive with those in the in

the in orinda, in moraga and in neighboring communities. >> if you look at the poverty level for contra costa county, a single teacher is making under that the district issued a statement calling its offer of a 12% raise, highly competitive for the region, saying it's looking forward to ongoing talks. >> calif fornia is making good on its promise to expand internet access in low income communities. >> earlier this year, the state said it had to scale down its multi-billion dollar broadband expansion plan in areas where more californians live below the poverty line. it cited inflation and construction costs at the time. areas with some of the lowest rates of high-speed internet like east oakland were slated to lose out most. but the state was not planning to scale back the expansion in wealthier communities. now the governor plans to divert some funds from the 2024 budget to bring access to those underserved areas. after all, tuition is going up

for students in the california state university system. >> the trustees voted yesterday on an increase of 6% every year for the next five years. so that means tuition is going up by $342 a year. next year and then up by $2,000 by 2028. >> i'm. it's going to affect us in the most negative way possible. i'm already in immense debt for what the csu costs right now. >> trustees believe that this will be saving faculty and staff positions and avoiding more courses being cut from the institution's six weeks. >> that's how long the city of san francisco says it'll take to completely repair a cow hollow intersection where a big sinkhole opened up this week after a water main break caused a flood. the hole opened up late sunday at the intersection of fillmore and green street. it's while the broken pipe is fixed. there are all sorts of other problems that need to be dealt with after crews did an inspection, they also need to replace sewer and gas pipeline

signs. >> an update this morning about a beach sailboat. we first told you about a week ago. well, the ship is now gone. it was stranded at stinson beach near the beach yesterday. the marin county sheriff's office tore it up. it happened after the end of a temporary restraining order issued by a federal judge giving the boat's owner time to remove it. now, the boat's owner, logan walker, lives on the boat and says he was sleeping with the boat on autopilot when it crashed on upton beach, which is just north of stinson beach in late july. >> 5:09 a.m. looking at our air quality, we have fresh air. we are continuing that gorgeous trend of beautiful air quality today. and through the upcoming weekend, even early next week. we are not anticipating any problems with our aqi have an issue with dense fog in the north bay santa rosa. we're watching very closely. you're down to about a mile visibility there. so in the valleys of sonoma county, we do have a bit of a thick fog issue. not too bad along the coast. we're at four miles there. but as you move away from the coast, we're doing a lot better. you can

clearly see the marine layer over the city right now. a lot of us are seeing that cloud cover first thing this morning and we are seeing pockets of drizzle underneath that marine layer. here's how the day shapes up. mix of sun and clouds with that marine layer. first thing, we'll find brighter conditions as the day goes on. not as warm as we were yesterday, maybe 1 to 3 degrees cooler, but still, all in all, it's pretty seasonal, mild to warm conditions in the 70s and 80s by about 4 p.m. 79, in vallejo and napa, 84. in santa rosa it is hot in lakeport, ukiah, uk going to 99 today, 82. in san jose, 73. in oakland. the city not as bright as yesterday. it's more partly sunny. temperatures around 68 degrees at about 75. in palo alto. now, the three day forecast, we are going to begin a cooling trend starting tomorrow. and that cooling trend is going to continue for the weekend and for and for a huge chunk of the seven day forecast. we'll talk about those temperatures. a close look at the entire weekend. reggie in about nine minutes. >> all right. thanks drew. move over, pickleball. i guess there's a new sport fad taking over and the plans to build a

way the program was created through an executive order signed by then-president obama. yesterday's ruling, though, doesn't immediately end the program. but new applications have been put on hold, and the biden administration is expected to appeal the ruling. it could take that fight all the way to the supreme court. a panel of judges has overturned california's ban on some gun ads. the san francisco based ninth circuit court of appeals handed down the ruling. a coalition of gun rights groups and shooting clubs sued attorney general rob bonta, claiming california's ban on ads that

