more on that story in just a moment. but first, lisa is here with the weather. >> hey, good morning to you. we had our cooldown yesterday. that does continue. so, if you like, that fall feel, i think you're going to like the next couple of days. certainly the weekend there's a look at live doppler seven where there is a system to the north and west of us and that has set up a stronger onshore flow, a deeper marine layer. so we are cloudy to start out. temperatures are in the low 60s in oakland and hayward, a little muggy out there. it's certainly not cool. but as we look outside, you'll notice that it is dark out there and we'll see temperatures stay in the 60s through 9:00, noontime. we're in the 70s inland, elsewhere mid 60s to upper 60s. and by the afternoon low to mid 80s for our warmest inland valleys. it's a bit below average and we'll have those breezy winds as well. so we'll talk about the second half of the weekend and whether or not this cooling trend stays around for the last week of summer. coming up, stephanie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. well here at abc7 bay area, we are working to build a better bay area as a part of those

efforts. we want to highlight the festivals and events, bringing the community together . we've seen it with the bhangra and beats market, the carnival at civic center plaza and now one in the sunset. despite safety concerns, people are helping small businesses get back on their feet through these events. as abc7 news reporter tim johns tells us, the night market in the sunset might be the biggest one yet. >> food, shopping and music were all present in san francisco's sunset district friday for the first time ever, the neighborhood hosting an asian inspired night market. >> night markets bring people together. they make streets safer and they give a boost to small businesses. >> supervisor joel engardio is the man who brought the market to life. he says he got the idea after visiting similar night markets in taiwan on a normal friday night. the streets of the sunset can be pretty quiet, but as you can see, thanks to the new night market, they are very much alive. >> i love it. i've never seen anything. i grew up here in a sunset and this is the first i've ever seen a night market

happen. so it's really special. paula mak says she thinks events like this are exactly what the city needs to combat its struggling image, not just for local residents, but also for small businesses, many of whom said the market is a good opportunity for them to expand their customer base. >> i saw a lot of promotion for it online, but i think this is maybe something that san francisco is lacking right now after hosting a successful dreamforce convention earlier in the week, city officials say it's important to also remember local neighborhoods. >> this is really the locals. this is people who live in the avenues of san francisco. the various neighborhood groups and the business is that the local community supports and giving the seeming success of this trial run. >> engardio says he hopes to bring the night market back for more. we want to have night markets every month in the sunset. >> so this is where we're going to figure out what works, what doesn't. give us your feedback, and we're going to make them even better all next year in san francisco, tim johns, abc seven news. >> in the east bay now, the top

cop in san leandro is on leave. >> he's accused of violating department policy. the city says police chief abdul pridgen was placed on paid administrative leave this week. it did not state why, though. the city of san leandro says a third party firm will conduct a formal investigation. pridgen has been chief at san leandro for the past two years and was formerly the chief of police in seaside near monterey. three teenagers arrested for a shooting at skyline high school in oakland are now charged in connection with the case. that shooting happened on the campus in the oakland hills last week. no one was hurt. alameda county district attorney pamela price announced the charges in a recorded message friday. >> many people are concerned that we are not doing enough to hold young people accountable. we should all also be concerned that we are not doing enough to deflect young people from criminal activity. >> price says the gunfire at

skyline appears to have been an isolated incident. she did not say what charges the teens are facing. oakland is facing more criticism from the community after missing a deadline to apply for a state crime prevention grant. governor gavin newsom signed off on major funding this week. the money will go to 55 cities across california for efforts combating organized retail theft. san francisco will receive $17 million. business owners are disappointed after oakland was disqualified fillled because it had failed to submit its application by the deadline. chp says the city will likely still benefit from work in other bay area cities. >> we will be working together with all the allied agencies in the bay area and that will benefit the community of oakland. whether or not they were awarded or grant or not. we currently are doing organized retail crime efforts in the city of oakland and so that won't change. >> oakland officials say they will be looking at other grants to fight retail crime. the

