happy new year. happy new year. we're done. 2020 is over. come on. 2024. this week it feels nothing like winter. oh, my gosh. it's going to feel very warm out there. the next seven days. we have temperatures this morning, though. you are beginning in a lot of cities from san ramon to napa to novato in the 40s. so there is a bit of a chill in some of our cities that jacket is needed, but you can get rid of it pretty quickly today because we do have mild temperatures and sunny skies on the way. a live look from sfo very limited coastal cloud cover. first thing we have mostly sunny conditions and mild today. temperatures in the 70s and 80s away from the coast. the coastline in in the mid 60s, we will see a lot of sunshine even along the coast as well. but the week ahead, it gets hotter around here. even area wide. by thursday. we are going to see temperatures very warm for this time of the year. we'll look at those details coming up in a few minutes. let's check in with jobina and see how traffic's doing this morning. >> thank you, joe. unfortunately, traffic started off very messy this morning. we're going to begin with a look at two sig alerts that we're

following right now. the first one is going to be in vallejo. it's in the counter commute direction. eastbound 80 before american canyon road. our second crash is going to be in really an updated location. now the chp was originally reporting it in richmond. it's an el sobrante westbound 80 at hilltop drive. we have an overturned vehicle in that spot. speeds down to around 11mph. and then we will end here with a live picture in the south bay where it's nice and clear on 87 in san jose, reggie, thanks, jobina. >> new developments this morning and the replacement for the late california senator dianne feinstein. governor newsom was facing pressure for months to pick a possible replacement. but ever since the late senator ran into failing health, she died last week at the age of 90. governor newsom is appointing democratic party strategist laphonza butler to serve out the remainder of senator feinstein's term until the 2024 election. butler is the current leader of the political action committee emily's list. that group supports democratic women candidates who favor abortion rights, notably, she served as an advisor to the kamala harris

2020 presidential campaign. butler will be the only black woman to serve in the senate and the first openly lgbtq person to represent california in that chamber. governor newsom says butler will move from maryland back here to california and reregister to vote before she's sworn in on wednesday. meanwhile the officer of senator feinstein is releasing plans for her funeral arrangements this week. feinstein will lie in state for public viewing at san francisco city hall on wednesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. a private funeral service is scheduled for thursday at the war memorial theater that will be broadcast to the public at city hall. feinstein then took her final journey back home to san francisco on saturday. her body, accompanied by her daughter, catherine, and former house speaker nancy pelosi. people are out paying their respects all along the way. >> she got everything together. it was a beautiful city. it's still a beautiful city. but she was very well known and she took care of san francisco.

>> she led during a dark time in the city and brought a beacon of light and hope to us. and she will be sorely missed at that was what we heard all throughout san francisco that senator feinstein loved the city and fought for it. >> a book of condolences will be available for you to sign at city hall through wednesday. >> many were calling for governor newsom to tap longtime bay area representative barbara lee to fill that seat. she tweeted in part saying, i quote , wish laphonza be well and look forward to working closely with her to deliver for the golden state. california deserves an experienced senator who will deliver on progressive priorities. that's exactly what i am running to do. and then there's this statement from the current california senator welcoming butler as his new colleague, alex padilla, saying in part, quote, throughout her career, laphonza butler has been a strong voice for working families, lgbtq rights and a champion for increasing women's representation in politics. i'm honored to welcome her to the united states senate to make

with how both sides are now reacting to it. >> thank you, reggie. well, the deal may have gotten done, but it might cost house speaker kevin mccarthy his job. florida house republican matt gaetz is threatening to introduce a motion that would allow house members to eject mccarthy from the speakership with a majority vote. gates does not happy with mccarthy for brokering a deal with democrats and, quote, not reining in spending. it's unclear if that motion would have enough support to remove mccarthy, but some democrats said they are in favor of it as well. the plan includes $16 billion in disaster aid relief and forgoes funding for ukraine a nonstarter for many house republicans who instead want to boost border security spending. republican lindsey graham ■sayig senators are working on legislation to fund both priorities to the republicans who say ukraine doesn't matter to us, you're wrong. >> respectfully, lee, you're wrong. the war gets bigger, not smaller. >> new york house democrat

