furious about the latest claims from community leaders. they say a multi-million dollar missed opportunity was no mistake. plus, former president donald trump says he plans to skip the second republican primary debate in california. scheduled for next week. we'll tell you why when you join us at 9:00. >> it's going to be a little bit later than 9:00. let's call it 930 for that. but as we welcome you back to toyota after the game, larry beil, mike pawlawski. 49 ers survived a real scare from the rams yesterday, 3223. in what technically was brock purdy's worst start as a 40 niner. if you want to call it that. 17 to 25 206 yards and no touchdowns, no picks. he did score on a quarterback sneak some are concerned with purdy and the overthrows let's let's roll the clip right here because i actually look at it as a positive given that he's coming off of elbow surgery. i want him to be able to overthrow a guy not necessarily on every play here. >> brandon aiyuk this is a sluggo right slant and go watch
9:01 pm
the slant. get the corner to bite. go north and south. two parts here. aiyuk has to turn and run coming out of it. but then purdy has to put that ball up there, put a little air underneath it, and let his receiver get to it. so that's a missed opportunity. debo was talking about missed opportunities. here's a big one. purdy trying to do too much. look everybody off. you had a whole flood of routes going to the right. the safety goes with it. it should have taken the take to jennings. couldn't get it there. here at the end, same thing. overthrew it. overthrowing rob coverage. watch the man sitting in the middle. purdy comes back to it late, sees him and reacts with the overthrow and dang it, i missed it. i love that about it, by the way. i do. i absolutely love that because my words would have been much more choice than that. yeah they couldn't have made air had a banger tonight. >> george. >> but when you got dudes like this george kittle who can pick you up when you're not quite on and you can throw it out to jennings, who's going to win the one on one battle? this is what helps you as a quarterback, even in the days when you're not perfect. brock purdy is ruthlessly efficient underneath . but when you got deebo samuels taking the now screen to the
9:02 pm
outside and doing this, you can miss by a little bit and still be good. what that tells you is there is a lot left in brock purdy's game for him to improve at that position because what you're seeing is him anticipating throws. he can see things before they're open he's getting his feet there but as he grows he's going to anticipate even better those longer throws. he's going to put air underneath them and they're going to be completions. there's going to be more points on the board after after with those throws. i don't know if you did it on purpose, but the perfect for per i was, but i'll take it what was good and if that's his worst game the niners will certainly take that because as one of the keys is no turnovers just don't give the ball away and that's why he hasn't lost a regular season game there you go. >> i mentioned brandon aiyuk and we saw him in the highlights here. he only has a few days to heal up before kickoff on thursday night, limited to just three catches for 43 yards. and you can see this is early in the game and he was really in pain. it was obvious and it seemed, at least to my untrained eye, that the niners late in the game were
9:03 pm
using him more as a decoy with deebo samuel getting the majority of targets now shoulder we don't know it's not believed to be really serious. but if he can't go it would obviously hamper the niners offense and i'd i don't know what is your feeling about thursday night football it's so hard for these guys on a quick turnaround especially if you get dinged up on a sunday and be back playing on a thursday. >> it's tough and it depends on the extent of an injury. shoulders are tricky as well, but there's an old saying in football for trainers and for coaches, are you hurt or are you injured? and so the question is, is aiyuk hurt or is he injured? if you're injured, you can't play. right. but if you're hurt , then you can always just rub some turf on it and go back and see. we used to rub dirt, but it's turf now. you can't run kevin rudd dirt on it anymore. but if you're just hurt, you go back and play. aiyuk is a really important part of this offense. without him, they have a hole in that offense. but getting back with a thursday night for a shoulder like that's a quick turnaround. yeah. >> i mean, we'll see what the niners do you know whether they decide, look, it's too soon let's just we want him for the
