someone so rarefied died, so dedicated, and with a sparkling diamond like presence served our country so well for so many wonderful years. >> diane, we know you did your best, but for america. may you rest in peace. >> world leaders, dignitaries, family and friends gathering in san francisco today to say farewell to the late senator dianne feinstein in the city that she loved. we heard stories of her illustrious career from the bay area all the way to the nation's capital and this afternoon, we look back on her legacy and also look ahead to how she will be remembered in this final tribute. good afternoon and thanks for joining us. i'm larry beil. >> and i'm christine xie. we'll have complete team coverage of dianne feinstein's farewell in just a moment. but first, a heat advisory is in effect for parts of the bay area. >> our abc7 news weather team says this will be the hottest day of the year so far for some cities. let's get right to abc7

news meteorologist andy patel. yeah and larry and kristin, no one's escaping this heat. >> take a look at those temperatures as everyone's in the 80s and the 90s right now. it is currently 96 in fairfield, 91 degrees in half moon bay, 90 in the city, 94 in santa rosa and san jose. we do have that heat advisory that's in effect until 11 p.m. tomorrow. if you're particularly sensitive to heat these above average temperatures can cause you to get sick. so there is a moderate to high risk of heat illnesses as the san francisco area, the bay shoreline, also santa cruz mountains, santa clara valley, included in that heat advisory as we go hour by hour this evening at 5 p.m, still hanging on to that warm to hot weather as we head towards 7 p.m. temperatures slowly coming down. and then tomorrow morning, we'll get some relief. obviously the temperatures will rise again. and by tomorrow afternoon, we're talking about another warm to hot day. i'll let you know exactly where those numbers will end up and when you'll get a break from the hot weather

, courage and collaboration in 1500 invited guests, including 30 members of congress, attended the private service outside san francisco city hall, where feinstein began her political career. >> as the program interrupted several times with flyovers by the blue angels practicing for fleet week. ironic ali, an event founded by feinstein. >> thank you, mayor feinstein, for bringing the blue angels to san francisco. in 1981. in an audio message, president joe biden praising feinstein's longtime career, she turned passion into purpose to lead the fight to ban assault weapons, to protect our civil liberties, to strengthen our national security , safeguard our environment and so much more. >> dianne, when the women of america have come a long way, our country has come a long way . >> and you helped move the ball forward and our nation salutes you. dianne new york senator

feinstein's wish that any staffer over the past 30 plus years who had worked for her have a place at her memorial today. and if they wanted to come and as a result, there was an entire section of former employees of dianne feinstein. there was a lot of people there. so not a bad tribute to a former boss, right? yeah. touching cornell, thank you. >> now, the last speaker of today's memorial was dianne feinstein's granddaughter, eileen mariano. >> yeah, she reflected on some of the life lessons and advice she got from her grandma. she taught me lessons that i will carry with me forever, work. >> work to your long suit. she would say, do something that you can do for your entire life, something that energized you, something that inspires you, and something that makes the world a better place for the people who live in it. boy did my grandmother do that. earn your spurs, she said. you have to

work hard, put in the hours and work your way up. >> a great message. a big crowd turned out to honor senator feinstein today and what was initially supposed to be a public memorial. that service in front of city hall became a private one because of security concerns. yeah, we chatted with some people who attended the service and those disappointed to miss a monumental tribute for the political trailblazer for abc7 news reporter suzannephan joins us live now from there with more. >> suzanne. >> kristin larry, so many people came out today, some with invitations, some without. everybody wanted to be here in person to celebrate the life and legacy of senator dianne feinstein. they say this was a day they simply did not want to miss. governor gavin newsom and his wife among the many people who turned out to san francisco city hall today to remember senator dianne feinstein here in san francisco. so the city that launched her career as a political leader, senator feinstein was honored and celebrated and noah griffin was

senator feinstein is second administrative aide back in 1974. he says he learned a hard lesson. thanks to feinstein. >> my wife said to diana, i said, i understand you helped my husband grow up. yes, i did. and he certainly needed it. >> griffin attended today's memorial service. >> a nice remembrance, a celebration of life. i'm sad that these things couldn't have been said for dianne while she was still living. she needed her flowers. then she was a martyr to the cause. a martyr to duty, a martyr to the democratic party. >> oakland mayor shengtao was one of the many local leaders who turned out. >> we're held up on the shoulders of senator feinstein. you know, as a young politician and myself as a young woman, you know, it is through the leadership of senator feinstein that we are able to be here today. >> san francisco da brooke jenkins says she also was inspired by senator feinstein's legacy. >> i took away that we women have to lead. we have to be at the table. we have to continue to fight hard and difficult

