bullets flying, hitting a window and people getting trampled. >> it all unfolded at morgan state university in baltimore. several people were wounded. police overnight finally lifted the shelter in place order overnight. gunfire erupting on the campus of morgan state university in baltimore, where students and alumni have been celebrating homecoming week. when is morgan going to send an email? yeah, videos show the massive police response. a helicopter hovering above as first responders place someone on a stretcher. students were told to shelter in place, too. >> we just saw a swarm of students running and heard gunshots. and then that's when we got the alert that there was an active shooting on campus. >> get up. >> students posting videos showing swat teams in tactical gear, going door to door, working to clear dorm rooms. a city council member says police told him that three people fired into a crowd, wounding at least five people. all of them with non-life threatening injuries. but no arrests immediately reported as the fbi joined the investigation. the shooting taking place near the

university's fine arts center. the venue hosted an event last night. the coronation of mister and miss morgan state. it's unclear if the shooting is related to the event. around 2:00 in the morning, baltimore's mayor delivering this message when is enough going to be enough? >> when will the sanctity of american lives and the sanctity of american college students and students to get their education an outweigh the sanctity of american guns? that's where my anger is tonight. >> the mayor also discussed the importance of addressing mental health for of the five victims are students. police have not confirmed the number of shooters involved. the other big story this morning, for the first time in the history of congress, lawmakers have removed the speaker of the house. >> and last night, the now former speaker, kevin mccarthy said he will not run again for the position with no succession plan. >> there is chaos and adding to the uncertainty, the house has adjourned until next week. >> but overnight, abc news learned at least three names could be under consideration to replace mccarthy. it comes as some republicans suggest former

president donald trump for the job. >> abc's liz landers is here now with the latest. liz good morning. >> good morning. rhiannon this historic turn of events has essentially paralyzed congress with just over a month until another potential government shutdown, the yays are 216, the nays. are 210. this morning, the capitol in chaos after that historic vote in the house. >> the office of speaker of the house of the united states. house of representatives is hereby declared vacant. >> eight republicans led by far right florida congressman matt gaetz, and joined by all democrats, voted to remove kevin mccarthy as speaker, a humiliating defeat. mccarthy served only nine months, the second shortest tenure of any speaker in us history. his term bookended by republican infighting. it took 15 votes for him to become speaker back in january, forcing him to make concessions to far right members , including a rule change that would allow a single lawmaker to

call for a vote to remove him. that concession proved to be mccarthy's downfall. >> all he has failed to take a stand where it matters. so if he won't, i will. >> congressman matt gaetz targeted mccarthy for working with democrats last weekend to pass a bill to keep the government funded until november . >> you can say the seeds of this were planted by all of the deals he cut back in january. you could also say the seeds of this were planted by the rise of the maga movement inside the republican party over the last 8 or 9 years. even though donald trump was was on the outside of this this deal. his fingerprints are all over it. >> in a news conference last night, mccarthy said he has no regrets but said he won't run for speaker again. >> our government is designed to find compromise and i don't regret my efforts to build coalitions and find solutions. i was raised to solve problems, not create them. >> but mccarthy is saying the move to oust him was about more than politics. >> you all know matt gaetz. you know, it was personal. it had

nothing to do about spending. it all was about getting attention from you. i mean, we're getting email fundraisers from him as he's doing it. join in quickly. that's not governing. >> he pointed the finger at democrats claiming former speaker nancy pelosi assured him that democrats would have his back if republicans tried to oust him. in the end, democrats grew furious with mccarthy, citing what they describe as broken promises along with his tv appearance this past sunday, where he appeared to blame democrats for wanting a government shutdown. the house is now left without a speaker, meaning no legislation can be brought to the house floor and nothing will be resolved for at least a week. that's because the house has adjourned until next wednesday as republicans try to plot their next move. sources say majority leader steve scalise, who's undergoing treatment for blood cancer, is calling members to gauge their support for him. if he throws his hat in the ring for speaker. ohio congressman jim jordan also