9:04 pm
entirety of the season and rest him but he's such a talented player. i mean he's really good. he's really, really good. so you want him out there as a quarterback? >> you definitely want him out. you can see i turned my head a little stiff. i played with a broken neck my last year in the xfl. >> so we should point out he didn't know that his neck was broken when he was. i did not know it. he found out later. otherwise you would have stopped, i assume. >> i would have stopped had i known. i probably would have stopped. okay. >> that's a good probably probably. probably. maybe not. all right. this is i got to do a warning right now. this is the portion of the program where the cal fans may want to look away or go to the refrigerator because you profess your love for stanford man. christian mccaffrey, such a stud. and i imagine all of your cal people were saying, mike, a 20 carries a buck 16 and a touchdown had three catches for 19 yards, if you like football and you don't like christian mccaffrey, you don't really like football. >> this dude is a football player. i don't care where he went to school. he is outstanding. get him the ball. he can catch it. he can run it. he has great vision. he has
9:05 pm
great understanding of the game. being a great player, son, i'm sure helps him in that regard. but he has so many tools. i mean, strong forearm. he's been in the weight room. he's gotten better and better every year. he played he was fantastic in college and he's still great. look at him taking the toss off the outside. watch this. the strong finish with the get off me. yes stiff arm. i absolutely love that christian mccaffrey is a stud. whether he went to stanford or cal, this dude is a football player. >> so at the end of the play, ahkello witherspoon, the x niner is the one that tackles him. and they started jawing. we came out of it a little early there, but they started yapping and christian was asked about it in the game and he said, oh, all we were saying is, you know, good to see you. did you get those gloves? >> i left in the locker? >> exactly. yeah. just casual conversation, right? they i think both guys were saying more than dang well, it's loud on the field. >> you have to raise your voice. so it looks animated, but it was probably very nice. >> so just touch on this real quick because elijah mitchell,
9:06 pm
the backup tailback, didn't get a carry in this game. i mean, he was just on the sidelines the whole time. it seems like the niners are trying to get christian the ball in his hands whether it's a handoff or swing pass, whatever it is, like 25 touches at his size. is that too much? >> i don't know if that's too much. i mean he is such a good football player. 25 touches. i think for him. a he's going to be carrying it inside zone, outside zone. you sell that toss, there's going to be some run plays that are designed just for him. but then you also get him the ball on the swing passes. you get him the ball in the open space, you run him on the texas or the angle route. so there's a lot of stuff that he does. 25 touches. i try to get him the ball more than that personally because he's such a good football player, but you need it for the back end. but you also you also have other tools everywhere around that you can work with. so you don't just need to be on your running back the entire time, but he's really good. as i said, i like him pretty much with everything he does. >> he's a tremendous player. i just want to make sure we see
9:07 pm
him in october, november, december and january. >> the running back position we talked about the running back position is hard on human beings. >> speaking of which, we just got the official word that nick chubb is going to be out for the entirety of the season after a really gruesome knee. >> i don't think there was much doubt after seeing. >> no, no, there was not more to come. on toyota after the game. we talked niners who have a quick turnaround even quicker for the new york giants because they got to travel. we'll show you what they need to study
9:10 pm