might be of interest to minors violated constitutional free speech protections. and the judges agreed. the attorney general's office hasn't responded to a request for comment. >> governor newsom is now promising to intervene if a federal court case ends up blocking san francisco from clearing encampments. newsom believes the judge has gone too far here and is preventing the state from solving a critical issue. he reiterated this at the dreamforce conference. the case could prevent unhoused people from being moved from their encampments until more shelter beds are made available. sf city leaders say the decision makes it clear, makes clearing streets nearly impossible. and they claim people are often refusing shelter even when it's available . well, it was a special night at chase center last night as part of dreamforce. abc7 news was there for the concert benefiting ucsf benioff children's hospital. featuring foo fighters as the headliner. beforehand the warriors andre iguodala and actor matthew mcconaughey took the stage to present an award to ucsf patient

. selah kitchener received a life saving liver transplant just weeks after her father died from cancer. and now her aim is to become a doctor. tonight means the world to me. >> i think it definitely shows us kind of how everything can come full circle and how everything really is meant to be in life. just because, you know, going through my transplant and the passing of my dad. but everything kind of starting with ucsf and kind of bringing everything back. and when he had a vision, the concerts over the years have raised more than $100 million for the hospitals. >> bart's ridership numbers have marked a new milestone, and it's a good one. the transit agency recorded its highest ridership day on tuesday since the start of the pandemic, with more than 192,000 riders. and that number surpassed the previous record of 190,000 rides during the warriors 2022 championship parade, which was in june of last year. now last month, the average weekday ridership was more than 166,000 commuters. but

that's still just 40% of pre-pandemic levels. >> we're learning more about the food hall set to open in the same space as san francisco's new ikea. a bakery by klausmeyer is the first business to be announced as part of the scandinavian food court. meyer is known for co-founding a copenhagen restaurant that's been named the world's best restaurant multiple times, according to the chronicle. the market street food hall will have five food stands and three bars, and it is supposed to open next year. >> yes. and san francisco's famed cliff house is soon going to be back in business with three new restaurants. the golden gate national recreation area announced a new lease with the company that operates restaurants in san francisco and in los angeles. the plan is to reopen the dining room. plus, a new cafe in the former retail space and a restaurant in the lookout space. you remember cliff house closed at the end of 2020. it had been in business for 157 years, and people have been waiting to see what is going to be there because it's such a beautiful space. it's really iconic and i'm happy we

over pickleball and the fight for space, but now there might be another sports competitor or the first paddle courts are coming to san francisco. construction in embarcadero plaza, embarcadero plaza starts next week and the courts are set to open in october. so paddle is a racket sport that people describe as kind of a hybrid between tennis and squash and that's seen a rise in popularity recently. these will be the first courts to open in northern california for soccer referee natalie simon will become the first black woman to ref an mls match this weekend. >> simon will take on saturday's game between the san jose earthquakes and real salt lake. she is served as fourth official for several mls games this season. it's hard for me to say for some reason, simon is already the first black woman to earn a fifa badge, the highest honor for a referee. she's also of native american heritage in the east bay, the oakland roots and soul soccer club opening up the chance for you to be able to say that you own a piece of a

all of the emotions, but deeply touched and humbled by the support and love. the night is darkest before the dawn and i shall rise yet again. it comes as the blame game surrounding his injury begins with rodgers having been the oldest active player in the nfl. many cite the 39 year old's age as a factor. >> why are we surprised that older quarterbacks get hurt? but the injury is reigniting a debate about the field itself, many claiming rodgers may not have torn his achilles. >> if the jets metlife stadium used grass instead of artificial turf, some of the game's biggest stars weighing in on the numbers say the grass is healthier for the players. >> and so i want to play on the best surface that will keep me healthy. >> studies have come out how much safer a grass fields are. so i think that's that's important. the nfl players association is now calling on the league to switch all fields to grass, citing studies that show more non-contact injuries happen on turf than on grass. >> but nfl commissioner roger goodell defending artificial turf. >> you also have other players who like playing on a turf field