oakland branch of the naacp is calling for accountability and plans to host a press conference on monday. on the peninsula now , palo alto will receive that state funding. the police department said a plan for how it will spend its $5.2 million. it will staff extra patrols, including undercover operations, over the next three years. in popular shopping areas like the stanford shopping center and downtown palo alto. patrol cars are also expected to have new technology which attaches gps tags to cars. so they're monitored in case the driver tries to get away. and if you're headed out on bart today, you will enjoy the new round of fleet cars. it's the first weekend with the new speedy schedule. saturday and sunday service is now 20 minutes on all five lines until 9 p.m. after that, it will be 20 minutes service on three lines. this new service has been in place since monday, helping bart reach the highest single day ridership since the start of the pandemic. you can also expect to late service from levi's stadium if

you're attending the ed sheeran concert tonight. santa clara is turning into the concert mecca of the bay area. speaking of ed sheeran plays at levi's stadium tonight. and if the show sells out, it means roughly 70,000 people will be in attendance. that's more than taylor swift and beyonce. abc seven news south bay reporter justin dorsey has a look at what might be one of the biggest concerts yet. you know, levadopa is troc. >> the sounds of summer in santa clara have featured great music. top artists and plenty of screaming fans. take me out and take me home. this year, levi's stadium has hosted two of the highest grossing tours of all time with taylor swift and beyonce. but this weekend's ed sheeran mathematics tour may be the biggest one yet. >> you've got something that is going to draw an even bigger crowd than those other ones, right? we're talking about massively more people heading

for santa clara this weekend, something about the same size of the super bowl. the buzz was felt in oakland friday where sheeran made his first of two bay area stops at the historic fox theater. >> fans lined up hours in advance to see the british folk pop singer in an intimate setting. >> it's first come, first serve as far as seating. i want to be as close as i can because i love him. i love him as an artist. i love him as a human being. >> saturday and much bigger crowd will be on hand. taylor swift packed 58,000 swifties into levi's. beyonce totaled 50,000in the beehive. sheeran show is sold out as well, but bay area news group music critic jim harrington says sheeran stage setup will help his show. peak 70,000 fans with beyonce and taylor. >> you were looking at massive stage set ups that blocked a huge portion of the seats. on the other hand, you've got ed sheeran who's doing in the

across the state now, drivers could see speed cameras and automated tickets sooner than later. according to sfgate, assembly bill 645 is now on governor gavin newsom's desk, waiting for a signature. the bill authorizes the use of speed cameras capable of ticketing california drivers. here's how it would work. if you're going 11mph or more over the limit, you could get a ticket without being pulled over. if passed, the pilot program would begin in san francisco, oakland and san jose. new developments out of hawaii now. state authorities are lowering the number of deaths from the maui wildfires. now 97 people are confirmed dead . previously, government officials believed 115 people died in the fires, but further testing showed they were working with multiple dna samples from the same people. so far, 74 of the deceased have been positively identified. the number of missing people is also down from 41 to 31. cal fire is warning drone operators to keep

happening today, it just may be the cutest event in the bay area. hard to disagree here. the corgi con returns today. hundreds of people and their corgi counterparts are expected made this weekend. so many of those cute faces. there will be races, a costume contest and even a corgi market. the con started almost ten years ago. abc7 spoke to the founder about the start of the journey to now. >> we had 90 corgis at our first meetup and then now we're upwards of over a thousand corgis who come and a lot of folks actually use this as a destination for travel. >> the event starts today at 10:00 and last until 5 p.m. at the alameda county fairgrounds. tickets are $12 and you can purchase parking online at corgi con .com. i think it's so cute, lisa, that the corgis often look like their owners. >> don't they say that about all dogs. >> right. i know we see them walking down together.