abc's eric katersky tells us that's not stopping trump from criticizing the case. >> mr. president, why did you decide to come? you didn't have to. i don't have to because this trial is a rigged trial. >> the judge already found that trump committed fraud by inflating the value of his assets. >> he still has to determine how much trump will have to pay. smoke from a brush fire could be to blame for this massive highway pile up in arkansas. >> at least 15 vehicles were involved near the city of cash. two people there were killed. police say smoke from a nearby brush fire reduced visibility in that area. we are in mourning those words from the mayor of venice, italy, after a fiery bus crash left at least 21 people dead, including tourists and two children. the vehicle was headed to a campsite when it crashed off of an elevated road. reports say the driver may have fallen ill just before the crash. >> new details about the man accused of abducting a nine year old girl from a campground in upstate new york. the albany times union reports 47 year old craig ross junior was the

subject of a recent police investigation into claims that he abused a young girl. but the investigation was reportedly closed last month with no charges filed. police are trying to figure out how nine year old charlotte snow was abducted saturday after going for a bike ride. they found her monday in the closet of a camper behind the suspect's mother's home 22 miles away. >> she was alert. she was conscious. she was talking physically, looking at her. she looked like she was doing well. >> what she excited to see officers? was she emotional? >> she was very emotional. >> police say they found no connection between charlotte and the suspect. >> it is time now for a look at your wednesday weather. the skies over florida yesterday were blamed on smoke that drifted all the way from the wildfires up in canada. the air quality was considered unhealthy in some areas. that smoke will linger into today. looking at the radar, a cold front moves

sky, crashing into a home in newberg. one of the two people on board was killed. investigators say no one was inside that house at the time. the cause of the crash is under investigation and a wild hit and run crash in florida. police say a woman kept driving, even with the victim still on the hood of her car. he's okay. the driver claimed he jumped on the hood. she's now facing charges as first it was the hollywood writers and actors, then the autoworkers. >> and today, health care workers are set to go on strike. this walkout could be historic. abc's lionel moise explains why . >> this morning, more than 75,000 kaiser permanente employees are preparing to strike over what they say are unfair labor practices. it's expected to be the largest health care worker strike in us history. workers are demanding higher pay and more resources. >> health care workers should be able to focus on taking care of patients when they're at work.

they shouldn't have to worry about where they're going to sleep at at night. the coalition of kaiser permanente union says the pandemic deteriorate working conditions and exacerbated a staffing crisis. >> the unions blame unsafe staffing levels for long wait times, patient neglect and even misdiagnoses somewhere. >> right now, someone's loved one is in a kaiser hospital and they're pushing a call button for help and they are not receiving help in a timely fashion because we do not have the staff to respond. and that has dire consequences. >> employees are expected to walk off the job for three days in california, colorado, maryland, oregon, virginia, washington and washington, dc. >> everybody from the admitting clerk to the last person you'll see as you get ready to go under surgery are our members. >> kaiser permanente telling abc news a strike is not inevitable . all and it is certainly not justified. kaiser says despite an acute shortage of health care

workers nationwide, it's hired more than 50,000 frontline workers in the last two years, adding, we expect to reach the 10,000 new hire goal by the end of october, if not sooner. and we won't stop there. kaiser permanente says it has plans in place to keep hospitals and emergency departments open in the strike, but it may reschedule non-emergency and elective procedures. and also send some prescriptions to outpatient pharmacies. rhiannon andrew, a final thank you. >> amazon is accused of using a secret algorithm to drive up prices on its site and across the e-commerce industry. the algorithm code named project nessie, would reportedly inflate prices, then monitor whether competitors like target did the same. nessie allegedly let amazon know how high the prices could go. the wall street journal reports details about the algorithm, which stopped in 2019, were included in the ftc's antitrust lawsuit against amazon. the company has said the ftc is wrong on the facts and

and dirt bikers riding through philadelphia sunday night. one biker is seen climbing on top of nikki bullock's car, using his feet to stomp out the rear window with bullock's two small children in the back seat. >> i have a guardian angel. thank god, watching over them because there's not a single scratch on either one of them. >> bullock gets out of the car as the man picks up a gun that you see had fallen from his waistband and points it at her. >> i already seen the gun. he was already trying to point it in the car. anyway, that's why i continued to jump on the windshield. he already went through the windshield. i might as well get out. >> bullock standing her ground, even pushing the biker off his bike before he flees the scene. bullock says the dispute began when she changed lanes around the horde of bikers and then argued with the suspect before he smashed her back window. the district attorney calls the bikers behavior outrageous. a really disturbing video there. police say they have identified a person of interest in the case, but as of last night, still no arrests. >> an alert for travelers, luggage thefts at airports are
