rhiannon ally. we want to begin with breaking news. the united auto workers are now on strike. >> they failed to reach a deal with the big three automakers before the contract deadline. so workers hit the picket lines at midnight outside three factories for now. >> the union is now demanding more benefits and a 36% pay increase. gm and ford are offering 20. still antis, 17. >> executives say the union's demands are not sustainable. the union says otherwise. for the first time ever, the united auto workers union is striking against all big three us car makers simultaneously. we are the union. the union overnight. the union said strikes began at factories in wentzville, missouri. toledo ohio. and wayne, michigan. a total of nearly 13,000 workers and more walkouts could soon be scheduled. >> we want fair, economic and social justice for our members. >> that's what this is all about. it's a shame on them and what they're saying is complete bs strikes at individual plants will be far less costly to the union, which pays $500 per week

to striking workers. >> the union has been demanding higher wages and benefits, including more paid time off pensions and an increase in retiree pay. >> we just want our fair share, plain and simple. but the two sides appear far apart. >> just weeks ago, the uaw president literally threw away one proposal. i'll tell you what i'm going to do with their proposal. >> i'm going to file it in its proper place because that's where it belongs. the trash. >> ford and gm are offering a new 20% wage increase. that's half of what the union has demanded. abc's terry moran asked the ceo of ford about his 40% pay increase since the last contract. why can't they get a 40% increase? >> well, i think, first of all, we are offering an incredible, unprecedented increase. >> but we can't even get any feedback from the uaw about what they want. all they want is for everyone to make $300,000. that's not sustainable. we'll go bankrupt if we do that. >> the strike could have widespread effects on the us economy. the auto industry employs nearly 1 million people

across the country. one report warns just a ten day strike against the three automakers will result in economic losses of $5.6 billion dollars. shut it down. it comes after a summer of strikes from starbucks to hollywood, where riders on the picket lines since may are now set to return to the negotiating table. ups made headlines for reaching a deal with their union before a strike. one man claiming to be a ups driver went viral on social media, posting what he says is his weekly paycheck of $2,400 for 49 hours of work in line with the union contract deal announced over the summer. and back to that uaw strike, ford is criticizing the union's demand, saying it would put the company at a significant disadvantage compared to tesla and foreign carmakers who pay lower labor costs. no new talks are expected until saturday if the strike drags on, look for car prices new and used to go up and some auto parts could eventually be, in short supply. >> the weather is also making news this morning with flash flooding in atlanta. a major downpour in just 15 minutes,

flooding roads and highways there. several people were rescued from stranded cars. the water pushed several vehicles into each other in one neighborhood. and the big story this morning, hurricane lee churning north in the atlantic. this was bermuda. waves there up to 16ft. the storm is spreading out as it moves parallel to the east coast, bringing dangerous surf and beach erosion as well. parts of eastern massachusetts and maine will see winds of up to 60mph tomorrow. we'll check your forecast in just a few moments. >> now to washington and the indictment of hunter biden. the president's son now faces felony gun charges, which could carry a decades long prison sentence. his lawyer now speaking out. abc's justin finch is here now with the details. justin good morning. >> andrew good morning. the new charges against hunter biden could mean a criminal trial next year, just as his father campaigns for reelection. this morning, hunter biden's attorney is defending his client against a new federal indictment, claiming the new gun charges won't hold up in court.

>> hunter owned an unloaded gun for 11 days. they will never have been. a charge like this brought in the united states. >> if convicted, the president's son could face up to 25 years in prison after special counsel david weiss indicted him on three felony gun charges. he's accused of lying about his drug use on an application when he bought a gun in 2018. experts say it's rare for the justice department to bring that kind of charge against a nonviolent offender. >> this is the only case i could find where it was just this charge where there was one gun. no criminal record, no other crimes were committed, and that the gun wasn't used in a crime. so when you take all of those factors together, all this is very unusual. a gun charge had previously been part of a plea deal, which also included hunter pleading guilty to misdemeanor tax charges. >> but the deal unraveled in court after republicans accused

the justice department of striking a sweetheart deal with hunter. what changed it is the folks like chairman comer and the republican maga crazies who have been pressuring this us attorney to do something to vindicate their political position and guess what? >> they succeeded. david weiss was appointed by former president trump and was kept in the role after president biden took office so the investigation could continue. >> sue hunter has also been under investigation for his business dealings and weiss has indicated tax charges could be filed at some point in washington or in california, where hunter lives. in a new interview, trump called the charges against hunter a sad situation. i'm not happy about it. >> nobody is. it's a very sad thing. and it's so bad for our country. but you know, if you think about it, i've been under investigation from the day i came down the escalator. and it's a slippery slope, a dangerous, very dangerous for our country.

