>> i just thought they won the entire first round of the series, not one game. but good for them. good luck the rest of the way. >> and this is being nice. okay. very nice. thank you, michael. also ahead, the ups and downs on wall street. let's take a live look at the stock exchange. tensions are high after stocks tumbled. rebecca jarvis will break it down with how it will impact your wallet. we're going to begin with the developments on capitol hill. house speaker kevin mccarthy ousted. members of his own party led the charge to remove him. this is unprecedented. no speaker has ever been put down this way. our senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is on capitol hill with the latest. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning. this was an extraordinary showdown never seen before in american history. kevin mccarthy facing a rebellion from members of his own party, becoming the first speaker to be voted out of the house throwing the chamber into chaos and uncertainty. this morning for first type in american history, the house of representatives voting to remove its speaker.

>> the office of speaker of the house of the united states house of representatives is hereby declared vacant. >> reporter: a handful of far right republicans turning again kevin mccarthy after he worked with democrats to make a short term deal to keep the government funded. do you think mccarthy could ever bang the speaker's gavel again? >> no. >> reporter: mccarthy was silent as he left the house chamber. hours later a sudden and unexpected announcement. he will not run for speaker again. >> i don't regret standing up for choosing governance over grievance. i do not regret negotiating. our government is designed to find compromise. >> reporter: mccarthy has been facing threats to his speakership from the moment he clinched the gavel. he won on the 15th round, only after making concession after concession to appeal to the far right wing of his party allowing a single lawmaker to call a vote to remove him. facing a mutiny, mccarthy realizing the odds were stacked

against him. he would need democrats to bail him out. do you need their help to remain in leadership? >> no. if five republicans go with democrats, then i'm out. probably so. >> reporter: in the end, eight republicans joined all democrats to oust him as speaker. >> we need a speaker who will fight for something, anything! >> if this house of representatives has exceeded all expectations, then we definitely need higher expectations. >> reporter: it left the vast majority of republicans, who were squarely behind mccarthy, infuriated. >> it is a total distraction. it is a pseudo political fetish we don't have time for. >> reporter: on the way out, blasting the republican rebels that sank his speakership. >> they don't get to say they're conservative because they're angry and chaotic. that's not the party i belong to. >> reporter: but those who voted to remove him already eager to move on. >> our bench is very deep.

there's a lot of people that could serve very well in that position. >> reporter: so this morning there is no permanent speaker. all action will be halted in the house until next week when republicans try to find a new one. for now, congressman patrick mchenry will serve in a temporary role, but votes have been cancelled for the week. members are now leaving town. the deadline for the government shutdown looming large, right before thanksgiving, george. >> thank you very much. let's get more from jonathan karl. jon, the speaker probably sealed his own fate with the deal he made to become speaker many months ago. >> reporter: he only had a five seat majority. he gave in to the hard liners in his caucus. basically gave him everything they demanded to become speaker including the ability to recall him as speaker, calling for a vote with a single member. but, george, look. he spent much of his speakership trying to appease people who were never going to be appeased, doing whatever he could to appreciate and get the support of the hard liners.

in the end, it was only eight of them that voted to get rid of him. he could have been saved by democrats, george, but in the end he couldn't be saved by democrats because he alienated them so thoroughly during the course of his speakership. >> jon, given the divisions in the republican party, particularly in the house, this seems like an impossible job. what do we know about the race to replace him? >> reporter: well, this may simply be an ungovernable majority. we know steve scalise was running, jim jordan who was an ally of mccarthy also seems to be weighing a run. it's unclear anybody can get the support that's needed. the demands now are getting more extreme. one republican, a republican not named by matt gaetz is demanding the justice department investigation into donald trump be defunded by congress, by the house, as a condition to get her vote. these are demands that really can't be met and, of course, moderates would object to. it's unclear that anybody can win.

if anybody can win, can they actually govern any more effectively than mccarthy could? >> two big questions. thank you very much. robin? >> george, now to breaking news overnight. a mass shooting at morgan state university in baltimore, maryland. faith abubey is there on the scene and has the latest for us. good morning, faith. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin police have lifted the shelter in place order here at morgan univeuniversity. they say five people were shot, four of them students. they all survived. but the shooting i.n.s. department has left this community terrified for hours. overnight gun fire erupting on the campus of morgan state univerity in baltimore in the middle of homecoming week celebrations. students and alumni running for cover, telling us they heard multiple rounds of gun fire around 9:30 p.m. >> everybody kind of started alerting the people next to them that there was an active shooter and we should all brace ourselves. >> it was terrifying because i'm

