good morning america. you know, world champion leanne wong is here, gold medallist. we have four who hope to become champions. they had the sweeps. exciting start to our october baseball season. cannot wait for that. that's coming up later in the show. we have a lot of news including the latest on the largest health care workers strike in the nation's history. >> but we begin with the chaos on capitol hill. the house of representatives in a state of peril this morning following a historic ouster of speaker kevin mccarthy. everything, including another potential shutdown takes a back seat to a power struggle in the gop that's only beginning. mary bruce is on capitol hill tracking the latest for us. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, robin. well, the house this morning is now at a complete stand still. another potential shutdown on the horizon. but instead of getting to work the halls are empty. the members have gone home, unable to get anything done until the house picks a new speaker. this morning congress is at a stand still and scrambling for a speaker.

>> is there anything you can give folks? >> i'm sorry, i can't at this point. >> reporter: the house out of session until tuesday, even as congress has just over 40 days to reach a deal and prevent a shutdown. military salaries, critical government services and u.s. aid for ukraine all hanging in the balance. >> we need to do this fast because we're wasting time on the floor right now. >> reporter: moderate republicans furious at their far right colleagues for ousting house speaker kevin mccarthy in that historic move. >> the office of speaker of the house of the united states house of representatives is vacant. >> reporter: some now calling for the congressman who led the rebellion, matt gaetz of florida, to be kicked out of the gop conference. >> you've created total chaos. if your objective is to lower spending, securing the border. you just set that back months. total disaster on his part. >> reporter: but the house now paralyzed, unable to do any legislative business until republicans choose a new speaker.

this morning two top republicans are already jockeying for votes. >> are you confident you can lead the republicans? is that even possible? >> we better. >> reporter: jim jordan of ohio founder of far right freedom caucus is a close ally of donald trump. the big question, can he control the chaos in his party? what can you do that mccarthy couldn't? >> i think i can unite the conservative base and the party and conference. that's why i'm running. we'll see over the next week. >> reporter: chief rifle, the number two republican in the house, steve scalise of louisiana. he's a survivor, returning to the hill after being shot and seriously wounded in 2017 at a congressional baseball practice. but now he's battling blood cancer, under going aggressive treatment. do you feel you could do this job? >> i feel great. we have a lot of work to do. stay focused.

>> reporter: both men are skeptical of u.s. aid to ukraine, setting up a fight with the white house. president biden admitting he's worried, even as he tries to stay above the fray. >> what's your advice to the next house speaker? >> that's above my pay grade. >> reporter: it's possible this field could continue to grow. oklahoma republican congressman kevin heard is now ganging support. also considering getting, putting his hat into the ring to run for speaker. republicans are hoping to avoid another embarrassment and get this done quickly. they're eyeing early next week. is getting all of the house republicans on the same page is not going to be easy and many republicans that i have talked with are skeptical they can pull this off quickly. they fear, robin, that this could drag on. >> that is the fear, mary. some are saying they want to change the rules so this can't happen again. >> reporter: yeah, robin.

we're hearing a growing chorus calling to change the rules so a speaker can't be ousted as easily as kevin mccarthy was. mccarthy struck a deal, agreeing to make it so that only one member could force a vote on his removal. now some that i have spoken with up here say they won't support the next speaker until they agree to change these rules so the speaker can't be kicked out so easily, robin. >> all right, mary. thank you very much for your reporting. michael? now to the man hunt for the suspect in the deadly stabbing of a man at a bus stop. police say they have now identified the man who they say stabbed 32-year-old ryan car son in an attack caught on surveillance camera. trevor ault is on the scene. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, michael. this appears to be a random attack. a man stabbed to death in front of his girlfriend. but police sources say they know who the suspect is. this morning an urgent hunt for the suspect who brutally stabbed a brooklyn man to death in what appears to be an unprovoked attack.

