characters of this year's biggest movie, y barbies sidekick, may no longer be just a ken. >> good morning on this thursday , september 14th. yeah, a lot to get to. >> we're going to start the check of our forecast with drew. >> yeah, good morning. we're in store for a very pleasant afternoon out there right now. temperatures are starting out in the mid 50s to the low 60s. as you get outside. this is the mount tam camera. and what you're looking at is all that fog down below kind of bouncing off the city light. so our marine layer is with us this morning. there are areas of drizzle close to the coast. so we'll have that blend of sun and clouds early on. we'll have that cloud cover pulling back to the coast as the morning goes on. it's a bright afternoon. maybe 1 to 3 degrees cooler than yesterday. but all in all, we are in store for a mild to warm afternoon mid 70s around the bay shoreline. low 80s and i should say upper 80s in our warmest spots inland. but a cooling trend is going to get underway here as we head into the weekend. so don't get used to those numbers. we'll talk all about the changes coming our way

in just a few minutes. but let's check in with jobina and see how we're doing with traffic on this thursday. thank you, drew. >> good morning, everyone. so we're going back to the bay bridge. this is where our mess is this morning. a motorcycle crash on westbound 80 past treasure island. it is in the process of clearing. so you're seeing the speeds come up according to the chp, a ten year old was on this motorcycle when it crashed this morning. this is a live look as you approach the tunnel here on the bay bridge. this is on the eastern span, i should say, in the upper deck there. so the problem here is that it flipped metering lights on early and now the backup has stretched well into the maze much earlier than usual. we still have two lanes blocked there. so those metering lights flipped on at 533. thankfully, no injuries involved and we'll let you know when it clears. >> thanks for being a governor. newsom is doubling down on calls for san francisco to find a permanent solution for homelessness and drug use and crime. he sat down with salesforce ceo marc benioff at dreamforce yesterday saying that elected officials have to do more. the two discuss the challenges, possible solutions and how the city seemingly

cleaned up the streets for the more than 40,000 people here for dreamforce this week. >> why can san francisco so not be like this every single day? why does it take us having to say what is it? what what is that what the answer is? >> yes. it can be like this. >> the governor is taking action to stop organized retail theft across the state, committing hundreds of millions of dollars to 55 cities and counties, including some right here in the bay area. abc7 news reporter lena howland is live in san francisco with how all that money is going to be used. lena hey, reggie. >> the state of california will soon be sending $267 million to law enforcement agencies and district attorney's offices across the state. and we now know some of that money is coming right here to the bay area. if you take a look at your screen right now, here's a look at some of the places we're seeing in the bay area on that list that includes san mateo

county, santa clara county, san francisco county, sonoma county and alameda county, just to name a few. as part of the governor's real public safety plan, 41 sheriffs and police department s will be awarded up to $24 million each. that would help create retail theft, investigative units, train loss prevention officers and install advanced surveillance technology. in san francisco. that means funding for blitz operations and crackdowns on crime and the selling of stolen goods. san francisco police say they're on board would love to have these resources to help hire more officers to help combat the issue of organized retail theft. attorney's offices across the state could also get a little more than $2 million each. that money is geared toward creating new teams dedicated to prosecuting organized retail theft and to establishing countywide de facto intelligence centers to serve as prosecution hubs for all related investigations within a county.

now, if approved by the board of state community corrections, these 55 different communities could see this money as early as october first of this year. live in san francisco, lena howland, abc seven news. >> lena, thank you. governor newsom is promising to intervene in the court case blocking san francisco from clearing encampments. during an interview with politico. the governor said the state would file an amicus brief with the court. that's a way for him to weigh in on the case in the courts, even though he is not directly involved. newsom also said he hopes the case goes all the way to the supreme court. this stems from a lawsuit filed by advocates trying to prevent san francisco officials from clearing encampments unless there are enough shelter beds for every unhoused person. >> developing news and what could be an unprecedented strike for thousands of auto workers. a midnight deadline is looming and workers say they are ready to walk off the job if their demands are not met. jobina this possible strike could have an impact across the country. >> yes. coomassie if this strike happens, it would be the first

time in the united auto workers 80 year history that workers would be striking at three major automakers. all at the same time. so that's ford general motors and stellantis, the company that makes chrysler and jeep vehicles. members are calling for a 40% wage increase, a return to traditional pensions and a four day workweek. a strike would have implications for the entire us economy, with economists saying it would likely cause car prices to increase the union and automakers have been negotiating for months and appear to be far apart on an agreement. >> an all out strike is still a possibility. we're keeping all of our options open. >> ford's president and ceo says they put out a new offer and are, quote, optimistic, but also say some of the union's demands, like a four day workweek, are not sustainable. well, if this strike does happen, the uaw has a plan that includes beginning at a specific site of plants and then expanding if negotiations

don't make progress from there. that deadline for a new deal is 1159 tonight, reggie, thanks, jobina. >> teachers in the sausalito marin city school district are poised to walk off the job. members of the teachers association voted unanimously to authorize a strike, which gives union leaders the power to set a potential strike date. it comes after a state appointed mediator failed to resolve the dispute between the union and the district over a wage increase. >> teachers in two bay area school districts are taking action and demanding higher wages. and lafayette union members staged an informal informational picket, i should say, before school hours yesterday. the teachers say they've been in contract negotiations since march, declining the district's final offer of a 12% raise. >> we're not retaining our qualified teachers and we're not attracting new teachers because our salary schedule isn't competitive with those in the in the in orinda in moraga and in neighboring communities. if you

