fuentes and will start now with a quick look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen good morning. >> good morning zach. it is pretty cloudy out there but those clouds are going to thin out the air quality is improving and we have a cold front. we're tracking live doppler seven showing you a little rain beginning to fall in extreme northern california, but the low is going to even miss extreme northern california. it's going to be more up in the pacific northwest. so low clouds this morning that will peel back and bring us partly cloudy skies. but notice the air quality, not quite there yet in the east bay , south bay and livermore. it's going to take some time for that to improve throughout the day. but from mt. tam, you can see that that stable atmosphere with the marine layer there, 58 downtown and it is 60 in san jose and all the clouds there with a little sun trying to peek through at the oakland airport. 54 santa rosa, 60in concord. and we'll look for a partly cloudy sky today, 6070s getting breezy . >> zack lisa, thank you. happening today, thousands of people will pour into san francisco for the folsom street

fair. the event is expected to draw a large crowd not seen since before the pandemic. abc seven news reporter tara campbell talks to local business owners who say the fair could not have come at a better time. >> the party is already getting started. tens of thousands of people clad in leather expected to descend on san francisco's south of market neighborhood sunday for the folsom street fair, celebrating its 40th year. it's about the freedom of expression, about freedom of being themselves. lex montell is the owner of the san francisco eagle bar, and he says businesses are expecting a big boost this year, hoping to put covid and m-pox in the past. >> the businesses really needed it's going to take a long time for us to recover, but we feel that right now is the moment that everything can start ramping up and he says people are once again flocking to the city for folsom. i see that there is a lot of travelers from all over the place. people are coming back to san francisco to visit. >> i can be myself out in public , which is not something that i

be at eighth and folsom streets with the fair will take place between eighth and 13th streets in san francisco soma neighborhood. over in the east bay, the city of martinez held its first ever pride event. speakers, performances, vendors and other activities helped mark that milestone at the martinez waterfront. volunteers put the event together. the rainbow community center sponsored the event with the help of the mayor's $2,500 cultural grant. the center says it will seek more funding in hopes of making pride a yearly event for the city. well governor newsom has vetoed a bill requiring gender identity to be considered in custody battles. he argues politicians could use it as a strategy to diminish the civil rights of vulnerable communities. the governor says existing laws already require consideration of health and safety in these types of decisions, says california state senator scott wiener responded to the veto, saying newsom's decision was a tragedy for trans kids. community members in oakland are frustrated with how the city is handling issues related to crime and public safety. they made that clear at

a meeting with the mayor and acting police chief following a deadly shooting friday night. officers say they did make an arrest. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard tells us how the mayor is responding. >> i'm choking up on my saturday right now. >> jose ras just learned about a deadly shooting in his upper rockridge neighborhood. oakland police say a berkeley man was shot and killed friday night on broadway near lake temescal. police arrested a man at the scene for the killing. it's oakland's 92nd homicide of the year. >> we need the police to do their work, their job. none of this would have happened. that's all. that's a bottom line. it comes down to the police. there is no policing in oakland, at least right now. >> you're putting the connotation a negative connotation. that's where we live. we're one oakland and it should be loved by all. >> oakland mayor xiang tao got some pushback at this community meeting she hosted at castlemont high school in east oakland. >> we all need to step up in order to take care of all the ills in the city of oakland.

>> the mayor says preventing crime is topping her agenda. she says this fall the city is adding 300 security cameras citywide and more police foot patrols. >> just this past week, we've announced that we're doubling the number of officers that you will see visibly walking around in the business corridors to include a downtown rockridge temescal, montclair, the lakeshore area. >> we ask acting chief darren allison if foot patrols can really prevent theft, robbery and other crimes. >> as we deploy resources aces in a meaningful way. >> i think it does have a deterrent effect. i think it also brings community connection to your officer, particularly in the commercial corridors. it builds relationships. the police is one element to what public safety is. >> and, you know, having more foot patrols to protect the businesses does act as a deterrent. but jose rad wants more action and accountability from his city when it comes to public safety. >> it comes down to the police

after it said so many migrants were hitching rides it was unsafe to move families, many with young children climbing on board, tossing belongings on the train, handing up small children. the biden administration authorizing an additional 800 troops be sent to the border to help deal with the crisis. the city of el paso only has so many resources, and we have come to what we look at a breaking point right now. el paso's mayor says the number of migrants has escalated faster than his city was prepared for, saying more than 2000 were looking to come across saturday alone. >> it had conversations with mayors from other cities that were looking hopefully to be able to coordinate with them. >> migrants are being bused from texas to cities across the country, including los angeles, denver, chicago and new york. >> every individual that boards one of those busses is going voluntarily. they may sign a form stating that they're going voluntarily to the destination of their choice. >> many of them are coming from

