yes. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ahmad daetz. this deadly shooting at the service center happened in a city that doesn't see many of them. according to the state's department of justice. it is a town of albany's first homicide since 2018 and only the third in the last ten years. >> police were called to the service center on the east shore highway and buchanan street shortly before noon today. >> once they got in the building, berkeley police say their officers got into a shootout before killing the suspect. >> abc seven news reporter tim

johnson has been on the scene all night long. he has new details that we're learning this evening. >> possible active shooter is going to be in albany. we do have a gsw victim. >> a tragedy unfolding in albany on thursday. police say just after 11 a.m, a man entered a local toyota service center where he shot and killed a female employee. after officers arrived, they exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who also died. authorities from several agencies, including the alameda county sheriff's office, the berkeley police department and the albany police department, were all on the scene. they told abc7 news they're still trying to determine the relationship between the man and the woman and what exactly happened. news of the shooting has been a shock to many people in this neighborhood. we talked to several folks who say albany is normally a really quiet place where stuff like this just doesn't happen. that includes fatty zoete who spoke to us in the parking lot of a target just feet away from the toyota dealership. >> very shocked, actually. and it's quite a little bit shaken

moderate to poor for sensitive groups category. but there are a few spots in the north bay that have gone to green which is good air quality. just an indication of what's to come. not immediately though, tomorrow morning that smoke is just going to settle another wave coming through from the north. but watch what happens. it gets pushed on out of here by saturday evening going into sunday. a live view right now from our exploratorium camera. that spare the air alert has been extended through tomorrow. poor air quality for parts of the bay area. moderate elsewhere. as we take a look at this time lapse from our mount tam cam, you can see that layer of smoke that is just hovering above the marine inversion, which is why that spare the air was extended. the smoke is coming from wildfires up around oregon and also northwestern california. a switch in the wind direction is going to push the smoke on out of here. i'll be back with that weekend forecast coming up. >> dan? okay, sandy, thanks very much. you can check the air

hold a apec with our large asian population. >> as many as 30,000 visitors are expected, including two dozen heads of state at 1000 ceos and hundreds of foreign journalists at bus shelters all over the city. digital signs announced that apec is coming. the global trade summit means big exposure and big bucks for sf. >> i've heard the number of $50 billion of direct economic impact to the city. >> clifton clark is the area gm for marriott hotels and the gm of the saint francis hotel. he says dreamforce, which brought 43,000 people to san francisco, was an important stepping stone. >> it was a great dress rehearsal for something like apec, the hotels. >> clark oversees are packed with guests and staff for apec. >> many of the hotels have blocks with secret service and a lot of the hotels have delegations, too. we have groups of ceos that will be staying with us. >> clark says his hotels have been doing a lot to get ready. i've set up calls with our hotels on a weekly basis

starting next week to discuss, you know, the details of in depth planning for security when it comes to logistics for the global summit. >> we're working with the secret service, the white house and the state department expect thousands of extra officers, local, state, federal arriving to help out. >> we're going to be crawling with law enforcement. as for concerns about san francisco's homeless and drug use and crime, we've demonstrated that just last week with dreamforce. >> we know how to produce an amazing show here, definitely in moscone center. and definitely within the city of san francisco . >> so the mayor has a $10 million budget set aside to help pay for overtime for police and city employees. the city has a goal of raising $20 million additional dollars for apec. it's raised more than 12 million so far. but the city is getting more help every day from private donors like sutter health. some of that money will help host multiple events around the conference. the city of san francisco is calling for 800 volunteers for apec events.