>> confirm a stabbing. malcolm x boulevard an lafayette. >> reporter: police are looking is at the surveillance video. it shows 32-year-old ryan carson waiting at a bus stop with his girlfriend after attending a wedding. suspect walks past and carson and his girlfriend then head in the same direction. carson steps in front of his girlfriend and tries deescalating the situation. backing away, he trips over the bus stop bench the suspect then stabbing him multiple times. >> the knife pierces mr. carson's heart, causing his death. as mr. carson lay dying on the sidewalk, the suspect then runs away. >> reporter: soon after a woman believed to be his girlfriend is seen apologizing and yelling for a person named brian who authorities believe is the suspect. police sources say he's an 18-year-old with a summons from 2022 for disorderly conduct. and two months ago his aunt called 911 describing him as emotionally disturbed after he broke his girlfriend's

belongings in an argument. investigators are now searching an area near a school where they believe he works. >> my name is ryan carson and i am a political organizer and policy analyst for brooklyn, new york. >> reporter: ryan carson was a well known activist who worked to reduce overdose deaths. new york city's mayor describes his murder as unthinkable, a vigil this week drawing more than 100 people in his memory. friends describing him as a hero. >> he was an hopbable person, a person who thought a lot about what it means to be a good person in this world. >> reporter: and along with arresting the suspect, police also want to speak with his girlfriend who apologized as ryan carson died. george? >> what a story. okay, trevor. thank you very much. we have the latest now on donald trump. his civil fraud trial resumes in new york this morning but the former president will not be in the courtroom today as new york's attorney general who brought the case went on offense, mocking what she called the trump show.

senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is tracking the case. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: george, good morning. with donald trump now back home in florida, the whole mood has changed. for three days he attacked the case and the woman who brought it. finally, she had enough. this morning new york attorney general leticia james is defending her civil fraud case that could stop former president trump from doing business in the state, saying she will not be bullied after he spent three days calling her corrupt and the trial rigged. >> this case was brought because it's a case where an individual practiced fraud. >> reporter: the judge agreed, already deciding trump is liable for grocery inflating the value of buildings, golf courses in his portfolio so he could get bank loans on better terms. trump's attorneys have appealed. during testimony they tried to is blame accountants for any problems with financial statements but their cross examination became too tedious for the judge who at one point

pounded his fist and shouted, this is ridiculous. trump departed venting his anger. >> our whole system is corrupt. >> reporter: james called the remark offensive and baseless. >> mr. trump is no longer the donald trump show is over. this is nothing more than a political stunt. >> reporter: trump has been aggressively fund-raising off of his courtroom battles and, george, it appears to be working. his campaign said he raised $45 million in the third quarter. that's far more than any of his republican rivals. george? >> so much of it going to his legal fees. okay, aaron, thank you very much. now to president biden's latest move to ease the burden of student loans. the administration announced forgiveness of another $9 billion in debt. and senior white house correspondent selina wang has the details. good morning. >> reporter: president biden is canceling an additional $9 billion in student loans. this is just days after payments started again following that three year pause.

this benefits 125,000 people who qualify under existing programs. this includes public servant workers including teachers, firefighters and people with permanent disability. but this is only incremental progress that fixes holes in the system. it is a far cry from biden's original plan to cancel up to $20,000 for some 43 million americans with student debt. that original plan was struck down by the supreme court and ever since then biden has been trying to show that core group of voters that he is not giving up on his signature campaign promise. hi administration has so far helped more than 3.5 million borrowers. but still a long way to go, with millions of americans who have not felt any relief yet, george. >> clearly the administration announcing new moves on the border? >> reporter: and, george, this is a stark reversal. the biden administration has now approved building a new section of the border wall in southern texas. president biden had previously strongly accused trump for what he said was an ineffective

border wall policy and vowed in 2020 to not build another foot of the wall if he was elected. but his administration is really struggling to deal with that rising number of illegal border crossings which is why they say this move is necessary. but it's already facing push back from democrats and environmental advocates who say this is ineffective and that it will bull doze through endangered habitats, george. >> thank you very much. robin? now to the massive health care workers strike. tens of thousands of workers are walking the picket lines across the country impacting millions of patients. chief national correspondent matt gutman is in california with the latest more for us. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. both sides reporting overnight they are dead locked. now they've been negotiating at a san francisco hotel for days, but that is on pause right now. that means we will see health care workers back out here picketing again today for the second consecutive day. now, the union representing them saying this is the largest health care worker strike in u.s. history. 75,000 workers overnight kaiser saying that it is still

