behind the scenes of her historic tour. ♪ ♪ to witness the 24 hours leading up to the b1g show. is it surreal? does it feel like a dream? >> what i say every day to myself. what i'm experiencing is really powerful for me. >> so you've won so many awards. two latin grammys. you've been at the top of the billboard charts. you've sold out shows. so many different achievements. was there a moment everywhere you said, "i did it." it recently won her a vma. karol has gained more than 65 million instagram followers and 19 billion views on youtube. she's part of a new generation of latino artists infiltrating the american music market, singing almost exclusively in span spanish. before, artists like enrique iglesias and ricky martin had to sing in a mix of english and spanish to conquer the u.s. charts. ♪ living la vida loca ♪ >> reporter: not karol g. what do you think has changed over the years? >> for me, i have to say, latinas, we have this special energy. fun, love what we do, it's expressed in our music. maybe we didn't have the opportunity to make them, like, see all this type of music and different cultures, what we have. so it's so special to see how

this vibe, how our culture, what we have is getting, like, all the attention. people are loving it. they don't even know what we're saying, but they just vibe with the music. and that's crazy. that is crazy. i love that. >> reporter: karol has risen to the top in a musical genre that is traditionally male dominated. reggaeton, ruled by stars like bad bun though and colombian singer j balvin, known for hits lick "mi jente." ♪ ♪ ♪ here you are a woman. confident. performing reggaeton, talking about sexuality, talking about emotions. did you ever face any obstacles along the way in this male-dominated industry? >> a lot. >> yeah. >> yeah, a lot. >> how did you handle that?

>> i think it was a place to have, like, my father by my side since the beginning. and he was, like, really strong with me. like, working with my mind. all the time. like the first thing was, "oh, because you're a woman, this is not going to work, this is not the way, you have to do it this way." but my idea of life is, do what you love, and you're going to find always a way. >> stop sign! hola! i love it, i love it. medellin, colombia. what was your childhood like? >> like, my father is one of 14. so i have a lot of cousins my age. we were super close. we used to travel.