they'll be helping with credentialing, registering and helping guests at the conference center in san francisco. suzannephan abc7 news. new developments in san francisco. mayor london breed announced public safety ambassadors will be expanding their routes. according to mayor breed starting next thursday. public safety ambassadors will be expanding to clement street between arguello and park presidio. the program deploys retired police officers and supports merchant corridors across the city. ambassadors are meant to be friendly faces to help provide directions or act as crime deterrents. calif has a plan to keep insurance companies from pulling out of the state. plus international headlines and some possible relief on credit reports. >> it's all part of what's getting some attention. here's tonight's abc seven news. to know a hint of progress in san francisco's effort to crack down on car break ins. statistics show they're down by about 500 compared to this time last year . still more than 15,000 so far this year. police say this year

they have made 37 arrests in connection with break ins and are trying to make an even bigger dent by using bait cars. >> i think it shows the good work that we're doing based on the challenging, you know, things that we're dealing with as far as apprehending some of these suspects. >> it's no secret that major insurance companies are no longer writing new policies in california, primarily due to the threat of wildfires. as california's insurance commissioner has a new plan to stop the exodus. but it could result in rate hikes. ricardo flores says insurers will be able to look at potential future risks, but only if they write more policies for homes in high risk areas. some factors that could influence rates are if power lines are buried and how much defensible space is around the property. unpaid medical bills currently can appear on credit reports, but that could become a thing of the past. the consumer financial protection bureau is considering a proposal that would keep them off credit reports. the agency director says medical bills should not affect the ability of someone to

get a loan because there are often mistakes due to issues with insurance and coverage. actor and oakland native angus cloud died from an accidental overdose. that's according to the alameda county coroner. the 25 year old had several drugs in his system, including cocaine, fentanyl and methamphetamine clouds starred in the hbo series euphoria. he was found dead inside his family's home in oakland in july. another jolt of fox as rupert murdoch announces he's retiring, his son lachlan will take over as chairman of fox corporation and news corporation. murdoch's career spans seven decades and started with a small australian newspaper chain before growing into one of the world's most influential media empires and as for the biggest sports story of the night, well, it's those san francisco 40 niners they kept right on rolling with a win to move to three and zero and even better it was all in front of the 40 niner faithful for the home opener at levi stadium abc

seven news sports director larry beale was there tonight right there in the middle of it. as it seems like the 49 ers are the team to beat in the nfl. >> dan i'm a life is good for the red and gold right now. they beat the new york giants in their home opener here at levi's stadium by a score of 30 to 12. and we had the pow wow on the sidelines before the game with bob myers, ex of the warriors, talking with john lynch. myers helped out in the nick bosa contract talks. this game really felt like a grind, not a ton of great highlight reel plays, but christian mccaffrey scored on a four yard td run just before the half 12 straight game. he's found the end zone last nfl player to do that. the hall of famer ladainian tomlinson quarterback brock purdy facing intense pressure. giants blitzed all night long, threw for a personal regular season. best 310 yards and yes back to his customary two touchdowns per game deebo samuel tremendous in the win it's the third straight game the niners have scored exactly 30 points and i asked coach kyle shanahan about that after the game. you scored 30 in all three wins. i would think it has to be somewhat encouraging

owner's husband. they said they found fentanyl on playmats at the site. the facility had just passed an inspection. new at 11, the county of san mateo has created a domestic violence task force after the murders of five women this year. >> the task force's goal is to save lives, of course, and strengthen response and support systems in the county. >> we know that the window of time for victims and survivors of domestic violence for when they want to seek help is very it can be very small. and so we need to make sure that they have the support needed when they are seeking help. >> five all five homicides this year in san mateo county have been the result of domestic violence. that is not counting the mass shooting in half moon bay. the task force is made up of survivors, advocates, law enforcement and various officials. >> domestic violence affects an estimated 10,000 people in san mateo county every year. all right. >> developing news with the possible government shutdown as

we look out live from the us capitol tonight. actually, we don't have that for you right now. we apologize. infighting though, among republicans is holding things up in the house of representatives. there's your look. they have now started their weekend for the second time this week. they failed to muster the votes to begin debating a defense spending bill. there are nine days to get a deal done. and house speaker kevin mccarthy is facing pressure from hard line conservative members to drastically cut spending. >> this is a whole new concept of individuals that just want to burn the whole place down. >> it doesn't work. i know it's an obstacle, but i find it as a challenge and we're going to solve it. >> house democrats. senate democrats. senate republicans and the white house have all worked together to come up with a plan to fund the government. but it's house republicans who want to shut it down. and so it's time that they join the rest of us and choose competence over chaos. >> another sticking point is funding for ukraine as the white house announced another funding package, republicans would like to see more accountability.