venezuela. president biden offering temporary protected status to nearly 500,000 venezuelans already in the us, allowing them to legally find work. >> they want to work. they want to contribute to the american experience and american dream. >> new york city, which has been overwhelmed by increasing numbers of migrants for months and will soon receive two more busses that left el paso saturday, updating its policy on city run facilities, issuing a 30 day notices to some adult asylum seekers to transition to alternate housing to help lessen the strain on the city's shelter system. lionel moise, abc news, new york. >> new this morning, nurses at ucsf medical center are responding to a hiring freeze, saying it's impacting their safety at work at the parnassus campus alone. they say nurses and workers have reported more than 30 incident of workplace violence since may. the unions chief nurse representative issued a statement. it says, for months our attempts to warn management about the

consequences of the hiring freeze and short staffing have gone unheeded. and now keeping patients safe too often means putting ourselves in harm's way. nurses plan to hold a rally tuesday to demand improved staffing and workplace safety. abc7 news has reached out to ucsf for a response and in the berkeley hills, three people stabbed in a group of attacks saturday afternoon and the first incident police found a woman who was stabbed multiple times in the chest on overlook road. officers say they received multiple reports about a person with a knife chasing someone down the street at. she is the only victim who was killed in the attacks. the suspect was arrested. in the second incident. a man and woman were also found with stab wounds in the same area to the woman was taken to the hospital. officers say that suspect tried to get away and led them on a chase, but they eventually caught up with the suspect and arrested him in the south bay. three pedestrians are recovering from injuries after being run over by a driver in san jose. it happened at alum rock and stuart avenues at around 2 a.m. saturday. san jose police reports the driver appeared to

intentionally hit the victims, then left the scene before officers arrived. a motive for the hit and run is still unknown . and drivers passing through the south bay will have to d with the major highway closure for aittle longer. the northbound of highway 87in san jose are still clo. this is between julian street and highway 85. crews are working on a major lane resurfacing project. the closure is expected to run through five monday morning and another closure is set for the weekend of october 20th when the southbound lanes will be repaved. all right. let's get a check of the weather with lisa. >> all right. good morning to you. we have a little bit of sunshine trying to come out here. temperatures in the upper 50s and we'll get a little more sun throughout the day. the air quality improves and there's still a cold front to talk about . early season rain, maybe not so likely. i'll explain in coming up. >> thank you, lisa. also next, san francisco is no longer the most expensive city in the bay area and you can take your guess which east bay community costs the most to buy a house. and

presidential couple. while happening today, the celebration continues in san francisco's chinatown. it is day two of the autumn moon festival. well, organizers are promising nonstop entertainment, delicious food, moon cakes, lion dancing and so much more. the moon festival dates back to more than 3000 years. it's to give thanks to the moon for a bountiful harvest. this year's going to be a little different here. organizers are hosting a barbie and ken, look alike contest at 3:30 p.m. before the famous white crane dragon parade at 445. and lots going on here in the bay area. a meteorologist, lisa arjun, is tracking the forecast for the many events that we have happening. it's brightening up out there. >> we're seeing some blue sky. it's been awfully gray. we've been tracking the air quality that continues to improve, but definitely getting in on some sunshine and we will see a mixture of clouds and sun, but a good deal of sun out there. there is also a cold front that we have been tracking. day after day. and this system here, the energy moving up into the pacific northwest as an atmospheric river and extreme

northern california, a couple of inches of rain. but beyond that, it does fall apart. it will be influencing our weather here for your monday and a look at live doppler seven right now. and you can see the holes in the overcast out here. so definitely looking brighter in parts of the bay. and temperatures, though, have been certainly on the cool side all week long. we're not going to change that air quality. the greens represent the good air quality, winning out. but notice still some moderate air quality from the east bay to san jose down along santa cruz. and it's going to take the rest of the day for this to clear out. here's a look at our smoke forecast, where we go through the rest of the afternoon into the evening hours and certainly going in the right direction. but you can see how some of this here just gets a little bit hung up. the breezy winds will be kicking in in throughout the afternoon. out of the south. and there's a look at some sun for our friends. the sea lions. there they are in the gray for all of the morning long. now. it is certainly

looking a little bit brighter out there, 58 downtown, 60 in oakland, in san jose, 60 one half moon bay and the golden gate bridge, mostly cloudy. a few peeks of sun there and temperatures from the mid 50s. santa rosa novato was 60. fairfield and sunny skies in concord and livermore. so emeryville a great start here but we'll get into a sunny finish with some high clouds. so partly cloudy for most of us and looking at the showers mainly in the north bay and it's an evening event for tomorrow. so we'll get into more sun for your monday. it'll be breezy though and then dry and seasonal for the rest of the week. that's the rest of the month as the clouds pull back, you'll notice that we've got some sunshine throughout the afternoon, a few high clouds and then looking at the increasing clouds for monday . so partly to mostly cloudy skies for monday. and then there is the front. but already the first half of the day, dry. and then as we get into the second half of the day, also dry conditions. and then look what happens. it just falls apart there into monday night. so

