maybe their season on the line. >> rece: and now that defense will need to make one more stop. they'll have a chance for atonement. duke has all three of its time-outs, but first, the two-point conversion. hartman throwback, it's good. it's a seven-point game. >> kirk: i think we're seeing a new sam hartman. that defense feared him running. they worried about him taking off. that's what they adjusted to. they took their eyes off of coverage. watch him come out of there. he's not just jogging, he's sprinting. duke's worried he's going to go to the corner. they lose their man in coverage, and he said, thank you very much. remember, guys, i can still throw it, too. >> rece: hartman, who was here last year with wake forest and lost a shootout game 34-31, now has put his team up with a terrific drive. notre dame up by seven, but not
8:01 pm
done yet. blue devils will have 31 seco seconds, see if they can force this game into overtime. >> kirk: they showed him like that last week when ohio state was starting to move the ball down the field and they kept showing him and it was another play and they'd show him like this, and eventually they stopped showing him because ohio state scored. he's got the look going, we're happy for him, but right now, it's about notre dame's defense stepping up here and trying to secure a victory. see if riley leonard has one more trick up his sleeve. >> rece: blue devils have had trouble in the passing game. leonard, just 11 of 26 tonight. fair catch from moore. so, 75 yards between the blue devils and potentially a tie or win if they can get it into the end zone. >> kirk: 31 seconds.
8:02 pm
all three time-outs. you've got some receivers that have made tom psome plays for y here in the second half. most notably, 5, calhoun, 8, moore. the backs can be a factor. the big question to me is, can this offensive line, in an obvious passing situation, can they protect. can they give leonard enough time to try to make a read and get a good throw out? >> rece: first play of the drive. hagans scoots out of bounds after picking up five. >> kirk: notre dame will take that, even though he gets out of bounds. five-yard gain. it's all about the clock for notre dame. >> rece: that one win against sam hartman and wake forest last year before hartman transferred to notre dame. and leonard hit. ball's loose -- and leonard is
8:03 pm
clutching his ankle. and the football still loose -- and it's notre dame football. you hate to see that. boy, oh, boy, i hope he's okay. oh, boy. >> rece: just a devastating way for this to end for duke. and he's being attended to on the field. >> kirk: we talked about a notre dame veteran defender is going to have to make a play and it ends up being howard cross. beats his man, gifts to the football before riley leonard can come forward with his hand. that's definitely a fumble. >> rece: and his ankle twist ed in terrible-looking fashion, as cross was making that play.
8:04 pm
and riley's still down. boy, you hate to see this. he is -- he is played his heart out. the guys on both teams have. and they're helping riley leonard off the field now. >> kirk: how fitting for -- you see players are going to carry him off there >> rece: while this certainly puts a damper on the end, it does nothing to diminish a gutsy, tough-nosed, mentally tough victory for notre dame. >> kirk: if you are a notre dame fan, you know about rylie mills, 99, howard cross, those guys battled in the middle all night long. that's what they're known for, their effort, their consistency, and cross has a monster night. 13 tackles, 3 1/2 for a loss,
8:05 pm
forced two fumbles. you see the big sack there. >> rece: his dad, longtime giants tight end. former alabama star, proud of his son's effort tonight without a doubt. as estime slams it up into the line. and expire. sam hartman exchanging words, pleasant ones, congratulatory words with brandon johnson. this -- if you like physical football, this was a really, really good game. holly rowe's found sam hartman. >> holly: sam, fourth down and 16 yards to go. at what moment did you decide to try to run it yourself and get the 17th yard? >> i think, i just have to say hats off to our defense. they battled, got us the ball back to close the game out.
8:06 pm
defense wins championships and they won it today, so, i'm just super proud of them and everything in the game. a lot of corrections, but i mean, defense, coach golden, bounce back, that's notre dame football right there. >> holly: how did you get the fourth down? >> a lot of luck, but -- defense. go irish. >> holly: tell me a little bit about this psyche of the team. last week, the game went down to the final play. today, again, final moments. how did your team flip it around? >> i mean, it's just perseverance. it's not that, you know, at the end of the day, winning is losing is everything, but again, it makes you feel a lot better to get it done in the last moments. but right now, i'm thinking about riley. that kid is a hell of a player, he went down. i really want to go check in on him. >> holly: go do that, thank you. coach freeman is here, and coach -- everybody wanted to know, how would you team turn the page, and they did, but what were you thinking on the fourth and 16 when your quarterback decides to run? >> when he decided to run, he
8:07 pm
pulled the ball down. i really felt good about it. i saw it, i'm like, if sam is going to run this, he's going to make it. it happened last week on a fourth and one situation. he learned from that. you have to learn from those opportunities, man. and so for him to run down there, he wasn't going to be denied. so i love that, man. >> holly: and he wasn't. then again, estime goes in for the touchdown what was that play and how did he break it? >> we were trying to run the clock out and set ourselves up to kick a game-winning field goal and probably a situation where you want to go down and, you know, really kick the ball. but i'm so proud of this team to continue to fight, you know? i thought -- we learned from last week. we didn't know how this game would go. the last week, ohio state found a way to finish when it mattered the most, and that's what this team found a way to do. >> holly: how do you describe the resilience, you try to coach and it teach it, what does that feel like? >> really proud. i'm proud for them. this is all i want. these guys to really feel this feeling of victory, and it's hard-earned, and i'm proud of
8:08 pm
those guys. >> holly: can i sneak one more guy in here? we -- you would not have gotten this win. tell me about that run, how did you find the end zone? >> yeah, it was awesome. the offensive line, it wasn't a pretty game, but we got the job done, we kept on fighting for fourth quarters and that's just the result of us not giving up. >> holly: they had shut you guys out in the second half. however did you find a touchdown late? >> yeah, they're a really good team. we knew coming into this game it was going to be a four-quarter game. it popped when we needed it. >> holly: coach talked about having a championship response. how do you describe them tonight? >> we battled. we had a great week of practice. it showed off on the field today. >> holly: thank you so much. >> rece: holly, thank you very much. you see sam hartman waiting outside the duke sports medicine tent where they are checking out riley leonard. these two squared off when sam
8:09 pm
was at wake forest, riley here at duke. great mutual respect between these two really sam hartman. >> kirk: yeah, he's concerned. he has a great deal offed a mir ragts and respect for the type of player he is and the way he carries himself. so, that's very cool to see him sitting there, just wanted to, you know, make sure that -- he just wanted to check in. looks like he's coming out now on some crashes. he'll get a chance to say hello to him. mentioned the last time they went against each other, over 730 yards of passing offense. very different type of game. this time, sam hartman, not so much his arm, but we'll remember this one about his heart and his legs being the difference in this football game when it mattered most. >> rece: and notre dame, you know, all of its dreams in terms of the college football playoff
8:10 pm
are hanging in the balance after the loss to ohio state. they had to win the game tonight. says a lot for them. >> kirk: it really says it, when you go back and watch this film. and there was moments where it looked like notre dame should be ploying them out. other moments where it looked like duke is going to have a chance -- i say 95 yards -- they had to get into field goal range, but they go 95 yards and putting a touchdown on the board. >> kirk: our best out to riley leonard. class young man. hope he's not hurt badly. can't wait to watch him play again after he gets well. our final score from durham, notre dame pulls it out, 21-14. tonight's game produced by bill bonnell, directed by jimmy platt. now, except on the west coast, stay tuned for your local news over most of these abc stations. for kirk and holly, i'm rece davis sitting in for chris fowler tonight. don't forget, the nfl game on espn+ tomorrow. safie i saying good night from north carolina.
