ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thank you for joining us. a bay area and american icon being remembered tonight. dianne feinstein served 31 years in congress. her legacy goes far beyond paving a pathway for women in politics or gun control. and her place on the senate's judiciary committee. it all started here in the bay area as she rose through the ranks of san francisco politics, becoming the city's mayor following the assassination of george moscone . we begin our coverage tonight with abc7 news reporter tim jonze. >> tim yeah, dan, as you can imagine, tributes have been pouring in since senator feinstein's passing. that includes political leaders here in the bay area as well as around the nation. tonight. i talked to several people who worked with and knew the late senator to hear what they think her legacy will be. almost immediately after news broke of the passing of senator dianne feinstein, an tributes began pouring in from her congressional colleagues in washington, d.c. >> i do so as i say personally as a friend, neighbor and fellow san franciscan. all of us do so

with great pride as the great senator. she has been to our state to here in san francisco. >> it was more than close to her heart. >> she stayed on top of san francisco through the personal contacts, personal relationships and her regular their return to the city. >> many say feinstein's legacy of advocacy and breaking glass ceilings will live on. she was the first female president of the san francisco board of supervisors. was during that time that she led the city through the assassinations of then mayor george moscone and supervisor harvey milk. she then went on to become mayor of the city herself. again, the first woman to have the role. she stepped up. she led with courage . >> she worked hard for this city . she was a beacon of hope and inspiration during a very dark and tragic time, she ultimately became a california senator in 1992, a position she was planning on retiring from in

2025. >> it's because of her long history of public service that many felt compelled to lay flowers outside of her pacific heights home. >> i thought i'd come by and pay my respects. it's probably come by and put my photo with her, you know, i have a photo with her and some flowers. >> beyond being a trailblazer for women in politics, those who knew her say feinstein was also a leader for jewish americans. >> she would talk about how much she cared about her jewish identity, how much she cared about this synagogue, and being a proud member of it. she would attend for the high holidays and other services and have life cycle events here for her family. >> feinstein was a member of congregation emanu-el in san francisco outside of the temple friday evening. several people took time to tell us how much she'll be missed there. one mourner describing feinstein as a cherished and irreplaceable part of the community. >> i came in here to say kaddish. i came to say, and probably i'd expect that a lot of people will be here to say kaddish for her. >> now, if you would like to pay your respects to senator

feinstein, there is a condolence book at san francisco city hall you can sign. we're told the flags there at city hall will also remain at half mast until sunday in honor of her as well. in the studio tonight, tim johns, abc seven news. >> all right, tim, thank you so much. on capitol hill today, a solemn tribute to california's longest serving senator, a black cloth was draped on top of her desk in the senate and atop it, a vase of white flowers. as you see, flags at the capitol were lowered to half staff, as well as at many buildings throughout the state of california. senator feinstein cast her final vote around noon yesterday. she walked unassisted on the senate floor and voted in favor of a short term spending bill intended to avert a government shutdown. the senator passed away later that night. she was 90. >> tonight. a political colleague also from the bay area and serving in washington is remembering dianne feinstein. i spoke this evening with congressman mark desaulnier, who represents parts of the east bay. what are your thoughts today as you look back on her life and career?

>> oh, i'm just so grateful that she was a friend. she's so filled with tenacity, thoughtfulness, but also a grace that i wish there were more of right now in washington, d.c, we've heard that a lot today, that despite her toughness and she was tough, she was also kind , compassionate and warm. yes. how she carried herself, i mean, was more liberal than her, but always respected her. she was. and she was a person of great consequence. yes. she could get things done, which we need more of. right now in politics. >> congressman desaulnier emphasized the late senator's grace and manner in her dealings with her colleagues. he also emphasizes that she had the respect of lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, something that we've heard a lot about her today. >> abc7 news insider phil matier reflected on what dianne feinstein meant to san francisco and he had an interesting analogy.

>> she was the principal. you know, at the school, the principal that made sure everything ran okay. you know, you had your teachers, you had your students, but there was always the principal. she kept her hand in everything. yes but she made it kind of orderly and, you know, and would blow the whistle. but in 1979, when the cable cars were literally falling apart, she went out there and got them fixed. she one of the reasons why san francisco skyline looks the way it does is because of her. she revitalized a number of things in the city and in the bay area because that's what she was interested in. like i said, she was the principal. can there ever be another dianne feinstein? no you can. you can you can fill the seat, but you can't fill the person. >> and as we look live at the us capitol tonight, feinstein passing has left an empty seat in the senate. the spotlight is already on governor newsom. who decides who will fill it? governor newsom has said he wants an interim caretaker to hold the seat until next year's election, and he's promised to select a black woman. >> some of the names that have risen to the forefront have been shirley weber, who was appointed

