she died the way she lived on her own terms when she was ready. and now we've lost her. so we're sad. but we celebrate her life today. >> the body of senator dianne feinstein returned to san francisco as her closest family and friends gathered to remember her. good evening. i'm stephanie sierra. a military flight transported the late senator's body back to the bay area landing at san francisco international airport just before 6:00 this evening. among the people accompanying her body was long time colleague and

friend, speaker emerita nancy pelosi. abc's seven news reporter tara campbell had a chance to speak to the congresswoman today and joins us live from the newsroom. tara? >> yeah, stephanie, i actually spent time this evening at the late senator's former home and the funeral home where she arrived tonight and really the mood is best described as peaceful in anticipation of her arrival home. ready to all uniformed personnel pre set put a salute for late senator dianne feinstein set to be laid to rest in san francisco. >> we're so happy to have her have the appropriate welcome home to san francisco. >> speaker emeritus nancy pelosi among a handful of close friends and family gathering. >> we thought was one with great sorrow but great pride in dianne . >> her body arriving at san francisco international airport sunday evening and escorted to sinai memorial chapel.

>> there's no one like her. she was wonderful. all we want to do is pay respects to her. >> we wanted to recognize this moment in history and in san francisco history and in in world history. >> and not too far from the funeral home, the senator's former home marked by offerings of gratitude, including this thank you note. this is her city and she will be sorely missed. >> recalling when then supervisor feinstein became the city's first female mayor after the assassins versions of supervisor harvey milk and mayor george moscone. and she led during a dark time in the city and brought a beacon of light and hope to us. she was one of the first the women that got into politics and were strong enough to be able to battle her way up the ladder and stay there, going on to become the first and longest serving woman in congress. >> last official thing she did in washington was to vote to advance the bill to keep government open. i love that she

. it's been a hard fought battle against hiv aids in san francisco. >> many of the annual sf aids foundation gala say more still needs to be done. >> it seems like getting to zero infections with hiv is within reach. but san francisco, there is so much more to do. even though it's 30 years later, the mission is still as important as it was 30 years ago. >> the atrocities of having emceed by abc7 morning news anchor reggie aqui. >> the gala marked a milestone and throughout the night many reflected on us senator dianne feinstein's role in the fight against aids early on. >> we were the epicenter of the epidemic and we were really struggling to figure out who our champions would be. >> there would be many. but among them, some say, was then san francisco mayor dianne feinstein. >> in many different elected offices. over time, senator feinstein worked to ensure that we had the local funding that we needed or the federal funds necessary. >> that funding was crucial in keeping people alive, says paul

aguilar. there are 16,000 people living with hiv in san francisco, 74% of them are over the age of 50. >> i'm one of those people diagnosed in 1988. >> aguilar says. the funding feinstein fought for allowed for the best medical care in the nation, and that transformed how people live with the disease. >> it was about saving lives that was her focus and, you know, we're grateful for all that she brought to san francisco. >> that doesn't mean feinstein didn't have her critics. the sisters of perpetual indulgence , who were honored at the gala for their work, say they didn't always agree with feinstein policies. >> well, we didn't quite get along, senator feinstein told us. we came to a mutual agreement that we were here to serve the community in our own ways. >> the person who will replace feinstein in the us senate will be appointed by governor gavin newsom. >> i'm sure the governor will make a very, very strong choice . he he i know being very thoughtful about it and i'm sure

he'll make a good decision in san francisco, anzar hassan, abc seven news in the nation's capital now, a government shutdown has been averted, at least until mid november, just before the midnight deadline. >> president joe biden signed a stopgap bill to keep the government open for 47 days. this after the house and senate passed the compromise funding measure with bipartisan support. but as abc's and win reports, getting the deal done came down to the wire with just hours to go the house passing a bipartisan stopgap spending bill to avert a government shutdown. >> the bill is passed and without objection, the motion to reconsider is laid on the table. >> the deal including $16 billion in disaster relief, requested by the white house, but no new aid for ukraine. speaker kevin mccarthy putting his house leadership on the line, announcing the proposal following weeks of infighting within his own party. >> if you have members in your conference that won't let you

vote for appropriation bills, doesn't want an omnibus and won't vote for a stopgap measure, i don't want to be a part of that team. i want to be a part of a conservative group that wants to get things done. >> house minority leader hakeem jeffries criticizing what he calls the extreme republican. >> the american people have won the extreme maga republicans have lost. it was a victory for the american people and a complete and total surrender by right wing extremists who throughout the year have tried to hijack the congress after the overwhelming bipartisan vote in the house, the bill was then sent to the senate, where some expressed concern over the lack of funding for ukraine. >> we will not stop fighting for more economic and security assistance for ukraine. majority is in both parties support for ukraine aid and doing more is vital for america's security and for democracy around the world. >> but the senate eventually

voting to pass the legislation ahead of the midnight deadline, keeping the government open. the alternative to our action today an entirely avoidable government shutdown. >> m1. >> abc news, washington. to the state capitol now. >> governor gavin newsom's office announced the latest series of bills he both signed and vetoed. the governor vetoed bill sb 799, which would have given unemployment benefits to striking workers. newsom says he supports workers and labor unions, but vetoed the bill because the state already estimates its unemployment budget will be $20 billion in debt by the end of the year. the governor also vetoed a bill that would have enforced safety laws for domestic workers, but he did sign a bill that closes an existing loophole and bolsters eviction protections for renters . well, to weather now. it was a wet start to the weekend in some parts of the bay area, but big changes are on the way. let's check in with spencer. how's it looking?

