all the police is quite fascinating. >> it would be pretty crazy to see the motorcade made street closures all across san francisco today as people try to steal glimpses of president joe biden and his motorcade today. >> good evening. i'm karina nova . and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. president biden spent this second day in the bay area in san francisco. a meeting with his council of advisors on science technology before heading to several fundraising events. >> abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn joins us live from the newsroom with the details suzanne. >> sarina. dan, this is the president's second fundraising trip in about three months. as planned, he talked about technology with his council of advisors before heading out to meet with some fundraising supporters in san francisco. we saw plenty of people eager to see and hear more from him. our president is here. >> i'm so excited. that's so nice. i hope we get a glimpse of him and his beautiful wife. people visiting san francisco from all over the country got word that president joe biden was in town. >> all the police, secret

service and canines added to the excitement. jane watson is visiting from new zealand. it just so fascinating because we don't have that at home. >> we're a much more modest with our prime minister, oliver lemke and his new wife caught a glimpse of the president motorcade when the president first arrived in san francisco at the fairmont hotel tuesday night. >> we saw it yesterday, yeah, we did see part of it, i think. yeah we were walking back from dinner wednesday. >> president biden met up with his council of advisors on science and technology. they include academic experts and officials from microsoft, google and amd. >> we used to lead the world and i don't know how we can be the safest, most secure and healthiest nation in the world without significant investment in science and technology. >> he talked about the importance of ai as well as expanding high quality health care for every american. >> today, ai is a potential to transform research. thanks to our administration's 15 american technology, companies have already begun to implement voluntary commitments to help

ensure that ai technology is safe, secure and trustworthy before it's released to the public. >> chris mendler, who's in san francisco for a work conference, has a keen interest in ai. i think it's good that he's at least invested in discovering more about ai and seeing where we should head with that. >> that's kind of a big part of where i'm at in the it world and looking at. so it's cool that at least there's interest and hopefully discovery and understanding of how ai can be used and regulated maybe by the government in positive ways. >> afterwards, the president headed to a pair of fundraisers, including this one near china beach. >> we're an important state and you want i'm sure there's a lot of constituents that are important in the in the state. so i'm glad he's spending the time here that he needs to. and president biden wraps up his visit to san francisco this evening and then heads off to arizona. >> he's expected to return to the bay area in mid november for apec. the global economic summit. that will include leaders from 21 different member

economies. live in the newsroom, suzanne fan, abc seven news. >> okay, suzanne, thank you. new details now about the federal trial for the man charged with attacking nancy pelosi's husband, paul david depape appeared in federal court today and abc7 news i-team reporter stephanie sierra was there. she is here with the details. steph? >> yes, the judge discussed the jury questionnaire today and finalized all those questions. this was one of the last hearings. david depape will have before the trial begins in early november. and the judge is confident they will get a jury fast. now, jury selection will begin on november 6th. the judge expects there will be 14 or 15 people selected as either jurors or alternates. from there, the trial will begin november 9th. paul pelosi is scheduled to testify november 13th, and the i-team has learned members of the pelosi family will also be in attendance throughout the trial as well. we also learned speaker emerita nancy pelosi will be named as a witness. now, last october, surveillance and body camera footage showed depape breaking into the pelosi

home and eventually striking paul in the head with a steel hammer. he's been charged with federal attempted kidnaping and assault charges, along with a slew of charges in state court, including attempted murder. but a state trial date won't be set until after the federal trial finishes. and again, that's all happening in november. in fact, the jury questionnaire will be sent out november 1st. and in it , jurors will be asked about their age and occupation. according to the judge, one of the questions will ask whether they've ever worked for a social media company, and if so, which company. they'll also be asked to list the names of the media outlets they regularly watch, watch or read. that's interesting. yeah, i know. to two topics out of what we expect to be many. >> stephanie, thank you. >> well, moving on a road rage investigation leads police in san jose to a whole bunch of illegally manufactured ghost guns. police say their investigation began in august when a driver waved a hand gun at another person. san jose

police say he was later identified as manuel leon valdez . detectives obtained a warrant for his arrest after being alerted that valdez was prohibited from possessing firearms. >> the assault unit, with the assistance of the gun hazardous offender suppression team. our ghost unit served the search warrant at the residence and they located approximately 16 firearms. 15 of those being privately made firearms, which we call ghost guns. >> valdez is currently detained at santa clara county jail and booked for multiple felony gun charges. >> the chp is investigate a brought the morning commute to a standstill. officers received word around five this morning a persoed uat the hospital after being hit by gunfire on eastboundear park boulevard. all lanes of the freeway were shut downor 4 minutes to allow officers to invest. date the victim is expected to recover. >> we're getting a look now at the aftermath of a fire at oakland's rotary nature center.