we're going to paint the bay area with maybe trace amounts, 8/100 up in santa rosa. and of course, this is the time of year that we get the offshore flow and our warmest temperatures. so not a whole lot of rain, but the temperatures staying on the cool side for monday. obviously with the clouds and the rain on the way. but for tuesday, we warm up and wednesday return to some 80s. so we'll be looking a little bit more seasonal. upper 60s oakland, 72 and fremont 75. in san jose and the accuweather seven day forecast still a little haze in the atmosphere but things are brightening up air quality improving and then tomorrow just a few raindrops for the coastal hills of the north bay getting maybe a 10th or 2/10 and then some of those 80s returning inland. so it looks pretty nice for the rest of the week. but the breeze kicking up all week long as well. >> all right, lisa, thank you so much. all right. just ahead, a music festival for charity over the weekend. global citizen working to help those in poverty. we have how they plan to do it next.

some special attention over the weekend. saturday marked the 39th coastal cleanup day. abc7 news was at the berkeley waterfront in aquatic park for this weekend's cleanup and people across the bay area and the state took part in the effort. volunteers are helping protect waterways and coastlines and several cities and they're backed by multiple agencies, environmental groups and nonprofits. i think, you know, we share a common space. >> it's up to us to make sure the space is sustainable, habitable. but also, you know, we are good stewards of our land and we set a good example for people around us, especially young people, so that this tradition can be continued through the years. >> and this comes every year before the winter rain. so that trash won't wash into creeks, drains in the ocean. organizers say more than 50,000 californians helped clean up 1 million pounds of trash. great work. the ninth annual girls aviation day was held at the reid-hillview airport in san jose over the weekend. the worldwide event hopes to attract more women to the aviation

for after a five month walkout. hollywood studios and writers guild of america are reportedly very close to a deal. abc news reporter jacqueline lee is in los angeles with a look at where things stand. >> the strike that has left hollywood paralyzed for nearly five months may finally be coming to an end. according to the hollywood reporter. the writers guild of america and alliance of motion picture and television producers concluded a full day of negotiations with attorneys reviewing the studio's. so called best and final offer. >> everybody's on pins and needles to see how this is actually going to resolve. if this actually means the end of the strike. so it's a big moment in hollywood, according to multiple media reports, the offer made saturday suggested that studios had taken steps in areas pertaining to residuals, minimum staffing, ai and data transparency, all key facets of the writers guild agenda. >> when do we want it? now more than 11,000 members of the wga on strike for nearly five months

overnight confirming they met for bargaining yesterday and will meet again today. and now to the united auto workers strike. president joe biden is expected to join the picket line in michigan this week after union members recently expanded their strike to more locations across 20 states. biden joining striking workers underscores political opportunity for him as he tries to ring in votes for the 2024 presidential election. ford and the union have said they're both making progress in negotiations and are serious about reaching a deal. the union members say they're committed to getting what they deserve. >> we're only 5% of the cost of the vehicle and we fell woefully short and woefully behind in the last ten years. >> the money is there for. so every four years they come up with a new reason of why we can't get compensated correctly. and we're not accepting any more bad deals. >> the strike against the nation's three largest automakers, general motors, ford and stellantis, is about to enter its second week in the east bay. hundreds of businesses

will protest the recent spike in crime. this week. their goal is to send a message to oakland city leaders. abc seven news reporter unser hassan spoke to two store owners in west oakland who will take part in the strike . >> i also do business was steady saturday night at salam halal market in west oakland. >> but owner ali shami says this year has been tough. three robberies in the past five months. >> i used to have the atm machine and they broken the store three times and night time like 4 or 3:00 and they just folks in the atm machine. >> and on tuesday he's shutting down his store to join a citywide strike. >> 200 businesses have pledged to close down to protest the spike in crime in oakland. >> you know, even if the crime is not hitting my store here in other businesses is bad. you know, oakland is beautiful. we have to keep it safe. you know, police have to do something. the mayor have to do something. >> xiaomi has done his part, installed cameras, got rid of the atm. but he points to the additional cost of doing business in oakland due to crime like the rising cost of insurance, most people they scared, you know, because the