hospitals and ers would remain open, not emergency procedures likely face delays. well kaiser telling us overnight that several provisions have been agreed upon as negotiations are ongoing. george. >> okay, marla, thanks. we're gonna get the latest now on donald trump after the former president defamed a court employee on social media, he's facing a gag order from the judge in his civil fraud trial. it bars trump from commenting on members of the court staff, senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is tracking the case. good morning, aaron. >> george, good morning to you. former president trump is returning here for his civil trial after he was hit with that limited gag order. he angered the judge with a social media post disparaging the judge's law clerk and judge arthur engoron scolded trump about personal attacks on court staff and warned of serious sanctions if it happens again. trump does not have to be here, but he speaks frequently in the hallway to reporters complaining about the judge and also the woman who brought the case, new york attorney general letitia james. her team has been questioning an accountant who testified trump

controlled the financial statements that the judge has already said were fraudulent because they made him seem far richer than he actually was. and with trump looking on a defense attorney questioned the accountant, marveling at how he prepared the tax returns for the 45th president of the united states, adding maybe even the 4040 seventh president of the united states. that drew a laugh in the courtroom, george, but it shows how trump is trying to use his legal peril to every political advantage. >> george and aaron, that statement about the court and play just one of a series of inflammata statements the former president has made in recent days and weeks, including calling for the death penalty. the former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. and now he's facing the prospect of a second gag order. >> he is george special counsel jack smith has asked a federal judge in washington to impose a gag order against trump, citing what smith called his disparaging and inflammatory attacks with this potentially costly civil case. and for

you can imagine how difficult this is for her family, feeling like they don't have answers. we first covered this story in march when the former u.s. team swimmer jamie cail was found dead in the virgin islands. authorities there claim she died of an accidental drug overdose, but her family suspects foul play. a grieving family this morning demanding answers in the death of their daughter a former swimming star found dead in the u.s. virgin islands. >> jamie was getting ready to leave the island on march 14th. she was coming home. it makes no sense. all the evidence out there has been completely overlooked. what we are looking for is justice for jamie. we're looking for truth. >> reporter: pat and gary cail claim island authorities haven't been forthcoming with details in their daughter' death, limiting access to information and with holding an official copy of the autopsy. >> we had somebody that we authorized to go to the funeral

home and to view. that's all they would allow us. that's all they would allow her to see. she photographed the face. we don't know what the rest -- if there's anything else on the rest of the body. we don't have the autopsy report. >> reporter: the family sharing those photos, too graphic to show here with abc news. >> she had a black eye. her forehead appeared to have had blunt trauma to the forehead. it appeared her nose had been broken. her lips had blood around them. >> reporter: cail was a high school champion swimmer from maine winning a gold medal in the 1997 pan pacific championship 800 free relay. she then notched silver at the 1998 swimming world cup in brazil. she lived in the u.s. virgin

islands for nearly two decades. the 42-year-old was found unresponsive in her home by her boyfriend back in february. according to the original police release, cail's boyfriend, with the help of a friend, then took cail to a nearby clinic where cpr was rendered, but cail succumbed to her ailment. months later authorities say she died of an accidental fentanyl overdose. her family insists jamie didn't use drugs. >> never. jamie cail never did drugs. never. >> there is no way that she had fentanyl in her voluntarily. >> her family believes critical evidence like those facial injuries are being overlooked. we reached out to officials to ask about the investigation and unexplained injuries, but haven't heard back. >> tough on that family. thank you, janai. now to the water crisis in louisiana. an effort is under way to stop salt water from infiltrating water systems for more than 1 million people. ginger's in new orleans with the

story. hey, ginger. >> hey, george. i'm at the base of the steps of jackson square where on an average year the mississippi river comes right up to here. so obviously it is very low. actually approaching historic lows for the second year in a row. that is allowing the saltwater in. so we went with the army corps of engineers on an urgent mission to prevent a water crisis right here in new orleans. it's been months since mitch and 4,000 others have been able to confidently use the water that comes out of their tap. >> we got word on june 19th that the chloride level had risen from 250 to 700 and something parts per million overnight. >> wow. >> it sparked panic. >> chloride is salt that came up from the gulf of mexico into their water. >> people don't realize just how porpt water is to us. when you see it shut down schools, business, changing people's lives.