abc7 news was at the scene near lake merritt earlier today as crews picked up charred debris. you can see it was quite a mess. oakland's fire chief says most of the damage is on the roof and the back outer wall of that building. the inside was largely spared. no one was hurt. that's the good news. firefighters say there are verified reports of homeless activity near the nature center, but the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> we're taking a closer look at target's decision to close three stores in the bay area and what that means to people who rely on target's pharmacy for prescription medicine. abc7 news reporter ansar hassan looks into some of the challenges for customers of oakland store that's closing this target near downtown oakland is set to close by mid-october. >> i'm sad. what about the seniors? i do at home care and she lives right here not too far and i come and take care of all her business prescriptions. everything here, groceries right now. helen walton says filling the prescriptions will be the hard part. >> there aren't many other

options within walking distance as posted. the closest cvs pharmacy is a mile away. >> it's going to be good. it's going to be okay. you figure it out. we're going to figure it out. like they say, everybody google everything. so maybe we're going to google this. >> target says retail theft is the main reason behind his decision to close three bay area stores, including one in san francisco and the other in pittsburgh. if a theft is a big problem in a in a neighborhood, that can be the difference between a profit and a loss. robert chapman wood is professor of management at san jose state university. he says discount drugstores are facing other pressures as well. >> the pharmacy business has gotten has been going through a uh- changes which are not very transparent to ordinary people. a lot of more pharmacy is pharmaceutical full fulfillment is being done by pharmacy benefit managers, usually controlled by the insurance company. according to professor wood, that means insurance

companies are filling prescriptions by mail, which could prove to be more profitable. >> he doesn't know how that may be impacting the current target cvs partnership, but he believes it's putting pressure on large discount drugstores. >> the insurance companies trying to do the fulfillment themselves, that that can be a big problem for the pharmacy article, for the drugstore business. >> we live in corporate america right? so ultimately, everything is driven by a profit motive. >> business professor balaraman rajan at cal state east bay says target can't be faulted for closing, since its primary responsibility is to stakeholders, he adds. but in a city like oakland, facing rising crime and increasing store closures, the pressure falls on the city to do more, such as managing the decreasing number of pharmacies. >> the city can try and take action so that it is more welcoming to these corporates, it's more welcoming to these retailers because ultimately, if there are no facilities out there, you won't have a thriving populace in there. so it is all connected.

health crisis. that's the opinion of 87% of respondents to a poll by the public policy institute of california. interestingly, here, 81% say their own mental health is excellent. only 4% described it as poor. the poll also looked at other concerns, and the big one is lumped together job issues, the economy and inflation. 28% say that is the most important issue facing california right now. >> and less than one hour, the second republican presidential debate gets under way in southern california. but again, donald trump won't be there. abc's tim pulliam has more on what to expect. >> there will be seven candidates wrangling on stage. former vice president mike pence, south carolina senator tim scott, former new jersey governor chris christie, entrepreneur. vivek ramaswamy, north dakota governor doug burgum, florida governor ron desantis and former south carolina governor nikki haley. so if there was a winner on the

debate stage last time around, it definitely was. >> nikki haley. her numbers have gone up about one, 1.5. >> the debate could be critical in determining if many of the candidates will move forward, including desantis for ron desantis. >> what he's going to have to do tonight is he. he's going to have to really try to stand out. his campaign in after the first debate tried to spin in the aftermath that him not fighting with other candidates was actually good for him. but he's actually seeing his poll numbers decrease. >> some political analysts expect the number of candidates to shrink after tonight's debate because it will only get harder to qualify for the next one in november. they will have to receive at least 70,000 donors and four percentage points in national polls, according to the republican national committee. tim pulliam, abc news simi valley, california. >> california governor gavin newsom is weighing in on tonight's debate. and in short, he thinks it's nothing more than a show for donald trump's going to be the nominee, period. >> full stop. it's not even interesting to me. this debate

