and the night market in sunset might just be the biggest one yet. abc7 news reporter tim johns was there food shopping and music were all present in san francisco's sunset district friday for the first time ever, the neighborhood hosting an asian inspired night market. >> night markets bring people together. they make streets safer. they give a boost to small businesses. >> supervisor joel engardio is the man who brought the market to life. he says he got the idea after visiting similar night markets in taiwan on a normal friday night. the streets of the sunset can be pretty quiet, but as you can see, thanks to the new night market, they are very much alive. >> i love it. i've never seen anything. i grew up here in the sunset and this is the first i've ever seen a night market happen. so it's really special. >> paula mak says she thinks events like this are exactly what the city needs to combat its struggling image, not just for local residents, but also for small businesses, many of whom said the market is a good opportunity for them to expand

their customer base. >> i saw a lot of promotion for it online, but i think this is maybe something that san francisco is lacking right now after hosting a successful dreamforce convention earlier in the week, city officials say it's important to also remember local neighborhoods. >> this is really the locals. this is people who live in the avenues of san francisco, the various neighborhood groups and the business is that the local community supports. >> and given the seeming success of this trial run, engardio says he hopes to bring the night market back for more. we want to have night markets every month in the sunset. >> so this is where we're going to figure out what works, what doesn't. give us your feedback, and we're going to make them even better all next year in san francisco, tim johns, abc seven news. >> in the east bay, the top cop in san leandro is on leave tonight accused of violating department policy. >> the city says police chief abdul pridgen was placed on paid administrative leave this week. no reason was provided, though. the city says a third party firm

will conduct an investigation on. pridgen has been chief at san leandro for two years now and was formerly the chief of police in seaside near monterey . >> three juveniles arrested for a shooting at skyline high school in oakland are now charged in connection with the case. that shooting happened ten days on the campus in in in oakland hills. no one was hurt. alameda county district attorney pamela price announced the charges in a recorded message today. >> many people are concerned that we are not doing enough to hold young people accountable. we should all also be concerned that we are not doing enough to deflect young people from criminal activities. >> price says the gunfire at skyline appears to have been an isolated incident. she did not say what charges those teens are facing. >> oakland is facing more criticism from the community after missing a deadline to apply for a state crime prevention grant. governor newsom signed off this week on

major funding to 55 cities across california for efforts combating organized retail theft. san francisco will receive $71 million. business owners are disappointed. after oakland was just qualified because it failed to submit by the deadline. the chp says the city will likely still benefit from work in other bay area cities. >> we will be working together with all the allied agencies in the bay area and that will benefit the community of oakland, whether or not they were awarded or grant or not. we currently are doing organized retail crime efforts in the city of oakland and so that won't change. >> oakland officials say they will be looking at other grants to fight retail crime. the oakland branch of the naacp is calling for accountability and plans to host a news conference on monday. on the peninsula, palo alto is set to receive that state funding. so the police department set a plan for how to spend their $5.2 million. it will staff extra patrols, including undercover operations, over the next three years, and popular shopping areas like stanford shopping center and

downtown palo alto. stanford shopping center especially, has been an epicenter for retail theft. the city says patrol cars will be equipped with new technology that can remotely attach gps tags to cars to be monitored in case the driver flees. >> we have some new developments out of hawaii where state leaders are lowering the number of deaths from the maui wildfires. now 97 people are confirmed dead. previously, government officials said they believe 115 people died in the fires. there but further testing showed they were working with multiple dna samples from the same people. so far, 74 of the deceased have been positively identified. the number of people still missing, also down from 41 to 31. and tonight, cal fire is warning drone operators to keep their aircrafts away from wildfires. the fire agency says drones have already forced aerial firefighting to stop at at least six incidents so far. this year. emergency crews are forced to stop water and

retardant drops to avoid the risk of mid-air collisions in 2021. a drone forced air attack. firefighters to halt early stage work on the dixie fire. it eventually burned nearly 1 million acres and the sierra nevada and of course, fires are always a concern, especially this time of year. and that's why we're checking in with meteorologist sandhya patel to see if there's any concern in the next 24 hours of any wildfires. >> no, not at all. and i'll tell you why. this is the good news from a fire weather perspective, julian and emma, look at the relative humidities right now. they're high because the marine layer is so deep. it's 20 200ft deep right now. 94% relative humidity. you can see the view of san francisco showing you the gray skies, which is how you're going to start out tomorrow morning. cloudy and drizzly, 5060 on those temperatures by noontime bay and inland, you're seeing the sun coast will still be cloudy, breezy and below average for the afternoon. low 60s to low 80s. and at 7 p.m. we are talking about those

