on tonight. the cost to you and me. our abc seven deep dive at 11 is designed to spend a little more time to get you some answers. so we're going to begin on this topic with abc seven news reporter tim johns with more on the effect of these closures. tim. >> yeah, dan, the news of those three bay area closures came as a shock to many after it was announced today. that includes the mayor of pittsburgh who says she found out about that target location closing along with the rest of us. she told me that the city had been in communication with the company and was planning on opening a police substation just across the street to help address concerns fans. on tuesday, target announcing they would be closing three of their bay area stores next month, a location in san francisco, though, one in oakland and one in pittsburgh. the company citing retail theft as one of the main reasons why it is disappointing that, you know, to hear the news today. pittsburgh mayor chanel scales, preston says the closure comes as a shock. she tells me the city has been in contact with target over the company's concerns and has been taking

steps to try and address them. >> we are opening up a police substation right there in the shopping center, as well as our contra costa sheriff department is opening up a training academy right across the street from target. >> soquel's preston says that police substation was meant to open in just weeks. she says she wishes target would have waited to see if the situation improved before deciding to leave. we have seen a downward trend of the theft that's going on in that shopping center. target is just the latest company to close stores in the bay area. recently, a worrying trend, says matt ross, a spokesperson for californians against retail and residential theft. >> what we're doing now is not working for the stores. it's not working for the employees. it's not working for the customers. >> ross coalition works with thousands of businesses around the state. he believes the problem of retail theft won't be fixed until there's greater accountable for those committing crimes. >> and it will go from something that sounds innocuous, like like

a petty theft and may end up leading into violence and that's what these stores are really concerned about. >> back in pittsburgh, the mayor says she worries about what target's closure will mean for her community, especially those who rely on the store for daily items like food and medicine. >> what love to

and there from a bit of a distance, we watched as he walked inside with others. >> after biden flew into moffett field tuesday afternoon when he spoke at a private fundraiser here in atherton tuesday night, a pool reporter there said he criticized republicans and said they need to do their job, saying that a government shutdown could affect military pay, food inspections and cause parks to close the end to a busy travel day for the president. >> he was walking the picket lines in detroit this morning. now he's here in silicon valley. this afternoon, my students actually saw the helicopter flying overhead because we're we're in silicon valley here. >> while the president usually flies from the peninsula into san francisco's crissy field, that didn't happen despite the closures in the presidio. and many believe fog might have been to blame. president biden is set to meet with his council of advisors on science and technology wednesday. they have previously discussed artificial intelligence, so i think he's

what you've earned and you've earned a hell of a lot more than you're getting paid now, uaw members are demanding better benefits. >> a 40% wage increase over four years and a 32 hour workweek. the union says ford is taking the request more seriously than the other two big auto companies , general motors and stellantis . uaw represents nearly 150,000 auto workers in the united states. more labor action to talk about it is now up to the members of the writers guild of america to approve a new contract. the board gave its approval today and declared the strike over. however, it encouraged members to support sag-aftra on the picket lines. wga members also received authorization to return to work starting tomorrow, which means some scripted shows could return to television as early as next week. maybe shows that you enjoy . wga members will vote on the contract october 2nd through the ninth. this will not affect the writers return to work, however, tonight, governor newsom has signed a historic law on

firearms, the first of its kind in the united states. it is what's topping the headlines tonight in your abc7 news to know we know statistically the data bears fruit save lives and reduce gun violence and gun deaths. it's the first statewide gun and ammo tax in the country doubling the federal tax to about 22% depending on the firearm. the tax revenue will pay for more security at public schools and other violence prevention programs. a new challenger for san francisco mayor london breed daniel lurie, the heir to the levi strauss family fortune and philanthropist, announcing today he is running for mayor in the upcoming november election. >> you can't solve of san francisco's problems if you aren't willing or able to challenge the systems that have allowed these problems to fester . and that's why we need new leadership from the outside. meanwhile a new plan in san francisco to get people suffering from substance abuse