the bay area. >> good morning, everybody. it's thursday, september 14th. >> let's see what the weather has to store. hi, drew. >> hi. good morning, guys. we are just in store for another pleasant afternoon. it's the pattern we've been in for the past couple of days. and what we'll find is that temperatures are really seasonal this time of the year outside. this is the tam cam. you can see that marine layer bouncing off the city lights this morning. good air quality as we head towards the next 72 hours. temperatures right now, we're starting out in the low 50s to the low 60s, depending on where you live. so you might need that light layer first thing, keep it on until about 9:10 a.m. before we see that total sunshine really come out and we start to warm up. here's future weather. clearly, you can see that marine layer there, that gray shading you see on your screen. it's with us around the bay shoreline breaks down in traditional fashion, pulls back to the coastline, temperatures one or 2 or 3 degrees cooler compared to yesterday. but this is pretty average for this time of the year. so bright 73 in oakland today, 82. in san jose hit about 84. in santa rosa in the city, maybe not as bright as we were yesterday. we call it partly

sunny out there with our marine layer high of 68 degrees. that is weather let's we do on the road this morning jobina. good morning. >> good morning, drew. thank you. hi, everyone. so we are going to the bay bridge because this backup is really beginning to extend all the way to the bay bridge toll plaza now due to a motorcycle crash on westbound 80 past treasure island. the speeds are down to around 14mph. now, if you're traveling westbound on the bridge into san francisco, we also have a new report of a crash in oakland southbound 880 right around 23rd, which is why i'm bringing you our 880 at the coliseum camera. it is out of view of this camera, but heads up, if you rely on a 80 for your commute through oakland and then we'll end here with walnut creek showing you 680 where things are at the limit here. thanks jobina. >> scenes like these becoming all too common. retail theft from smash and grabs to mass organized theft is happening all across the state. and now we're learning more about governor newsom's plan to stop crime by investing hundreds of millions of dollars in dozens of cities and counties. abc7 news reporter lena howland live in san

francisco with how the money could help here in the bay. >> well, here at dreamforce yesterday governor newsom talked all things public safety and crime prevention at the same time, his office announced the largest single investment to combat organized retail theft in golden state history. now, as part of the governor's real public safety plan, newsom plans to send $267 million to both law enforcement agencies and district attorney's offices in 55 communities across the state in the bay area. we now know that includes places like san mateo county, santa clara county. daly city, san francisco county, santa rosa, sonoma county and alameda county, just to name a few. two in san mateo county, thieves hit this sephora recently and stole $3,500 worth of perfume thieves also hit this lego store and stole just as much in lagos. police did make arrests in both cases. san mateo county supervisor david canepa

says he welcomes the grant money slated for his sheriff's department, but he thinks more changes are needed, especially with current legislation. >> we have to look at these penalties and the penalties that we have in place aren't working when it comes to retail theft and organized crime. that has to be revised. and we have to look at prosecuting at a higher level than is currently being prosecuted at. >> that's why 13 district attorney's offices across the state could also get a little more than $2 million each in the bay area. that include alameda county, santa clara and san francisco. if approved by the board of state and community corrections, these 55 communities could see this money as early as october first of this year. live in san francisco, lena howland, abc seven news. thanks so much, lena. >> a heated town hall meeting in

the east bay last night where the alameda county district attorney, pamela price, hosted her latest talk with some neighbors. price has been doing these town halls in several communities over the summer. abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez is in the newsroom with why some of price's policies are really dividing the community. >> good morning, reggie. there have been many heated moments in the town halls that price has done and last night was no exception with some even storming out of the event. alameda county district attorney pamela price's town hall meeting drawing about 100 people to the niles discovery church in fremont on wednesday. more than 300 people joined on zoom, and there was a recall rally before the meeting. her opponents, who believe she is too soft on crime , are spearheading a recall effort. some last night believe she avoided answering audience questions, but she defended her record since taking office and talked about reform that she she's brought to the da's office . she also hit back at claims that she's not tough on crime and says she believes the amount of guns in the community plays a

