outside from our camera at the exploratorium here in san francisco. no changes are literally in the air as we are about to get some relief from that haze. good evening. i'm stephanie sierra. we begin with the weather and moisture that's actually on the way. spencer is tracking the latest. how's it looking? >> well, steph, we are about to get the first rainfall of the fall season and it's going to be really good for us in two ways. it's going to move some of that stagnant air out, thus giving us better air quality and it's going to act to reduce the chance of wildfires. so here's the forecast animation starting at midnight tonight or 12 a.m. tomorrow, you see that system up

in the pacific northwest. that's producing rainfall for western washington state and western oregon and northwestern california. excuse me, but on monday, late monday afternoon, we expect a little frontal system to sweep through the bay area, producing some light rainfall. it won't hit all parts of the bay area, but it will bring us cleaner air. we expect rainfall totals to be generally 1 or 2 hundredths of an inch for most locations that receive any measurable rain at all. there will be higher totals farther north, closer to ukiah. so once again, beneficial rain in many ways. here's the forecast animation. actually the forecast headline is partly cloudy skies tonight and tomorrow. better air quality for the next few days and chance of early autumn rain monday into early tuesday morning, i'll have the complete accuweather seven day forecast in a few minutes. >> steph spencer thank you. nice to see the relief fr the haze you can monitor air quality in your neighborhood with our online interact live tracr. you can take a look right on your screen. it's on abc7

news.com and we've put it right on the homepage to make it easy to find out. well, it's an event that's bold, full of costumes and can be best described as only in san francisco. the folsom street fair begins tomorrow and is expected to draw the biggest crowd not seen since the beginning of the pandemic. nick. abc7 news reporter tara campbell explains the event is a chance for people to express themselves. >> the party is already getting started. tens of thousands of people clad in leather expected to descend on san francisco's south of market neighborhood sunday for the folsom street fair, celebrating its 40th year. >> it's about the freedom of expression, freedom of being themselves. >> lux monteilh is the owner of the san francisco eagle bar, and he says businesses are expecting a big boost this year, hoping to put covid and m-pox in the past. >> the businesses really needed it's going to take a long time for us to recover, but we feel that right now is the moment that everything can start

ramping up. >> and he says people are once again flocking to the city for folsom. >> i see that there is a lot of travelers from all over the place. people are coming back to san francisco to visit. >> i can be myself out in public , which is not something that i always get to do in dallas or in texas. >> finding acceptance here while lgbtq plus people are under attack across the nation with more than 500 bills taking aim at the communities rights. >> and this is one of the few places in the world that i myself i've seen that it really is a melting pot. a young person, an older person, a leather person, a not leather person, a trans gay and everything. >> i grew up here, so this doesn't this is all just normal. this is love. and people being themselves. >> what's it meant for you and your own journey to have this safe place like that? everything thing i wouldn't be who i am without it. >> it gives me a lot of hope that we're on the right track and that as long as we keep

fighting and educating people on like we're not here to promote hate, we're here to spread love. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. and the east bay. >> today marks the first ever martinez pride event. there were speakers, performances, vendors, education booths, food and activities for everyone at the martinez waterfront. >> yeah, we lose so much. what we. but we gain so much more here. um, i can honestly say that i can weather any storm because i am who i am today. >> the event was run solely by volunteers. the rainbow community center was this pride's main sponsor, and was supported by the city's mayor with a $2,500 cultural grant. the center is asking the public for donations for its ongoing support to the lgbtq, lgbtq plus community across 19 contra costa cities, and we'll be seekingmorf continuing the martinez pride event in years to come. well, governor gavin newsom vetoed a

bill that would have required judges to consider whether a parent approved of their child's gender identity when making decisions on custody and visitation. the author of the bill has a transgender son and says she's disappointed by the veto, hoping to give voice to trans kids and have an impact on their mental health. newsom says existing laws already require considering of health and safety and these types of decisions in the south bay. three pedestrians are recovering from injuries after being run over by a driver in san jose. it happened at alum rock and stuart avenues at around 2 a.m. sj pd reports the driver appeared to intentionally hit the victims, then left the scene before officers arrived. a motive for the hit and run is still unknown. well happening now, a highway in the south bay is shut down thiend. the northbou lanes of highway 87 in jose closed last night between julian street and highway 85. crews are working on a major lane resurfacing project