night football, a home opener for the niners at levi's stadium. giants going to be without saquon barkley, who scored a couple of touchdowns a short run had a td catch he's clearly new york's most dynamic weapon but he sprained his ankle late in that victory. we sorry for those of you that have saquon and he was your number one pick in fantasy. oh, right. that's me. anyway he's projected to be out for three weeks. they say it's not the dreaded high ankle sprain, which takes longer to heal. but obvious frustration for him on the sidelines there. three years ago, he blew out his acl. also in week two. whatever you make of that. and another interesting connection between these teams is that matt breida is the backup for the giants, the former nightbreed of the
9:11 pm
cheetah. three of the cheetah super fast. but but this is obviously a huge loss for the giants who don't have a great prolific offense to begin with. well we talked about how tough it is on running back saquon barkley is a stud when you don't have your main guy toting the rock, it makes it way harder on the offense. yeah. so now the burden really is on daniel jones to carry the giants offense. now he's got some skills threw for 321 yards to touchdowns. had a pick 3128 over arizona again that game was probably closer than a lot of people expected. he can make plays with his legs and that may be where he's most dangerous. nine carries 59 yards. the touchdown here, he's got good speed. here's the thing that just kills me. he signed a four year, $160 million contract extension back in march. don't you wish you were coming out of college right now to play in the nfl? wouldn't it? you'd be getting paid. and cal actually minimum is so much more than it used to be. >> when i came out like i got a stick of bubble gum and a hot cup of coffee when i came out. so that was that was my pay. but
9:12 pm
more power to him. this game is all about entertainment. you're taking the shots. so if daniel jones is taking the shots and he can negotiate that contract, more power to him. yeah. >> top targets. ex-raider darren waller, the rookie jalen hyatt out of tennessee. i don't mind paying patrick mahomes, who by the way, just got a massive extension. it is $210 million over four years. remember he he'd signed that ten year contract that made him the highest paid player in the history of everything, and he is now the. coming into today was the eighth highest other guys jumped. patrick how do you jump patrick mahomes the whole system is just so goofy. it's really good to be a quarterback no matter what it is these days is at this point. all right. niners have a new defensive coordinator in the off season they hired steve wilks. it was kind of a bend but don't break situation in against the rams you put together with casey pratt our producer a really a great breakdown uh- niners got only one sack in this game but your illustration of it. well, let's just see it right now. >> i love the game behind the game and this is what we're
9:13 pm
going to look at here. we talk about team defense right? fred warner comes in, gets the sack from his linebacker position. how does that happen? well, the defensive line is going to slant to the right. warner is going to loop over the top when he does the right guard, who's a replacement player in this game because of injury, misses his block, doesn't come back. and so you think, okay. warner that defensive line got a done. but no, look out to the right you've got deshaun gibson on the jam outhe over higbee. he stacks up two receivers now look at matt stafford he's looking to his right, looking for what you call a hot route or a site adjust he's got nothing. he doesn't have it. fred warner gets home because matthew stafford had nowhere to go with the football. if gibson does not get the jam at the line of scrimmage on higbee, stafford gets rid of that ball and he gets a pretty good game because the middle of that field was wide open. instead, fred warner gets the sack team defense is why the niners are so good. good players at every spot out there. and when you have dudes like that who play great team defense
9:14 pm
and selfless team defense, you can be outstanding both sides of the ball right now for the niners a lot of good players on offense a lot of really good players on defense making team defensive plays. >> that roster is stacked. that was the only sack of the game and you wonder if the niners will blitz more going forward to get home but stafford gets the ball out so quickly i mean that's why the rams won the super bowl a couple of years ago. more to come on toyota after the game there was another monday night game. derek carr, we used to see derek carr around here a lot, then vegas and now in new orleans. can he lead the saints to a two and zero record? that's next.

