overnight to massive tow trucks pulled that charter bus from a ravine. hours after it careened off a new york highway, killing two people. >> we're safe. thank god, but we're praying for the other families. >> she's safe, just devastated about the other kids the bus was carrying members of a marching band from long island to pennsylvania when it skidded off the highway, landing on its side and tumbling 50ft. >> imagine the fear, the screams . in the aftermath when these high school students were surrounded by this chaos. >> i woke up, i heard this really weird sound, and then i heard the bus, like, start to like, roll over the hill. >> 15 year old anthony eugenio recalls the bus rolling over several times. i heard him screaming and then, like i felt it as soon as i picked my head up the kid next to me was

covered in blood, blood everywhere. two adults were killed, including 77 year old beatrice ferrari, a retired teacher described as the heart and soul of the band program, also killed the band's director, 43 year old gina pellettieri. >> she was an inspiration to me . she was always happy, always positive, always passionate. >> many of the students classmates learned about the crash from text messages. >> somebody sitting in our class and showing us the pictures and stuff, you know, it's not a great way to find out. >> the ntsb is estimating, but authorities say a blown tire is likely to blame for the crash. five students were still in critical condition last night. >> the other big story this morning, the crisis on the southern border. as more migrants flood into the us. questions are being raised about the biden administration's new plan to help venezuelan migrants find jobs. here abc's andrea fujii takes a closer look. >> new figures this morning show migrant crossings at the us

border are now approaching the record levels seen back in may. border patrol says nearly 9000 migrants crossed the southern border this past wednesday alone . the white house is sending another 800 troops to the border to help with processing. but the bigger move made this week by the biden administration will give nearly half a million migrants from venezuela to here before july 31st. temporary legal status lasting 18 months. >> these migrants will be able to apply for work permits in new york city, an estimated 40% of migrants are venezuelan. >> the mayor hopes this move will allow thousands of them currently in city shelters to find a job. and move out. >> this was important because i'll take this. there's 9500 people. i don't have to find housing for. >> but others say giving this break to venezuelans is unfair. >> the policy that the president put in place allows for those individuals who are coming over the border today to get appointments and be heard prior to the people who have been waiting in line and that's wrong.

>> critics also worry this temporary protection status or tps, will only encourage more people from latin america to head toward the us. some researchers have looked at this and they have not found strong evidence that tps leads to future spikes in immigration. >> there are just a lot bigger factors that shape whether people move in the meantime. >> another reminder of just how dangerous the journey north can be in eagle pass, texas, where 2500 migrants crossed on wednesday, two people drowned in the rio grande, including a three year old boy. as for the venezuela is covered by the biden administration's new policy, they still face a major backlog when it comes to getting work permits. the administration has promised to speed up the processing of work permits, although temporary protective status is for 18 months, it is often extended. andrew rhiannon andrea, thank you. >> the united auto workers could expand their strike this morning. the union's president is expected to post an update

carolina. the pilot seemingly confused about where his jet ended up. i'm not sure where the airplane is. >> it would have crashed, landed somewhere. i ejected the f 35, crashed sunday after a malfunction, forced the pilot to eject near charleston, but the jet kept flying, crashing in a rural area about 60 miles away. i just wrote a parachute down to the ground. can you please send an ambulance? >> okay, i understand, sir. okay. just to confirm how many people are hurt. well i'm the only one. >> i'm not sure. a local resident also called 911 calmly explaining that the pilot had just parachuted into his backyard. >> i guess we got a pilot at our house and he says he got ejected. so he ejected from the plane. so we just see if we could get some ambulance, please. >> i'm sorry. what happened? >> uh, we got a pilot in the house and i guess he landed in my backyard. >> officials finally found wreckage from the $100 million jet. more than 24 hours later, experts say the f 35 is designed to erase all communication when

a pilot ejects to protect the pilot's location and the jet's classified systems, which explains why it could not be tracked on radar, the pentagon has said it plans to spend $1.7 trillion on more than 2000 f 35 seconds. but a new report questions what taxpayers are getting for all that money. a government watchdog found f-35s are available to fly only 55% of the time because of so many maintenance issues. it's unclear what prompted the pilot to eject in south carolina, but a review board is investigating a dangerous child sex offender who was able to walk out of a saint louis hospital is back in custody. >> tommy wayne boyd is serving 30 years in surveillance video captured him leaving the hospital early yesterday. he was caught last night about six miles away. meanwhile the manhunt for is expanding for the murder suspect who was mistakenly released from an indiana jail. officials blame a clerical error. more than 100 officers are searching for kevin mason, who is accused in a fatal shooting in minnesota.

washington sunday night on abc. >> authorities near berkeley, california, are investigating a deadly shootout at a toyota dealership. police say they killed a suspect who had just gunned down a female worker in the service department. no one else was hurt. no word yet on a motive. >> new at accusations have come to light against the utah mother accused of killing her husband and then writing a book about grief. her brother, d.j, is now speaking exclusively to abc news . we're now hearing from the family of corey richens. the children's book author accused of fatally poison her husband. her brother speaking to good morning america. >> we know corey is innocent and all that's going to come out in

court. and i think that's going to shock people. >> in march of last year, corey's husband, eric, was found dead at the family's utah home where investigators say he ingested a cocktail containing a high dose of fentanyl. authorities charged corey with eric's death more than a year later, after corey wrote a book to help children manage grief, entitled are you with me? >> she donated half of the books to grieving people. i mean, i don't think she ever made a dime off of it. was it cathartic for her to write the book? i think it was something for her and her boys to remember their dad. now, corey is accused of witness tampering from behind bars, according to prosecutors, jail guards found an unmailed letter in her cell where she allegedly tells her family to falsely claim that her late husband got pills from mexico before his death. >> corey denies any wrongdoing. she says the letter is part of a new book she's writing. corey has not yet entered a plea to the murder and drug charges. later on good morning america, what her brother says about