is quite literally a sideshow. it's just entertainment. it's performance and entertainment. but the real race is around the corner and it's existential and it's time for moral clarity and to understand fundamentally what the stakes are. you've got a guy that lost the election and tried to wreck this country and donald trump, and you've got joe biden that's put us on the path to prosper. pretty within real economic plan, with a real infrastructure plan, with a real strategy to get this country moving again in a whole new level. he's delivered and it's time for us as democrats to deliver for him. >> and while he's critical of tonight's republican debate, he has his own debate coming up. he will face off with florida governor ron desantis at the end of november. >> coming up, highlighting an opportunity to provide a better patient care in the south bay. the gathering to celebrate national latina physician day while calling for better representation in the health care

two over 11 members are currently in contract negotiations with the san francisco unified school district. there demands include higher wages for teachers and more manageable caseload aids for special education teachers. if members vote to authorize a strike, members will then have to vote to allow the union leadership to actually call a strike. >> today, a local hospital celebrated national latino physician day. it's a day co-founded by a bay area doctor in order to raise awareness about the disproportionate disproportionality of low numbers of latino physicians. abc7 news south bay reporter dustin dorsey has more on why representation matters when it comes to health care. >> celebrating hispanic heritage also means highlighting the changes the community wants to see to better their culture and doctors at santa clara valley health care are calling for a change in the number of latino physician in amount, they say, is much too low.

>> while 20% of our population in santa clara county identify as latino, the overwhelming majority of our patients here in this hospital, more than 50% identify as lithium, yet only about 5% of our physicians do. we can do better. >> and this struggle is felt at a national and state level. with 39% of california's latino population only amounting to 6% of the state's physicians and 8% of medical school graduates. in 2021, these health care workers now celebrate national latino physician day on october 1st to bring awareness to these statistics and deliver a call to action to do better. >> we are done being passive. this is a physician shortage crisis. >> the concern these physicians have is that with any relationship, a doctor patient bond requires a certain amount of trust in order to work properly. without that trust, people don't feel safe seeking care. santa clara valley health care's doctor, rachel ruiz, says that lack of trust fuels health disparities. >> there's so much fear and anxiety. you're worried about what the doctor is going to say,

regroup. but what's happening is the wind is blowing. it's gusty right now to 33 in oakland, san francisco, 33 sustained sfo, 33 miles an hour. these onshore winds not really allowing that marine layer to regroup very well. but we do have some low clouds near the coast as we go hour by hour, 6:00 tonight, 20 to 25 mile an hour winds still with us, gusty along the coastline. later on tonight, winds let up inland and then tomorrow morning, they drop off tomorrow afternoon, it'll be another breezy one. but bright skies, as you will notice from our kgo roof camera right now. windy right now along the embarcadero, 67 in the city, oakland, 72 degrees. it was a warmer day for just about everyone. san jose, 76. and right now, palo alto is standing at 77 degrees. the sun is shining in san jose right now as we look at those temperatures. upper 70s, napa, santa rosa, low 80s. fairfield, concord, livermore, you're at 77 degrees and on live doppler seven, you will notice some patchy low clouds right near the coastline

that's going to deepen. it brings us the wet weather possibility. right now it depends on exactly which way it's going to go. some models are bringing it over the ocean and then over california. others are keeping it inland. so stay tuned. but for now, saturday, i would plan on some showers as we head into the afternoon and evening and high elevation snow in the sierra. we're talking about snow flurries above 9000 to 9500ft. rainfall objections right now, these are early estimates, anywhere from nothing measurable to about 15 hundredths of an inch. accuweather seven day forecast, we're going to go with another beautiful day tomorrow. cooler and breezier friday. but look at the sharp drop off in those temperatures only in the 70s. this weekend. inland 60s coast side and we bring in the possibility of some wet weather . certainly will be gusty this weekend as well. and then temperatures will come back up next week, kareen, indian. all right, sandhya, thank you.