browns and steelers. terrible towels everywhere. first play from scrimmage by deshaun watson , picked by alex highsmith, who did not. high step but he did take it to the house. 30 yards pick six to start it for the steelers. i know as a quarterback you see a ball go through a guy's receiver's hands and you're not that thrilled with it. but this is the other browns receiver got a block on the play as well so pick six. >> that makes it tough. >> this is the sad story of nick chubb and you see the anguish in his face done for the season. later in the drive, watson scrambling here to jerome ford for the touchdown. ford backing up chubb. he looks like he's pretty good. 16 carries 106 yards, three receptions, 25
9:18 pm
yards. and the touchdown, we're speeding things up. kenny pickett to george pickens. he's not really that fast 71 yards and pickett just got drilled, but he hung in there and delivered the ball third quarter, second and goal for the broth. i love a guy, a running back named strong. you better get something. >> yeah, it's an all name team for sure. pierre strong, 20 to 19 browns. >> seven minutes left steelers defense again. this is how we started the show. >> hey, look, it's t.j. watt again. >> well, it's the same play. oh shocker. well you know what? you know what is the same alex highsmith, who accounted for the other touchdown, created the fumble. so the steelers win this game by a final of 26, 22. they're one and one. the browns are one and one. the bengals are. oh, and two. we thought they were going to be the best team in the division ravens two and oh, let's move on. derek carr and the saints trying to go two and zero against carolina bat this the first half of this game was almost unwatchable. oh it was slow sacked twice and that's into triple coverage there picked by vonn bell six
9:19 pm
three was the score on field goals with three minutes left in the half but ensuing drive the rookie first pick bryce young strip sack goes down here. saints recover. oh brother precision football right there it was his parents watching their six three at the half. he stayed in the game he's fine. third quarter tied at six. chris olave ohio state does turn out some receivers i've noticed. >> yeah they they turn out some pass catchers for sure but watch that this is all concentration that ball out there dude hanging on your arm and you still find a way to pull it in. that's outstanding effort and tony jones junior were the first of his two scores on the night carolina fans. >> well, i'm sorry that says it all, doesn't it? it does. it does. saints win 2017. they go two and zero. let's focus on carr. this is his 10th year in the league. of course, we saw him with the raiders both in oakland and l.a. struggled was up and down first year with the saints and they have high hopes
9:20 pm
for him tonight. i mean 21 to 36, 228 yards. no touchdowns a pick. he's one of those middle tier guys. he he and jimmy garoppolo almost the same in some ways. he was on bad teams for a lot of time. but give me your take on on dc it never helps to not have all the talent right you want to have all the tools. >> so he's never really had all the tools, but he's kind of a see it and throw it guy from the from the tape that i have broken down on derek carr he wants to see his receiver open. i talk about anticipation a lot and you have to have it as a quarterback. like if you're a see it and throw it guy you either have to preset all of your progressions so that you know exactly where you're going with the ball or make the first progression work or you have to put up with a little bit of lateness in the throw. and in the nfl, being late means you're going to miss a lot. having great receivers like chris love out there making catches for you is huge, but if you have to see a guy open, you're going to be late a lot. you see how derek carr has to throw the ball hard down the field and flat if with
9:21 pm
anticipation that ball comes out early with air and you give your guy a chance to run for it, he's been coached by a lot of guys. >> you could see he's there, separation there on the olave play. you know, he obviously trusts him enough to throw it up and let him make a play. kind of like the one year with devante adams can you coach that out of a guy i mean in year ten, you throw it three steps earlier, you throw it on the break instead of after the break, before you see him set his ankle, you understand where he's going. >> and you put that ball up there and i say this derek carr is a really good quarterback. however, the great quarterbacks, the guys that you look at and go, mahomes go down the list steve young montana for niners guys i mean all those type of guys they have incredible anticipation of what's going to happen and trust some of that comes from chemistry. a bunch of it comes from film study, from from working in the film room and doing the work on the x's and o's and knowing your game inside out, understanding what the defense is going to give you. but really, all of that chemistry works together so that you trust the guy that you're throwing the ball to and the see it and throw it. guy doesn't
9:22 pm
