be back on the job. >> we're going to begin with president biden joining autoworkers on the picket line. terry moran is outside a ford plant in michigan. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. for decades when workers went on strike, presidents, republican and democrats, tried to stay above it all, not taking sides, urging negotiations and a fair deal. but today, at this ford plant where workers have been on strike for 11 days for better pay and benefits, joe biden will break that tradition. this morning the president will join striking autoworkers on the picket line. joe biden will be making history. there is no record of any president walking a picket line until today. but in the united autoworkers expanded strike, biden said he stands with workers. >> take a look at the significant increase in salaries for executives and growth in the industry, they should benefit from it.

>> reporter: but the white house insists that the details of any deal should be left up to the parties. a week and a half into this strike, those talks are inching closer as the uaw fights for a 40% wage increase and better benefits. democrats are increasingly competing for union votes against republicans like donald trump who will address a crowd wednesday. out on the picket lines, workers are holding strong. >> we're looking forward to getting something fair negotiated. >> reporter: but for some, like mack hall and his sons steven and chris, two generations of autoworkers on strike together, this fight is about something bigger than politics as usual. >> biden and trump should stay home. i think we have enough millionaires and billionaires trying to determine what we get. you don't understand. >> reporter: mack hall and his sons also tell us they are grateful for any support. but their point is, this isn't political. for the workers, it's not about politic.

it's not about politics. it is about getting a fairer balance between workers and management at hugely profitable companies, and not just in the auto industry. michael? >> you're right about that, terry. it's not political. it's all about their livelihoods. we're going to turn to the tentative deal to end the bitter writers strike that put hollywood on hold for months. kayna whitworth is in los angeles with the latest. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: good morning. so today union leadership will be voting on this deal. if it's approved, it will then go to the more than 11,000 members of the guild. many can return to work at least in some capacity during this remediation process. if this deal is fully approved, some of the first shows taken off the air will be among the first to return, including the late night talk shows. terms of the deal are supposed to be released later today. the reported agreement includes increases in royalty payment for streaming content and guarantees

that artificial intelligence will not encroach on writers' credit and compensation. i'm told the guild made huge gains in the residuals area, and that they added a bonus structure tied to subscribers of the individual streaming services. when i asked about the studio terms regarding ai, i have told by a source, michael, that it was a primary ask and again they made extraordinary gains there. >> negotiations for the 65,000 film and tv actors on strike, that resumes this week as well. >> reporter: yeah, michael. i'm told sag afra can use these negotiations as a blue print of their own. i spoke with the chief editor at "variety." he said initially the actors in the studios weren't as far apart as the writers were, meaning hollywood could be back up and running in some six to eight week. but, michael, overnight a potential wrinkle in this. the union now voting to authorize a strike against video game companies citing some of those same concerns specifically

ai. michael? >> all right, kayna, thank you very much. george? we're going to washington where the government shutdown deadline is coming fast. house republicans holding up a deal with keep the government open. senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is tracking it all on capitol hill. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: good morning, george. four days until a government shutdown and there's still no clear path forward. caught in the middle of all this political infighting, millions of government workers and contractors now bracing to go without pay. this morning house speaker kevin mccarthy ramping up the pressure on a handful of far right republicans to make a deal to avert a government shutdown. >> there's always a handful of people who want to stop anything. >> reporter: mccarthy can only afford to lose four republican votes and so far several have rejected his latest proposal to keep the government funded while beefing up border security. >> this is a rare opportunity for us to stand together, for us to hold the line. >> reporter: if congress does not act, 4 million federal workers could lose pay. can you assure them this will be

averted? >> i'm doing everything i can to make sure it doesn't. >> reporter: half of the workers are in the military. families like andy in jacksonville, florida. the coast guard veteran and her active duty husband left scrambling. >> it's infuriating that this can't be resolved in a way in which the military families aren't held hostage. it's frustrating. it's very frustrating. >> reporter: and while government employees could get back pay, contractors would not including cafeteria staffers like willie joe price. do you worry that you won't be able to pay your bills by the end of the month if congress doesn't act? >> oh, yeah. yes. i worry about that. a whole lot. i'm trying not to cry. i'm trying not to cry. >> reporter: price has worked at the library of congress cafeteria for decades, faced with yet another shutdown.

