senator dianne feinstein as well as her friends and family descend upon san francisco city hall to pay their respects. good evening. i'm ahmad daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thank you for joining us. the late senator lying in state at san francisco city hall. >> and we have abc seven news team coverage. stephanie sierra has details on the final preparations underway for tomorrow's memorial service. that's in a moment. >> but let's begin with abc7 news reporter cornell bernard who is live at city hall where people have been paying their respects to the late senator all day long. today cornell. >> yeah, in fact, dan and hundreds of people from across the bay area still coming here to san francisco city hall to pay respects to senator feinstein. i have to tell you, it is a rare hot day in the city, but many folks say that's okay. they did not mind waiting in line to pay respects to the woman they loved and admired. city hall's rotunda echoing with music on this solemn day, one by

one, members of the public filing by the flag draped casket to pay respects and say goodbye to us. senator dianne feinstein in the place where her political career began. >> sad day, but a beautiful but a beautiful legacy. >> tracy sherman and joann loulan say defi was their hero. >> i think dianne feinstein has been just an incredible trailblazer for an amazing woman , and she's done a lot for our city and our state. and i wanted to pay my respects to what she did for gun control, for lgbtq rights, for women in for women in the senate, for getting women in the senate and the house. >> i mean, she was everybody's godmother. you know, she was like, come on in. i'm going to show you how to do it. and we're going to rock this place. and she did. >> by midday, the line to get into city hall, stretching down van ness avenue as the sun was hot. but many didn't care, waiting almost an hour to pay respects. >> all the things she worked on,

all the things she did, the way she fought for, the things she believed in. you know something you don't see very much anymore. >> i remember her coming out of the mayor's office after milk and moscone were killed and she held it together remarkably well for being panicked on the inside. >> i met some of feinstein over the years. i found her to be a very warm person. i absolutely love what she did as our mayor of san francisco. absolutely loved. she supported education. i'm retired educator mayor london breed paying respects to her predecessor alongside dr. anthony fauci, a familiar face from the covid pandemic breed says feinstein was a woman of firsts. >> you know what needs to also be at the top of that list is, you know how to be a courageous leader. >> how to lead with courage, even when it's not always popular outside an american flag draped between two san francisco fire trucks, sfpd officers standing to salute feinstein's casket as it arrived at city hall. >> that salute was all about

paying tribute to a person that gave so much to the city. this state and this country. it's a fitting tribute for one of our greatest leaders. >> if you'd like to pay your respects, there is still time. city hall will be open until 7 p.m. the san francisco gay men's chorus is scheduled to perform in about an hour, about 6 p.m. in the rotunda. we just checked average wait times to get into city hall, about 25 minutes. that is through security. we. we're live in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc7 news. okay cornell, thanks very much. >> we've just learned the city hall memorial service that will be held tomorrow afternoon for senator feinstein will be private due to heightened security. only people with invitations will be allowed to attend. dozens of members of the congressional delegation are flying in today but as abc7 news reporter stephanie sierra has learned, house republicans are making travel difficult. she joins us live from the newsroom to explain exactly what's going on. steph.

>> yes, dan, i just spoke with congressman mike thompson who explained the house republican leadership did not allow a plane to transport the late senator's colleagues from d.c. to san francisco to attend tomorrow's memorial service. here's what we know after senator dianne feinstein passed representative zoe lofgren contacted then-speaker kevin mccarthy to request air transportation for her colleagues in the house to attend the memorial service, a courtesy any delegation has traditionally been afforded. when a member passes away so they can all fly together. but lofgren never heard back from mccarthy. congressman mike thompson says lofgren made the same request of speaker pro tem patrick mchenry, the person who kicked speaker emerita. nancy pelosi, out of her capitol office. but mchenry also did not respond. >> it's just sad commentary on the house republican leadership that they wouldn't pay a tribute to this great legislator, great senator, and allow allow a plane to bring her colleagues back to

pay her final tribute. it's just going to be more difficult. and i'm assuming that some people will not be able to make it because of that. >> and we're also told vice president kamala harris plane only had eight seats left, which would help bring a limited number of the delegation. now, that plane is scheduled to arrive tonight back on capitol hill, a day full of tributes honoring the late senator friend , a hero for so many, a leader who changed the nature of the senate and the fabric of the nation in a titan in us policy mix and proud daughter of san francisco, soon to be laid to rest, the late senator dianne feinstein, a trailblazing force of firsts. san francisco's first female mayor and the longest serving female senator lying in state at city hall. feinstein's daughter, catherine joined close friends speaker emerita nancy pelosi, her husband paul, and their eldest daughter, nancy, to

