>> yes, it is his moment. >> yeah. >> i'm happy for him. yes. good morning on this monday, september 25th. yes. and welcome back. >> thank you. hi, friends. now, i want to ask you, are you still going to go to vegas to see him even though he's playing? probably, yeah. okay >> yes. do it twice. >> why not? it'll be great. good morning. we do actually have some rain in the forecast later on today. let's show you live doppler seven this morning. you can actually see that front that is in northern california right now, just approaching eureka. and what will happen it looks like there's a lot of moisture with this front right now. you can see all that green, that yellow on your screen. but as it moves south over the next 24 hours, we'll lose a lot of that moisture, but we'll still get a little bit of light rain, especially in the north bay. right now starting out with temperatures, we're mainly in the 50s. it's a little humid out there, but you'll find those temperatures will rise into the 70s later on this afternoon. here's future weather, partly cloudy skies throughout the day. any chance of rain is really going to hold off until after sunset and there you can see by seven approaching healdsburg by eight, 911, you could see it's still very patchy in the north

bay. but as that front moves south, it's really going to fall apart. so it's a mix of sun and clouds today. temperatures mainly in the 70s. we'll take a look at how much rain you can expect where you live coming up in about eight minutes. let's check in with jobina and see reduced traffic this morning. >> thank you, drew. good morning, everybody. so we are going to zoom in to the caldecott tunnel right now where we're following a crash. it's going to be westbound 24 bore for at least one lane is blocked in this area. so a heads up, if this is a part of your commute right now because it is in the commute direction, we are seeing a minor slowdown pop up already on our sensors there in emeryville. live picture here showing you 8-80 headlights in the westbound direction. they're beginning to fill in at the san mateo bridge. both directions are moving at the limit. no problems to report there. tracy to dublin is going to be our slow spot at the moment. 37 minutes for the drive time. carmassi they should be in. >> a new developments this morning. nearly five months have gone by and now a tentative agreement has been reached to potentially in the writers strike in hollywood, abc seven news reporter lena howland live in los gatos with more on how tv

shows and movies might be impacted. lena well 146 days in and the writers guild says they have reached a tentative agreement with studios to end this historic strike. >> and this impacts writers not just in l.a. and around the country, but right here in los gatos too, as its home to netflix headquarters. now, while the terms of this deal were not immediately announced, we do know the three year contract still needs to be legally finalized before a vote by writers guild leadership expected as early as tomorrow. once approved, the contract will be sent to union members for a ratification vote the wga reportedly made progress on some of the most contentious issues, including viewership, residual payments for writers and minimum staffing guarantees on shows. once the deal is ratified. late night and daytime talk shows could return within days. but it will still take weeks to write scripts for narrative shows and even longer for those shows to enter production. >> my phone is blowing up with joy, people thanking each other,

people that are so excited that they're going out right now. >> and but before any of your favorite shows return, the actor's representative represented by sag-aftra need to agree on a contract before they get back in front of the camera. right after the tentative announcement was made. sag-aftra currently in the middle of its own strike, put out this statement saying in part, while we look forward to reviewing the wga and amped tentative agreement, we remain committed to achieving the necessary terms for our members. now, although the wga has suspended picketing, writers are not returning to work until authorized by the guild. live in los gatos, lena howland, abc seven news. >> lena, thank you. developing news now from washington dc is a critical week on capitol hill as fears grow of a possible government shutdown. lawmakers have until this weekend to reach a deal. jobina has more. now on

the impact the shutdown could have, including right here in the bay area. >> thank you, reggie. yes the us government has six days to pass the spending bill. congress remains at a standstill right now. house speaker kevin mccarthy says he has a short term plan to fund the government through october. essential workers would not be impacted, but other jobs would be furloughed until the shutdown ends. some gop house leaders are against funding any government agencies without massive spending cuts. this means possible holdups for tsa at airports. disney master funding would be at risk, and military troops and law enforcement agencies will be forced to work without pay. president biden is hoping to avoid a potential crisis funding the government is one of the most basic responsibilities of congress, and it's time for republicans to start doing the job. >> america elected them to do. >> if there is a shutdown, it will go right into fleet week, which is scheduled to start on october 2nd here in san francisco. the association tells abc7 they have nothing to report

yet, but they would let us know if there are any changes. this will be the largest government shutdown in us history if house republicans don't budge on a deal. >> thank you, jobina. another long time restaurant in san francisco is closing its doors at the end of the week. after 14 years, barbacoa will have its final service on friday. this is the more easygoing sister restaurant to perbacco on california street, both right next to tadich grill. barbacoa owner says a lack of foot traffic downtown is to blame. and it's just one of many closures. similar losing the struggling storefronts and office buildings across the city. abc seven news reporter suzanne van dives into the effects. >> if you've ever dined at barbacoa in downtown san francisco, you'd see amazing meals like this. it's a casual italian restaurant focused on food and wine and service. but it's closing this week after 14 years. >> the business is not sustainable. >> humberto gibon owns barbacoa and the restaurant next door. perbacco gibon says the little