>> reporter: mitch lives about an hour south of new orleans, but the salt water is now moving up that river. more than 1 million people in new orleans are now within 9 -- 19 days of salt water polluting their water supply for the fir time since 1998. >> unfortunately, the last two years we've seen the flows low enough to where the gulf of mexico started to creep into the state. >> reporter: historically low levels sinking land, a rising sea an constantly changing river structure are all making this slow moving disaster. earlier this summer, the army corps of engineers built a sill. it's basically an under water barrier to keep the salt water out but that sill over topped and just last week they had to start building it higher. while they work on building that up, they are barging in water. this barge came from up river where it grabbed half million gallons of fresh water. then brought it down here, pumped it into the waet treatment facility so they can dilute the salt water they're taking in.

it's a 24/7 operation. they've also brought in reverse osmosis machines that can desalinate the water. >> these are the mandates. these are temporary fixes. we need to revamp all of our water plants. water leaves so does the quality of life. >> reporter: it is so imminent that the sewer and water board of new orleans is actually moving forward with a plan to build a pipeline that will take water from 12 miles up and dump it at their intake on top of all the barging. it is an expensive project. they're going to have to move fast to beat this salt water. to make this change, you need rain, not here. you need rain for the ohio river, missouri river and the north branch of the mississippi. it's going to take weeks for it to get here. it's got to fall. in the near term forecast, even the next month, the local

>> we are back with a new study on the active ingredient in ozempic and wegovy looking at its long term impact on weight loss and diabetes. our medical correspondent dr. sutton is here to break it all down. 23,000 people for three years. >> three years. what can you tell us about the study? >> this is one of the first studies that found the benefits of semaglutide. that active ingredient in wegovy and ozempic. it was funded by the creators of ozempic and wegovy but completed by an independent research team. they looked at adults with type 2 diabetes who were taking weekly injections of semaglutide. they found after six months those adults had an average of ten pounds weight loss and had better glycemic control, by tracking the lab test a1c.

delegates from all over the world are gathering to discuss how to deal with the most contentious issues facing the catholic church. foreign correspondent james longman is live in vatican city. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, michael. pope francis is convening a global gathering here in rome to discuss the future of the catholic church. for the first time lay people and women will vote on specific issues alongside bishops and other clergy. that is a radical change. it was part of the pope's effort to make the vatican accessible. they will discuss some of the most controversial issues of the day, including the role of women and greater inclusion of lgbt people. there have already been some major disagreements over the issues. five of the most conservative cardinals wrote to francis saying it was confusion. they asked for clarity on same sex unions. seems the pope is keen to tackle these criticisms head on.

he published his response. he made it clear he would not stand in the way of blessings of same sex unions in church. that is not marriage, but it's still a major reversal. francis told them with much sincerity, i tell you it's not good to be afraid of these issues. robin? >> congratulations. i know you recently got married. i think on the same day i got married. congratulations. >> reporter: thank you so much. >> we're going to turn to amazon's secret algorithm. rebecca jarvis is back with how it would reportedly drive up prices on its site. good morning again, rebecca. >> reporter: nice to see you again, robin. that's right. this secret algorithm was code named project nessie. that's according to redacted documents in a case against amazon. those documents portray a company that would use that algorithm to raise prices and watch competitors to see if they follow, forcing prices higher for consumers. the algorithm was allegedly used to track and under cut

competitor, so if a competing retailer lowered the price or discounted the price, amazon would follow to try to eat up that business as well. the company stopped using the algorithm in 2019. a source telling the wall street journal that amazon made more than $1 billion in revenue through use of the algorithm. amazon declining to comment on that, but saying to abc news that the ftc is wrong on the facts and the law, noting project nessie had a simple purpose. to try to stop price matching from resulting in unusual outcomes where prices became so low that they were unsustainable. this is all part, guy, of the larger lawsuit the ftc has brought against amazon, claiming that it is too powerful, too much of a monopoly. now legal experts do say it could be a tricky road ahead for regulators, as they've never brought a case quite like this against a company as big as amazon. guys? >> rebecca jarvis, thanks.

there is a misconception there that you have to wait 24 hours to report a missing child. that's simply not true. not only did they report her right away, they provided recent photos, including a photo of the shirt that she was even wearing that day. the most important tool when it comes to recovery of a child is usually a photo of the child. the parents being able to recall height, weight, hair color, eye color, even providing photos is likely the reason she's home safe. >> how should parents begin to talk to their kids about this? >> well, we have to start early talking to our kids about safety an making sure it's simple messaging and making it easy for them to understand. there are programs like kid smart that uses the four personal rules of safety. we want to point out who are adults that children can go to in a time of need? who are these trusted adults? remember to travel in a group. there's always power in numbers. they should know their full names, address, telephone number and how to call 911. >> we saw that little girl use the code word. very smart. >> absolutely. it's a great trick. i had one when i was little. it was sesame street. i think i'm old enough now to reveal that secret pass word.