>> oh, those changes are getting closer and closer. steph, let me show you what we had the last few hours. it was a wet start to the weekend, as you pointed out, looking at the looping live doppler seven image. but you could see it's all pretty much ended now up in the north bay, just a few scattered sprinkles. and as we go into the overnight hours, there will be no rain, but there will be a few clouds around, partly to mostly cloudy skies overnight with low temperatures mainly in the low to mid 50s. so a pleasantly cool overnight tonight with increasingly clear skies highs tomorrow under sunny and dry conditions will range from mid 60s at the coast to mid 70s around the bay shoreline to upper 70s inland. and as we skip ahead just a bit, here's what's coming our way. a huge warm up beginning midweek wednesday, we'll see inland highs around 90 degrees. thursday and friday, we'll be looking at low to mid 90s, almost a summer like warm up in this first full week of october. i'll give you the complete accuweather seven day forecast in just a few minutes. steph spencer thank you. >> one armed robbery suspect is dead and another is injured following a police chase in san

francisco this afternoon. officers from the tenderloin police station spotted a car wanted in connection with an armed robbery and multiple auto burglaries as they prepared to stop the vehicle. but it left the scene and headed for the highway. the car then struck an object near the paul street off ramp and san bruno and mansell. despite life saving measures by police and paramedics, one suspect died at the scene. the other person went to a local hospital in marin county. now a san rafael police officer was injured early this morning after a driver under the influence crashed into a police car. the officer was driving through the intersection at francis eco boulevard east and belem boulevard in san rafael. that's when a speeding driver ran a red light and broadsided the police car. the officer was treated at a hospital for his injuries and later released. the driver was arrested and booked for dui, resulting in injury and driving without a license. still ahead on abc7 news at 11, a holiday tradition is returning to the

the united auto workers union expanded strikes against three automakers yesterday, ordering 7000 more workers to walk off the job in both illinois and michigan. uaw president says ford and gm are refusing to make meaningful progress in contract talks. general motors ceo blames union leaders while ford accuses the uaw of holding up a deal

mainly over union representation at electric vehicle battery plants. the walkouts started 15 days ago. now speaking of that strike, a small group of local supporters rallied in support of uaw autoworkers here in san francisco today. they took their message to the gm cruise lot on 10th street at bryant. >> we're here today in solidarity with the uaw strikers and calling for their victory and also demanding the gm, which owns cruise, actually not fire workers. >> they claim cruise is trying to destroy thousands of drivers jobs with their robo taxis that are blocking the streets of san francisco. supporters say the uaw is fighting for everyone when it calls for better benefits. a shorter workweek and higher pay. well to weather now and a break from the umbrellas for a while, is that right? >> yeah, we had some wet weather earlier today, as you know, into the evening hours as well. just a few hundredths of an inch. not any drenching downpours, but there were some slippery

roadways. you know, it looked kind of dreary. and now all of a sudden, skies are clearing. so here's a look at what's happening and what has been happening on the looping live doppler seven radar image. you can see that there's still some patches of moisture in the atmosphere, but they're drying up pretty much. the rain has ended and skies are at least partly clear at the moment and it is quite a bit cooler right now in most bay area locations than at this hour last night. the 24 hour temperature change shows it's nine degrees cooler in novato, five degrees cooler in san francisco, oakland, three degrees cooler. so that's the pattern going into the midnight hour. and you can imagine that overnight is going to be cooler and probably more comfortable for sleeping than last night was. here's a live view from the sutro tower camera looking out over san francisco, where it's currently 57 degrees. we have 60in oakland, 61 at mountain view and san jose, 57 at both palo alto and half moon bay. nice view, unobstructed view in the absence of clouds looking from emeryville along the bay bridge. other temperature readings right now mid 50s at santa rosa and novato at 60in