fights. >> longtime san francisco community leader florence fang wanted to thank the senator for showing compassion and friendship. when fang's late husband passed away. >> but is she come to me? she says. florence, who said, a strong woman, don't cry. i lend you my strong shoulder. >> congressman john garamendi says he has so much to remember about senator feinstein. >> about 40 years of memories with this woman and our family. >> so a lot, a lot to there were so many people who had hoped to attend the senator's service, but were unable to not knowing, had been changed to an invitation only event due to security concerns. >> i think it's disappointing because there are a lot of people in san francisco who are so proud of her and proud that she's from this area. >> i heard that she's one of the best politicians that's come out of california. so we'd love to be able to celebrate her, but i understand the security concern . >> and back here live, we saw so many leaders today, senator barbara boxer, former governor jerry brown, countless community leaders. everyone said it was an

tharea of almaden boulevard and tropicana way. a suspect was taken into custody just ho after the incident. abc7 news reporter zach fuentes was at the scene and has been tracking the updates. >> it happened just before eight thursday morning. union city police say they were called to this mobile home park for a report of a person stabbed once officers got there they found three victims with injuries. one was pronounced dead at the scene. the other two taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. neighbors say the community for people 55 years and up is typically quiet. >> i live here for eight years. i feel it's very peaceful. it's very good community. >> but many who live here started their day stunned to find this police scene steps away from their homes. >> i was actually shocked that i saw it on the news this morning and i thought, wait a minute, i probably live. so i went to walk over there and it was all cordoned off already.

>> the scene was focused around the park's clubhouse sky. seven shots showed a black car with its door open, a bicycle in the road and a union city transit bus. though police haven't said yet how they're all involved in the investigation. this woman says she normally walks her dogs in the area. police were investigating but for some reason ignored her daily routine. >> it was just intuition, like, yeah, someone told me like, don't go. so i didn't go. and then when i finally came out to walk my dogs, everything was like pandemonium. >> when alerts first went out thursday morning about the stabbing, union city police said that the suspect was outstanding, but later in the morning, mountain view police confirmed that they were helping union city police search for that suspect who they said was armed and dangerous just before 1230. mountain view pd said that the suspect was in custody. union city police later confirming that it was a 21 year old man from mountain view. we're still waiting to find out the motive of the stabbing and details leading up to it. union city police will be holding a press conference at five this evening to provide more information. we'll be sure to bring you the latest on air and.

zach fuentes, abc7 news. >> developing news right now on day two of the largest health care strike in us history. 75,000 kaiser employees are on the picket line. abc7 news reporter angela hassan has been following the story. he joins us live from walnut creek with the latest on sir. >> and kristen, we're learning that the white house and governor's office are both now getting involved, trying to bring this strike to an end. kaiser maintains that progress is being made, but if you talk to the employees out here on the picket line, they say they want more transparent tsay at the bargaining table. california assemblyman timothy greyson joined the picket line as kaiser employees took to the streets of walnut creek. >> this has been going on for a very long time. i sent a letter in asking, requesting kaiser to negotiate in good faith to hear the voices of their workers. >> day two of this planned three day strike comes as negotiations

failed earlier this week. priscilla offermann is part of the employee bargaining team. >> we've been bargaining since april. okay when we decided to give our ten day strike notice, that's when bargaining actually started happening. so you can't cram in an actual full bargaining session in ten days. >> kaiser permanente declined to be interviewed, but in an email to abc7 news, kaiser claims that tentative agreements have been reached on wages and benefits and that it met the union's demand to hire 10,000 employees. but employees refute those claims because they keep throwing out these numbers that they apparently they've already reached the 10,000 new employees. >> who are these employees? because when you walk into those facilities you are not seeing new faces at all. >> the union says kaiser's offer to raise the minimum wage to $23 an hour falls short of the $25 an hour. they want. what do we want? >> sick days. when do we want it ? now. >> also on the picket line were city council members from nearby cities of concord and san ramon. if they feel that they are short

staffed, they're not able to treat their patients in a timely manner and get the turnaround that they need. >> they're understaffed. >> if they're not willing to talk and be transparent about our situation, then what does that tell you about the company that we're working for? >> the union and those who backed them are also demanding more transparency around kaiser's financial statements. >> part of it is being honest and forthright, and that's to be determined by what they provide in documentation. >> now we did get a new email from kaiser, about 45 minutes ago. in it, it says, out of respect for the bargaining process, it's not going to discuss any details at this time. it did say that they are going to meet with coalition leaders and try and set the next bargaining session. union leaders tell me if no agreement is reached by friday, they will likely consider a longer two week strike. reporting live on san hasan, abc seven news. >> slosser thank you. another labor situation now. 900 san francisco public school workers may go on strike. the union that represents paraeducators food