but the senator who faced indictment on corruption charges before and successfully defended himself, is pushing back despite growing calls for him to resign. this morning senator bob menendez fighting for his political life, facing a multicount indictment, accusing him of brazen corruption. >> as i have stated throughout this whole process, i firmly believe that when all the facts are presented, not only will i be exonerated, but i still will be new jersey senior senator. >> reporter: in a dramatic monday press conference, he said he's innocent and urged the public not to jump to conclusions about those damaging images of wads of cash stuffed in a jacket embroidered with his name, gold bars and a new mercedes. >> for 30 years i have withdrawn thousands of dollars in cash from my personal savings account which i have kept for emergencies and because of the history of my family facing confiscation in cuba. >> reporter: the senator did not address how he got that new car and why he suddenly had gold

bars after a trip to egypt. menendez, chairman of the foreign relations committee before he was indicted and forced to step down, is charged with selling state secrets to the egyptian government. >> he made sensitive, nonpublic u.s. government information to egyptian officials and otherwise took steps to secretly aid the government of egypt. >> reporter: the senator whose wife was charged as well is also accused of taking bribes to help two new jersey by men fend off criminal even democrats openly criticizing him. some calling on him to leave the senate. >> the situation is quite unfortunate, but i do believe it is in the best interest for senator menendez to resign in this moment. >> reporter: political forecast is challenging. new jersey democratic governor, members of congress from his own state and three senate colleagues now calling for menendez to step down. he said he's not going anywhere.

michael? >> definitely a lot of pressure on him there. thank you for that. going to turn to the baton rouge police department under federal investigation over abuse allegations. some officers are accused of humiliating and even beating detainees at a warehouse. several lawsuits have been filed. senior national correspondent steve osunsami has details. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, michael. some of the people held and who were allegedly abused in this warehouse weren't even charged with anything in the moments leading up to the point where they were detained. the fbi is now investigating whether police abused their power. federal investigators are asking anyone in baton rouge who has ever been held by local police and brought to this large white warehouse to call them. officers from a street unit this morning are accused in a federal lawsuit of sweeping police brutality and are seen in these body cam videos plaintiffs say were recorded before and during

their interrogation. authorities were forced to close the facility nick named the brave cave last month after reports of police abuse including a complaint from a 47-year-old woman who said she was sexually humiliated for over two hours in this same room in june and then let go. >> what happened there is unconscionable. she was then strip searched. there was also a visual body cavity search performed upon her. >> reporter: in a federal lawsuit, lawyers for 22-year-old jeremy lee say after this video was recorded the police officers turned off their body cameras then beat him so badly that the local jail refused to admit him until he was treated by a nearby hospital. there he was treated for broken bones and other injuries. >> you didn't read me my rights. >> i didn't have to. >> it doesn't look like anything you would associate with normal policing process. i mean, it looks like something

out of a mob film. >> reporter: police brass have shut down the street crime unit and the officers have been moved to different beats. this same officer who resigned has been accused in a number of other cases where police say he showed excessive force. baton rouge police are calling these cases troubling and say they are working with the fbi and expect more people to come forward. >> okay, steve, thank you very much. we're going to turn to new numbers on how long covid affects millions of americans. data shows last year almost 7% of adults had almost 3 months of long covid symptoms after being infected by the virus. erielle reshef is here with story. good morning, erielle. >> reporter: good morning, george. long covid is a catch all term for those who are experiencing long term symptoms. this can lead to long term health and economic impacts for those affected and on society.

long covid affected 6.9% of adults in the u.s. women more frequently than men. people outside metro areas were more apt to experience long covid. 1.3% of children have ever been affected. but among kids, data shows 12-17-year-olds were most likely to be affected by long covid symptoms. hispanic children have been most affected. as for what kind of help there is now that covid is no longer considered a public health emergency, long covid could qualify as a disability and possibly for social security disability payments. you have to document your symptoms and speak with your health care provider before applying. michael? >> thank you very much, erielle. we turn to the governor of louisiana asking for federal emergency declaration due to a salt water intrusion into the mississippi river. andrew dinmer has more on the situation and how it could impact the drinking water supply. good morning, andrew. >> reporter: good morning, michael. new orleans is facing a potential water crisis. the concern is salt water from