to replace alex padilla as the secretary of state. we also have malia cohen, who's also been mentioned, and she is currently our state comptroller. and holly mitchell, who's worked with the newsom campaign in previous. and she's a current la county supervisor. >> san francisco mayor, london breed is another name that's being suggested for the now vacant seat. >> happening now also on capitol hill, the federal government is spiraling toward a shutdown in about 24 hours. a vote on a short term funding bill in the house failed. and it doesn't look like a deal will get done anytime soon. abc7 news reporter tim tara campbell is in the newsroom. she's been looking into how a shutdown would affect the bay area. tara, what'd you find out? >> yeah. dan well, a big setback today. the house failing to pass a stopgap spending bill and now lawmakers are in a race against the clock. they have until tomorrow night to get to some agreement to get some agreement on the books, to prevent a shutdown from fleet week to the

bay area's beloved national parks, all national parks, they shut down anything. >> i'll be very upset to airports, security all poised to be crippled by a government shutdown. >> more worried about getting home. >> the bill is not passed on friday. >> the house failing to pass a stopgap spending bill, making a government shutdown most likely . >> what is the logical next step? >> we keep working and make sure make sure we solve this problem. >> millions of federal workers potentially losing paychecks, federal food benefits also on the line. >> we are most concerned about how this shutdown can impact low income people who rely on government benefits, government offices to be available. well, you know, this is going to really harm them. >> tracy weatherby is with second harvest of silicon valley , one of the bay area's biggest food banks. and she says they've been preparing for a shutdown. >> people are not getting paychecks, not getting calfresh. we have really worked to ensure that we'll have resources available so that people can get grocery and that basic food

support that they need to survive. >> a warning if a shutdown does drag on, they could have a problem keeping up. >> i'm hoping the whole congress will work together to avert this completely unnecessary crisis for low income people. >> but east bay congressman mark desaulnier is losing hope. when asked if he's optimistic about getting a deal done. he was quite clear, not after today. >> i was surprised by how many republicans voted against a bill that was completely unacceptable to us. >> and the congressman isn't mincing words about the impact that it will be become more disastrous over time. >> but people will feel the effects of it and they'll feel it reasonably quickly. now lawmakers have until midnight eastern time tomorrow to come to an agreement on some sort of spending bill. >> if they don't get it done, it will mark the fourth shutdown in the past decade. dan and alma. >> okay, tara, thank you. >> okay. we are going to turn now to the weather because as

you could guess, we may see some rain pretty soon. >> yeah, it's got noticeably cooler and the weekend is interesting in terms of weather, meteorology. sandeep patel is here with your 24 hour accuweather forecast and yeah and dan and alma it's an early season system that is moving in. >> we're starting to see some damp roadways out there. let's take a look at a live picture from our golden gate bridge camera where it is a little slippery with not just drizzle, but as we look at live doppler seven, we do have a few showers that have developed in the south santa rosa area, stony point road. we are seeing some wet conditions across 101. widening the picture. it's a light level one storm. it has brought thunderstorms up to parts of northern california near chico here in the bay area. we're going to continue to see waves of showers moving in as we head towards tomorrow morning. this is 8:00. if you have early plans , make sure you have your umbrellas and hang on to them because at noontime, you're still seeing some of those showers going through. the winds have been gusty right now, 31 miles an hour in the oakland hills. i'll let you know how long this wet weather will last

the entire weekend forecast is coming up. ama >> all right, sandhya, thank you. today a breakthrough in the murder case of legendary rapper tupac shakur. an arrest has been made. tupac had many connections in the bay area and lived here for a time as abc7 news reporter answer hassan explains we are here today to announce the arrest of 60 year old dwayne keith davis after 27 years. >> dwayne cepheidae davis was charged with the murder of legendary rapper tupac shakur. for years, davis was one of four suspects in the investigation. davis, who lives in this house in las vegas, isn't the accused gunman, but authorities say he devised and orchestrated the plan and wrote about it in his 2019 autobiography. we always thought that it was the new york versus la, well known bay area attorney john burris represented tupac in a civil rights lawsuit against the oakland police department in the early 1990s. burris hopes this development won't trigger revenge killings. he's still surprised the case dragged on for decades.

