happened just weeks apart. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley martinez. police confirmed to us tonight that the suspect charged in the vallejo case, fred kane, the third, is now a person of interest in the martinez murder case as well. abc seven news reporter j.r stone is in the newsroom with new information that goes back all the way back to 1987. >> it certainly does. dan on the same day that authorities brought suspected murderer fred kane, the third back to california from oregon where he was arrested. he was named a person of interest by another law enforcement agency, tsay. in another case. it's now been more than 36 years since nine year old eric coy was killed after leaving to go to his cousin and best friend's house in martinez , california. >> the boy was brutally murdered just minutes after leaving his house, stabbed with a blunt object for the last two days. >> that play site has been a grim searching zone for police. >> no one was ever convicted of the killing, but now less than a week after prosecutors say they

used dna to link this man, fred kane, the third to the murder of six year old jeremy stoner in vallejo back in 1987. in a authorities in martinez are taking notice. they're working with the solano county district attorney's office to learn more about kane and if he could also be linked to coy's murder. is he an official suspect in the case right now? >> he's a person of interest, lieutenant patrick salomon has spent the last 11 years working coy's case. i left his house on warren street and took a shortcut through the martinez junior high within about 15 minutes, his body was found on the grounds of the junior high. i found that eric coy had suffered multiple stab wounds. kane's family members, who i believe kane lived innez't at that time. >> but say he did live in the nearby east bay town of pacheco . in coy's case, there was a

suspect sketch, but it never amounted to anything. the boy's body was found near this bridge that is no longer even there today, as the area is now overgrown with ivy. as for the case going forward, i'm always optimistic. >> and, you know, maybe some some dna or some sort of biological evidence will exist in the future to reanalyze. but i can tell you, we're not going to stop investigating in this case. the vallejo suspect and martinez person of interest will face a judge for the first time in solano county tomorrow at 130 in the afternoon. >> i have been in contact with several of kane's family members tonight. right. and they are not at all coming to his defense. dan now back to you. >> okay. j.r thanks very much. and if you believe you have information to help provide in this martinez case, let me show you this. as you look at the screen here, this is the tip line for the martinez police department. if you know anything about the circumstance surrounding the killing, you can

in miami, and it will be harder for candidates to qualify for because the rnc has raised fund raising and polling thresholds in simi valley. josh haskell, abc seven news. the future of artificial intelligence took center stage in san francisco today as president biden wrapped up his quick trip to the bay area. >> he met with his council of advisors on science and technology, which includes officials from microsoft and google. the president is talking with tech experts about harnessing the power of ai while also protecting people from the risks. >> ai is a potential to transform research. thanks to our administration's 15 american technology companies have already begun to implement voluntary commitments to help ensure that ai technology is safe, secure and trustworthy before it's released to the public. >> president biden also says he plans to issue an executive order this fall to help ensure the development of ai is responsible. he did not elaborate on specifics tonight.

the president attended to campaign fundraisers in town before leaving for arizona. all right. let's get you ready for thursday and what you can expect from the weather. abc seven meteorologist sandy patel is looking at our 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandy yeah. >> dan it looks nice. tomorrow morning when the sun is coming up. you'll notice there will be some fog and low clouds around those temperatures in the mid to upper 50s by noontime. we're looking at sunshine seconds 70s and at 4:00 pm getting up into the upper 80s for our warmest spots. a lot like today mid 60s coast and once the sun gets ready to set those temperatures will fall. we have some big changes ahead. we're bringing in the storm impact scale in the middle of september. i'll let you know when that rain arrives this weekend. a look at that timeline and whether it'll impact your weekend plans coming up. dan? >> okay, sandhya, thanks very much. with the writers strike, apparently settled, the focus is now on the actors, representatives of the actors union are returning to the bargaining table on monday. they have not met with the major studios since going out on

strike in july. so this is a big meeting. this comes as details emerge about the wga contract for the writers. there are significant wage increases as well as restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence and a new formula to determine residuals from streaming. members will vote on that contract. starting this coming monday, the same day new episodes of the late night talk shows are expected to return. all right. let's take you to the north bay now. a hebrew school in sonoma is opening up its doors to non-jewish students for the first time ever. this hebrew school meets once a week outside of regular school and opening enrollment is an effort to combat rising anti-semitism. abc seven news reporter tim johns sat down in the class today and has the story. >> what do i have here in front of me? a torah. very good. >> for the past ten years, you could find rabbi steve finley teaching hebrew school at his small jewish congregation in in the city of sonoma. well i'm going to the second little sukkah here.