the gulf of mexico could reach water treatment plants near new orleans disturbing the entire water supply in this region. this all stems from drought conditions which have been affecting the bayou since june, according to officials. now the fear is the mississippi river volume will fall to historic lows in the next several weeks leading to intrusion of salt water from the gulf flowing upstream in louisiana. now this flow is expected to impact the drinking water supply for residents and businesses. as a result, the governor is asking the white house for help, requesting president biden declare it a federal emergency. the u.s. army corps of engineers did construct an under water barrier in july to delay this salt water intrusion but a few days ago salt water began to move past it. work will will resume in hopes of slowing down this ingress of salt water. linsey? >> andrew, thank you. now to "monday night football." demarco morgan is here with all the highlights. demarco, another kelce/swift

incident aboard a jet blue flight to florida that sent eight people to the hospital. the plane experienced sudden severe turbulence. victor oquendo has the story from ft. lauderdale. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, george. that plane was headed here when it encountered that sudden severe turbulence. this morning the investigation is under way. it's harrowing moments like these that show just how dangerous a quick jolt of sudden turbulence can be. this morning the latest turbulence incident now investigation leaving eight people injured from this jet blue flight monday. jet blue saying the flight experienced sudden severe turbulence. it was bound for ft. lauderdale where the plane landed safely. first responders waiting, transporting seven passenger and one crew member to the hospital. both the ntsb and faa are now investigating. >> severe turbulence is severe. anything not tied down will get thrown around the aircraft.

including people. it's not always possible for pilots to know where these patches of severe turbulence are. nine times out of ten we do. when we suspect there's something up there and we turn on the seat belt sign that's when you need to sit down and strap in. >> reporter: the faa received 17 reports of severe injuries related to turbulence last year up from 13 in 2019. >> we'll have paramedics coming on board to handle any issues. >> reporter: frightening images on a delta plane from milan to atlanta last month. passengers reported feeling a sudden drop, some being carted off in stretchers. others seen holding ice packs. 14 were injured, 11 hospitalized. >> i honestly thought we were crashing. >> what's the solution? the airplane can handle it. but the bodies inside, when they're not strapped inside, can't. >> reporter: back to the most recent incident.

>> it looks like your application has been complete and needs to be submitted before the end of the forebearance deadline. it is urgent that you return my call prior to when payments resume. >> reporter: the ftc warns scammers are calling, texting and e-mailing borrowers falsely claiming their student loan debt can be reduced or cancelled altogether for a fee. >> they'll tell you they can get forgiveness in a shorter amount of time than might be available. that your payments are going towards your student loan. they might claim to be part of the department of education. turns out those programs or the forgiveness is fake. it doesn't exist. that's typically the case. >> i'm calling about your federal student loan that is now showing you qualify for the loan forgiveness program. and this is through the department of education so it is government funded. >> reporter: as reported by wtvd, transaction network services

says it's monitoring about 100,000 of these student loan spam calls every week. >> we've seen a big uptick in the last three weeks. probably have seen more calls in the last three weeks than we have in the last three months. >> reporter: some big red flags scammers asking you to pay up front for debt relief services, for unknown calls and texts asking for personal information like your ssa log in. >> you want to treat your as your social security number. don't give that out. >> reporter: the ftc says if you do have questions about your student loan payments, your best bet is to reach out directly to your loan servicer. if you don't know who that is, you can fine their information free of charge on student aid.gov. finally, if you get one of though scam calls it' best to hang up before you give out any of your person information. better yet, don't answer the call at all. guys? >> good advice there. elizabeth, are there other

le this morning that perfect fall pumpkin may be harder to find, and some farmers warn their crops have been cursed by the biggest fright of all. the weather. from new jersey to kentucky and all the way down to texas, farmers are battling a whole host of conditions, squashing those perfect pumpkin dreams. >> great pumpkin, where are you? >> reporter: in texas, drought has caused cracks in the soil and has made it hard to grow anything. >> unfortunately, we have seen cracks this big. it is like concrete when it's dry like this. >> reporter: while in paducah, kentucky, that summer heat, followed by too much rain, is ringing in nightmares. paducah seeing 200% of normal rainfall accumulation in the last three months. >> i think last year we had 1 inch of rain in august.