service workers and custodians has authorized a strike if they cannot reach a deal with san francisco unified. they want the district to keep up with what the city pays for similar jobs, which they say is up to 25% higher. the district says it's committed to negotiating in good faith. a date for a possible strike has not yet been set. contra tsay is once again brewing after san francisco's portola music festival. >> the city of alameda is asking for the festival to be discontinued or moved to another venue because of another year of noise complaints. the event at pier 80 received the same complaints last year. deep bass music from the event reverberated across the bay. event organizers assured residents they made changes to address those issues ahead of this year's festival. all but alameda residents say this year's event was still too loud. speaking of loud, if you're in san francisco, maybe anywhere around the bay, you could hear the blue angels zooming through the skies as they get ready for

their big shows this weekend. and you can see them well because clear out there. let's check in with sandhya patel. yeah. >> and larry and kristen, we have no fog to speak of, no clouds to speak of. and that's why they have great visibility. let's take a look at the forecast out for the air show the next three days. we're basically looking at a warm fall day tomorrow, 88 degrees fine. flying weather on saturday, although temperatures will start to come down on sunday. there will be some fog around and it will be noticeably cooler, certainly not cooler today. take a look at this live picture from our exploratorium camera. plenty of sun out there and it's in the low 90s from san francisco to mountain view to palo alto, half moon bay. i mean, get that downsloping wind and you're heating up 89 degrees right now in oakland from our east bay hills camera. we're looking out towards mount diablo and just blue skies out there. 95 in santa rosa in the low 90s for napa, concord and livermore. 96 degrees in fairfield. high pressure in command of our weather and we are seeing the

downsloping winds today. the offshore flow which is classic for september, october for this is when we get summer here in san francisco and along the coast. as you know from our mt. tam cam. just a beautiful view right now. warm to hot weather again tomorrow. possibility of a few records. we are looking at fog returning and relief arriving this upcoming weekend. so if you're looking for relief at 5:00, you're not going to find a whole lot other than the coast temps hours will still be well above average for this time of year as we head into 7 p.m. 60s to 80 as numbers start to drop tomorrow morning, you'll see 50s and 60s. and as we head into the early afternoon, temperatures will already pop up into the 80s and the 90s so quick warm up again. temperatures first thing in the morning with clear skies. it's going to be really mild. upper 50s to the mid 60s for most of you tomorrow afternoon, you're looking at another hot one in the south bay, 99 in gilroy, 95 in santa clara, 96, san jose on the peninsula, 91 degrees in san mateo, 87.5. moon bay. it's

going to be warm even at the beaches. 88 degrees in san francisco. in the north bay. you're looking at temperatures that will range from the 70s around places like bodega bay to the 90s around santa rosa, san rafael, 94 degrees along with vallejo in the east bay, 90 degrees in oakland, 89. in berkeley, 94 for you in castro valley. i know this is tough for some people who don't have air conditioning here in the bay area. so if you're waiting for that relief, it will come this weekend and tomorrow afternoon inland areas will be summer like 97 in concord, 98 degrees in fairfield, 96 in pleasanton. here's a look at your accuweather seven day forecast heating up again tomorrow so temperatures will moderate on saturday. you'll notice at first at the coast and at the bay and then by sunday everybody drops off. look at the numbers, just dramatic dropping, especially in our inland and bayside communities on monday. and we'll even bring in a chance of rain with some breezy conditions for both monday and tuesday before those temperatures come back up

set of three. governor newsom made it official yesterday signing a bill into law that increases the amount of sick days employees receive and the number they can bank. up until now, employees could roll over as many as six days under the new rules, employees can hang on to as many as ten sick days. the new rules kick in on january first. expect those tesla super charging station to become a bit more crowded today. hyundai and kia announced that they're adopting north american charging standard ports for their electric vehicles in the us and canada. the change means drivers of those vehicles will gain access to thousands of tesla superchargers across the two countries and mexico. tesla has more direct current fast charging plugs in the us than any other network, and the chargers are located in prime locations along major freeways.