>> little legs. yeah very cute. >> so cute. i don't think i'd like if anyone said that about my dog, but he's cute. >> your dog's cute too. good morning, everybody. we are starting out a pretty mild this morning. we will change that up and it will be a little bit cooler this afternoon. we started that cooling trend yesterday. here's a look at live doppler seven, the sun coming up at 652 and it sets at 716. and looking at numbers just a few in the 80s yesterday, all because of a system that is cut off from the main flow of the jet stream. there off the coast. and it's not really going to go anywhere for the next several days. so that's going to keep what we call the stratus quo intact. here you can see the low clouds, the fog all the way down the peninsula into the east bay. it is clear over by the delta. but those southwest winds gusting to 32 miles an hour. it is 61 downtown. so, yeah, it feels kind of muggy out there as well as novato, 57, up in santa rosa . and you can see all the 60s out into the east bay. here's a

look at our roof camera. cloudy skies right now. you may need your wipers. i had them on this morning. certainly mist and drizzle for the past couple of hours and with the low clouds and fog lingering at the coast, is it going to take some time to get into the sun? but once we do , it will be breezy. temperatures below average, more 60s and 70s than 80s today. there'll be a few inland, but that is below average for mid september. in this pattern. looking to persist into this last week of summer, which will be a quiet one until perhaps we get to the end of the workweek. here's a look at all the cloud cover this morning. looks like it kind of fans out by the delta, but it is clear out in fairfield and eventually that cloud deck eroding closer to us. but notice at 1230, we are still pretty gray there in the north bay, also along the peninsula. and then eventually we get a little bit of sun. but you can see by 5:00, the fog really hasn't moved too much along the shoreline. and it comes quickly back in for a repeat performance into your sunday. so as long as that low is offshore, it's going

to continue to pump in the good air quality. the taller than normal marine layer. and then the breezy afternoon. so you can see some of the high clouds coming up into your sunday afternoon. but still not looking for a whole lot of change for the second half of the weekend. so if you've been liking this weather, you will like the next several days, you can notice on sunday, look at how the things, the colors don't change. so we're in the 60s and 70s by the bay, about 80 inland. very little change. monday into tuesday we continue to this pattern highs today from the upper 60s downtown 70 in oakland. look for 75 in fremont and you head inland. we've got those lower 80s in the warmest inland valleys and you have to go pretty far out there in antioch. so the accuweather seven day forecast featuring one of the milder days today because it'll even be more of a fall like feeling into your sunday looking at the pattern holding into monday and tuesday and then by the end of the week we could get a little bump up in our temperatures. but there's also another forecast model that is

>> you might be surprised to know that classic and hundreds of other films were created inside this nondescript building on kerner boulevard in san rafael. >> film making and television changed forever in these facilities. >> now home to 3210 studios, this is the former campus of industrial light and magic, the special effects company founded by george lucas. >> right after the success of star wars. george wanted to remove himself from the hollywood system, and so he moved the industrial light and magic shop, which was down in van nuys. for star wars up here, longtime employee sean howes says many props and models from movies are still here. >> the millennium falcon, an anchor from pirates of the caribbean, even a model of chewbacca's head. >> that's a paint and sample section of the trestle from the lone ranger up there. >> lucas relocated his campus to the presidio in 2005, and he took the original door with him now on display after a decade, the studio's new owners are

calling it quits. they tell us 30 to 10 is simply going out of business. due to adverse business conditions, including the declining use of miniature practical effects in film production and also the halt in production due to the hollywood strikes. sean howes says the landlord plans to repurpose the building. >> it's a travesty. i mean, this is a historic place. the other part of it is it's a tragedy for the bay area filmmaking community. >> we reached out to the building's owner but have not heard back. sean howes says he's launching a campaign to save the campus and continue its film making legacy. >> we are in the process of setting up a go fund me so this is probably the coolest hidden gem of this property. >> this is the original theater. it's where that cool theater sound quality was born and tested. in fact, the speakers are still on the wall. sean howes hoping to preserve all the history. >> i would encourage if people do care about this place and they care about their film and everything to show their support of the continued mission of this

