you and me. our abc's seven deep dive at 11 is designed to spend a little more time to get you some answers. so we're going to begin on this topic with abc seven news reporter tim johns with more on the effect of these closures tim. >> yeah, dan, the news of those three bay area closures came as a shock to many after it was announced today. that includes the mayor of pittsburgh who says she found out about that target location closing along with the rest of us. she told me that the city had been in communication with the company and was planning on opening a police substation just across the street to help address concerns is on tuesday. target announcing they would be closing three of their bay area stores next month, a location in san francisco, one in oakland and one in pittsburgh. the company citing retail theft as one of the main reasons why it is disappointing that, you know, to hear the news today. pittsburgh mayor chanel scales, preston says the closure comes as a shock. she tells me the city has been in contact with target over the company's concerns and has been taking steps to try and address them. >> we are opening up a police

substation right there in the shop center as well as our contra costa sheriff department is opening up a training academy right across the street from target schools. >> preston says that police substation was meant to open in just weeks. she says she wishes target would have waited to see if the situation improved before deciding to leave. >> we have seen a downward trend of the theft that's going on in that shopping center target is just the latest company to close stores in the bay area recently. >> a worrying trend, says matt ross, a spokesperson for californians against retail and residential theft. >> what we're doing now is not working for the stores. it's not working for the employees. it's not working for the customers. >> ross's coalition works with thousands of businesses around the state. he believes the problem of retail theft won't be fixed until there's greater accountability for those committing crimes. and it will go from something that sounds innocuous like like a petty

they had the flames under control in about 15 minutes. most of the damage is to the walls in the back of the building along with the roof. the good news here, no one was injured. the cause, though, is still under investigation. tonight, president biden is in san francisco staying at one of the city's most iconic luxury hotels. his day started with union workers in michigan before attending a fundraising event here in the hills of atherton. abc7 news reporter j.r stone was right there tonight as the president arrived at the fairmont. the president joe biden's motorcade on the streets of san francisco tuesday night. >> i see a few secret service agents and i see some state law enforcement people and of course lots of very fine san francisco policemen. when the president comes to town, everything stops. and as we were interviewing that tourist, president's motorcade pulled up to the fairmont hotel and there from a bit of a

distance, we watched as he walked inside with others. >> after biden flew into moffett field tuesday afternoon, he spoke at a private fundraiser here in atherton tuesday night. a pool reporter there said he criticized republicans and said they need to do their job, saying that a government shutdown could affect military pay, food inspections and cause parks to close the end to a busy travel day for the president. >> it he was walking the picket lines in detroit this morning. now he's here in silicon valley this afternoon. my students actually saw the helicopter flying overhead. and because we're we're in silicon valley here, while the president usually flies from the peninsula into san francisco's crissy field, that didn't happen despite the closures in the presidio. >> and many believe fog might have been to blame. president biden is set to meet with his council of advisors on science and technology on wednesday. they have previously discussed artificial intelligence. >> so i think he's being

are hiring more police officers for enforcement and deploying technology for about one third of traffic fatalities involve speeding. >> that's why i've been such a strong proponent for speed safety cameras specifically near schools and along corridor bars, where we have a disproportionate number of accidents and injuries and fatalities. >> last friday, san jose police say a man riding a mobility scooter was struck off of fruitdale avenue on monday morning. police say a man was hit and killed at the intersection of willow street and meridian avenue. san jose resident hazel burton tries to avoid walking across meridian because cars are flying by. >> i just make sure i never park across the street so i don't have to cross that street, burton said. >> people need to slow down and pay attention. >> i got hit a couple of months ago over by the pruneyard. i was making a u-turn and i got hit by a red light and i had to take off work for six weeks. thankfully it wasn't, you know, as severe as what happened with these cases.