>> i thought the doors would have been sufficient enough leads to move things along. being a friend and a fan of tupac, there's mean i could pull out many, many, many songs. >> but of course the one that came to mind first was dear mama darryl. >> rory, who lives in marin city, was a longtime friend of tupac. well before his rise to fame. one concern he has, davis may be in custody, but he may not be the man who fired the gun that killed tupac. >> we don't want somebody just to be in jail, just, you know, to satisfy his family and satisfy the people who loved him . you know, if this guy had was involved in, you know, then, you know, so be it. but, you know, it's bittersweet day. >> but on this day, rory is focused on the legacy of his friend, the artist whose music still remains relevant today. >> his name is still up there. i just hope justice will be served, if not today at some point and may he rest in peace. >> abc7 news one more coming up here on murder mystery in the

news coverage to historic clips pulled from our archives. you'll find it all on the abc7 bay area app available wherever you stream. >> new at 11 coincidence or something more nefarious. san leandro police are investigating two killings that are nearly identi cal to one another. they happen less than two weeks apart in the parking lot of the 24 hour fitness at bayfair center. abc7 news reporter laura martinez says the deadly shootings have shaken the community. de san leandro police are investigating two separate killings outside of the same gym. >> police say the murders occurred ten days apart in the parking lot of 24 hour fitness at bayfair center. so it was one officer that was standing over there and i asked him what had happened and he said this is the second homicide. police say the first homicide was reported on thursday, september 14th, around 11:50 a.m. officers found a man dead inside of a vehicle from what appeared to be a single gunshot wound. the second homicide was reported sunday,

september 24th, around 10:40 a.m. police say that again, responding officers located a man dead inside his vehicle, suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. >> i did see a vehicle that, you know, the coroner was driving off when i drove up despite seeing the aftermath, robert taylor feels secure overall. just be aware of what your surroundings and what's going on on the parking lot because, you know, other things that have happened, too. >> we spoke to residents who say the news is troubling. >> that's really shocking since i come here like every day. and to hear something like that is concerning because we should be feeling safe when we go out in a community. >> some anxiety. but, you know, like it's like no matter where you go, especially like here in the united states, like you're always going to come across those issues. >> investigators are looking into the possibility if the homicide rides are random acts or connected with each other. police say at this time no further information will be released in san leandro. lauren martinez, abc seven news.

>> the united auto workers union is expanding its strikes against detroit automakers today. the union ordered 7000 more workers to walk off the job in illinois and michigan. it's the second time the union has expanded the walkout, which started two weeks ago at three assembly plants. union leaders say they escalated the strike because ford and gm refused to make meaningful progress in contract talks. the union wants better benefits, a shorter workweek and higher pay. >> all right. well, our workweek is about over. so that means the weekend's here. >> and meteorologist sandy patel is tracking the forecast sandy. >> yeah, and dan and irma, the weekend includes some wet weather, but not a washout. so let me show you some live pictures. it's a slippery view on the golden gate bridge. clouds are gathering, as you can see from our other tower cameras right now. and we are tracking a trough that is just dropping into california, very well defined. and you can see those thunderstorms and some wet weather up to the north. certainly to the in the sierra

as well. so we take a look closer here. petaluma western avenue, street level, radar showing you some light showers across 101. now, the wider picture does show you those showers are beginning to move into the north bay and they'll be spreading as we head towards tomorrow morning. temperatures right now in the 60s pretty comfortable as we look at a live view from our emeryville camera. yes, it is definitely cloudy out there. dan perry is in breezy conditions tonight. spotty showers and gusty tomorrow. we do have sunnier skies for your sunday and a big warm up coming. your way next week if you're going to hardly strictly bluegrass at golden gate park tomorrow, i would carry a rain coat or an umbrella with you. and certainly bundle up because it's going to be a few showers and windy out there. mid 60s and sunny and gusty on sunday, but certainly warmer for you. so it's a level one system for tomorrow, a light level one, scattered showers with some slippery roads and breezy to windy conditions as you look hour by hour, 6:00 in the morning, the showers will be around parts of the bay area, 8

a.m. some of this begins to increase in coverage going into 11 a.m. and then really spotty for the afternoon. isolated for the evening. and it's pretty much winding down. so the first half of your day, does include some wet weather anywhere from nothing measurable to about a 10th of an inch. wettest spots could pick up up to a quarter of an inch of rain. now, this does turn to snow, but it's above 8000ft. so well above past level lake level is just going to be showers in the sierra and tahoe. so the snow showers expected this weekend, maybe an inch or two up in the mountains. your morning temperatures in the 50s. wendy coastside, there will be some showers to start your saturday and then for your afternoon hours, i would hang on to the umbrella because it will still see a couple of pop up showers. it's going to be below average, low 60s to low 70s and certainly breezy to windy as we go hour by hour. those winds will be strongest near the coast, 10 a.m, 30 to 36 miles an hour. still gusty as we head towards 4:00 pm. if you're going