>> 8-80 this is remarkable. fda advisers have wrapped up a two day summit on potentially game changing technology that could save premature babies after their birth. they introduced an artificial womb. just like it sounds, it mimics the real womb of the baby's mother by delivering oxygen nutrients and hormones to the infant. as it continues to develop. so far, the artificial womb has only been tested on animals. the fda is in the early stages of talking about what human trials would look like, but they say there are several ethical hurdles to clear. first star bucks will now have to face a lawsuit claiming its fruit refresher drinks do not actually have some fruit in them. a federal judge allowed the case to move forward yesterday. one of two plaintiffs is jason mcallister from fairfield. the lawsuit alleges the drinks, which come in various fruit flavors, did not contain in any mango passion, fruit or flavors like or chi a starbucks says the claim is baseless and is looking

forward to defending itself in court. >> would you live in something like this? well, some tech entrepreneurs in san francisco are becoming pod people renting a sleep pod for $700 a month. there are sacrificing comfort so they can pour more money into their startups. the big attraction right now is artificial intelligence. several founders have come together to form a community in one building where about 20 people rent sleeping pods, then spend their days working in the common space and networking. i actually pushed off coming to san francisco for a really long time, but it's been absolutely net positive, without a doubt. >> like just within the first couple of days i met some of the smartest people i've met in my entire life. so that's the reason i came and that's the reason i'm staying. and that's the reason why i'm living in a pod. >> san francisco will host its second ai conference this year. on november 15th. it's expected to draw about 350 of the industry's leading founders and investors to the city. >> talk about paying your dues. oh, yeah. >> all right. let's get to our weather because the weekend is right around the corner. boy, it

sure is. >> and fall is right around the corner, right? seasons changing. meteorologist cynthia patel is here. sandy. >> yeah, around this time tomorrow night, we'll be closer out summer. dan and let me show you what you can expect at 1150 tomorrow night, the autumnal equinox takes place and the sun's rays will be directly over the equator. at that point. here's a live view. it's a beautiful one. as we look across the bay to emeryville. so for the first weekend of fall, we are going to notice an improvement in our air quality. but until then, we do have a spare the air for tomorrow. moderate to poor air quality. saturday, we start to see some good air quality. and sunday, monday it's good across the entire bay area as the sea breeze strengthens low clouds are banked up along the coastline and will be advancing as the night goes on across the bay and into the morning hours. this area of low pressure brought us the gusty winds over our hilltops. earlier this morning, we had 50, 52 mile an hour winds bringing that fire danger. but that is moving out of the picture. the winds have subside mid over our hilltops

and as you will notice, the wind is going to start to shift coming more out of the west southwest saturday night going into sunday, which will set the stage for better air quality for all of us to breathe easier temperatures in the 50s and 60s right now, a live view from our golden gate bridge camera. it's a little bit murky there. hazy skies through tomorrow. better air quality this weekend. fall arrives tomorrow night at 11:50 p.m. and we do have a chance of showers the first of the season late monday into tuesday morning. first thing tomorrow morning, watch out. it's going to be a great start. visibility is going to be poor as it is in parts of the bay area tonight because of the smoke and the low clouds. tomorrow afternoon, i think most of you will see the sun except for a few spots. morning temperatures in the 40s, 50s. it's getting cooler as we head towards fall tomorrow afternoon. low 60s to low. 80s hazy sunshine for your friday and then we're going to really take you into early next week because we do have that front coming in. monday night is our first opportunity for rain going

into tuesday morning. now computer models are kind of varying on how much rain and who's going to get rain. so this computer model is the gfs. it's keeping the rain line in the north bay with nothing measurable for most other parts of the bay area. the european model is actually showing wet weather across the entire bay area, 100th of an inch in san jose, up to a half an inch in santa rosa. even more than that in ukiah. so stay tuned. you may be needing those umbrellas before you know it. accuweather seven day forecast. autumn begins tomorrow at 1150 at night and we are in for a mild breezy weekend with good air quality chance of some wet weather between monday night and tuesday morning. and we'll go with a mild to warmer pattern mid week. i'm and dan