as we saw in that case, it works. these little tips and tricks is how we keep our children safe. >> what should kids do when they fine themselves in an uncomfortable situation? >> well, first of all, if anyone tries to grab them or makes them feel sad, scared, confused or uncomfortable, they should go to a trusted adult. they have a right to safety. they have a right to say no. so many kids are taught to respect their elders. but again, if someone makes them feel sad, scared, confused, uncomfortable, tries to grab them, they have the right to say no and fight back and then tell a trusted adult what happened. >> what kind of technology do you recommend for parents? >> there's a lot of great devices out there. gps trackers. there are watches that are two way communication just between the parent and the child. some that have fixed numbers so the child can call mom, dad, maybe grandma or grandpa. there are some great devices out there. i recommend any family that feels the need to use something

calorie counting. >> i was shocked to see that i was probably consuming 4,000 to 5,000 calories a day. it was humbling. >> reporter: for his age and activity level, jamie should have been getting 3,300 a day. so he joined an app for counting calories and cut it to 2,200 a day for weight loss. while the pounds came off, he never deprived himself of his favorite foods. >> i'm going to have pizza. i'm just gonna budget that into my calorie allotment for the day. >> reporter: he was already walking miles every day. at some point he started running, sharing his journey on tik tok. >> doing a 5k. now i'll finish it up with a seven mile walk. >> reporter: this type of dramatic weight loss is likely not possible for most people. dr. veronica johnson, who is not jamie's physician, said anyone making significant changes to their diet should talk with a doctor. >> i think taking a step back and looking at your overall health and when you have these things in a better place, your overall health is improved.

she is all about soup. it is that time of year, after all. it's your take on homestyle chicken soup. >> right. >> i love that idea. why do you say -- by the way, i totally agree. tell everybody your opinion on why soup is a go to must. >> absolutely. soup is a meal in one. it's great for meal prep. it's so easy. >> i get a little intimidated by soups. why do you think they are so easy? >> easy ingredients. simple process. i'm going to show you how to make this taste good. >> let's do it. you have a spin on bone broth. can you explain? >> i think bone broth gives the soup the best flavor. we've got bone broth and water. we are going to season that further with salt and pepper and bay leafs. >> you just pop those right in. >> i like to add those in early because it infuses the liquid with even more flavor. >> love it. >> i'm going to have you add the chicken breast.

those are bone in. if you add bone in chicken, it adds even more flavor to the broth. all these tips are important. it's going to taste amazing. >> i have never heard of leaving the bone in and putting it in there. that's really smart. >> we're going to let that cook. meanwhile, we're going to saute the veggies. we're going to add a little bit of olive oil. >> you've got everything chopped. carrots, celery, onion. >> these are the aromatics. they add more flavor to the soup. we're going to saute those until they are softened and golden. >> oil? or no? >> little bit. we did add a little bit of oil. just enough to get that going. >> we have a lot of interest in the studio today. everybody loves their chicken soup. >> everybody is hungry. >> yep. >> once that's sauteed and golden, we're going to add that to the pot. get all the flavor out of the pan. >> is it true bone broth is -- grandma always said chicken soup

makes you feel better when you're not feeling well. bone broth does have a lot of properties that are good for us. >> it does. it has a lot of healing properties. we're going to add the pasta. any small cut pasta works great here. >> i love that. >> we're going to add that and let it cook for five minutes. one thing with pasta, don't add too much. remember, you're making a soup and not a casserole. if you add too much, it will get too i thick. >> i like a chunky soup. >> it's still hearty. >> again, i agree. then chicken? >> add that back to the pot. all right. now here's the secret for soup. it's all in the finishes. we're using fresh herbs. i'm youing dill and parsley. we're going to add those. if you want to use dry herbs, that's totally fine. >> that's a good question. fresh or dry? >> if you want to use dry herbs just add them to the liquid early on because they need time to hydrate and release their flavor.

>> something you can do last minute. >> all right. one thing that i learned from my mother for making the soup vibrant an flavorful, adding fresh garlic at the end. most people will saute their garlic with their veggies early on. but if you add it at the end it gives it a punch but not overwhelming. >> yes. >> while you do that, you have a wonderful bread that you love. milk bread. >> these are soft. they pull apart with layers. they are amazing. they are so easy. you can bake them in a regular cake pan. they're also make ahead, so any time you bake fresh bread, if you freeze it the same day they're made, it will -- when you thaw it, it will be just like you made it fresh. >> okay. maybe do two, save one in the freezer and when they thaw, they taste like fresh? >> absolutely. >> that's a great tip. i love that. all of these recipes are in your cookbook. thank you so much. it smells so good here.