sister restaurant is unsustainable because they're just aren't enough people in the financial district. >> we saw a decline in traffic. we saw a decline in business in general. >> businesses in the financial district and across the city have been hit hard by the loss of office workers. according to the latest data published in july from commercial real estate firm cbre, the office vacancy rate in san francisco was 31.6% at the end of the second quarter of 2023, before the pandemic. the office vacancy level in the city stood at just 4. >> that's offices without a tenant. ted egan is the chief economist for the city and county of san francisco. even the office space that does have tenants is not very full. we're seeing data that suggests it's 40 to 50% full on a given day compared to 2019, which means that the foot traffic is about half of what it is. san francisco, downtown has the lowest office occupancy at the moment that any other city in the united states and i know

that that the city and also the downtown community is trying to do something. >> but i just don't don't see it happen anytime soon. uh- employers have to maybe put their foot down and say, hey, you have to come to work. city leaders say business has improved for local restaurants since the pandemic ended, but things are still a long way off. >> we're still lagging most other cities, we still have a long way to go in san francisco, suzannephan abc7 news. >> in the east bay 200 businesses in oakland are going to be taking matters into their own hands tomorrow. >> they're going on strike, shutting down their stores for all or part of the day to protest retail crime. according to our abc7 news data team burglaries are up 44% in just the past 12 months compared to the annual average over the last three years. robberies are up 26% compared to that same time am. local store owners tell us the safety and financial fears have made it very difficult to do business in oakland. >> you know, even if the crime

is not hitting my store here in other businesses is bad. you know, oakland is beautiful. we have to keep it safe. you know, police have to do something. the mayor have to do something. >> the latest notable case of violence was friday night. a man from berkeley was shot and killed right by lake temescal. mayor shengtao says it's going to take time for her crime fighting strategy to take effect. >> as your mayor, for i know for sure what we're doing and we're doing everything that we can to protect our businesses and our residents. and so, again, all of this implementation, it is slowly ramping up. >> as for the business strike, she tells local merchants she hears their concerns. murtaugh recently announced oakland is adding 300 security cameras citywide this fall and doubling the number of police foot patrols in the main business corridors in the north bay. >> the potential rain is welcome news to cal fire crews. they say october is the most destructive month in california for fire and they're still hard at work.

prevent fires from spreading. >> we're still doing fuel modification work. we're not resting on our laurels at all. those fires can start and with the winds that we get in the north bay, can escalate very quickly. an and we want to avoid that. if we can. so we need our community. your viewer ship to maintain that vigilance until we really get into some really wetting rain. >> wildfires in southern oregon and far northern california have led to poor air quality in the bay area this past week. so they are reminding people the threat is still there. for more information on fireproofing, your home and your property, you can go to ready for wildfire org . >> and when it comes to our air quality, we have improving conditions. you probably noticed that over the weekend we had clear skies that smoke that haze from last week is out of our atmosphere thanks to a bit of a cold front that pushed a lot of that smoke away from the region. so today, tomorrow and wednesday , we're breathing easy. we have good air quality across the region. another reason why we're tracking a system that is

bringing some heavy rain to the pacific northwest. you can clearly see this area of low pressure. here is the cold front . and that cold front is now approaching eureka this morning. it will bring some significant rainfall to eureka, even redding. but as the front moves south, it will lose a lot of its moisture. but we are still anticipating some light showers, mainly in the north bay. and after sunset tonight. so looking at rainfall over the next 24 hours, i think the best chance of finding wet weather likely in the north bay and along the coast as we head into the south bay and the east bay. i think it's going to be tough to find some significant moisture. it's not out of the question. we could see a sprinkle here or there, but the best chance really does lie in the north bay after sunset tonight. here's a live look from the exploratory camera. we do have partly to mostly cloudy skies out there. here's how the day shapes up. it's just a blend of sun and clouds. and then after sunset, there's a chance of a shower in the north bay. we'll take a closer look at that rain chance. also show you that 70 forecast coming up in about nine minutes.

