a moth on me. - ok, we need to go. i hate this [bleep] jungle! hill with just days before the deadline. tonight, it seems congress is on track for a federal shutdown and the division means shockwaves will be sent through much of american life. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. it's an important issue. and tonight's abc seven advancer at 11 exploring what a government shutdown means for you here at home law makers have two days now. that's all to get a deal done. and if you listen to the rhetoric out of washington, it doesn't sound like it's going to happen. house speaker kevin mccarthy is dealing with infighting from conservative republicans. then members say

they only want to vote for individual bills, but they hold me up all summer and won't let me bring individual bills up. >> then they say they won't vote for a stopgap measure that keeps government open. so i don't know where do you go in that scenario? the day at the end of the day will get it all. >> you democrats say they had a deal in place that would keep the government open. >> republicans broke their word and turned their back on the agreement that they themselves negotiated. why because they want to jam their extreme ideology down the throats of the american people. that's why we're in this manufactured republican crisis. >> a shutdown could affect everything from military members getting paid to access to national parks like muir woods and yosemite. now, this afternoon, we spoke with east bay congressman mark desaulnier . he touched on what else would be affected by a government shutdown. >> if you're going to travel that probably you're probably going to take longer. we know

from previous shutdowns that tsa agents won't get paid and so that a lot of them have to go out and find other work until we reopen. so there are fewer of them. air traffic controllers won't be on. they'll be they'll be working, but they won't get paid when we asked about the process and a lot of the bickering that's going on, congressman desaulnier seems to echo what the house speaker said, except he was a little more direct. all of these bills have been gone through the process and now at the last moment, just a handful of members are holding the rest of us hostage. so i think the main motivation here is these are folks who, like a lot of attention and they're getting it, unfortunately. so they continue to do it. >> and when it comes to fleet week next week, the congressman says a shutdown would definitely have some sort of impact and make sure you're on top of this story as it unfolds over the next few days with the abc seven bay area app. we're sending alerts to your phone just like this one, to keep you in the

know immediately. just be sure to turn on the notifications when you download so we can get a get you in touch right away. well, tonight some neighbors in the bay area are worried about something that should be so certain. we're talking about clean and safe drinking water just basic stuff. some in east palo alto are still nervous about what's coming out of the tap. you may remember some of the images last year when we brought you the story. brown odorous water coming right from the faucet. tonight, abc seven news reporter lauren martinez was there with one group helping to find neighbors some relief and help build a better bay area . i want to know if our water is actually good. >> that is my question. is it drinkable? >> east palo alto residents are continuing to question the quality of their water. on thursday, the nonprofit organization nuestra casa held a community event to connect residents directly affected. >> there have been a few incidents where water got cut off temporarily. i also am concerned about water quality. i

don't drink the water directly from our tap. i won't drink it unless it's filtered. >> a year ago, video of brown odorous water was taken by a resident who said that's what it looked like when pipes were getting cleaned. nuestra casa collected a survey that was part of a larger report where hundreds of residents said they were concerned about the quality and aging water infrastructure. that water study brought things to our attention that we probably had overlooked. >> months later, the city says they're working on it and have received a $2 million grant for a water project. >> but the mayor still wants to know if people are buying bottled water. >> as an elected official, i don't know what's going on in everybody's home, so we need to continue to have the discussion not shy away from it. there are three separate water companies that serve east palo alto, and each company receives water from different sources. >> i think the rest of san mateo county receives clean, good tasting water and that the people of east palo alto should as well. >> laura feinstein was one of the panelists and works for the san francisco bay area planning and urban research association.

she said two small water providers in east palo alto have had troubles at times, meeting what's called the taste and odor standards for safe drinking water so that means that the water is safe to drink. >> it won't harm your health, but it does mean often that it looks brown or it smells bad. >> some residents want to know what comes next. >> if that's writing letters to the local politicians, if it's changing the water source that we use every day. but just feel a little bit more empowered rather than just passively accepting whatever happens to come into our pipes. >> the mayor said the water system master plan needs more money and resources to fix the infrastructure here, but acknowledged this issue is taking too long in east palo alto, lauren martinez, abc seven news. new at 11 tesla is facing another lawsuit and this one accuses the company of discrimination and retaliating against black employees. >> it was filed by the us equal employment opportunity commission in california and

follows an investigation at the plant in fremont. the lawsuit claims the company repeatedly violated federal law by allowing the harassment of black employees. tesla did not immediately respond to abc seven news request for comment. but. all right. in the east bay tonight, oakland held a town hall on its search for a new police chief. more specifically, it was the police commission seeking the public's opinion on whether fired chief lauren armstrong should be reinstated. >> i believe that he should be reinstated. i hope the commission has the opportunity to recommend him to be reinstated and i think that the city of oakland has suffered dreadfully since he was fired in this past february. >> what matters is that xiang tao was elected by the majority of oaklanders, and she made a decision. the purpose of this board is not to undermine her leadership. >> at tonight's town hall went on, despite three members of the commission boycotting it, armstrong's name was frequently

