to friday, september 22nd. >> yes, a lot to get to. we're going to start with jobina. okay. >> so we're going to talk about our air quality. also get into the haze that i know people are wondering about. when is it going to go away? the best answer sometime this weekend. sunday is going to be our best day. as we zoom in here on live doppler seven, you can see those low clouds. we have some fog that we're dealing with this morning around the coast, specifically around san francisco. and also in the east bay as well around berkeley, emeryville, a little bit of oakland as well right now. temperatures are really comfortable. you're starting in the 50s for the most part, low to high 50s, excluding just a couple little spots. you see novato checking in there at 45 degrees for your day planner. it's going to be in the 50s as i just talked about. then we're going to creep up into the 70s inland 60s around the bay 78 and then drop back down to 68 inland. and for the bay it's going to be around the 50s, 60s, low 70s throughout the day. and then the coast is going to be pretty cool. seven day forecast

here as we wrap up. so autumn starts tonight at 11:50 p.m. and then tomorrow and sunday, it's going to be a really beautiful and comfortable weekend. nice and sunny. then we'll have some chance of some showers into monday and tuesday and we'll talk about that a little later in the week. but in terms of traffic, i do have some things i want to bring in for you. so we're going to start with this closure that will impact people in the south bay for sure. caltrans roadwork, a 56 hour full closure of northbound 87 between 85 and 280. so that's going to start tonight at 9 p.m. and then end on monday at 5 a.m. believe it or not, the metering lights are on at the bay bridge toll plaza. they flipped on at 541. and of course, we will let you know if a backup starts there. coomassie. >> thanks, jobina. more foot patrols monitoring parking lots, even bait cars. san francisco police say they have deployed a number of tactics to curb the issue of car break ins. but is it working? and if not, what else can be done? abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez live at fisherman's wharf with one of the hardest hit places for break ins. gloria

>> it is. and that's why they are vowing to increase patrols here. san francisco city leaders had a hearing yesterday about the car breaking epidemic and one of the things that was discussed as part of their plan is more warning signs. now, let's take a look at these numbers right here. san francisco police say there have been more than 15,000 car break ins so far this year. now, that is down about 500 at this time. last year. but the number is still very concerning. supervisor dean preston is calling for a coordinated response across all city departments to cut down on car break ins. >> in my opinion, on the path to reducing car break ins cannot rely on any one strategy to the exclusion of others. we want people to be able to come to san francisco and not have to worry about this. but that ain't going to happen overnight. san francisco police say they are making progress every day with

37 arrests made so far this year. >> connect to car break ins. they have added more officers in neighborhoods where break ins are happening and they're using bait cars to catch thieves. but police say there are challenges such as current policy not allowing pretext stops, such as pulling cars over for no plates . and sfmta says they are working on a pilot program. and so they would update the parking meters to have warnings, reminding people not to leave their belongings in their cars. live in san francisco, gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thanks, gloria. in san francisco, mayor london breed says public safety ambassadors will be expanding their routes, starting on thursday. breed says the ambassadors will be going to clement street and park presidio. the program deploys retired police officers and supports merchant corridors across the city. ambassadors are meant to be friendly faces to help provide directions and to act as crime. deterrence >> san francisco organizers are getting ready to hold the biggest international event in

the city in decades. the asia-pacific economic cooperation summit, or apec, is in less than two months, and nearly 30,000 visitors are expected to attend, including heads of state, ceos and foreign journalists. city leaders believe san francisco is the perfect place for apec. >> yes, i think we're ready. i think san francisco is a great place to hold our apec with our large asian population. i've heard the number of $50 million of direct economic impact to the city. >> hotel managers say dreamforce, which brought in 43,000 people, was a stepping stone for the bay area economy. they expect apec to give it another boost to ease safety concerns. thousands of extra local, state and federal officers are going to be in the area. the summit runs from november 11th to november 17th. now to a pivotal deadline in the autoworker strike. >> the work stoppage could expand this morning unless, quote, serious progress is made in labor negotiations. abc news reporter justin finch tells us about the growing economic concerns. >> this morning. the united auto