trust where that throw is going to go. he has to see the angle set before he lets go of that ball. and it's hard to be outstanding if you're a see it and throw it, especially with the windows in the nfl being so small, so small, dudes are so fast. >> steve young used to say in college, everybody's wide open all the time. and then in the nfl, it's like you've got to throw the ball through a keyhole or more to come. on toyota after the game, there were some funny clips, some funny stuff, a couple in particular, mike mcdaniel, who knew he had to speak. >> it's a sprint. >> he's like mostert the most sarathi we'll be right back
9:24 pm
9:25 pm
intentional grounding offense number seven. that's a ten yard penalty. and i'm talking to america here. excuse me, a ten yard penalty and a loss of down. >> second down. that is the best line i've ever heard. >> adam fisher we'll get to the penalty in a minute. he just took geno smith. i'm talking to america. >> excuse me. i'm talking to america. and mike pawlowski. right now. i'll deal with you. have you ever heard a ref or did you ever say, have a conversation or say anything? >> i've had conversations with refs all the time. they didn't say much, but i talked one and two, a game winning penalty on the opposing team should have never called it, but i lawyered him into it. so it worked for me. >> what was the what was the jack out of the box? >> i was playing in the arena league and i told him that jack
9:26 pm
had to be out of the box to make that play. and he thought about it for a second. he's like, yeah, you're right. he had to. he went back and looked at it and then filmed. the dude was completely within the box, so the linebacker, he was right where he was supposed to be, right where we were supposed to be, got the first down, got the touchdown, won the game. you got to be good back there. >> yeah. you're you're dangerous. another one of our favorite videos from yesterday, miami head coach mike mcdaniel. remember his time with the niners? so he's going to the locker room at halftime. he sees the cameraman who's running with him. you'll see the glance right here. and then it goes boom, like the roadrunner. well not quite like the roadrunner, but he's faster than the cameraman. a little bit of burst there. >> you know, i love he's still having fun as a head coach, right? still still. and that's they don't do that. nfl head coaches don't do that. so having fun is good by the way, his personal story overcoming alcoholism and being fired and then having to work his way back up the ranks and getting to a coordinator level and then getting the opportunity to be a head coach. >> if you see the espn did a story, it's truly inspirational. what he's been through and his focus now let's get to next
9:27 pm
week's schedule because we got another doubleheader coming up and we're coming on after the first game. that'll be eagles at bucs at 4 p.m. right here on abc seven, followed by toyota after the game. the late game will be over on espn and that will be rams at bengals. and so we'll obviously dip in and keep tabs on that but going to be interesting to see the eagles, especially eagles niners looking like the two best teams in the nfc no doubt i mean two of the offenses right you've got hurts on one end running it one way and then purdy running it from the pocket as a master back there with anticipation like we talked about by the way, abc is added like ten more games to the monday night schedule. you're going to see a lot of mike and i like it or not. sorry,

violate them did not undermine their trust that that i am who i said i was. committed to the city of oakland. someone who was doing the job the right way. >> oakland's fired police chief, laurent armstrong, saying he is, quote, vindicated after the result of an independent investigation cleared him of all
9:31 pm
wrongdoing. good evening. thanks so much for joining us for this special edition of abc7 news at nine. i'm julian glover. >> and i'm karina nova. the attorney representing the former chief says the 55 page report overwhelmingly sides with armstrong. so much so that the city is being asked to consider rehiring him. >> abc7 news reporter stephanie sierra has our details. >> a sigh of relief from former oakland police chief laurent armstrong. >> i think today is something that i envisioned happening a long time ago. >> armstrong was placed on leave in february after the city's federal monitor suggested he mishandled two incidents of misconduct within the department. but this 55 page report exonerates armstrong of those accusations. >> that report concludes that, number one, the chief never should have been disciplined. there is no factual basis for the discipline that was issued and is recommended that that discipline be reversed and removed from his file. number two, the criticism of him in the
9:32 pm
federal monitors outside law firm reports were unfounded. the determination that his he was lacking in credibility during that investigation does not have a factual basis. and according to armstrong's attorney, will edelman. >> the report found the initial findings from the federal monitor did not draw the appropriate conclusions. the conclusion that he violated any department rules also lacks a factual foundation and is simply not accurate. >> this sounds like what i told you months ago. it's unfortunate that we've had to come to this point. >> the report concluded the former chief's termination was illegal retaliation in violation of his first amendment rights and a statement oakland mayor shane tao wrote, while the law prevents me from publicly discussing the details of the report, neither my administration nor the federal court agreed with mr. armstrong that the findings could be written off as mistakes. oakland needs leaders, including at opd, who will stand up and make tough decisions in the name of accountability and community trust by immediately and prematurely standing up for