committed to reaching a new agreement with the unions. they also said they reached some tentative agreements on employee pay and they are assuring the public that patient care has not been compromised. they brought in enough temporary workers to fill the gap. the coalition of unions are saying they are still waiting on a meaningful response from kaiser on staffing levels and employee pay that would reflect the rising cost of living. now, they plan this to be a three day strike today. the second day. they're warning that if progress isn't made, they will come back, quote, longer and stronger for another strike in november. michael? >> definitely affecting a lot of patients, matt. thank you very much. new allegations about the suspect the the abduction of 9-year-old charlotte sena whof rescued in update new york. stephanie ramos has been closely following the story. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: michael, good morning. the kidnapping suspect craig ross jr. is being held at this

jail as one family details to us a suspicious encounter they had with him. this morning as the investigation intensifies into the kidnapping of 9-year-old charlotte sena, troubling new accusations about the man now charged with her abduction. >> i see my grandson and -- >> there was a man standing with his back behind him. >> with his back to me right over him. >> reporter: carol brown lives down the street from alleged kidnapper craig ross jr. and tells us he had a suspicious encounter with her 9-year-old grandson this summer. >> he said, hey, i was just asking him if he could come help me. i got a weed whacker. >> reporter: brown says when she offered to get her husband to help, ross took off. she didn't know who he was until this week when officers who were interviewing neighbors arrived at her house and heard about her grandson. they showed her pictures of suspects and she said she recognized ross immediately.

>> i literally almost got sick to my stomach, fell off my chair almost. >> reporter: charlotte kidnapped at moreau lake park found in ross' camper on his mother's property monday. police are still investigating but have not found a connection between ross or the little girl who is now home with her family. robin? >> thank you, stephanie. we know you've been on this case from the very beginning. appreciate it. now to the golden girls of u.s. gymnastics, the team winning its seventh consecutive world championship with simone biles adding to her historic collection of medals. come on, lara. this is incredible. >> robin, we are witnessing a truly historic run of dominance. no gymnastics team, men or women, has ever won so many world championships in a row, thanks in great part to simone biles, cementing her legacy as the greatest of all times. team usa flipping into first place.

the women's national gymnastics team, led by biles winning their seventh consecutive world championship title. the 26-year-old super star sealing the deal with this floor routine in the final rotation, earning the highest score of the day. and cementing team usa victory by more than two points over brazil. now with 33 combined medals, biles adding to her goat status as the most decorated female gymnast in history. though they ultimately came out on top, the road to gold wasn't easy for the american women who had an early scare when jocelyn robertson injured her ankle during warm-ups, forcing her out of the competition. luckily, it was 20-year-old leanne wong to the rescue, stepping up at just a moment's notice to compete in roberson's place on floor and vault.

lindsay shiver is due in court this morning for the first time since she was released on bail. eva pilgrim is here with that for us. good morning, eva. >> reporter: good morning, robin. lindsay shiver has been unable to leave the island, required to check in with police three times a week as she waits for her case to play out in court. this morning the next step as she prepares to go to trial. this morning lindsay shiver, the georgia woman accused of plotting to kill her estranged husband in the bahamas due in court for the first time since she was released on $100,000 bail. shiver now charged with conspireing to kill former college football player robert shiver with the help of her boyfriend and an alleged hit man. according to a police report, investigators say lindsey admitted to sending messages and photos saying kill him. the shivers in the midst of a contention divorce. police called multiple times leading up to her arrest. this body cam video from april

is 30th, weeks after her husband filed for divorce, showing an is incident at her in laws. lindsay claiming her husband was blocking her from seeing her three boys. her mother-in-law calling 911 saying she was harassing them. >> they were saying that you are following them, obviously, and that you got a gun. >> we're all like, you've got to get help. >> reporter: then in july, days before she was arrested, the couple seen arguing at their home. >> we have filed for divorce. >> okay. >> we are living in the same house. hell on earth, as you can imagine. he became super aggressive. that's when i called immediately because he's been physical before and i'm just not -- >> okay. >> not doing that. >> reporter: lindsay calling police. the fight about an upcoming trip to the bahamas. according to the divorce filing,

robert accusing his wife of having an affair. lindsay countering with is accusations of domestic violence. >> she's entitled to a jury trial. what is interesting about conspiracy cases in the bahama is, unlike the united states, it does not require a unanimous verdict. >> reporter: and we should know more about the details of this case soon. the evidence against lindsay shiver and her other co-defendants is expected to be laid out in court in a week. george? >> thank you very much. we have new details on the you tube parenting influencers and life coach arrested for child abuse. they were known for their tough love approach. this morning new accusations hildebrandt's relatives. juju chang has the exclusive. >> reporter: good morning. their arrests were shocking to millions of ruby franke fans, but there had been growing concerns about the mom influencer and her partner. you are about to meet one woman who said jodi abused her years ago an nobody listened, until now.