workers union awaiting its next steps. >> i'm ready to do whatever my president says. if president sean flynn says it's that plan, i'm ready. >> uaw president sean flynn warning that if there's no serious progress in talks with ford general motors or chrysler and jeep makers stellantis by noon eastern time today, the strike will expand to new facilities. we'll go. we'll go. >> we'll. >> nearly 13,000 uaw members walked off the job one week ago at targeted plants in michigan, missouri and ohio, calling for a cost of living adjustments, a return to worker pensions and 40% wage increases. >> we are offering an incredible an unprecedented increase. all they want is for everyone to make $300,000. that's not sustainable. >> all three auto companies saying they've been in negotiations with the uaw as recently as thursday. as the rhetoric surrounding those talks

escalates. >> i think that you're seeing those media exchanges intensify and that will only continue as the parties, as the uaw ratchets up the tensions. >> meantime, stellantis ford and gm have rolled out short term layoffs for some non-striking auto workers. the union currently paying members on the picket lines, $500 a week amid growing concerns in the auto industry and beyond about the consequences of a long term strike. >> once you lose the labor that you've had to lay off or maybe even terminate. good luck getting it back in this labor market. the white house says it appreciates the uaw and the automakers remaining at the negotiating table, as some economic forecasts show. >> even a ten day strike could be devastating, costing the us economy more than $5 billion in losses, including workers wages . justin finch, abc news, washington.

especially around sausalito, san rafael, and also for emeryville , oakland and a little bit of berkeley, too, just right along the coastline there. so we are going to have some onshore wind tonight that are going to move some of that smoke and haze out of the way that we've been experiencing, which is why we still have a spare the air alert in effect for today and tomorrow and especially sunday. we should be much better off. you see, resting in the 50s for the most part. now our highs today, we will still experience those hazy skies and low 80s further out into the east bay and then low 70s and then even 68 degrees in san francisco. further down into the peninsula, 60 as well. so checking out our day planner here for the most part, it's going to be very comfortable. it'll certainly be sunny. and if you are a part of those sensitive groups, just make sure to stay inside and protect yourself from that air, at least for one more day. now, bringing in our traffic graphics here, because i do want to let you know what's going on in terms of traffic, because we have a couple of spots to point out for

messaging and marketing and statements that are made publicly to potential customers , patients that are lies, that are deceptive. >> yesterday, california attorney general rob bonta says he filed the lawsuit in alameda county against a group of pregnancy centers called real options. obria and anti-abortion group heartbeat international. bonta says abortion pill reversal or apr, is an unproven and experimental procedure.

during apr, a pregnant person takes high doses of a hormone to reverse the effects of the abortion pill. in response to the lawsuit. heartbeat international says it is not yet been served the suit and says one study shows an 80% effective rate for apr. arrowhead water is being ordered to stop using some of the natural springs it's relied on for more than a century. after eight years and dozens of hearings, the california water board approved a cease and a cease and desist order. the order limits the amount of water bluetriton brands. the company that owns arrowhead, can take from the san bernardino mountains. local groups claim it never had the right to take the water in the first place. while the trust resources of the people of california were depleted over the last hundred years, bluetriton and its predecessors and interests were raking in profits and misrepresenting their right to the water in strawberry canyon. bluetriton argues it took water from the mountains. since before water

haze, which i will certainly get to a little later in just a few minutes, because we want to spend some time on that and show you exactly what it's going to move out of the way. but as we progress throughout out the day, you're going to see your temperatures increase into the 70s, barely reaching 80 a little further out into the east bay. and some onshore winds are going to help move some of that smoke out of the way tonight. it's also the autumnal equinox. so that means autumn begins tonight at 11:50 p.m, right as the sun rays are directly over the equator. so spooky season is here. we are claiming it this morning. so excited about that one. and also just, you know, to get a little cozy. all right. checking in on traffic now because we have a couple things to point out to you. a live look right now at the richmond san rafael bridge. it is packed for people that are traveling in the westbound direction on. we do have a report of it looks like at least a stall on the bridge. so heads up to you if you're traveling in that direction at the bay bridge toll plaza, though, nice and clear, despite the metering lights slipping on at 541. so you're not seeing