>> and president biden and the white house have not commented on hunter's indictment. rhiannon >> all right, justin, thank you. now to the staggering loss of life in libya. officials say the massive flood has killed more than 11,000 people and they fear the death toll could top 20,000 as mass graves fill up. the prime minister admitted the two dance the collapsed during the storm were not properly maintained. the un says most of the casualties could have been avoided, pointing to inadequate weather warnings. >> we're learning more about two cyber attacks targeting major hotels and casinos in las vegas . the details coming to light show just how easy it can be for hackers to get our information. here's abc's andrea fujii. this morning, new details about how hackers breached some of the most recognizable hotels on the las vegas strip in one case in just ten minutes, they figured out who worked at mgm and they decided to call in the help desk and pretend that they were one

of the existing employees. >> abc news has learned a russian hacking network provided the ransomware used to a group known as scattered spider were reportedly based in the us and europe. mgm property computers, including at the bellagio and mgm grand, went down tuesday, resulting in days of long check in lines and casino machines offline, with reports of ious given out to winners. >> check in procedure is kind of messy. a lot of long lines. gambling is really messy. it's not as fun when you have to wait the financial times reports the hackers originally tried to manipulate the slot machine software. >> unsuccessful. they then hacked the resort systems in exchange for money. >> there's a good chance that they're going to get paid because they need to get those operations back up and running as soon as possible. they're losing tremendous amounts of money. >> mgm says it is operational and working. diligent while addressing individual guests needs promptly days earlier, hackers targeted caesars palace

, compromising the hotel's loyalty program data, including social security and driver's license numbers. caesars paid the ransom reported $15 million scattered. spider claims it accessed six terabytes of data from both caesars and mgm. experts warn all. big corporations are at risk for similar hacks unless employees are properly trained. >> these were the it profession angels that were fooled. these were the this was the it help desk. they've alluded that this was an outsourced vendor, but nevertheless, it's always education. it's never letting your guard down. >> caesars is now offering identity theft, protection and credit monitoring services for those affected. mid and at mgm, it wasn't just las vegas hotels affected other properties nationwide were also hit. rhiannon andrew andrea, thank you. >> it is time now for a look at your friday weather. >> good morning. all eyes on hurricane lee charging north,

>> tonight on abc. >> we're back now with some dangerous moments for this state trooper in massachusetts, a driver dragged the officer at least 50ft during a traffic stop . the trooper suffered minor injuries. he and his partner later caught the man. the driver now faces drug and other charges. >> a new twist in the legal saga of convicted killer alec murdoch. the former attorney is back in the spotlight, facing charges for what prosecutors claim was a multi-million dollar fraud. and alec murdoch appeared in court for the first time since being sentenced to life for killing his wife and son. the once prominent south carolina attorney appearing thinner but jovial. he's now facing more than 100 charges in connection with an alleged fraud scheme, including the theft of $3 million from the estate of a family housekeeper who died under suspicious circumstances. murdoch's lawyer asked the judge to delay the trial, fearing a tainted jury after the murder trial earlier this year. >> this case was tried, finished

six months ago. >> it clearly i don't think anyone perceived this had more publicity than any case in the history of this state. and maybe the country don't we need to let it calm down a little bit. where are you going to get a jury? mars the judge not budging, setting a trial date in november . >> murdoch also faces federal fraud charges accused of defrauding his clients. he's expected to plead guilty to those charges next week. and there's yet another legal battle he is fighting. his lawyers are requesting a new murder trial, claiming a court employee tampered with the jury before the verdict in march. they accused court clerk becky hill of extensive, deliberate and self-interested jury tampering, saying she advised jurors not to believe murdoch's testimony and also pressured the jury to reach a quick guilty verdict, all to secure herself a book deal and media appearances that would not happen in the event of a mistrial. will hill recently published the book behind the doors of justice. the murdoch

25 members of one family, including a two month old, caught fire on a lake near the arizona border. some even jumped into the water to safety. good samaritans helped them to shore and survivors of the fire disaster on maui will soon be allowed to get a first hand look at their homes and businesses. his officials have announced a reentry plan for escorted visits beginning september 25th. now the goal is for residents and business owners to get some closure for people entering the fire zone. will be given masks and other protective gear. they will have to apply for a pass. >> now we turn now to video from a deli here in new york where thieves got more than they bargained for during an attempted robbery. this morning, dramatic video from our new york station wabc showing store workers fighting back during a robbery. the video shows five suspects sneaking into the store , placing a worker in a chokehold while an accomplice empties the register. after speaking through a translator, the worker says he feared for his life. the only thing that was his in mind is to protect,

like how to get released from like his hand from his leg and defends himself. but as he fights back, another store employee is able to break free from the robbers and he grabs a kitchen knife. four of the suspects then flee from the store while the workers hold the remaining suspect down until police arrive. >> of course, we're going to defend ourselves. >> it comes amid a spike in armed robberies and thefts across the country. 8 in 10 retailers report increased incidents of violence and aggression this year in los angeles, police say an employee at this boutique was brutally beaten during a robbery yesterday. surveys valence video shows the clerk trying to fight back before the man pushes her down, even kicking the store dog. at one point. and in houston, a 7-eleven clerk is recovering after police say he was tied up and pepper sprayed during a robbery tuesday in chicago. police recently reported ten armed robberies in just two hours. >> in new york, jets quarterback aaron rodgers has undergone surgery after his season ending achilles injury. he posted a photo here smiling, saying