has come up frequently during other public meetings during this search for a new chief. he was fired over how he handled some investigations into misconduct. however, a recent report has him claiming he was cleared of any wrongdoing. all right. let's turn our attention now to the weather forecast. weekend arrives tomorrow. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the 24 hour accuweather forecast. yeah and dan, it is going to be a changing 24 hour accuweather forecast. >> so let's take a look at a live picture right now from our exploratorium camera. san francisco salesforce tower looking good this evening as we take a look at tomorrow's planner in the morning there will be very limited fog, just patchy with some high clouds. the sun comes up at seven and three in the morning and we are talking about increasing cloud cover throughout the afternoon with gusty winds. temperatures in the mid 60s to low 80s. so it's a cooler day than today and as the sun is getting ready to set at 655, you will notice that it is thicker cloud cover across the area with live doppler seven

several years as the number of pedestrians killed is on the rise. sfpd pointing to its staffing shortage. a key part of the problem, saying it hopes to have a street safety plan sometime next year. >> we have less people overall in the department. aren't those resources at the traffic company are being pulled in different directions? >> 89 rooms at san jose's arena hotel are now being converted into short term housing for homeless folks. the site, funded by voter approved measure e dollars, is one of a handful of other converted sites in san jose. the city says it's led to a 10% drop in unsheltered homelessness this year. major victory for fast food workers in california. governor newsom signing a new minimum wage increase to $20 an hour. it goes into effect april 1st, and it's a long fought reward for the more than half a million fast food workers in california for

seven news reporter tim jonze went to vallejo tonight to find intrigue viewers and they had some of their own thoughts on love. >> on thursday, millions of people around the country tuned into abc's premiere of the golden bachelor, the new show, a spin off of the original bachelor series, features 72 year old widow gary turner as he searches for love. they were all excited about it. >> there was multiple residents that wanted to watch it, so we decided to have the watch party at goodyear senior living facility in vallejo. >> several people put on their best clothes and came out to watch the show that included 81 year old mary spry danner i wanted to see how this handsome 72, 72 year old. d wanted to come back out and live again. mary says she's been a fan of the original show for years and was excited to see it. now with someone closer to her own age. she told me it even sparked her imagination. would you ever go on the golden bat? >> yes, i sure. i'll get on there. yeah >> others, though, weren't as

year old jeremy stoner was also there to watch as fred cain. the third, was formally charged. as we told you last night here at 11. he's being looked at now at another child murder in martinez . both crimes were just weeks apart. nine year old eric coy from martinez was found stabbed to death in 1987. today's court hearing focused on six year old jeremy cain did not enter a plea and was assigned a public defender. after the hearing, jeremy's family met with prosecutors. >> this is hard for me. i don't know if it's relief or yeah, it's not feeling good, that's for sure. >> i don't think you ever really get closure. i've been around a long time. haven't ever seen families get true closure. but i feel like it'll be some comfort that someone will be held. >> cain is scheduled to be back in court next month. tonight, some west coast wine experts are working with the federal government to find ways to protect wine grapes from wildfire smoke. scientists from

going from 85 to 71 for santa rosa, 13 degrees cooler, 83 today you're down to 70 on saturday. well what's bringing all those changes? there's a system that is developing on live doppler seven. that trough is going to drop down, bring cooler air and wet weather to the bay area. temperatures right now in the 50s and 60s. as we take a look at a live picture from our sutro tower camera, san francisco just sparkling tonight , increasing clouds, windy and cooler tomorrow, much cooler saturday with those scattered showers. and we are talking about sunshine and much warmer weather for you coming up again next week. morning temperatures in the 50s as there will be patchy fog around along with high clouds. breezy along the coastline tomorrow afternoon. those winds will increase. we're talking about windy along the coast and breezy inland. that's going to bring about the cooler weather mid 60s to barely making it to 80 degrees. the winds will be onshore first thing tomorrow morning and they will pick up as we head into the afternoon,

which will usher in the cooler air. but it's going to be gusty, 30 to 35 miles an hour. you need to start looking for those extra layers as we introduce our storm impact scale saturday going into sunday morning. it's a light level one. we're looking at scattered showers, some slick roadways, gusty winds and a slight possibility of thunderstorms. here's that trough that's going to be dropping down into california and as it does, i want to show you the hour by hour timeline saturday morning at 2:00. hopefully you're sleeping. there will be some wet roadways out there going into 7 a.m, scattered showers, as you will notice, really that wave of shower activity continues even into saturday evening with some moderate showers being picked up there. and then early sunday morning, 5 a.m, the south bay is the last to see the showers depart. so we'll keep this shower activity going, at least through the early sunday morning hours. as far as rainfall goes, rainfall totals have been coming up a bit, half an inch for some of our wettest spots, 100th of an inch for some of the drier