to the niners game against the cardinals on sunday, it's going to be bright and breezy, low to mid 70s. so nice weather for the game. the accuweather is 70 forecast tomorrow so we have the wet weather level one and then we have sunshine for sunday. warmer conditions. temperatures are going to keep going up. we're going to bring in the 90s inland and yeah, mid to upper low to mid 70 excuse me along the coastline. so we do have october warmth coming our way next week, well above average temperatures. >> that's a 20 degree swing. >> yeah. it's going to be a big swing. it'll be back to like

retail banking in california by j.d. power. giants making national headlines on friday. manager gabe kapler is out after four seasons and just days after the team was eliminated from the playoffs. in those four seasons, kapler led the team to the playoffs just one time. farhan zaidi, head of baseball operations for the giants, said we viewed ourselves as a playoff team, expected to be a playoff team, and we're not a playoff team. attendance is also down since 2021. that's a big deal for a team like the giants. who is often top five in attendance. here is farhan, who spoke on friday, followed by analysis from abc7 sports director larry beil. it's ultimately my job to put a product on the field that our organization is proud of and that our fans are proud of and frankly, it just hasn't happened the last couple of years.

>> look, the giants do. >> they had to do something and frankly, it's a lot easier to dump your manager than your whole roster. but this team has been in a freefall coming down the stretch. they dropped out of the wild card playoff chase, lifeless. even worse, they were just born. and when your star pitcher logan webb says big changes need to be made. while the first change came with gabe kapler being let go after four seasons, kapler the opposite of the man who replaced the beloved bruce bochy, who, oh, by the way, has texas in first place. kapler is an analytics driven skipper. he lives and dies with his platoon system, clearly rubbed some pitchers the wrong way with a lack of define roles. but let us be real here. this was a mediocre roster with only two bona fide starting pitchers . ironically, when capra led the giants to a 107 win season in 2021, that was fool's gold. the giants thought they were good. they were real contenders. in reality, the whole roster overachieved. the squad was not nearly as good as it appeared, and the minor league system this is on farhan zaidi has not produced big time stars. now the

question is who takes over and will that help the giants land a star free agent in the off season? >> no. gabe kapler managing the giants after his firing, but they still had a game on friday night, the start of a final three game series against the dodgers. thairo estrada headlining to start things off as he receives the 2023 willie mac award. his daughter even threw out the first pitch to him. i think she's got a future on the mound. onto the game first inning and the dodgers say we are in the first place in the division and this is why will smith gone dodgers with an early lead up three one in the third and wilmer flores says i can do that too. mr. 2022 willie mac award winner make it 3 to 2 in the top of the sixth. hey we got a game here now that is a negative j.d. martinez line drive three run shot. dodgers go up 6 to 2. and that was the final dodgers win. 6 to 2. sports on abc7 is sponsored by

high lamps, right, they kind of remind you like a street in venice. but the tool of hospitality, i think that what makes people feel that they're really transported somewhere else. [music] so, carlo, how is it for you being like a partner here at the restaurant, but also being back here making these fabulous drinks? - life dream. - [laughing] it's like a soccer player playing for, like, a national team. kumasi: i think your drinks are so unique, and i'm excited. i wanna see how you make them, especially my favorite one, which is this cantaloupe drink. carlo: we have fresh cantaloupe juice that we press it daily, and then we do soda water, and now we top it with prosecco. [speaking italian] cantaloupe sphere with a prosciutto di parma, and balsamic pearls on top. - cheers. - you're hired. we love the ambiance, we love the drinks. but we all know when it comes to a restaurant, the most important thing is the food. so, i'm gonna take you inside the kitchen. you gotta cook with passion, you gotta cook with your heart.

and it shows in the food, you can taste it. if you were to describe the food here, how would you describe it? i would describe the food at bar sprezzatura casual, but delicate. we pay attention to all the ingredients. we pay attention to the craft, putting everything together and putting it on the plate. so, every detail is very important. here, when you take a bit of something of the food here, we really want it to be an explosion of flavor on the palate. you have, like, a connection to italy, italian food, you really like it. growing up, my dad was always making pastas and pizzas, and teaching me about the italian way of simplicity. i grew up eating it. we just wanna make it good for you. we want to make a great memory. you can choose a lot of places to go, so for us, it's a luxury to have everybody here. we have a shot to make somebody a memory for life. kumasi: you could have built this restaurant anywhere in any city, but even in san franciso, in any neighborhood. why downtown san francisco?