temperatures coming down and the clouds filling back in again. i'll let you know how long this cooler than average pattern will last. coming up, alma. >> all right. thank you, sandhya. san francisco's public health department is urging all san francisco residents six months and older to get a flu shot, along with the newest covid vaccine. health officials say it is safe to get both shots during the same visit to your health care provider. the new vaccine is recommended if you haven't been vaccinated within the last two months. >> we don't want to ignore the fact that we continue to have the virus among us and we want to make sure that people understand that these updated vaccines are a key way to prevent the most serious outcomes. that could still happen. >> the new vaccine is expected to start arriving at doctors offices, pharmacies and health clinics next week. >> now to the historic united auto workers strike. thousands of union members walked off the job and for the first time, the union is striking the big three auto companies at the same time . for now, uaw is doing targeted walk offs and say they will

escalate things if negotiations continue to stall. president biden, who has said he's the most pro-union president in history, weighed in today. tonight, members of the united auto workers union flooded the streets of downtown detroit. it feels good that we're actually out here standing up for what we deserve. >> they're message to the top three automakers loud and clear . >> i just started a month ago and i'm making like 16 bucks an hour and it's beating me up so i can't imagine what these people have been working 25 years, nearly 13,000 workers at three locations in the midwest walked off the job striking against ford, gm and chrysler owner stellantis. >> this is what happens when corporations don't take care of the people. there is no deal between the union and the three companies. despite weeks of negotiations today, the president weighed in. no one wants a strike, but i respect workers right to use their options under the collective bargaining system. >> and i understand the workers frustration. >> ford and gm offered a 20% wage increase, but the union is

asking for a 40% pay increase over the next four years as a return to pension plans. better retiree health care and a cost of living adjustment. gm ceo mary barra, who is also on the board of directors at the walt disney company, the parent company of abc news, says her company's offer is very strong. everybody has to understand the profits that general motors makes. >> we reinvest in the business. we reinvest in our people to put new products because having products that people want to buy is the way that we keep all of our assembly plants running. >> a stellantis spokesperson adds they are disappointed with the uaw decision to strike and will take steps to protect their north american operations and the company. and late today, ford announced it's laying off 600 workers, saying it's, quote , a consequence of the strike. and michigan's assembly plants, final assembly and paint departments. and we're hearing that negotiations are expected to resume tomorrow. the uaw says it has made a counter offer to all three automakers and is

today, those temperatures were in the mid 60s to mid 80s. it's going to be cooler over the weekend and especially sunday. live doppler seven showing you gray skies already across the bay, inland into santa rosa along the coast. temperatures right now in the 50s and the 60s. that ocean temperature is 59 degrees. and when that wind is coming off that ocean, you know, it's a cool one. here's a view of salesforce tower, san francisco under gray skies, widespread low clouds and patchy drizzle. overnight breezy and below average temperatures for the weekend. and this pattern will persist into early next week. so first thing tomorrow morning, you might want to bundle up because it is going to start out cool and gray. we will see some drizzle in the sierra, but they will see some showers and thunderstorm forms. and notice the clouds really rush back in tomorrow evening and tomorrow afternoon, evening, i should say, from the coast, your morning temperatures will be in the 50s and the 60s. watch out for some damp roadways due to the drizzle tomorrow afternoon in the south bay. it is going to be mild and sunny in the

afternoon, 79 in san jose, 82 in morgan hill on the peninsula, you're looking at 73 degrees in palo alto, 60 three half moon bay where the clouds will linger. it's still going to be breezy, 67 in the city in the north bay, you're looking at 75 degrees in san rafael, 77 in santa rosa. the sun will be out in napa for the afternoon, 75 in the east bay, mainly sunny, 70. oakland, 77. castro valley, inland areas. nice and mild, 81. concord, 84 degrees in fairfield . now we are tracking hurricane lee. rough surf, rip currents already battering the region. and as you see on live, doppler seven rain beginning to move in across parts of maine and massachusetts sits along with nova scotia area for strong winds, storm surge, those are concerns, tropical storm warnings in effect. and this category one hurricane will make its northeast would track moving away from new england. but until about sunday, they're going to have to deal with the issues there. accuweather 70 forecast feeling like fall this weekend even though it's summer as we

200 plus years, which is just a huge moment for, you know, ecological restoration and bringing back a pretty awesome species to the bay beavers offer a slew of benefits to other animals and humans. so beaver ponds and the wetlands that they build are hotspots of biodiversity. they're uniquely resistant to droughts and to wildfires, and they can help take the power out of flood waves so that when we have these big atmospheric rivers and other kinds of storm events, it's not so destructive downstream. >> since beavers travel upstream , dr. rick lanmon has an idea of where they could head next. >> san francisquito creek is unique in the south bay because it's not concrete. it's natural . so it could provide a corridor for beaver to get from this baylands to the uplands which is where we need them to get to, to fight fires for us. right? >> last year, bill leikam said his trail cameras captured a pair of beavers. while there's no confirmation they produced offspring, the video of the young beaver is offering researchers hope for their future.