napa 57 fairfield, concord 61 and 59 degrees in livermore. and the lovely view from our rooftop camera looking across the calm embark madero. these are our forecast headlines. partly cloudy and cooler overnight, sunnier and drier. tomorrow yay and sunny skies. sunny days and much warmer weather will lie ahead through the coming week. here's our forecast animation starting at midnight, notice it'll be just partly cloudy going into the overnight hours and we'll continue to see a few high clouds passing through the bay area. skies but by 9:00 tomorrow morning, it'll be a sunny start to your sunday and it's going to be sunny. all day. as a matter of fact, overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the mid 50s, a little bit cooler in the farther north locations like napa where it'll drop down to 52 degrees. lakeport and ukiah will have lows dropping into the mid to upper 40s. high temperatures tomorrow under sunny skies, 64 at half moon bay, 69 here in san francisco around the bay shoreline, look for mainly low to mid 70s inland areas. upper 70s for the most part over in

fairfield, perhaps a high of 80 degrees. now, as we skip ahead, the maximum maximum temperature trend looks like this. on wednesday, we'll see highs inland reaching into the upper 80s to low 90s look at thursday and friday, low to mid 90s both of those days in our inland areas. so here is the accuweather seven day forecast. so tomorrow sunnier and drier and then warming begins on monday with inland highs in the low 80s mid 70s around the bay shoreline mid 60s on the coast and temperatures bounce up a bit more on tuesday. but the warmest weather will come wednesday, thursday and friday with inland highs in the low 90s maybe even a few mid 90s in some spots. mitch upper 80s around the bay shoreline and mid to upper 70s around the on the coast which is actually beach weather 70s on the coast in october. >> oh yeah. yeah. it's pretty warm. we'll enjoy it for nice to have a break from the drizzle. yes. spencer do you do you like swimming in the rain?

>> yeah. yeah, i do. do you? >> the reason i ask is because over 500 swimmers participated in the 18th annual swim across america race today. even if it was a little drizzly earlier. that's right. right. yeah. it's an open water swim that starts at the little marina green and finishes at san francisco's aquatic park. among the participle, it's was 16 year old maya marriage from berkeley who participated for her eighth year. now, this one made history recently as one of the youngest swimmers to finish the entire 28.5 miles around manhattan island. wow. all for a great cause. of course, the swim benefits the ucsf benioff children's hospital and maya helped raise $76,000 of the total $386,000 for cancer research. congrats to maya. well a bay area bike riders are also making an impact. the top annual fundraiser for arthritis got underway in san francisco this morning. the california coast

classic, a 525 mile bike tour kicked off at fisherman's wharf. it ends in santa monica next saturday. more than 200 riders are taking part. the eight day event raises more than $1 million for the arthritis foundation. well, a seasonal favorite is back in san jose, just in time for the holidays. this is what it looked like last year when downtown ice was replaced by a roller skating rink. but people made it very clear they preferred a winter tradition rather than a tropical roller rink. the san jose downtown association got the message and scrambled to make it happen. the ice rink will reopen in the circle of palms on november 17th through mid-january. cory certainly be a nice way to ring in the holidays. we'll be right b

well, there's relief here in the bay area now that the government shutdown has been averted. it means big events like fleet week in san francisco will likely still take place. and local national parks will remain open to abc7. news reporter cornell bernard has the details and reaction. >> the navy is optimistic the blue angels will be cleared for takeoff at next week's fleet week air show in san francisco. i believe things look a whole lot better today than they did yesterday. >> we're poised to start fleet week. >> we're ready to go. the navy's brian o'rourke says a government shutdown would have grounded the blue angels and likely diverted navy ships heading to san francisco bay. >> i have almost 1000 sailors

life dream to visit san francisco one day and it wouldn't have been a shame if now alcatraz would have been closed or wildwoods would have been closed or whatever. national park would have been closed. so we were pretty lucky. there yeah. >> in san francisco, cornell, bernard, abc7 news. >> a vietnamese restaurant in the east bay is closing its doors tonight. le cheval is located on clay street in the downtown area. after 38 years, the owner tells abc seven news that rising crime was the reason the family decided to shut down earlier this week, the restaurant joined other small businesses in oakland for a strike to call attention to the impacts rising crime is having on small businesses. the owners of the restaurant say they are looking to relocate the business, but haven't found a new location yet. retail crime was also cited as one of the reasons target is closing stores, including three here in the bay area. those closures will impact those who rely on the pharmacy for prescription medicine. abc7 news reporter answer hassan has the latest.

transparent to ordinary people. a lot of more pharmacy pharmacies optical fulfillment is being done by by pharmacy benefit managers, usually controlled by the insurance company. >> he, according to professor wood, that means insurance companies are filling prescription by mail, which could prove to be more profitable. he doesn't know how that may be impacting the current target cvs partnership, but he believes it's putting pressure on large discount drugstores. >> the insurance company is trying to do the fulfillment themselves that that can be a big problem for the pharmaceutical, for the drugstore business. >> we live in corporate america , right? so ultimately, everything is driven by a profit motive business professor balaraman rajan at cal state east bay says target can't be faulted for closing, since its primary responsibility is to stakeholders, he adds. >> but in a city like oakland, facing rising crime and increasing store closures, the
