downright hot everywhere today. let's take a look for you at some pictures around the bay area, especially the one on the left. that is santa cruz, where you can see a lot of people enjoying the beach. we have team coverage for you right now beginning with meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya >> yeah. and kristen and larry, as we take a look at those temperatures right now, many areas in the 90s, san francisco , 8781 in half moon bay san jose just hit 95 degrees which ties the old record but the official records won't come down until shortly after 5:00. now the heat advisory that's in the area shaded in orange has been exceeded, ended until 11 p.m. tomorrow because this unseen hot weather is going to stick around for another day. temperatures in the mid 80s to upper 90s tomorrow. so above average and that means moderate to high heat risk will remain with us. you definitely have to take it easy out there as you look at those temperatures at 5 p.m, we still have many 80s and 90s across the board and at 7 p.m. still

hanging on to the warmth from the day coast will continue to cool because the wind has already started switching to onshore. now overnight tonight, we are expecting the temperatures to drop off at least for those who don't have ac, it's nicer to be able to sleep at night and then in the afternoon, those temperatures are soaring again. and i'll be back to let you know exactly where they will end up in just a few minutes larry. >> kristin all right, sandhya, thank you. so friday is a work day, but a lot of people skipped out early today and headed to the coast to beat the heat, especially those who don't have air conditioning. >> right. abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke. people who were out and about today joins us live now in san francisco. tara >> yeah, larry, i think i was one of the lucky ones that got to be out there today. at least that's my opinion. i spoke with tourists and locals alike. and while some are trying to escape this heat, others are embracing it. it's sandcastles and smiles for this mother daughter duo. >> my house feels like a heater at the moment at escaping the

san francisco heat at baker beach. i was lucky enough to recently get a box for just the bedroom, but the rest of the house is really hot, so we all kind of buckle up in the bedroom when it's really that hot shoes off and picnic blankets out as the city faces what's likely to be one of the hottest days of the year. >> we heard it was going to be like 80, 85 degrees today. so we're like, why don't we do a beach day? >> jordan daniels lives in oakland and says it's rare to get a hot beach day like this in san francisco. >> so not typical at all. usually we're in like sweaters have our jackets on. >> i love it being in australian, this is like heaven for me. >> i love living in san francisco, but it's just simply not warm enough. >> and across the golden gate bridge, plenty of tourists still making the trek. >> we walk the golden gate bridge this morning and it was beautiful. it was nice and cool. some rising early to get ahead of the heat. we did. we did get here a little bit early so that we could beat the heat. >> when you were planning this trip, were you expecting this

at the first fleet week air show of the weekend. this afternoon, the blue angels just wrapped up their performance as abc seven news reporter ryan curry joins us live now from the marina green in san francisco, where you had a great view, ryan. yeah kristin, good afternoon. >> the blue angels just moments away flew right by here one last time before they departed for the rest of the day, waiting for their next show tomorrow. but i'll tell you, resilient san franciscans were not going to let the heat stop them. many of them hug the san francisco bay shoreline for a great view of another jaw dropping display by the blue angels. the roaring sound that graces the san francisco sky is back. the blue angels air show highlights fleet week, which residents say is one of san francisco's main events. >> i love jets. i love the military. i, you know, walking around, i thought like, man, if i was younger, i wish i kind of wish i would have joined a branch. >> sunnyvale resident brandon leckie is one of the many

embracing the energy of the armed forces by braving out hot temperatures in san francisco to celebrate an event that began over four decades ago. >> i'm just taking it in. i don't even totally know what to expect because i've never been to an air show like this before. >> it's not just the navy all public service groups showed the public a glimpse of what they do. some showing if they have what it takes to be in the armed forces. children sat inside plane cockpits. others learned life saving measures like cpr and some toward a mobile hospital put up by the marines. >> the fact that that we can come out here and do this and tell our story and just participate in this great event as our sea service is with the coast guard and the navy. it's really special for us. >> fleet week officials are also honoring military members for their work in helping the community. at friday's ceremony. they are acknowledging christopher cox, a navy member who helped somebody who has been a victim of a stabbing earlier in the year in san diego. there was a gentleman that was just bleeding out on the sidewalk. and so i went over to his aid