she was the wildly popular mom influencer known for her tough love style of parenting. >> i'm not even going to let you eat breakfast until you get your chores done. >> reporter: but this morning ruby franke, the mom of six, behind bars, along with her business partner, licensed therapist jodi hildebrandt. >> those angry about principals, come. we'd love to have you. >> reporter: both face six felony counts of child abuse after franke's 12-year-old son is escaped from hildebrand's home last august to a nearby neighbor who called police. >> he's emaciated. he's got tape around his legs. he's hungry and he's thirsty. >> reporter: while the arrest sent shock waves, some who new hildebrandt say they were not at all surprised. >> we knew jodi did this. we knew 14, 15 years ago she had already done this, to me. people saw. people witnessed and did nothing. >> reporter: just because you reframe it as tough love or tough parenting, that's not love. that's abuse.

>> reporter: hildebrandt's niece jessi who uses they/them pronouns, sitting down for an exclusive after suffering what they call brutal abuse at the hands of their aunt jodi. >> she'd lock me in this room and she made me sleep outside in the snow. she duct taped me. i wasn't allowed to speak to anyone. >> reporter: jessi is not the only one who points the blame squarely on hildebrandt. >> i understand why people are focusing on ruby. they're ruby's children. all of these theories and modalities and these parenting ideas, that all comes from jodi. >> reporter: it's a sentiment shared by franke's estranged husband kevin. >> kevin feels like jodi manipulated the entire family, children included. >> reporter: what would you say to jodi if she were sitting across from you right now? >> you did not win. and you do not own my life.

>> pretty impressive. is it's history making. when you say goal medal, i saw your smile got a lot bigger. le you should be very proud of yourself, which i know you are. you stepped up for team usa. you had to sub in for your teammate jocelyn, who got injured during warm-ups. so when did you find out you were competing in two additional events and what went through your mind when you found out? >> the day was full of so many emotions. i don't think i have ever felt that many emotions in one competition. from feeling sad, stressed, disappointed, excited, happy and proud. but i found out i was going to be doing two additional e srepts events after jocelyn had an uncharacteristic vault landing. so she landed short on her vault. she kind of stood there. so we weren't sure if it was a short landing. and she'd be okay. but i had to switch my line set and do two additional routines for team sauce.

>> mentally you had to prepare differently? you had to change your mind set? >> yeah. because i was just getting ready to cheer on my teammates because they just had 1:30 to warm up their vault. when she landed, my teammates were like, take off your clothes. i had to get up, get ready and warm up my vaults to get ready is to compete. >> i can only imagine. almost like you didn't have enough time to worry about the stress. you just had to do it. you crushed it. >> yeah. >> this victory also makes simone biles the most decorated female gymnast in history. is what does it mean to have her back? >> she is an incredible athlete. i can't believe she won her first world all around here in belgium ten years ago. so i was just so happy to see her do so well on that competition floor an win another gold medal for team usa. incredible difficulty on all the events and the way she handles the pressure is so incredible. >> you're balancing elite gymnastics.

is you are also a premed student. you're competing for the university of florida as well. how are you balancing it all? >> i mean, it's definitely a lot to balance between school, college gymnastics, world gymnastics, competing for team usa and keeping up with my studies. i'm just taking it day by day. just learning how to balance it all especially since i'm taking in person classes right now. my professors have been very helpful with me and my schedule, and they have even sent me some good luck videos and e-mails and messages. >> i mentioned all the stuff is you're doing, but if school and competition aren't enough to keep you busy, you also run your own business out of your dorm room. tell us about that. >> yeah. school and gymnastics are definitely the priorities but after that i love to manage my business and website. i call it the leanne wong boutique. it started in december of 2021
