controversial comments in "vogue" from one executive about transgender and plus-size models. >> i knew i had a pretty sensational interview on my hands. pretty much from start to finish, i was jaw on the floor. >> reporter: and as for the show itself, its models were getting skinnier and skinnier. >> we didn't see new talent, we didn't see diverse bodies. selling the fantasy was more important than catering to everyday women. >> reporter: for years now, victoria's secret, once the largest lingerie retailer in the u.s., has tried to overhaul its image. the brand quickly moving away from the iconic scantily-clad angels to naming ambassadors instead, including trans model valentina san pie and athletes like megan rapinoe. >> it remains to be seen if these efforts are enough. let's see that it's not just jumping on a trend, that this is

here to stay. >> reporter: now rebranding its iconic show for the first time in five years. hoping to recapture some of its former magic with a more diverse and inclusive set of models, designers, and other creatives. >> fashion is deep, very deep. >> reporter: the new fashion show isn't really a fashion show at all. it's a feature-length documentary called "the tour '23." >> rather than women being the objects of the gaze, they're in front of the camera, they're behind the camera. and i think that that goes a good way to reframing what the company stands for. >> reporter: the film marks a new chapter in the brand's history. >> i do believe that they want to achieve something greater and to the next level and do more for this community of women. >> reporter: but the question remains, is it too little, too late? the victoria's secret fashion

show was first broadcast to the world in 1999 to much fanfare. >> hi, guys. nice. whoo! >> reporter: year after year, the lingerie became flashier, the stage grander, the acts bigger. >> as a model, your pinnacle was victoria's secret or vogue or sports illustrated. >> reporter: at its peak, more than 10 million people tuned in. >> i'm excited to see everyone. i'm excited to see all these beautiful girls strut. >> reporter: "nightline" was behind the scenes at its last show in 2018, which the company touted as one of its most diverse yet. >> i'm just so happy that victoria's secret is including models of color. >> we're celebrating diversity. we have angels from all over the world. >> i think diversity is so important. i wouldn't be doing it if i wasn't empowered. >> reporter: still, many women felt the models never reflected the increasing diversity of the brand's target consumers.

>> i would judge my body so harshly and really compare it to the women on that catwalk. i felt, why not just show a few more sizes on that runway? or a few more ages? what's so wrong about that? and then it completely went the opposite way. it went very young, and it went skinnier if possible. i mean, i was so disappointed. i stopped loving them as a brand. >> reporter: australian model robin lawly, once a huge fan of the show, who even auditioned for it twice, has long been critical of victoria's secret and what it represented to many young women around the world. >> if you're walking in that fashion show, you weren't eating. these girls were going to crazy lengths to walk that runway. some of them weren't even drinking water. you know, because it was muscle definition on their bodies. >> reporter: in 2018, she started an online petition urging people to boycott the victoria's secret fashion show writing, "as women, i want us

all to join together and say, i am enough, i am beautiful, i am unique, and i want to see my body shape represented in your shows." >> i remember how i felt as a teenager by watching such shows and not seeing my body represented. i have a daughter. and i wouldn't want my daughter to go through that at all. you know, i'm not going to let her go through that. >> reporter: but for robin, victoria's secret's efforts to change its image feel hollow. >> i think the rebranding for me personally is a little bit too late. i do want them to change, but i want the show back. i don't want it in tv form, i want the actual show back, and i want them doing that down that runway to an audience like they used to do. >> reporter: the criticism goes beyond just a lack of inclusivity. in 2018, a longtime powerful senior executive ed razek made controversial comments in a "vogue" interview, saying victoria's secret doesn't hire, quote, transsexuals for its runway show because the show is

a fantasy. nicole phelps wrote that 2018 "vogue" article. >> the interview that we published came out the morning of the show taping in 2018. but by the time the show would have come around the following year, the company decided to cancel the show. there had been growing criticism. >> reporter: razek later apologized for his, quote, insensitive remarks and resigned the next year. >> i think the brand got in trouble saying they weren't representative of all types of bodies. it didn't make all women feel sexy, it just made a certain category of women feel sexy. that's a problem when you're talking about something as intimate and as personal as lingerie. >> reporter: but for its efforts to move past the controversies, public perception of the brand is still on shaky ground. since going public in the summer of 2021, victoria's secret's stock price has been on a downward trend.