>> this is the first and it will not be the last. and if it takes us to go to sacramento to raise our voice to further politicians, to hear our voice, we will do it. >> in oakland, hassan, abc seven news. >> right now, much of the east coast is getting drenched by the remnants of ophelia. it's now a tropical storm bringing heavy rain and flooding. that storm made landfall along north carolina early saturday morning as a strong tropical storm. half a foot of rain falling in some areas along the beaches. roads flooded in greenville, north carolina, which was hit with heavy rain. at least one driver had to be rescued after getting stuck along a waterlogged roadway and power knocked out to thousands, even in places further inland. the remnants are now moving north along the jersey shore. drone video, lots of video has been showing the storm surge and more flooding. it just comes up so fast you don't realize it. >> you could be walking down the street and then you come back ten minutes later and the whole street is flooded. so it's a lot of water. and hopefully we don't get people having their cars stuck. >> officials say they expect more outages as the wind and

asteroid piece could give the give us answers about earth and our solar system. abc's gio benitez reports on the osiris-rex and its incredible mission to bring that sample to earth this morning. >> osiris-rex speeding back to earth after a 4.4 billion mile journey through space. and just moments ago, celebration inside lockheed martin's mission control in colorado. gma cameras there the moment osiris-rex from the edge of space 63,000 miles away successfully released a capsule with precious cargo on board a piece of an asteroid, 4.5 billion years old. missions like this and telescopic observations help us characterize these kinds of objects. the mission will conclude seven years of research worth over $1 billion to capture samples of the asteroid bennu, which scientists hope will help us understand the origins of life on earth. there are about nine ounces of the asteroid in the capsule.

>> we're trying to learn what planets are made of. where did the water and the organic molecules on the earth and other planets come from? and here's here's some samples of that that are going to come back to the earth to be studied in laboratories all over the world for decades studying asteroids is critical for hundreds of scientists around the world, in part because of the fear that one could collide with our planet. >> remember that scene in the hit movie armageddon zero barrier is about to be breached . nasa scientists predict a slim 1 in 2700 chance that the asteroid bennu said to be as big as the empire state building could strike earth far, far into the future. in the year 2182. now, the osiris rex spacecraft, which stayed at the edge of space after releasing the capsule, slingshots back into the deep unknown for its next mission. a sample from another asteroid, apophis. >> that was. abc's gio benitez

reporting on that touchdown for science. the sample landed in the utah desert at 752 this morning. that's our time right now. crews are trying to recover the capsule. and once they do that, they will send it to nasa. so scientists can start analyzing the asteroid piece. so some exciting science going on in space back here on earth and also right here in our abc seven studios with meteorologist lisa arjun, who's been tracking our forecast. >> yeah, and you know, a lot going on for september. there's an atmosphere river aimed at the pacific northwest coast and you can see the moisture headed up to the north of us. a couple of inches of rain here. the good news is the fantastic news is fire ending. rain for oregon. extreme northern california. we will get just a little piece of a dissipating front for late tomorrow. here's a look at live doppler seven. you can see the cloud cover all over the north bay. certainly sunny in our inland valleys and also along the peninsula, breaking up. and we are looking at much better air quality for some of us from

the north bay over onto the peninsula, east bay is looking good, except for around oakland and also parts of the south bay, santa clara, it's going to take towards the rest of the day for everyone to see much better air quality towards capitola. santa cruz. but as we look at the loop throughout the day today, yes, certainly going in the right direction. things will get back to normal and we'll see some sun for your monday as well. even though a cold front is knocking on our door. here's a look outside where it is awfully gray in the city, staying at 58 all morning long, 60 at oakland, 59, mountain view, also 60. san jose upper 50s, palo alto, partly to mostly cloudy here at the airport and we'll look for temperatures today to still be below average but pleasant with some breezy winds. upper 50s novato, napa and we've had some pockets of cool 40s in the north bay zephyr cove looking at a nice afternoon. temperatures in the 60s getting into the 70 next week. so you can see the partly cloudy sky here and that will be

the rule throughout the morning hours here and then we'll get into more sunshine and looking at some showers in the north bay late in the day. the rest of us not so much. and then a dry and seasonal and breezy rest of the week. so here's a look at the cloud deck as it continues to pull away at about 11:00. then we're mostly sunny. the high clouds filtering in throughout the afternoon. we'll see more of that into your monday. so mostly cloudy on your monday. and there's the front, a couple of inches, maybe up towards three inches. but look what happens as it pushes into sonoma air. it really falls apart. and even marin county maybe just that orographic lift helping us wring out a little bit of mist and drizzle along the coast and a couple hundredths up towards sonoma county. so if we look at the rainfall potential, you'll notice it has really backed off. so only a couple hundredths up towards santa rosa. the rest of us, yeah, maybe even just a little drizzle. so the week looks good stopping this at friday. another system coming in and the backside side of that we
