this is america this morning. >> good thursday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning to you. i'm rhiannon ally. we begin with last night's fiery republican primary debate. >> one observer called it a shout fest. seven presidential candidates took the stage, hurling insults and tackling everything from china to gas prices to school choice. >> but the man with a 40 point lead in the polls wasn't there. former president trump was speaking to autoworkers in michigan. >> chris christie was among the candidates slamming trump for missing the debate, calling him donald duck. but much of the debate focused on the seven candidates attacking each other over one of the more fiery moments of the second gop debate. last night came when vivek ramaswamy explained why he joined tiktok after once calling the social media platform digital fentanyl. >> i have a radical idea for the republican party. we need to win elections and part of how we win elections is reaching the next generation of young americans where they are. you see a young man who is in a bit of a hurry,
4:33 am
maybe a little ambitious, bit of a know it all. it seems at times. i'm here to tell you, you know, i don't know it all. >> tiktok is one of the most dangerous social media apps that we could have. and what you've got, i honestly every time i hear you, i feel a little bit dumber for what you say. >> heated back and forth between ramaswamy and nikki haley didn't end there just because putin is not an putin's an evil dictator does not mean that ukraine is good. >> this is a country that has banned 11 opposition parties, a win that has actually is a that is not true. we're driving russia for russia. >> excuse me. >> win for excuse me, nikki, you have a chance. >> you like china. >> that's why you'll have you'll have your chance in just a moment. the hurling personal insults isn't helping. china is the real enemy. and we're driving russia further into china's arms. >> seven candidates squared off at the reagan presidential library in california, debating a range of hot button issues, including the crisis at the border. >> we need to fix a broken immigration system, and i'll do that as well. >> and gun violence. >> i think that the liberal left is seems to be just completely bent on pressing shooting, law

abiding citizens that are gun owners. >> and then this moment when chris christie took a swipe at first lady dr. jill biden while discussing teachers unions, when you have the president of the united states sleeping with a member of the teachers union, there is no chance that you could take the stranglehold away from the teachers union every day by way of full disclosure, chris, you mentioned the president's situation. >> i'm my wife isn't a member of the teachers union. but i got to admit, i've i've been sleeping with a teacher for 38 years. it appears senator tim scott came prepared to take on ramaswami going after the political newcomer for something he said during the first debate. >> he said, we were all bought and paid for and i thought about that for a little while and said, you know, i can't imagine how you can say that knowing that you were just in business with the chinese communist party and the same people that funded hunter biden millions of dollars, this artificial division is unhelpful in our
4:35 am
party. >> scott's team emailed supporters before the debate even ended, highlighting how he took on ramaswami abc's political director rick klein says two of the strongest performances were from scott and haley. >> i think nikki haley showed a lot of fight. and speaking of a fighter, tim scott was almost like a different guy. he did a 180. he went out there and was was talking about how we didn't want a food fight. he was talking about how important it was to get along. last time he seemed to change everything from his pace of delivery to the tone. but in terms of something that really changes the trajectory of the race, it's hard to see that over this shout fest that happened here in simi valley, the candidates took several shots at former president trump for skipping the event as they try to narrow trump's commanding lead in the polls. >> you're ducking these things and let me tell you what's going to happen. you keep doing that. no one up here is going to call you donald trump anymore. we're going to call you donald duck. >> donald trump is missing in action. he should be on this stage. >> trump was in michigan speaking to autoworkers at a nonunion plant where he made only a quick mention of the debate. you know, we're
4:36 am
competing with the job candidates. >> they're all running for a job. you know, they're all job candidates. they want to be in the they want to do anything secretary of something. they even say vp. i don't know. does anybody see any vp in the group? i don't think so. >> while addressing auto workers, trump downplayed the fight for higher wages, saying the real issue is the transition to electric vehicles, which he says will cost union jobs. >> breaking overnight, the man accused of brutally killing a young tech ceo in baltimore has been captured. us marshals say convicted rapist jason billingsley was arrested in maryland. police are expected to release more information at a news conference later this morning. his arrest came hours after hundreds of people attended a vigil for 26 year old pavel perry. her body was found in an apartment building monday. police have not revealed any connection between the suspect and victim. but in addition to the perry's death, billingsley was also wanted for an attempted murder, rape and arson. just last week in baltimore. he's a repeated offender and was released early from prison last year.

feel that keeping him was less valuable than the diplomatic and public relations advantages of letting him go. >> us officials say north korea got nothing in return for king's release. king's mother said to be overjoyed to speak to her son yesterday. she had previously raised concerns about his mental health after his cousin's death in february. now, in the us, experts say king will likely be discharged from the army. >> i think we'll see an administrative discharge rather than pursuing a lengthy judicial process. >> meanwhile, the us has issued a rare statement of gratitude for the chinese government, who, along with sweden, helped facilitate king's departure from north korea. >> andrew am thank you. all signs point to a federal government shutdown this weekend with just three days for lawmakers to pass new funding bills. investment bank goldman sachs says the odds of a shutdown are 90. a bipartisan senate proposal to keep the government running until november has been rejected by