>> they have to play catch-up to the brands that came out saying, we see you, and we represent you, and we have something for you, and we're not going to make you feel ashamed of what your body looks like in its most intimate shape. victoria's secret has to start from ground zero with that. >> i do think our generation is becoming more and more conscious about our purchasing choices. i think about what kind of image are they trying so portray? we think about diversity a lot. >> reporter: this 25-year-old social media influencer zoe thinks the company can bounce back. >> i think it still holds a lot of power in the market and the culture. so if it were to make a comeback and be a little bit more inclusive, it will do a lot for the new generation of young girls where they feel like their body is beautiful in one way or another. >> reporter: still, she says, there is a certain nostalgia for the former years.

>> juju: lizzo. she's the superstar singer under fire again. now being sued by clothing designer asha daniels, who accuses the star's team of harassment and creating a hostile work environment. daniels said she thought working on the special tour was a dream come true until, she says, it wasn't. here's abc's janai norman. >> i'm really big on black female identity. everything i do has a deeper meaning and it's seen in the collections i create. >> reporter: asha daniels has a passion for making inclusive clothing, now coming forward as a new accuser as part of working on "the special" tour. >> as a black woman in the industry, whenever i suffer an abuse or injustice, i've kind of taken it on the chin and kind of just gone back to work. >> reporter: while she never interacted with the star directly, she's accusing the stash's team of racial and

sexual harassment. >> i'm coming in to work with someone who's physically assaulted me, threatened me, someone who is not allowing me to eat when i need to eat. >> i think it's extremely damaging in the court of public opinion because of the image that we've all believed lizzo to be. >> reporter: daniels' complaints are part of a growing list of legal actions mounting against the pop star. back in july, three dancers filed a lawsuit against the singer and her production company alleging sexual and racial harassment, even assault, plus creating a hostile work environment. lizzo is denying it all, defiant for all to see. from shopping sprees in beverly hills to popping up at beyonce's show in l.a. -- for years, lizzo has been known for promoting body positivity and self-love. ♪ i'm gonna be okay ♪

namora, supervising agent for lizzo. she says she was helping her move a clothing rack when things started to go awry. >> she rolls over my foot with this heavy rack. i went, wait a minute, my foot is really hurting, i need to stop, i need to sit down. so she pushes me into the rack, and she says, "don't make excuses, take this rack." >> reporter: according to the claims in the lawsuit, daniels claims, due to being shoved, she lost her balance and rolled her ankle which led her to wearing more comfortable shoes the next day to minimize the pain. she alleges namora demanded she change into tennis shoes. >> i'm stunned because i've never had anyone put their hands on me, saeshl in a workplace. of all places on tour with lizzo. anything different between how she interacted with me and how i saw her with other people is i was a black woman and she felt she could get away with treating me that way. >> reporter: daniels says that wasn't the only staffmember that

was unprofessional. she says the tour was an overly sexual workplace, pointing to one alleged incident in a team group chat with lizzo's staffers. >> you say in the lawsuit that there was a group chat with nearly three dozen people, more than 30 people. and this were times that what was discussed made you uncomfortable? >> there's a picture sent to all 30-plus of us of a porn star who was erect, and his genitalia was out. management was in that group chat as well. nobody reprimanded the person who sent it. >> reporter: daniels says she was inspired by the three young dancers, who are also suing lizzo, to tell her own story about working for the star. >> when i saw them speak up i thought, that's what strong looks like. i was really proud of them, because i knew how toxic the work culture was on that tour firsthand. >> reporter: the two lawsuits are now renewing scrutiny about lizzo. we reached out to lizzo and her attorney to sit down with us. they declined.

daniels claims she heard a senior staffer on lizzo's team mocking the girls and even lizzo herself in a racist way. >> you say that amanda would allegedly mock lizzo? >> yeah. amanda would regularly mock both lizzo and the big girls, refer to them as fat, a bevy of really inappropriate things. useless, lazy. i told her, this is really offensive. she just laughed it off. >> most of your allegations are against amanda nomura. what about lizzo herself? since you never interacted with her, how much responsibility do you think she has in all of this? >> i'm a business owner. i was so shocked lizzo's workplace wasn't in line as who we know as the star lizzo. i can say in my own life, i'm responsible for the people who work for me and work on my projects. and i think that everybody is.