9:33 pm
himself personally. mr. armstrong failed to stand up for accountability at opd. according to initial reports, the former chief said he was wrongly fired under labor code and whistleblower statue. but this report says the city did not violate labor code. >> now, this, you know, concludes the fact that i didn't do anything wrong. >> in august, armstrong filed a legal claim of wrongful termination against the city, which could open up the possibility of a lawsuit. but the report specifically states it recommends the city settle with armstrong, as well as consider rehiring him. stephanie sierra, abc seven news. stephanie thank you. >> taking a look at the new report out on the firing of former chief laurent armstrong, the city is tasked with possibly reinstating him or facing a civil lawsuit. abc seven news insider phil matier gave us some perspective on what could be next for the city. >> basically what this this judge said was that, okay, you've made these conclusions
9:34 pm
that he he mishandled it, but i don't see any proof. you don't present any proof that he actually did. it's all this investigator's opinion and you're operating on opinion rather than fact. and based on that, you don't have a case here. but what do you do after the genie's out of the bottle? after you fired the chief? it's it really puts the mayor in a difficult position. the oakland police commission, which oversees the department, but they wanted him to stay. they did not recommend firing him. they and the mayor moved around them and went and fired him. they are now charged with finding the new chief and they have a couple until the october. they said they will be submitting the mayor three names of possible candidate s so his name could be on it. thank you. his name could be one of the three. and this could be back in the mayor's lap again. >> armstrong shared with our team today that he was unaware of a personal vendetta that could have led to his firing and says he also sent a report that contradicted the initial findings to the city. he felt
9:35 pm
that report was ignored and in just the past 15 minutes, the oakland police commission just wrapped up a meeting at the next commission meeting, they've decided to add a recommendation to reinstate former chief armstrong or include him among the list of finalists as phil matier just suggested. >> they also decided to extend the contract of interim police chief darren allison until a new chief is appointed, which they hope to do in the next six months. >> meanwhile, today, officials with the oakland chapter of the naacp didn't hold back and voicing their disappointment and anger of the city's missed deadline to apply for a state grant to fight escalating retail crime. abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley has more on what they're saying and how the mayor of oakland is responding. >> oakland got nothing wrong. i'm going to say it again. oakland got nothing. members of the naacp met with community leaders at the acts full gospel church in oakland to discuss why
9:36 pm
the city of oakland failed to meet a deadline to get money from the state to fight crime. >> the naacp alleged the city may not have negligently just missed the deadline, implying it might have been intentional. >> a decision not ■to seek the funds. why would they not seek the funds? because the money was going to crime prevention through oakland police department. and there are people in town who would prefer that that money go to social programs. >> across town at a port of oakland press conference at oakland airport, the mayor fired back. >> i'm infuriated and frustrated that, you know, city staff had missed a deadline. but to assume and put out false information that somehow we didn't want to apply for it, that that's utter bs. it is absolutely not true at all. the mayor insisted they are putting in parameters so something like this never happens again, calling it a

personnel issue. there will be consequences that will be taken. >> the buck stops with the mayor. she's over oakland. she's the mayor of oakland. she needs to be held responsible for this . >> the mayor redirected the conversation to proactive steps she's taking to address escalating crime with technology, saying the city will soon be getting 300 surveillance cameras provided by the governor's office that will tag team with similar cameras in neighboring piedmont and san leandro. she also says they will soon be launching large drones to track down suspects and are awaiting faa approval in oakland. i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. after 38 years in business, popular oakland vietnamese restaurant le cheval is closing its doors. >> it's located on clay street in the downtown area. the owner tells abc seven news that rising crime is the reason they decided to shut down. he says his family is looking to relocate the business but has not yet found a