jamaal bowman is fighting republican accusations that he was obstructing the house's work after setting off a fire alarm on saturday. bowman is calling it a, quote, innocent mistake, saying he was rushing to make a vote and didn't know it would activate the whole building. capitol police are now investigating the fire alarm incident at koumassi. >> thank you, jobina. happening today is the beginning of another fleet week in san francisco. and because of that bill to avoid a government shutdown, the events are going on as planned. abc7 news reporter lena howland giving us a sneak peek at all the fun events from a very special vantage point. lena where are you? well we do have a very special vantage point right now to kick off fleet week. >> we are on the flight deck of a ship that just arrived here from san diego yesterday. and i'm joined now with a representative from the navy this is lieutenant commander chloe morgan. and we appreciate you being awake early for us, chloe, this morning. tell us a little bit about the ship that

we are on. i know we saw a view from below in our last live shot. tell us about this boat. yeah. >> so this is the uss john p murtha. the ships had a very busy year. so in june, they came back from a seven month deployment in the indo-pacific. this summer they were working with nasa, actually working on orion recovery procedures and the most recently, they were all the way up north in the bering sea working with the navy seals. so the ships done a lot of missions. but the most exciting mission yet, maybe the most fun will be san francisco fleet week. so we're very excited to be here. >> and so how can people here in san francisco sort of get involved and maybe even come see this ship for themselves? >> absolutely. so we'll start having public ship tours here at pier 30, 32 on wednesday. so i invite everyone to come out here, interact with our sailors. but even more so, we're going to have sailors and marines on liberty all throughout the city. we're going to have bands do performances. so there's a lot of great opportunities for the citizens of san francisco to meet their military. >> perfect. and i know you were just showing me some of the

numbers here that this is a ship that can fit between 300 to 350 navy sailors. is that correct? >> absolutely. and then what makes it so amazing is it's an amphibious ship. so we actually bring marines, part of a marine expeditionary unit on board during a deployment. in fact, behind us right there, we have a marine helicopter. we're on a large flight deck that can fit multiple aircraft. and then even below us, there's a well deck. so marines are very well suited to this kind of ship. and we work together as a blue green team. >> and what are you looking forward to most about fleet week this year? >> i think it's just honestly interacting with everybody. you know, it's a beautiful time. there's no better time than fall in san francisco. so really going out there, trying the food, getting to see the sights . it's a sailors favorite port call. >> oh, we love to hear that. we love to hear that. well, thank you so much for your time, chloe. we really appreciate it. we're going to be back in the next half hour talking to some more folks up here about what really makes this ship run and

can. we had this level of low pressure right here. that's spinning into utah this morning that brought the showers on saturday. the cooler temperatures to start out the week and that's now pushing off to the east. now we have this ridge of high pressure that is inching closer to california that's supplying us with a lot of sunshine this week and a warming trend over the next couple of days. future weather hour by hour this morning. very limited fog out there. we expect a lot of sunshine even along the coast today. temperatures at or just slightly above average. most of us going into the 70s and 80s by about three, 4 p.m. this afternoon looking at the three day forecast today is sunny and mild. a warming trend begins tomorrow with a lot of sunshine and that warming continues on wednesday. not only low 90s return inland but around the bay shoreline. it's quite warm in the mid 80s. even along the coastline. look at that. we're approaching 80 degrees by wednesday, thursday, even warmer

the white house says borrowers who make more than $15 an hour and enroll are expected to save about $1,000 more per year, compared with other payment options. the program also has an on ramp transition period, which protects your credit if you've missed or if you have late

even the coast is going to feel some very warm temperatures later on. dry skies and sunshine the next seven days. so it's mostly sunny, mild today. very nice this afternoon. we'll begin that warming trend tomorrow and that will continue into wednesday and thursday. overnight tonight, limited fog again along the coast. some cool spots in the 40s around the bay shoreline and we'll settle in the mid 50s. here's future tracker temperatures expect sunshine the next seven days and a warming trend to really get going by midweek. wednesday. you can see we're into the 80 and 90s for the most part, but it looks like our hottest day this week will be on thursday. you can clearly see why along the coast we're in the 80s mid 80s for the city and a lot of 90 for a majority of the region. that does include the east bay. the north bay, the south bay. so we do have a pretty warm week ahead on the seven day forecast. here's all the details. what you need to know. we have sunny and mild temperatures today, warming up as the week goes on. the hottest day of this week is thursday. 80s along the coast 90s for a huge portion of the region and will keep a lot of