pay their respects. meantime in washington, the late senator's seat draped in black, accompanied by white roses as the senate judiciary committee convened in tribute today, there are 24 women serving in this chamber, and every one of them would admit they stand on diane's shoulders. senate majority leader chuck schumer is one of at least six speakers who will honor senator feinstein during thursday's memorial service outside city hall include a recorded message from president joe biden. remarks from vice president kamala harris. speaker emerita. nancy pelosi. san francisco mayor, london breed and eileen mariano, feinstein's granddaughter. >> you know, for generations of californians, she was the one that we turned to for leadership and for comfort. a champion in politics to policy tsay feinstein never backed down. >> and to be able to sit in her seat knowing that i will never be able to fill her shoes. >> an icon, a friend, a trailblazer to many in washington, an on both sides of

the aisle. >> she was an exceptional leader . obviously, her work in san francisco when she became mayor , healing this town, dealing with hiv aids. >> she's a legend and an iconic legislator and policy maker. so we all want to be there to pay our respects and to show her family and our community how much she meant to us. >> now, congressman thompson and congressman garamendi arrived at sfo this afternoon. they will be joined by congresswoman anna issue and congresswoman zoe lofgren to attend the service. and as of just a few minutes ago, we've learned there are two other planes that are transport sitting members of the senate delegation, but one of them is already delayed due to maintenance issues. and it's still unclear if it will be fixed in time, which may further restrict travel while the other plane is set to arrive later this evening. dan bit complicated. >> stephanie, thank you. you can

temperatures between 85 and 102 degrees with above average temperatures. those that are sensitive to the heat will likely need to take precautions. but everybody needs to take precautions. we're talking about moderate to major risk of heat illnesses. let's go hour by hour . i'll show you what you can expect. this evening at 6:00. still warm in the 70s and 80s as we head towards late night temps features start to drop, but it's not going to be that much cooler until tomorrow morning when those numbers begin with mainly 50s and 60. i'll let you know exactly where they'll end up tomorrow afternoon coming up. >> alma all right, sandhya, thank you. >> now to our developing story on the largest health care worker strike in us history. as 75,000 employees walk out on oakland based kaiser permanente today, the action could mean delayed appointments, lab results and even prescriptions for thousands of patients. abc7 news reporter anzar hassan joins us live in walnut creek with the very latest on this answer. dan good evening. >> we just got word from kaiser

that today's negotiations ended without a settlement that likely means there will be a second day of striking beginning tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. one big challenge remains concerns over current staffing levels. signs say, put patients first and tell a big part of the workers story. >> we are begging for resources to do our job. we want them to address the short staffing crisis that we have in hand. >> joshua barber is an operating room surgical technician at kaiser walnut creek. he's one of the tens of thousands of kaiser employees on strike across the country. we put patient first, put patient first. one of their main issues, staffing employees claim kaiser hospitals are understaffed, while still making profits. >> the less people you have doing the same job, you're making more money, you're still charging the same to your patients, but you're not paying the labor to do so, right? so it's hard. we're burning out. we're quitting. kaiser permanente declined to be interviewed, but in a statement to abc7 news.

>> it says both sides are still at the bargaining table and have reached agreement on several proposals, including wage increases. belinda hunter, who's on the employee bargaining team, says key issues remain. >> we are distressing the point of safety, patient care, a patient crisis that we're in now because of short staffing and we're asking that they fix that and they fix it immediately. >> all these strikes that we are seeing around the country have one common ailment, covid 19, and especially for health care workers. they have been hit hard . >> misra says the strike sends a strong message and as at kaiser could respond by considering various staffing options or what arrangements they have to, you know, have the current employees have some slack so they could use floaters, they could cross train employees say if demands aren't met, they're ready to strike longer. >> we have a promise to hire about 10,000 people, and that

clark county officials now confirm 12 people were left there without warning or resources. abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes has more on what we know and the support being offered. >> it all happened saturday around 8:00 at night.