, but the closure is expected to run through five monday morning. another closure is set for the weekend of october 20th when the southbound lanes will be repaved . well, new details now about a sideline shakeup at a san jose high school. our media partners , the mercury news reports willow glen, high school coach oscar cabello was suspended for the rest of the season. san jose unified says it's because of a video showing what they call assault of behavior between him and a parent volunteer. officials say the incident took place during a game at leland high school last friday. they say the video showed the coach appeared to have made contact with the parent who was holding game yard markers after repeatedly warning him not to record football plays with his phone. crime and public safety were top of mind today as oakland residents met with the mayor and acting police chief. the meeting today follows a deadly shooting in the upper rock ridge neighborhood last night. police say they've made an arrest, but as abc7 news

reporter cornell bernard says, city leaders and neighbors continue to be frustrate ated. >> i'm shaken up on my saturday right now. jose ras just learned about a deadly shooting in his upper rockridge neighborhood. >> oakland police say a berkeley man was shot and killed friday night on broadway near lake temescal. police arrested a man at the scene for the killing. it's oakland's 92nd homicide of the year. >> we need the police to do their work, their job. none of this would have happened. that's all. that's a bottom line. it comes down to the police. there is no policing in oakland, at least right now. >> you put the connotation, a negative connotation. that's where we live. we're one oakland and it should be loved by all. >> oakland mayor xiang tao got some pushback at this community meeting she hosted at castlemont high school in east oakland. >> we all need to step up in order to take care of all the ills in the city of oakland. >> the mayor says preventing crime is topping her agenda. she

says this fall, the city is adding 300 security cameras citywide and more police foot patrols. >> just this past week, we've announced that we're doubling the number of officers that you will see visibly walking around in the business corridors to include a downtown in rockridge, temescal, montclair, the lakeshore area. >> we ask acting opd chief darren allison if foot patrols can really prevent theft, robbery and other crimes as we deploy resources in a meaningful way. >> i think it does have a deterrent effect. i think it also brings a community connection to your officer, particularly in the commercial corridors. it builds relationships. >> the police is one element towards what public safety is and, you know, having more foot patrols to protect the businesses does act as a deterrent. >> but jose rad wants more action and accountability from his city when it comes to public safety. >> it comes down to the police every year saying next year is going to be better when is it going to arrive in oakland?

>> cornell, bernard, abc seven news. in the berkeley hills screams to call 911 led police to the scene of a homicide near overlook road. >> a neighbor reported hearing people screaming for help. officers arrived shortly after noon to find a woman stabbed several times in the chest. our media partners, the bay area news group, reports police learned that the suspect had chased a man who had been at the house to a nearby home. he was then stabbed along with a woman whom police say was a bystander . the suspect fled the scene in a car and was later arrested by berkeley police. they say the attack was not random. new developments in hollywood now. deadline is reporting that the writers guild and studios are in the final phase of negotiations and lawyers are working through the fine print. this comes on the fourth straight day of talks directly between the wga and the ceos of the four major studios. the deal, which the studios are calling their best and final offer, would end the nearly five month long writers strike that

started on may 1st. once the wga contract is finished, the studios next step is to make a deal with the actors union, which will present a new set of challenges. the united auto workers are also in the midst of a historic strike and soon to join the picket line. president joe biden after a deadlock with automakers. general motors and stellantis. the union expanded the strike yesterday. the workers of 38 distribution locations across 20 different states are walking off the job. >> we're only 5% of the cost of the vehicle, and we fell woefully short and woefully behind in the last ten years. the money is there, so every four years they come up with a new reason of why we can't get compensated correctly. and we're not accepting any more bad deals. >> the other part of this strike is looking hopeful as ford and the union both agree they're making good progress and are serious about reaching a deal. now, biden is preparing to make his appearance next week. still

camera upgrades, new colors, and even a new usb-c charger. well new at 11 to protest the recent spike in crime in oakland, close to 200 businesses will take part in a citywide strike. the goal is to send a clear message to city hall. abc seven news reporter answer hassan spoke to two store owners in west oakland who say they understand the challenges the city faces. but come tuesday they will be closed. >> i did not do business, was steady saturday night at salam halal market in west oakland. but owner ali shami says this year has been tough. three robberies in the past five months. >> i used to have the atm machine and they broke in the store three times and night time. like for 3:00 and they just folks in the atm machine. >> and on tuesday he's shutting down his store to join a citywide strike. 200 businesses have pledged to close down to protest the spike in crime in oakland. >> you know, even if the crime is not hitting my store here in other businesses is bad. you know, oakland is beautiful. we