look at the poverty level, for contra costa county, a single teacher is making under that the district issued a statement calling its offer of a 12% raise highly competitive for the region and saying it looks forward to ongoing talks. >> fallout from a controversial decision this week by the sunol glen school board to ban all flags except for the american flag and the california flag from school campuses yesterday. some parents reportedly kept their kids home from school. parents tell our media partners at the east bay times they were concerned about the safety of their kids and possible hostility. after the meeting. they're now considering a recall against the board members who voted in favor of that ban. the meeting on tuesday was closed to the public after parents, board members and the superintendent got into multiple arguments. >> coming up. expect to pay more to attend college at cal state university schools. the increased tuition worth hundreds of dollars and a doordash driver

of power lines to cut the wildfire risk. but according to the chronicle and a hearing yesterday, the california public utilities commission made some other suggestions. it proposed bearing less than 1000 miles of power lines and instead insulating wires in risky areas . it's not clear how that might impact customer bills, but overall, state regulators say it could save billions of dollars. a vote is set for november. the tuition is going up for students in california state university system. the university trustees voted yesterday on an increase of 6% each year for the next five years. that means that tuition will go up by $342 a year next year, and by $2,000 by 2028. >> i'm. it's going to affect us in the most negative way possible. i'm already in immense debt for what the csu costs right now. >> trustees believe this will save faculty and staff positions and avoid more courses being cut from institutions. six weeks.

that's how long the city of san francisco says it's going to take to completely repair a cow hollow intersection where a huge sinkhole opened up this week after a water main break caused flooding. this hole opened up late sunday at the intersection of fillmore and green streets. now the broken pipe is fixed, but there are all sorts of other problems that need to be dealt with after crews inspected. they also need to replace sewer and gas pipelines as new money for child care providers in santa clara county hit hit hard during the pandemic. the county and valley health foundation have launched a $15 million grant program to boost child care. officials say more than 700 licensed child care facilities over the last ten years, including 161 that shut down during the pandemic. they can apply for the grants to help renovate, reopen or expand existing operations. >> chief children's officer sarah duffy noted that all applications must be in by mid november. so today, today is the moment to move on this. i've

with neighbors price has been doing several of these town halls in the communities over the summer. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is in the newsroom with why some of price's policies are dividing the community. gloria, good morning. >> reggie yeah, there have been many heated moments in these town halls and last night was no exception with some even storming out of that event. alameda county district attorney pamela price's town hall meeting drawing about 100 people to the niles discovery church in fremont on wednesday. more than 300 people joined on zoom. there was a recall rally before the meeting. her opponents, who believe she's too soft on crime, are spearheading a recall effort. but price hit back at those claims and says she believes the amount of guns in the community is playing a large part in the violence. she also talked about reforms that she's brought to the da's office. and one particular point of contention was her view on charging enhancement. it's something many in the audience say they want to see more of, but it's something the da

antioch officer timothy manley williams allegedly tried to help clear a speeding ticket and prevent officer andrea rodriguez from appearing in court, all in exchange for a bottle of tequila. officer manley williams is also one of the ten officers indicted back in august in the fbi's ongoing investiga gation into the antioch and pittsburg police departments. abc7 news spoke with one community activist who's been regularly attending court hearings surrounding these cases. >> i've seen the look on some of their faces. they look like they're ashamed and they look like they didn't want to be there. of course, and i feel like it's just it's time. it's time for this change to happen and this needs to happen. they need to have their day in court . >> officer manley williams, his attorney and several other officers and their attorneys declined to comment. former house speaker nancy pelosi is defending her approach to the first impeachment of former president donald trump. >> her comments come as current speaker kevin mccarthy calls on his committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into

children. the exhaustive search through rural areas of pennsylvania to finally came to an end yesterday, 30 miles from the prison after cavalcanti was detected by a plane with a thermal imaging camera around 1 a.m. they were able to move in very quietly. >> they had the element of surprise. >> meanwhile, for the first time in days, schools and businesses in the area will reopen today as local residents breathe a sigh of relief. the district attorney will now decide whether cavalcanti will face additional charges related to this escape. reggie, thanks, jobina the luxury cruise liner that ran aground off the coast of greenland with 206 people on board is finally free. >> the operator of the cruise ship reports the vessel was successfully pulled free by a fisheries research vessel at high tide. the mv explorer has been stuck for more than 48 hours on greenland s eastern coast line and recently reported an outbreak of covid 19 on board. the ship's owner says the

ship will now be taken to a port to assess any damage. a spit and run caught on camera by a doordash worker might make you think twice about your food delivery. as video shows, the delivery driver set the customer's order down to take a photo and confirm the delivery. he then mumbles something under his breath and spits on the bag of food. and not once, not twice, but three times. the 13 year old customer who placed the order did so with his mother. >> i wanted to throw up because it's so disgusting. and who does that? i guess he thought it was a little tip because he spit on the food. >> oh, no. >> he says they paid $30 for the order and added a $3 tip. isn't that good? they eventually got a refund for the order after doordash rejected their first refund request. it can you imagine rejecting the request? why? what has to happen for you to not reject the request?

doordash says that the delivery driver is no longer able to deliver orders with the company. well, i should hope not. oh, my gosh. >> this makes your stomach hurt . all right. the fda is sending a warning to cvs and walgreens for selling unapproved eyedrops . the letters were sent to the pharmacies and ten excuse me, six menu facturers saying that the products are illegally marketed for cataracts, glaucoma, and pinkeye. the fda also said that quality control of the products has them concerned about the safety of the eyedrops. those warned have 15 days to respond to those letters in writing and show what steps have been taken to correct these violations. >> now for your morning money report. a new round of layoffs is happening. one of the bay area's biggest tech companies, google, is cutting hundreds of jobs in the area. that usually goes first, which is the global recruiting division. workers began receiving notifications yesterday, but the company did not release exact numbers as the move is part of a decision to pull back hiring overall. and