large part in the violence. one particular point of contention was her view on charging enhanced warrants, something many in the audience say that they want to see more of. but something the da does not always agree with and an issue that price campaigned on the use of those enhancements has driven the explosion of prisons has forced us to invest in prisons versus education. >> i believe in reform. i don't believe in letting murderers out on close to no charges. so there has to be punishment before you can have reform. patricia harris's son was killed and she believes that price did not prosecute his killer harshly enough, saying the killer's charges were reduced to involuntary with enhancements taken away and price remains committed to her platform of criminal justice reform. >> she says a crime wave started before she took office. live in the newsroom, gloria rodriguez,

pittsburg officer in court yesterday. none entered a plea. instead, they waived their rights to a speedy trial. court documents show between 2020 and 2021, antioch officer timothy manley williams allegedly tried to help clear a speeding ticket and prevent officer andrea rodriguez from appearing in court in exchange for a bottle of tequila. officer manley williams is also one of the ten officers indicted back in august in the fbi's ongoing investigation into the antioch and pittsburg police departments . abc7 news spoke with one community activist who's been regularly attending court hearings surrounding these cases . >> as i seen the look on some of their faces, they look like they're ashamed and they look like they didn't want to be there. of course, and i feel like it's just it's time. it's time for this change to happen and this needs to happen. they need to have their day in court . >> officer manley williams, his attorney and several other officers and their attorneys declined to comment.

>> a vallejo police department whistleblower has settled a lawsuit with the city for close to $1 million. abc7 news i-team reporter melanie woodrow has covered the story for close to three years and talk with that officer for a one on one interview. >> after being fired from the vallejo police department. former captain john whitney says he now feels some vindication and a lot of emotions. >> i'm sorry. i just. whitney and his attorney, jamie walker of william ivory, say tuesday night, the city council voted to approve a nearly $1 million settlement to whitney's whistleblower lawsuit. >> whitney says he was fired for reporting unethical and corrupt behavior within the vallejo police department, including badge bending officers, had been bending down the corners of their badges following shootings. >> i have received awards for lifetime achievement from the peace officer standards and training, and i was ready for the next step in my career. and they took all of that away from me. >> walker says the settlement sends a clear message. vallejo fired a whistleblower. >> when you don't pay nearly $1

million, when you did the right thing. >> at issue has been the intention behind badge bending, which i discussed with both sides last year. >> these officers were celebrating in a gang like ritualistic fashion. the murder and death of black and brown people in the city of vallejo. >> the officers had to confront a lethal force incident, and it was a way of acknowledging that the solano county district attorney refused to investigate exclusively, telling me in february of last year, we don't we don't chase rumors. >> we don't chase rumors. the vallejo police department launched and concluded an independent third party investigation. >> but the findings have never been publicly released. >> i think the community has a right to know what was going on inside their police department. >> the vallejo city manager said monday in a statement. the city is prohibited from releasing the report because it is a peace officer personnel record. but even the officers implicated have called for the report to be released. according to their attorney, mike raines, by email. raines told me the city should be ashamed of itself for not releasing the investigation and correcting the false narrative

district attorney fani willis wants all 19 defendants, including donald trump, to be tried together starting october 23rd. a judge set that date for co-defendants, kenneth cheesebrough and sidney powell after they requested a speedy trial. but trump's legal team is demanding more time to prepare for the wide ranging charges. prosecutors have estimated a trial for all 19 co-defendants would last four months and feature 150 witnesses. >> republican congresswoman lauren excuse me, lauren boebert was escorted out of a showing of beetlejuice juice, the musical, after allegedly causing a disturbance. the incident was caught on surveillance video inside the denver theater. officials say there were several reports about two people vaping and taking photos and being loudly disruptive. according to the incident, boebert made a statement such as do you know who i am? and i will be contacting the mayor to as she was leaving her campaign manager has disputed the alleged behavior cited by the venue.