the local community together with a dazzling display of nostalgic cars, all kinds of retro vehicles were spotted cruising down el camino tonight. and according to san mateo pd, an estimated 4000 cars were in attendance last year. wow. an organizers are expecting a similar turnout tonight. yeah, i've got to say, spencer, some nice rides there and some nice weather for the nice rides. >> it's kind of crisp and cool out there. yeah as it should be. on the first full day of autumn. right >> exactly. >> beautiful night, 58 degrees in san mateo right now. so not bad. perfect. yeah. so we've got some approaching rainfall. should i tell you about it? it's going to be beneficial in a couple of ways because it's pushing out the haze. that was part of our spare of the air condition today. and right now, as you see on live doppler seven looping image skies are mainly clear, but there are some spotty shower activity offshore and 1 or 2 little scattered showers may hit the coastline during the overnight hours. right now, the wind is generally light to calm, except right here in san francisco, where we have 18 mile

per hour winds at the surface. and as far as the 24 hour temperature change is concerned, it's a couple of degrees warmer in some bay area, some bay area and some north bay locations. right now than at this time last night. but south and east of the golden gate, it's a couple of degrees cooler than at this time last night. here's the view from emeryville. looking back along the bay bridge towards san francisco. you see off in the distance some thin clouds near the coastline, but it's otherwise mainly clear, 56 degrees here in san francisco right now. we have upper 50s at oakland and mountain view, 61 at san jose and mid to upper 50s at palo alto and half moon bay. nice view from mount tam at this hour of the night looking down onto the bay and parts of san francisco and we see again some thin clouds off in the distance there. but skies are mainly clear across most of the bay area right now. it's 56 degrees up north at santa rosa, 52 in novato, napa, 57, mid to upper 50s at fairfield, concord and livermore. one more live view from our rooftop camera looking across the quiet embarcadero.

these are our forecast headlines . partly cloudy skies tonight and tomorrow. better air quality will be with us the next few days and there's a chance of early autumn rain late monday into early tuesday morning. for tonight, the overnight conditions will look like this, some passing high clouds and developing low clouds near the coastline and a spot or two of drizzle near the coast. maybe some patchy drizzle will make it onshore as well. but by mid-morning tomorrow, skies will be mainly clear. it'll be a dry and mild day overnight. low temperatures will be generally in the mid to upper 50s and then tomorrow as highs 63 at half moon bay, 67. san francisco, oakland 69 most inland locations in the east bay and north bay will be in the mid to upper 70s which is around the seasonal average for this time of the year. up in the north bay, a little cooler than average with lows in the low 70s. and here's another look at our forecast animation starting 10:00 tomorrow night, storm in the pacific northwest producing rainfall in western oregon and washington and a frontal system will sweep down a weak one into the bay area late monday into

was a crisis is developing along the southern us border with a flood of migrants arriving primarily from venezuela. >> the homeland security secretary met today with the president of honduras to discuss ways to reduce the flow of migrants. abc news reporter lionel moisi with a look at how authorities are responding to the number of people showing up at the southern us border is on track to surpass previous monthly totals, according to customs and border protection data. >> border patrol made more than 181,000 apprehensions along the southern border in august, up from more than 132,000in july. mexico rko's biggest railroad company resumed operations after it temporarily halted trains after it said so many migrants were hitching rides that it was unsafe to move families. many with young children climbing on board, tossing belongings on the

train, handing up small children. the biden administration, in authorizing an additional 800 troops, be sent to the border to help deal with the crisis in the city of el paso only has so many resources, and we have come to what we look at a breaking point right now. el paso's mayor says the number of migrants has escalated faster than his city was prepared for, saying more than 2000 were looking to come across saturday alone. >> we've had conversations with mayors from other cities that were looking hopefully to be able to coordinate with them. >> migrants are being bused from texas to cities across the country, including los angeles, denver, chicago and new york. >> every individual that boards one of those busses is going voluntarily. he they they sign a form stating that they're going voluntarily to the destination of their choice. >> many of them are coming from venezuela. president biden offering temporary protected status to nearly 500,000 venezuelan already in the us, allowing them to legally find