much of a slowdown there. it is a bit slower, though, once you hop on the bridge itself, you can see as you travel in the westbound direction, you're looking at about 13 minutes. reggie and kumasi, thank you. >> jobina car break-ins are a prevalent problem here in san francisco. and now we're learning thieves may be targeting drivers who forget to curb their wheels. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is live at fisherman's wharf with the story. what's that all about? gloria yeah, well, reggie, police say that the victims of these car break-ins tend to be tourists. >> and officials say they are pretty easy to spot. they usually park in tourist areas like fisherman's wharf where we are right now, and they tend to have luggage in their vehicles. also valuables. also, they tend to have out of state license plate and another thing that a lot of tourists tend to do, they don't curb their wheels, which of course, us locals know that we should do because of our hilly environment out here. san francisco leaders met yesterday in a hearing to discuss combating car break ins. san francisco police say there have

to hear that attention is even being paid to the issue. as th mta says, they are working on a pilot program to update parking meters. >> so they would have warnings to not leave any valuables in your car. and the sfpd says that officers are working to break apart these groups that are committing the break ins. they say one group can be responsible for dozens of break ins in just one day alone. live in san francisco, gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you, gloria. nearly 140 alleged criminals are off the streets in oakland this morning as a part of a huge us marshals service initiative called operation north star three. so this operation took place in 20 cities across the us and in total, nearly 4500 fugitives were arrested in oakland. the arrests were for homicides, assaults, sex offenses, robberies and weapons. an investigator is underway after

two people died in shootings at a car service center in albany. it happened yesterday morning at the toyota of berkeley service center and vestigators say a man shot and killed a woman who worked there and then had a shootout with police when officers arrived on scene. >> officers entered the building located a victim, encountered a suspect, and in exchange of gunfire occurred. >> we were told multiple officers from the berkeley police department opened fire. the suspect died at the scene. it's not clear if or how the suspect and victim knew each other. there's now a domestic violence task force in san mateo county. >> five women have been murdered there this year. the task force's goal is to save lives and strengthen response and support systems. systems in the county. all five homicides this year in san mateo county have been the result of domestic violence. that's not counting the mass shooting in half moon

bay. the task force is made up of survivors advocates law enforcement and various officials that the window of time for victims and survivors of domestic violence for when they want to seek help is very it can be very small. >> and so we need to make sure that they have the support needed when they are seeking help. >> domestic violence impacts an estimated 10,000 people in san mateo county every year concern signs are growing on capitol hill over a possible government shutdown. >> infighting among republicans is holding things up in the house of representatives, who've now started their weekend for the second time this week, they failed to muster the votes to begin debating a defense spending bill. there are nine days left to get a deal done and house speaker kevin mccarthy is facing pressure from hard line conservative members to drastic cut spending. >> this is a whole new concept of individuals that just want to burn the whole place down. that doesn't work. look, i know it's

an obstacle, but i find it as a challenge and you're going to solve it. >> house democrats and senate democrats. senate republicans and the white house have all worked together to come up with a plan to fund the government. but it's house republicans who want to shut it down. and so it's time that they join the rest of us and choose competence over chaos. >> another sticking point is funding for ukraine as the white house announced another funding package republicans would like to see more accountability. >> two adults are dead and dozens of students hurt from a bus crash near new york city yesterday. the bus was carrying 40 students and four adults from farmingdale high school to band camp when it overturned and went down a 50 foot ravine. the school bands director and retired teacher are among those who are those who died. all of the students on the bus were taken to a nearby hospital, one student recalls the bus rolling over multiple times and

tomorrow, a focus on cleaning up the state's coast, its california coastal cleanup day. >> this happens every year before the winter rains come. so that trash doesn't wash into creeks, drains or into the ocean. more than 50,000 californians will be cleaning up more than 1 million pounds of trash in three hours. if you're interested in joining and you want to find a cleanup near you, you can go to coastal cleanup. georg you don't have to participate as part of an organized cleanup, though. you can just go out and do it on your own. a program in detroit is prompting more young teens to become professional pilots. the tuskegee airmen flight academy teaches kids 14 to 19 how to fly . it offers flight instruction and ground classes leading to a private pilot license. the academy is free, and it targets young people of color who are underrepresented in the pilot profession. and it carries a legacy of the tuskegee airmen, a group of black soldiers who trained as pilots during world war two. after the army corps was forced to admit black americans. as one teen at the academy this year describes his experience.