but with that dense fog in spots, the marine layer has made it all the way into the east bay. and there is mist and drizzle, a couple of degrees milder, but 9:00, everyone is cloudy, taking you through 1:00 and we still have clouds in the north bay along the peninsula. it's sunnier elsewhere. it's a slower warmup today. good air quality. those breezy winds. and by 5:00, we're back into the 60s and 70s could see a few low 80s far inland. but certainly cooler than mid september. and don't want to bum anybody out. but fall arrives the end of the week . >> stephanie lisa, thank you. new this morning, hundreds of additional jobs at cisco systems will be cut. the san jose based company plans to get rid of a total of 350 jobs in the bay area region alone, according to state filings, the layoffs will affect workers in san jose and milpitas. this is the company's second round of layoffs this year. back in march, cisco cut over 650 bay area jobs, which also affected workers here in

san francisco. job layoffs will happen on or around october 16th. a convention happening now in san francisco is creating some controversy. the group women's declaration international usa is hosting a three day event formed on ideas of protecting, quote, women's sex based rights. it does not consider transgender women to be women, though the convention is being held at the hilton in the financial district. the hotel has received some backlash from locals who are calling on city leaders and the hilton to denounce the event. in a statement, hilton said they, quote, do not adopt or endorse the views of any individuals or groups we serve. vendors from the un plaza farmers market say the move across the street has been tough for business. the executive director told the chronicle. many vendors are seeing declining sales since the move two weeks ago. some merchants are even considering pulling out the move to fulton plaza was to improve the conditions at civic center

because of crime and drug use and homelessness concerns, as the un plaza is also supposed to be renovated to include a new skate park. well the new covid booster shots are here and pharmacies across the us have started administering new formulas from both pfizer and moderna. san francisco's public health department is urging all residents six months and older to get a flu shot, along with the latest covid vaccine. us health officials say it's safe to get both shots during the same visit to your health care provider. the new vaccine is recommended if you have not been vaccinated within the last two months. don't want to ignore the fact that we continue to have the virus among us, and we want to make sure that people understand that these updated vaccines are a key way to prevent the most serious outcomes. that could still happen in the new vaccine is expected to start arriving at doctor's offices, pharmacies and health clinics next week. hackers are threatening more attacks after hitting the biggest hotel chain in las

vegas. mgm hotels are having trouble with room keys slot machines and atms not working as well as computer systems crippled. and this is made for long lines at several hotels on the strip as people are being checked in manually attend in some cases are even paying some people their winnings in cash. a ransomware group has claimed responsibility for this attack and says if it does not get a deal, it will carry out even more. prosecutors and former president donald trump's federal election interference case are asking a judge to impose a narrowly tailored gag order in an attempt to keep him from intimidating witnesses. according to court documents, special counsel jack smith's team accuses trump of repeatedly attacking citizens, potential jurors, prosecutors and prospective witnesses. they say the order is needed to protect the integrity of the trial. listen to trump's response on this latest court filing. we had this press persecutor, deranged

for a very long time. this is going to be a really special place for them. >> the project received $12 million from the state's project homekey initiative. residents will get support and services. customer to their needs. >> this is bringing in case managers, bringing in behavioral health folks, bringing in medical folks as needed. public health folks as needed. >> this new housing facility almost didn't happen. there was pushback from some in the community. >> but i i'm here because i'm urging you, begging you to vote no on on project homekey. there was legal action from some neighbors to keep the project from going forward. >> everybody in the community, whether they were for this project or not, understood the need for housing for formerly homeless. officials estimate there are 1100 people currently unhoused in the county. michael is ready for a place to call home. he'll move in next week. michael, what are you going to do first when you move in? >> i'm going to shout hallelu.

about an hour out from sunrise. time now, 539. police staffing across california continues to be a struggle. as of last month, the california highway patrol was trying to fill more than 1000 vacant officer positions across the state, according to the public policy institute of california. in 2021, the number of patrol officers per 100,000 residents was the lowest it had been since 1991. but one bay area county has been trying out a new strategy. a $75,000 bonus. and yes, it's working. >> the cost of living, it's astronomical. it is difficult to afford housing here in the bay area. so i learned that a lot of times. >> swease says the shortage of officers in his department has been cut in half since implementing the policy in alameda. coming up at abc7 mornings at eight, the chief will join us live to explain the impact it's having on other departments across the bay area. well a newborn is making news. a

