11 million the next year when travel reopened. there was a huge rush to get a passport. the state department is always busy issuing passports, but now it is busier than ever before. >> we had the most passports issued this last fiscal year that we've ever seen in our history. 24 million passport books and cards were issued this last fiscal year. and a lot of it really did have to do with demand. a lot more people were applying for their passports this year and traveling. >> that caused the system to bog down. i heard from a record number of travelers over the past couple of years needing help. travelers like the east bay's david yandell. he and his wife each paid an extra $60 for expedited service. >> we didn't want to miss this occasion. it was very important to us and to our family, and it worked fine for rosie. but it didn't work at all for me. >> now, the state department is getting on top of the workload and getting a passport is happening much more quickly. >> as of october 2nd, we were
6:43 pm
able to reduce our passport processing times by two weeks. so now for routine service, you could expect it to take 8 to 11 weeks. and for expedited service, you could expect that to take 5 to 7 weeks. so that is time enough for many to get a passport in time for holiday travel. >> if they get moving. and by january, processing times should be at pre-pandemic levels. >> by the end of the year, we can get back to times like we had in 2019, which was 6 to 8 weeks for routine and 2 to 3 weeks for expedited service. >> now, if your application gets stuck in limbo or it just seems that way, you can go to the state department's online passport tracker and look up the status. now i've posted all the information you need. it's on our website at abc7 news.com. hopefully these problems will be totally gone. >> that's so stressful for so many people are trying to leaving the country and you don't have your passport. yeah. thanks, michael. sure. all right.

is a place where you can cool off. look at santa cruz. it's a nice tonight as the waves are crashing. maybe take a dip in the water or air quality. good to moderate the next three days. so it's still safe to be outside as we check out live doppler seven, no fog in sight and we're not expecting it tomorrow afternoon will be another warm to hot day with upper 80s to upper 90s. well above average for your friday, but much cooler weather is coming your way. the second half of your weekend going into monday when we have an opportunity for seeing some showers and it may linger into early tuesday, but certainly welcome around this time of year when we're typically talking about fire danger and heat and we're talking about heat again on the accuweather seven day forecast for tomorrow, 80 and 90s, those temperatures will back off on saturday. you'll feel it most around the bay and coast and then everyone cools off on sunday. that cooling continues monday with breezy, possibly wet weather coming our way. but certainly 70s will be welcome for our warmest spots. and dan, boy, that's a big drop

off, big drop off. >> thanks, andy. >> all right. well, this is also hot. women's professional basketball's coming to the bay area, the wnba announced a new team will be playing at chase center starting in 2025. abc's seven news reporter ryan curry shows you how the warriors are making this happen. >> i'd like to present you with an official wnba basketball and make an official welcome to the wnba. >> the courts at chase center will soon host two teams the warriors and a yet to be named wnba team. >> we're getting a team in the bay area and we're for me personally, this is a very, very exciting moment to fulfill a dream that i've always had for women's basketball warriors. >> owners joe lacob and peter guber joined mayor london breed and league commissioner cathy engelbert to announce a new 13th team will play in san francisco . this new team will be the first expansion franchise since 2008. >> this is just one step further to making sure that the public understands and realizes the value of what san francisco does
6:49 pm
in terms of being this place that is not only an amazing, beautiful city, but also a beacon of hope. >> the wnba is coming off its most popular season yet in terms of game attendance and people watching on tv. the league says games on abc averaged over 600,000 each game. a league record commissioner engelbert says it was time to expand the league and san francisco was the best place for a new team. the bay area is firmly aligned with our already strong fan base of diverse and engaged basketball fans. >> this is a hub for women's sports, with six division one women's basketball teams in the bay area warriors ownership does not just want to add a wnba team here at chase center. >> they want them to match the energy of the men's team by having them compete for a title right away. >> first press conference for the warriors. we will win a championship in the first five years. and i'm telling you right now, we will win a wnba championship in the first five years of this franchise. >> the new team will use the warriors oakland facilities to practice. but will play their

games in san francisco. warriors owners say, as they decide on a name, it will be something that reflects the culture of the bay area. we're going to try to come up with something that makes sense and hopefully it'll be a good name and reflect what we have going on here in san francisco and in the whole bay area and women's sports in san francisco. ryan curry, abc7 news. >> it's really a great step. it's exciting to see. >> yeah, it's fun. >> you have a name that's actually thinking about that. >> i don't have great ones but i'm going to come up with. >> so we were doing some research upstairs and it turns out there was a women's professional team in the bay area in the 1970s. really? yeah. and they were the pioneers. i like that. do you like that gold ? >> yeah. yeah. >> golden california's sure. why not? so we'll see. i don't know. that's a good one. you guys know what month it is, right? october >> yeah. >> no, no, of course not. >> it's rock tober. bravo, october. yeah, yeah. real women . >> brock purdy. can he continue his brilliant play against dallas? and where is george

don't mind me. i'm just the flu. i'm quite harmless, really. and when people ask, “but aren't you linked to dangerous flu complications, like pneumonia, heart attack, and hospitalizations?” i just say, “but, i'm just the flu.” it's him! who? i'm just the flu! fight the flu with sanofi flu vaccines, which help prevent flu in older adults.
6:53 pm
they've even been shown to provide better protection from flu-related complications compared to standard dose flu shots. don't get fluzone high-dose quadrivalent if you've had a severe allergic reaction to its components, including egg products, or after previous dose of flu vaccine. don't get flublok quadrivalent if you've had a severe allergic reaction to its components. tell your healthcare professional if you've had severe muscle weakness after a flu shot. people with weakened immune systems may have a lower vaccine response. this flu season, you do have a choice. choose the protection of a sanofi flu vaccine. ask your pharmacist or doctor which sanofi flu vaccine is right for you. going back to the catch in 1982. so there's always extra juice when they meet each other and they meet again sunday night at levi's stadium. the niners, one of only two remaining unbeaten teams in the league at four and zero. dallas comes in at three and 140 niners are averaging

more than 31 points per game. that's going to be tough to reach or it might be against the dallas d. that's allowed only 41 points total all all season. this game could be a great opportunity for tight end george kittle to bust loose. he had only one catch last week. he has yet to score a touchdown this season. brock purdy almost has too many weapons. so spreading the ball around is kind of a challenge. >> there's no ego, man. we want to win. we want to do whatever it takes. and you know, everyone has their big games, you know, it's just sort of how the play calls go and things like that. but i mean, if it were up to me, obviously i'd love to have all my guys, including george, go for 150 every game and four touchdowns, one play is called for me to execute. >> it's the fourth down play and they call my number. i might as well execute it. excuse my language. i'm just going to continue to whatever they ask of me, i'm going to do it. they want to throw me the ball. 15 times. i'll catch the ball 15 times, throw it to me once. it is what it is. >> george is ready. well we showed you this a few minutes