>> 12 people, some from venezuela and others from ecuador, dropped off near this san jose church. officials with santa clara county said they were given no resources or direction. >> it was late at night that they arrived. they were looking around for where they might go or what what their next steps might be. and they ended up at the washington youth center from there, they were connected with community groups who serve immigrants. >> andrea martinez manages the county's office of immigrant relations. she says few details are known about who sent the migrants to san jose. >> from our understanding, with our the reports from our partners on the ground who are directly supporting the migrants who have arrived, migrants were previously detained in el paso, texas, and were put on a bus with a choice of colorado or california. >> this woman who did not want to be identified, spoke with our partners at univision. she says she her husband and three daughters were on that bus en otras personas de migration a unos hotels. she says after getting to el paso, they were

placed in hotels and eventually put on that bus by people she said were from immigration. right now, the county and community groups have come together to give the people food. case managers and places to stay. >> they have been through a lot in this journey from even starting before they they got on the bus. and so i think there they're processing what they have been through. it's a traumatic experience. >> the county says it's working with partners to determine who sent the 12 migrants to san jose, texas governor greg abbott's office told abc seven that they are still only bussing to d.c, new york city, chicago, denver and la. right now, santa clara county says they don't know if more busses could be on the way, but have had a plan in place for this type of scenario for some time. one, they'll continue to implement as needed. >> we are prepared for an arrival of migrants to our community, given what we're seeing in other large cities and counties across the country in san jose, zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> coming up, the self-described gangster accused of being the

has been delayed. duane davis made his first court appearance in connection with the case today, but did not enter a plea. he asked the judge for a postponement while he retains a lawyer. authorities believe davis orchestrated the plan to shoot tupac and gave the murder weapon to his nephew to pull the trigger. >> any case that's 27 years old, sometimes presents some challenges. but we feel very confident that the criminal justice system will work in this case. >> now, davis has admitted publicly that he was in the car with his nephew when tupac was killed in a drive by shooting near the las vegas strip in 1996. he is expected back in court later this month in the east bay oakland police are investigating the vandalism of a local lgbtq bar in what appears

to be a possible hate crime. >> the port bar, a popular lgbtq nightspot near downtown oakland, was damaged by rocks thrown through the exterior windows sometime after midnight last night. the bar owner says nothing from the business was stolen, leading him to believe the vandalism was a hate crime. clearly when i opened the door after the smashed windows, the alarm started going off, which means that they didn't even try to enter the premises. >> so it is very much targeted. but i have not seen this in oakland, but i have heard of, you know, lgbtq people being targeted across the bay area. >> the owner adds the bar will remain open for business for the time being. police say this is an ongoing investor allegation. >> all right. we want to turn now to our weather, because i thought it was summer again. no, it feels like summer. >> warm, but nice, which is great for fleet week activities. meteorologists andy patel is here. sandhya. >> yeah, it's definitely feeling like summer out there. and dan and anna. it's going to continue . so for fleet week festivities

really looking good. let me show you some live pictures from our tower cameras. no matter what direction you look, we are seeing wall to wall sunshine. no fog to speak of right now. high pressure in charge of our weather. and with this ridge of high pressure, we are experiencing offshore winds. those downsloping winds, as you will see in the hills atlas peak 13, knoxville 14, not strong, but just enough to bring that warmth down from the hills towards the coast and the valleys. so look at these temperatures up 18 degrees in san francisco, 11 degrees warmer in san jose. you're running about nine degrees warmer. oakland up 11 in santa rosa. and as we check out the fleet week forecast for friday, it's going to be fall warmth mid 80s here in the city after morning low temperature in the low 60s fine flying weather for saturday for the air show on sunday there will be some fog and it is going to be much cooler. so just be ready for that. so we look at a view from our sutro tower

camera. just nothing but sunshine right now in downtown, 85 degrees, 81 in oakland and it is currently 90 in san jose and 88 in palo alto from our east bay hills camera, we're looking towards mount diablo and clear skies there. low 90s for everyone from fairfield to santa rosa, 89 in concord, 86 degrees for you in livermore. good weather to be out at the coast, that's for sure. santa cruz camera showing you that sun clear skies, mild to warm overnight. sunny and warm to hot the next two days and heat relief arrives this weekend. in case you don't like this kind of weather. so tonight we have those temperatures in the 70s and 80s at 6:00. by 9 p.m, you're still warm, but at least the numbers are coming down tomorrow morning. starting off in the 50s and 60s. and by the lunch hour, it's already warm across the region, getting hot for parts of the bay area later on in the afternoon in your morning, temperatures, upper 50s to the upper 60s, clear skies expected for the entire region. and tomorrow afternoon, it's going to be a hot one in the south bay 98 in los gatos,

tonight, in new york city, the manhunt at this hour. police say the chilling, unprovoked murder at a bus stop. also tonight, the chaos on the hill. the battle now for speaker of the house. the first candidates coming forward. first tonight, police searching in new york for that suspect wanted for what appears to be a random attack at that bus stop. surveillance showing the victim, a young man, stabbed to death, stabbed in the heart in front of his girlfriend. what the suspected attacker was heard yelling.