baby beaver was spotted in palo alto. it's the first a beaver has been spotted in the bay area in 160 years. abc7 news reporter lauren martinez has a look at why this is so important to the ecosystem. this small ball of fuzz you see scampering across is a big deal for wildlife experts. >> that little beaver boom went down there in august. >> bill leikam said one of his trail cameras near matadero creek in palo alto captured a baby beaver for this area. >> there have not been any beavers in this particular for matadero creek for over 160 years. >> experts say the industrial fur trade pushed the population to near extinction to see the beaver come back on its own is a huge moment. >> that was a trek to get there. those beavers were looking for new habitat. they were looking for a new place to settle down and they found it somewhere that they probably haven't been for 200 plus years, which is just a

huge moment for ecological restoration and bringing back a pretty awesome species to the bay. >> beavers offer a slew of benefits to other animals and humans. >> so beaver ponds and the wetlands that they build are hotspots of biodiversity. they're uniquely resistant to droughts and to wildfires, and they can help take the power out of flood waves so that when we have these big atmospheric rivers and other kinds of storm events, it's not so destructive downstream. >> since beavers travel up streams. dr. rick lanman has an idea of where they could head next. >> san francisquito creek is unique in the south bay because it's not concrete. it's natural . so it could provide a corridor for beaver to get from this bay lands to the uplands, which is where we need them to get to, to fight fires for us. right? last year, bill leikam said his trail cameras captured a pair of beavers. >> while there's no confirmation they produced offspring, the video of the young beaver is offering researchers hope for their future.

is certainly gray. we're looking at san francisco with the clouds over into the east bay. really everyone except out towards the delta where those winds are gusting to 32 miles an hour. this is lee, which is just hanging on to its hurricane status. but it continues to move up quickly out of the north at 25 miles an hour into canada, bringing some very gusty winds, coastal flooding and a little bit of rain to new england. but by the time we get to your sunday, it's sunny, more rain on the way for new england, though, on monday. otherwise as this one finally making landfall in canada later on today. so we can say goodbye to lee. and there is one right behind it that will be tracking. i think it's nigel, 63, in oakland, 64 in hayward right now. so a little bit muggy out there. temperatures a few degrees warmer as we look outside gray sky and that sun not coming up until a little bit before your 7:00. so widespread low clouds, some patchy drizzle you may need to use your wipers keep that in mind or just wait a

little while. the sun is going to take its time coming out in parts of the bay area. of course, in our east bay much sooner than closer to the shoreline. we'll be left with breezy winds, good air quality, but temperatures below where they should be for mid september last week of summer fall arrives 1149 friday night. the pattern persists into early next week, but by the time we get to friday , one system could bring in a little bit of rain shower activity. another system wants to warm us up. there's a look at the cloud cover reaching all the way into our inland east bay and look how slow it is to erode. here we are at 1230. notice much of marin county and the peninsula still socked in with the clouds and we get to about one, 2:00, plenty of sun and then by 4 or 5:00 the fog is already pushing back in. here's your sunday. and notice as the fog pulls back, we'll have a few high clouds come into the picture. certainly in the south bay, maybe in the east bay, but still it'll be a nice afternoon with very little change from

your saturday to your sunday. so temperatures a few degrees shy of average upper 70s in san jose. look for mid 70 s around the bay here though, those breezy winds allowing for numbers to be mainly in the low 70s from palo alto, 77 in redwood city downtown few degrees shy of average. we should be about 70. this is our warmest time of year in the city in september. but we will certainly have the win today to contend with. partly cloudy skies and up in the north bay, look for upper 70s in santa rosa. really quite nice here for wine country. could be a lot hotter and on the east bay a little cloudy to start out partly cloudy throughout the mid day then sunny in the afternoon. we're looking at 75 in san leandro as well as union city inland, just some low 80s. so very similar to yesterday in the accuweather seven day forecast. looking at few degrees of temperatures dropping for your sunday. keeping it there on monday and tuesday. very little change. and then by the middle to the end of the week looks like we could mix up the pattern