quite a difference. >> reporter: the downpours have turned his gourds ghoulish, only getting 50% of crop. >> we went out probably a month ago. we couldn't hardly find any pumpkins. >> reporter: now he's turning to other farmers for help, supplementing his supply. experts say despite the fright, it's not dire everywhere, especially in illinois, the largest pumpkin producing state in the country. >> we were really concerned early on in the season with the summer, with the drought followed by a lot of rain. but we really are happy to announce overall this is going to be a really pretty good pumpkin season. >> reporter: happy day farms in new jersey, despite a short drought that sent their crops back three weeks, they say their pumpkins are perfect for picking. >> we have an excellent crop. we were worried in the beginning of the season but now the pumpkins are up to size, nice color, firmness, strong shell. everything that we're looking for. >> reporter: farmers say you want to buy your pumpkins the first two weeks of october.

also ahead a word of caution for drivers about so called slider crime. president biden heading to michigan to join striking autoworkers on the picket lines this afternoon, an unprecedented show of worker solidarity by a sitting president. we'll go back to terry moran outside a ford plant in michigan. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. on the 11st day of the autoworkers strike, history will be made. president biden will join striking workers on the picket line. presidents don't normally take sides in strikes, but joe biden has already broken that tradition, coming out last week and declaring support for union demands in this strike and now joining workers on the picket line. there's no historical record we can fine of any president ever doing that. white house officials say that details will up to negotiators. as of now there is no deal in sight yet. and workers are looking for that 40% rate. they say that tracks with what ceo's have gotten in recent

>> it was so fast. >> reporter: surveillance video shows the woman arriving in this houston parking lot where another car pulls up behind her. a man gets out, crouches down and slides into the victim's unlocked passenger door, trying to take her purse. the woman screams, honking her horn repeatedly and the man gives up after a few seconds. >> honestly, it was a fight or flight reaction. >> reporter: police across the country, including in houston and atlanta, have warned of an increase in slider crimes. that's when a thief quickly sneaks into an unlocked car to steal valuables. most cases are at gas stations when victims are outside their vehicles. but the victim in houston says a feature in her car put her in danger. she said the man got inside because her car automatically unlocks when it's put into park. >> i can't watch the video with the sound on because you can

[ laughter ] >> i like the way you think. >> it's true. >> collaboration in person. our next question comes from noah from ft. collins, colorado. when the early excitement of starting the business runs out and motivation seems tlevel off, how do you maintain consumer employee belief in your mpany's product? >> are you really doing something you love? you should be growing with the company. if sor some reason or another the motivation is not there, something is happening where you're more probably doing it for money. when you first started you were probably selling 1,000 units to 1,000 people. now you have 10,000 units, 10,000 people. you're getting a lot back. you have to find ways to grow. if you don't grow, you're

he must have known i was going to come on this morning. it is a good morning america. amazing. >> how has it been, mom? >> amazing. the healing process has come around wonderful. i'm prioritizing my movement practice, getting as much sleep as i can. my husband has been an amazing support. >> i love the word hustler. what does that mean to you? >> i believe we can design our literal or figurative finish lines and listen to that inner voice inside. that's the energy i want to put out in the world. for me hustle isn't red lining, overworking, never sleeping. i think we can bring those self-care practices into our hustle and make it even more powerful. >> you're calling your journal back to school for adults. what does that mean? what do you want people to take away from it? >> this time of year care givers are so focused on little ones. kind of it's a season of reset. i wanted my journal welcome hustlers to be an invitation for adults to get into that same frame of mind. let's own the chapter we are writing and welcome hustler is a way for folks to do that.

and start to assess through that frame work, that lens, what this new chapter, what this new start should look like. >> robin, you have so much going on. i don't know how you make time for it all. what can your fitness community expect from you? >> i will be back this fall. i am still on leave but i am super excited to be back at peloton. personally, i think it's important for us to set and achieve little goals. so for me, getting back on the bike was a big achievement. i'm excited to do witness the team at large. globally. >> do you set goals in terms of your health and wellness and getting back, you know, back to body? i hate to even say that. >> there's a whole lot of grace. it's definitely about focusing on what my body can do rather than what it's looking like right now. it's important for me, also, to feel like myself. to be embodied as a human, as well as a mom. so i'm a hustler, entrepreneur,