is making progress on key issues and recently reached a tentative agreements in four key areas as more than 75,000 health care workers could walk off the job nationwide. that includes nursing assistants, pharmacists, x-ray and lab technicians. important to know doctors and registered nurses would not take part in this strike. governor newsom has vetoed a bill that would have given unemployment benefits to workers while on strike. the bill would have

given striking workers at least two weeks in unemployment pay from the state. newsom says it would expand california's existing federal unemployment benefits. debt it's currently projected to be at $20 billion by the end of the year. newsom also voiced support for workers and their right to strike, wanting to continue progress in improving workers conditions. new this morning, the nobel prize in medicine has been awarded to the scientists behind the covid 19 vaccine. katalin kariko and drew weissman are being recognized for their work on the mrna vaccines that help play a key role in slowing the spread of covid. they originally published their research on the mrna mrna vaccine in 2005, but it received little attention at that time. the nobel prize committee says their work was fundamental to develop the groundbreaking vaccine. next to 630, former president trump expected to be in court today. what he is saying about fraud charges against him and what we've learned about the funeral plans for the late smash mouth singer steve harwell. they're

newsom kept his promise to name a black woman to the post jobina is tracking the latest on the governor's pick from the live desk. >> jobina. thank you, kamasi. good morning. laphonza butler will fill the vacant us senate seat held by the late senator dianne feinstein. nine. butler is no stranger to politics. she is a democratic strategist and a former adviser to vice president kamala harris. butler will be the only black woman serving in the us senate and the first openly lgbt plus person to represent california in the chamber. governor newsom keeping his pledge to appoint a black woman if the seat became available, he issued this statement reading in part, quote, lafond's will carry the baton, left by senator feinstein. continue to break glass ceilings and fight for all californians in washington, dc. the with butler selection to the senate, she will step down from her role as president of emily's list, a political organization that supports democratic women candidates who favor abortion rights. she's also a former

labor leader with seiu 2015. for a time, butler was also a partner at san francisco based bear star strategies. newsome top political consulting firm butler could be sworn in as early as tomorrow when the senate returns to session. reggie jobina, thank you. >> former president trump is expected to be in new york state court this morning for opening statements in his civil fraud trial. he's not expected to speak during the proceedings, but he will appear when the state calls him as a witness in the case. the new york state attorney general accuses trump and his family business of inflating his net worth by more than $2 billion. that led insurers and lenders to give trump better terms. opening statements are scheduled for 7 a.m. our time. >> man accused of stabbing and killing tech executive bob lee is back in court today. nima momeni pleaded not guilty to a murder charge back in august. the hearing today will set a date for an upcoming trial. the judge could also rule among many requests for release as well. many waived his right to a

speedy trial, giving his attorneys more time to prepare. >> a man is under arrest in san francisco for what police believe are four random assaults , three of them stabbings. officers say they responded to a report of an assault near market and battery streets yesterday morning. police didn't give details about the attack, but around that same time, officers say they got reports of a stabbing near fourth and market just a half mile away. police detained a man at the scene and believe that he is a suspect in both attacks. all four people were taken to the hospital. we don't know their condition. a man missing in the waters off the marin county coast is believed to have been attacked by a shark. >> the first 911 messages came from satellite communications at 1030 yesterday morning. callers were at wildcat beach, north of bolinas, in a remote part of the point raised national seashore there. a witness said a man was in the water with a group when a shark attacked him. other members of the group managed to get out of the ocean. one ran to a camper. that happened to have a satellite phone that helped to

exciting for everyone. >> yeah, and tell us what's so special about your ship. >> so this is a san antonio class, amphibious transport dock. it's used to. our weapon is the marines. we put the marines ashore and support them. we're standing on the flight deck. a big capability there. we have a well deck below us with several transport ships that can come in and out of the out of this ship. but that's our main weapon is putting the marines ashore and supporting them. >> amazing. and today, i know you were just telling me behind the scenes, you guys will be working on an exercise today with maybe some local crews as well. can you talk to me about what that is? >> you bet. so it's defense support to civil authorities. we're going to set up our equipment out in town. and it's a communications exercise that's going to use the marine corps, the navy, coast guard as well as your local police department and fire department are going to all work together in this exercise in case of a disaster response. we would be there ready to