bay with the warriors securing the first wnba expansion franchise since 2008. the new team will debut in the 2025 season. they'll play all of their home games at chase center while practice at the warriors oakland facility. now, this

season, the wnba has soared. they've delivered record ratings and attendance. former warriors president rick welts, if you recall, he helped create the wnba says this is the perfect time to expand to the bay area across women's sports, soccer and basketball in particular. >> this is a moment and i and i think everything that came before provides a foundation for us to be able to kind of continue the success that we're seeing right now. but that's our challenge. we can't lose this momentum again, and we have it right now. >> and i'm telling you right now, we will win a wnba championship in the first five years of this franchise. >> i have no reason to doubt them. and thank goodness for, you know, joe's big audacious promises because one thing you have to say about the promises he's made, he's actually kept them. not everything is under your control when you try to deliver a promise like that. but i do. i do think, you know, what i would say about joe, those of us who worked for him forever, you would not use the word patient with joe very

is launching an initiative called the rainbow flag donation program. >> the association says the idea is to give flags flown in the castro to organizations that uphold and embrace its principles of equality, diversity and inclusivity. the first donation is going to the national stonewall museum in fort lauderdale, florida, and it's being made in tribute to the late dianne feinstein. >> several community groups in oakland are urging the city to use a state loan program to install more license plate reading cameras. and they sent a letter to the city's privacy advisory commission saying the funds would help fight an increase in thefts and other crimes throughout oakland. back in july, the police department revealed the license plate readers already installed have not been used since february, and that's because mostly due to that ransomware attack that the city experienced, mayor shengtao announced in august that oakland would receive a $1.2 million loan from the state, which could fund automated license plate readers along freeways, as well

as some city streets. the national park service has cleaned up what was left of a massive illegal marijuana grow in marin county. the final phase of that project wrapped up today. park rangers say the cultivation site was first discovered back in march near laguna trail at point reyes national seashore. the cleanup began in may, and since then, more than a half ton of trash, debris, chemicals and old equipment has been removed from the area. >> well, what used to be just flu season has now become tripledemic season. that's led to a recommendation for santa clara county residents. >> everyone, six months and older needs at least two shots this season. one updated flu shot and one updated covid booster per county health officials are recommending additional vaccination protection against the flu, covid and rsv for the first time. >> there's protection against rsv for infants and pregnant people. santa clara county has launched a new dashboard to help citizens track the viruses. you

new york city is considering the expansion of a pilot program where cameras paired with a sound meter are used to detect excessive noise like illegally modified cars and motorcycles. then logs the offender's license plate. according to the guardian, some yet to be named places in california are also considering adding the technology. what are the considerations? yay or nay? what say you? who wants to start big brother? >> watching and listening? i don't know. i wonder about the enforcement of something like this. and it sounds like a lot of it would be automated. so then you're going to have people protesting. no, it wasn't my car that made the noise or whatever the case may be. i'm not sure that this is something that we need at the top of our list of priorities. yeah i agree with that. >> i mean, is that really, you know, the biggest thing to invest your money in noise? i mean, it is annoying,

distracting that cars are too loud or the music's turned up or whatever it is. yeah, it's not great for neighbors, but is this what, you know, money should be going towards? i don't know. >> yeah. and then there's some, you know, socioeconomic or equity concerns because lower cost cars or older cars, if you will, are more likely to be louder than your certainly brand new electric tesla. so you know is it punishing people who are more socioeconomically challenged already a little bit more? that's one concern. and then i wonder if it extends beyond cars, because you guys, that's about the level decibel of like protests. so how would it eventually curb protests to which or is that the ultimate goal? >> we'll see how it plays out. walmart no longer requiring college degrees from anybody interested in hundreds of corporate roles. the company is eliminating what it calls unnecessary barriers that prevent career advancement. job applicants will start seeing updated descriptions in the job apps next year. walmart said it will waive the need for a university degree if candidates can show they've gained the

famous blue angels took to the skies to rehearse for their annual air show this weekend. >> and one of the pilots grew up in san francisco. so getting ready to fly over his hometown. how cool is that? >> that is so cool. abc seven news reporter luis pena spoke to him and another member of the fleet ahead of the shows as we used to seeing them in the air. >> but now get ready to meet two of the seven blue angel pilots behind the show. one of them has been looking forward to this specific weekend. >> this is the show i have circled on my calendar for every single year for lieutenant commander scott goossens, san francisco is home. >> he grew up here. >> a pinch yourself moment getting up in the jet, flying over the bay, seeing the golden gate bridge, seeing my house, high school, all that was just an incredible, incredible opportunity and one it felt like a dream, you know, a dream come true. if you will. >> blue angel pilots serve a two year term. this is lieutenant commander goosen's, second and last year as a blue angel, a dream that started back when he was just a kid in san francisco.