matt mehan says his priorities are hiring more police officers for enforcement and deploying technology for about one third of traffic fatalities involve speeding. >> that's why i've been such a strong proponent for speed safety cameras specifically near schools and along corridors where we have a disproportionate number of accidents and injuries and fatalities. >> last friday, san jose police say a man riding a mobility scooter was struck off of fruitdale avenue on monday morning. police say a man was hit and killed at the intersection of willow street and meridian avenue. san jose resident hazel burton tries to avoid walking across meridian because cars are flying by. i just make sure i never park across the street so i don't have to cross that street, burton said. people need to slow down and pay attention. >> i got hit a couple of months ago over by the pruneyard. i was making a u-turn and i got hit by a red light and i had to take off work for six weeks. thankfully it wasn't, you know, as severe as what happened with

these cases. >> the most recent case happened around 330 on tuesday morning when police say a pedestrian was struck and killed off south jackson avenue. a nearby business owner said the incident involved a garbage truck. if we compare the numbers from this year to last, tuesday mornings incident marked the 39th fatal collision and 23rd involving a pedestrian at this time last year. the city had 48 collision deaths, with 26 of them pedestrians. >> i fear our community becomes numb. these are not just numbers or statistics. these are human beings. these are people with with families. >> in san jose, lauren martinez , abc seven news. >> happening tomorrow, meta and mark zuckerberg will unveil new technology. we know the meta quest three is going to be released. the meta quest is a virtual reality headset. virtual reality is one of the latest tech crazes. a number of companies offering products ranging from just a few hundred bucks to several thousand

down. it's now just days away a funding plan, even if short term needs to pass before saturday to avoid key government services going dark today. senate leaders did announce a deal on a 45 day stopgap resolution. it's expected the senate will approve the deal later this week, but it is unlikely to pass the house. house speaker kevin mccarthy is pushing a friday vote for a controversial bill with major spending cuts and a strict border security measure. >> the republicans in the house of representatives refused. they refuse to stand up to the extremists in their party. so now everyone in america could be forced to pay the price. >> in the meantime, mccarthy and some other republicans are trying to push through bills to fund specific agencies. if the shutdown does happen, 4 million federal workers, including military personnel, will be forced to work without pay. seven candidates have qualified for tomorrow night's republican

presidential debate. it will be held at the ronald reagan presidential library in southern california. and the field is slightly smaller than the first debate. former arkansas governor asa hutchinson did not qualify this time. former president donald trump has chosen to skip the second debate and instead will be in michigan meeting with striking autoworkers. back here at home, solano county prosecutor today revealed a new bit of detail about the oregon man accused in a decades old child murder. fred cain was arrested last week, accused of the kidnaping and killing of six year old jeremy stoner of vallejo in 1987. the district attorney credits her department's cold case unit, which reexamined evidence from the boy's autopsy and developed a dna profile that led straight to cain. >> we've spoken with the stoner's. they're very appreciative. obviously it's a big shock. it's nice that hard work pays off and hopefully bringing some a little closure to the family. can't bring

jeremy back. it's absolutely horrible what the family's gone through for the last 37 years. >> authorities say cain knew jeremy and was interviewed by police when the boy disappeared . cain will be transferred to solano county in the coming days for his court appearances. new developments. city city investigators are now looking into the mint plaza pod housing complex. here's what they look like. when we first brought you the story last week, we spoke with one of the tenants about what makes it so inviting. >> i actually pushed off coming to san francisco for a really long time, but it's been absolutely net positive, without a doubt. like just within the first couple of days, i met some of the smartest people i've met in my entire life. so that's the reason i came and that's the reason i'm staying and that's the reason why i'm living in a pod. >> according to our media partners at the sf standard, the city's department of building inspection will determine if developers had the proper permits to build these pods. i founders, technologists, artists and retail workers are currently

it had a rough debut last year, as we reported, that saw issues with crowd control and noise complaints as well. video showed fans pushing through and scaling the barricades. as you can see, it was a bit chaotic. a woman has sued over the chaos, saying she was injured after getting hurt when the crowd rushed to get into the parade site. lawyers for the portola festival respond in court. this year'sl festival will be held on saturday and sunday at pier 80. again a single day ticket will run about $230 and the festival says it is ready for tens of thousands of people expected to show up. we will follow how it goes. new at 11, a new i voice translation is coming to spotify . the company will use san francisco based openai technology to translate podcast pastors voices into different languages. the ai tool is supposed to keep the distinctive speech of the podcaster, but it is in the listener's preferred