continue to move inland and is expected to move past richmond, virginia, by tomorrow morning. well, this is another wild story out of florida, except this one did not star florida man. no. instead, it was florida boy. a sheriff's deputy in gainesville got quite the shock when he pulled over a stolen vehicle. and guess who was behind the wheel? a ten year old. and he wasn't alone in the young boy was caught along with his 11 year old sister in their mom's car. talk about double trouble. apparently the duo drove over 200 miles away from home because they were upset. their mom took away their electronic devices. well, that's one way to get grounded. we're told mom has not decided to press charges. well, one state over now in georgia. president jimmy carter and his wife, rosalynn, made a surprise appearance today at a peanut festival. the couple rode down the street in an suv. surprising festival goers who did not know they were coming. in a sweet

surprise, the former president turns 99 next sunday. he entered hospice care in february. jimmy and rosalynn carter have been married for 77 years, making them the longest married presidential couple. even through the pouring rain, tens of thousands gathered in support of a global movement and some big name musicians. the global citizen festival was held at central park in new york city. abc news reporter stephan kim has the story on how this concert is working to end extreme poverty. it was k-pop fever firing up the crowd in central park on this raw, wet, chilly night with stray kids revving it up to get things going and jungkook from bts hitting that next gear. >> i've never even seen jungkook before and i started crying. >> it's absolutely insane. it's been so much fun seeing people that i never thought i would see live like stray kids and jungkook and dipping back into

william shatner and evan mcgregor are also among those expected to make appearances. the convention runs through november 24th through the 26th and will be held at the moscone center. the force is strong in san francisco. all right, in the north bay, the wine grape harvest is off to a late start. it's all due to a cold, wet spring, which delayed ripening. and now with rain in the forecast, many vineyards are looking to speed up the process. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has more from wine country. >> i'm really happy with the way the my crew has gone through here and balanced this canopy. >> it's a busy week for steve letson, a fifth generation winemaker in kenwood. i'm up at 3:00 in the morning getting people organized and i'm out in the vineyards checking fruit and stuff. it's harvest time for many white grape varieties. most of the picking happening overnight to keep the fruit cool . >> we've picked a day last week . it's a small block up in mountain terraces. it's just incredib. we only make 50 cases

of an incredible wine and so now we're looking at chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. >> steve says the 2023 harvest has been delayed. 2 to 3 weeks after a cool wet spring which slowed grape ripening. and now there's more weather challenges ahead. all the smoke in the air from wildfires up north. not a huge concern to steve and his crew because the particles are so high in the atmosphere. but rain in the forecast is a different story for grapes still on the vine. >> our red grapes, cab, merlot, all the reds that won't really bother them that much. that's not going to do anything but white grapes. what can happen, especially if you have a tight clusters get the or some mildew bunch rot and stuff like that in there. >> the approaching rain is accelerating the picking of the grapes. normally at this time of year we're we're in the 80s and even in the 90s in mid september. >> so that's been a concern. it's kind of stalled the ripening process. >> brooks painter from city winery in saint helena says his priority is harvesting white grape varieties at the label's vineyard here in the anderson valley, which could see three

quarters of an inch of rain in the coming days. >> last thing you want is a heavy rain right at the end of harvest when we're essentially ready to pick the grapes. >> i've been doing this my whole life, ever since i was a little kid, steve says. >> as farmers, you have to pivot with changing weather conditions, and he believes when the harvest is done, they'll be something worth toasting to. >> as far as the vintage quality, i think it is going to be one of the best. just incredible. >> and kenwood, cornell bernard, abc seven news. >> well, speaking of the wet weather, spencer is tracking some of it headed our way this week. >> yes, a little bit. of course, it seems to be diminishing as it gets closer, but there is some on the way stuff for sure. here's a look at overnight conditions as we see a little bit of an increase in clouds after midnight. overnight lows will be mainly in the mid 50s. then tomorrow, partly cloudy. partly sunny skies, highs will range from low 60s at the coast to low 70s around the bay to upper 70 inland. now we skip ahead to the forecast animation. looking for that rain that steph was telling us about. it will be