>> i come. >> but this year, the once a week classes are a little different. for the first time ever, the group has opened up to non-jewish students in a bid to help combat anti-semitism. >> the idea was that the more kids that come and study with us and learn our ways, experience our tradition and get to know us on a personal level, what is this rabbi? it's called the lulav. >> this year's group of kids includes 11 jewish students and two non-jews during class, they learned everything from teachings of the torah to ancient jewish holidays and traditions. the inclusion of new students has been warmly received. >> we get to learn about other cultures and like it's just inviting kids in who aren't the same culture as us and it's a new experience and it's fun. >> those types of feelings are exactly what rabbi finley wants to create. he says while jews have faced persecution for centuries, in recent times, he's gotten more worried. he tells me his congregation regularly has armed security at their gatherings just to ensure peace

of mind. according to the anti-defamation league, anti-semitic incidents are rising rampantly not just across the us, but also right here in northern california. there were 166 incidents in northern california, and that was up to him, 137% year over year. that includes incidents as recently as one month ago in marin county . despite that reality, the rabbi says the challenges also give him strength, strength to keep going, strength to spread love and strength, to honor his ancestors. >> we're an ethnicity and we're a culture and we're a nation. we're a tribe. we're a people or a religion. and we're not going to drop the baton on, you know, on our watch because as far as he's concerned, the work is only just beginning. >> it's a start. >> and we hope to, you know, with the success of these two kids, we hope to actually expand. i got my love and my in sonoma. >> tim johns, abc seven news.

apt install does. developments out of baltimore and the killing of a 26 year old tech ceo. >> her father was among those who spoke at a vigil tonight after the young woman was found dead inside her apartment on monday. police say she died from blunt force trauma to her head just in the past 90 minutes, we've learned the suspect was arrested in maryland. and more details about the case will be available available tomorrow. we will stay on it. but a very emotional night tonight in baltimore. as you can understand . well, building a better bay area is something that motivates us every single day here at abc7. and tonight we're finding some breakthroughs in that mission with local stories that really matter. our first is a new care court in san francisco to get help for those struggling with mental health. the program begins next week after a new law passed last year made it

possible the so called care act expands the range of people who can file a petition for someone to get mental health help. san francisco public health officials say the program will help them tackle the city's mental health crisis with potentially thousands on the streets qualifying to receive them and care court allows for a wide range of petitioners, including first responders, family members. >> somebody who lives with an individual who's worried about them. and those can get filed directly with the court. >> the city currently has about 2500 mental health treatment beds and plans to add more to help meet the need. our next abc7 building a better bay area breakthrough takes you to the south bay where some major progress is being made in the rebuilding of the anderson dam. the dam and its reservoir are near morgan hill are one of the largest sources of water for santa clara county so far. valley water contractors have excavated more than 800ft. of the 1700 foot tunnel next to anderson dam valley. water says

be because they saw a huge need. >> we were able to see through that experience that there were so many other students who had a similar set of questions as we're trying to make their way through with a similar set of struggles and challenges. >> according to the 2019 2020, data from the national center for education statistics, 7.8% of all doctoral degrees were earned by latinos, compared to 57% by white students. >> there's a plethora of struggles that are faced by our community and we need visionary , passionate, engaged scholars to be able to take up that work . >> former san jose state students also now educators, shared their experiences. >> as you realize, as you were in grad school, as you continue to go up, the communities and circles get smaller. >> we tend to come from schools that are under-resourced, underfunded. and so then we get to college and university cities, and you're sitting in classrooms with students that had the complete opposite experience. >> the discussion showed undergrad and graduate students that there is a path and community out there for them and lets other people know that one,

we head into tomorrow afternoon. temperatures 50s, 60s, as you will notice, really comfortable right now from our san jose camera. we are looking at the shark tank. gusty areas tonight, mild to warm tomorrow. much cooler weather for your weekend and showers are likely on saturday. today's highs were anywhere from the upper 60s to the upper 80s. right where they should be for this time of year, 40s and 50s out the door tomorrow morning there will be some areas of low clouds, but the marine layer is not organized. we're not expecting it everywhere tomorrow afternoon. looking at breezy conditions at the coast mid 60s there all the way to the upper 80s inland with lots of sunshine. really nice looking thursday for you. and then we bring in the storm impact scale. i know it's september, but we're bringing in a level one system for saturday. scattered showers, slippery roads, expected breezy conditions and computer models. for the latest computer model right now showing up to a half an inch of rain is possible. so let me show you what's going to happen this system is going to

deepen over the western us. this is friday night and then it's going to start to dive southward while the activity is going to be enhanced over the sierra nevada where they see showers and they'll see some snow showers between 9000 and 9500ft. we're going to get our share of some wet weather. so some showers entering the picture saturday morning, saturday afternoon, some scattered showers rotating back around. so we are expecting that wet weather. rainfall totals will range anywhere from nothing measurable in some parts of the north bay to about a half an inch in livermore, 4/10 in ben lomond, san jose could pick up one quarter of an inch. a live view from zephyr cove tonight. here is a look at the forecast. mild and sunny. if you're heading up to tahoe tomorrow, you're good to go. increasing clouds friday cooler with wet weather. saturday and a possibility of thunder on sunday. there's still a chance of showers. you'll notice those temperatures upper 20s eventually to the low 50s. accuweather 70 forecast mild to warm tomorrow. enjoy it cooling begins friday and we bring in that level one storm with a