they're happening at the furnaces and satellite health care facility, as caregivers say they are striking over unfair labor practices. and neither company has commented on the strike. >> we're just two days away from the next republican presidential debate happening in simi valley. the chair of the rnc is calling on the frontrunner, former president donald trump, to attend. ronna mcdaniel says not only do other candidates want to

hear from trump, but voters do, too. the former president is sitting the debate out just as he did for the first debate instead of wednesday's debate in southern california. trump is scheduled to speak to striking uaw workers in detroit. after more than a three year pause, student loan borrowers are bracing for payments to resume next month. interest on student loan debt has started accruing again and payments on those balances are scheduled to start october 1st. it's been a year of political back and forth with the white house forgiving $400 million of student loan debt only to have it later overturned by the supreme court. emily irwin, senior director of advice at wells fargo, recognizes the difficult position this puts borrowers in. >> understandably, this is something that, even though it's been a pause, it felt permanent because it was so long. but it is coming. >> irwin adds that borrowers should prepare to at least meet the minimum loan payments

hour by hour for you on future weather. show you what we're talking about. so here's today. this is noon. we're dry. it's just a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day. the sun goes down and then we'll start to track some of that moisture by 7 p.m. it's around ukiah, cloverdale, mainly light in nature. by about 9 p.m, some of that moisture is approaching santa rosa. and then in the early morning hours tomorrow, this is 330 in the morning, not out of the question. we could see some spotty showers around the city, maybe parts of the peninsula. but then by the sun getting up here tomorrow, any of that moisture is out of here. and we are looking at a very bright day on tuesday. so the best chance of finding some rain after sunset tonight in the north bay and along the coast, a mix of sun and clouds. today, we'll find temperatures making their way mainly into the 70s later on this afternoon. then overnight tonight, we'll track those light showers moving through parts of the region and we'll have that moisture mainly measured in less than about a 10th of an inch where it falls. here's a quick look at the accuweather seven day forecast. we'll track those showers after sunset tonight. lots of sunshine

major studios this morning. there's a tentative deal after nearly a five month walkout. this deal still has to be ratified. and even after that's finished, your favorite shows won't be coming back just yet. sag after actors are still on strike. >> number two, congress is heading into a critical week for avoiding a government shutdown. lawmakers only have until this weekend to reach a deal if there's no agreement, it would be one of the largest shutdowns in us history. >> number three, about 200 businesses in oakland say they are going on strike tomorrow. they're shutting down stores for either all or part of the day to protest retail theft and crime. owners say safety issues have made it difficult to do business in oakland. number four, after 14 years, the restaurant barbecoa in san francisco is closing its doors at the end of this week. >> the owner says a lack of foot traffic downtown is to blame. its final day of service is friday. >> and number five, we have some rough surf coming our way. a high surf advisory is in effect late tonight through tomorrow evening for waves, possibly 14

for their sins comes ten days after rosh hashanah, which marks the new year. millions of jews around the globe will be gathering at synagogues to pray for a good year ahead. >> a piece of asteroid that's 4.5 billion years old will be flown to the johnson space center in houston today. nasa scientists are hoping it will give them some answers about the beginnings of life on earth from the edge of space, the osiris-rex spacecraft release a capsule containing that asteroid yesterday for hours later, it landed in utah, where recovery teams carefully bagged it up. the seven year long mission captured samples of the asteroid bennu studying asteroids is critical for scientists around the world, in part because of the concern one could collide with our planet. nasa scientists predict a slim one. in 2700 chance the asteroid bennu could strike earth in the year 2000. 182 bennu is said to be as big as the empire state building. >> there's something like 30,000 asteroids that we know of just

we have partly cloudy skies. it's a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day. we're dry during the daylight hours. it's after sunset. we'll track those showers in the north bay. we'll go hour by hour on future weather. show you that front moving through in about eight minutes. let's check in with jobina and see her doing traffic this morning. >> thank you, drew. good morning, everyone. we are seeing a mass of backup begin now. if you are traveling towards the caldecott tunnel in the westbound direction, expect significant delays there due to a crash that we're following on westbound 24 right at 13. you see that spot. but then speeds dropped to around 11mph and it is extending all the way into orinda right now. so that's not a good situation. we'll let you know when it clears. but so far no estimated time elsewhere, though. you're nice and smooth in terms of traffic. san jose looking at 87. no problems to report there or at the golden gate bridge. but i want to let you know that you should check the schedule if you take caltrain, the agency is making some changes starting today. the schedule changes are happening for a handful of reasons, including to better match up with bart's new schedule for

front. and now we're finding fresh air today, tomorrow and for the foreseeable future. we are seeing temperatures right now. this morning, we're mainly waking up with numbers in the 50s and we are tracking, believe it or not, some light rain in the forecast next 24 hours. here's live. doppler seven along with satellite. we have a cold front that is now approaching eureka. there's a bit of moisture that will fall across parts of northern california by the time it makes its way into our neck of the woods. it will have a lot less moisture. but we are anticipate in the north bay after sunset tonight, we will get some rain out of this system . here's future weather for much of the day today, it's just a mix of sun and clouds. we are dry during the daylight hours, we'll reach temperatures into the 70s later on this afternoon and then once the sun goes down, then we'll start to track the rain moving into the four cast by 7 p.m. it's approaching healdsburg by 9 p.m. it's in santa rosa. and then we'll track that front. really just falling apart in the early morning hours of tuesday. so rainfall estimates the best chance of finding any light moisture, mainly in the north bay and along the coast as the system