the front page of abc7 news.com. >> well, it's the last day of a planned three day strike by kaiser employees and it's likely going to end without a settlement. and today we're learning the us labor department is now getting involved to try to help bring an end to what is the largest health care strike in us history. abc7 news reporter answer hassan spoke to the union president today. joining us live now with more answer. >> yeah, larry. >> kaiser says that the next round of negotiations will begin next thursday. the union president says that acting us secretary of labor julie su has been speaking to both sides and may even be part of next week's negotiations. some labor experts, though, say that if the biden administration gets involved, that could be an advantage for kaiser power. we're kind of power and power. >> yes. the president supports the strikers. collective bargaining work. >> the union of health care workers president dave reagan telling striking workers that president biden is backing their

cause. we got to run through the finish line, but we are winning this thing. >> let's keep it up. >> reagan says there have been no negotiations since tuesday. staffing levels remains one of the critical issues. >> the core of everything is we just don't have enough people to do the job. kaiser has refused to give us information that we believe we're entitled to. that's why we think this is what's called an unfair labor practice strike. >> kaiser declined an interview request, saying it won't discuss details out of respect for the bargaining process. one the union says the workload has increased, which impacts patient care. they want 10,000 new employees to be hired. in an email to abc seven news on tuesday, kaiser claims the demand to hire 10,000 employees has been met. >> they say they've filled 10,000 positions. if you're really careful, most of that is people who are doing internal transfers. they've not gotten there. they're parsing words. it's just not true. oh, do we want cuts? >> what do we want out? >> reagan announced on friday to

employees at kaiser walnut creek that acting us secretary of labor julie su is now getting involved. >> i think she's already begun to get involved and is playing a valuable role and i believe she'll be. she's willing to continue to be involved and help us get to an agreement when the government steps in, they're stepping in effectively on the side of the employer. >> professor robert oaks, a union member himself, says the us department of labor's involvement may force kaiser back to the bargaining table. >> but he adds, when the government gets involved, it often forces workers to concede some of their demands. >> my concern here is that if they step in and an and pressure the union not to strike a second time, that they may not achieve their main demand. >> still, reagan is optimistic that the end is in sight. it's not that it's too complicated. >> there's too many points of disagreement. it really is. this needs to be done. let's do the right thing. we think we can

have it done next week. >> reagan says that if next week's negotiations fail, they're preparing for an even longer strike that will begin the first week of november. reporting live on sara hassan, abc seven news. >> answer thank you. contra costa county officials are investigating yet another petroleum coke dust release at the martinez refining company. today's release happened around 1030 in the morning while workers were doing maintenance. health officials deployed a hazmat team but said they didn't find any visible dust in the surrounding communities. the county now plans to post a 72 hour report from the facility on their website later. this is the refineries, fourth petroleum, coke, dust release in just the past year. >> oakland's search for a new police chief. it's gone on for months now, but it's going to take even longer. also the dominican sisters taking us on a tour of their beautiful spiritual retreat center in san rafael and explain why they're putting it up for sale. and later, the robust new jobs report that the president says is a result of biden nomics

who may answer to a higher lling. the dominican sisters of san rafael have made the diicult choice to sell their spiritual retreat center on magnolia avenue, a place of peace and refuge for thousands of people over the years. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard spoke with nuns at the convent about the search for the right buyer. well welcome to our chapel sister margaret diener, showing us what she calls the gem of the dominican sisters of san rafael's convent. >> this chapel inspired in neoclassical design. >> the chapel modeled after a dominican monastery in england, is part of the santa sabina center, a nondenominational place for meditation and spiritual retreat. >> people who come here come home to recover a sense of themselves built near dominican university in 1939, the center originally housed young women preparing to enter the religious order. it was the prayer chapel for the sisters to celebrate

morning and evening prayer together here. >> but the order's dwindling numbers and rising cost of maintenance has forced the sisters to make a tough choice and sell the center. they love. it would feel like a total desecration if it were destroyed or replaced, but we have to accept whatever comes next. >> we're surrendering this to a future that we know not and control. not the retreat property sits on just over two acres, complete with 38 bedrooms meeting spaces and prayer rooms, a place of tranquil city and peace. >> the sheer beauty of this building speaks of what is really one of the deepest values of the dominican order for seeing god in everything in creation. >> i've given retreats all over the world. this is by far my favorite retreat center. >> richard miller has been leading retreats to santa sabina center for decades. he says losing it will be a loss for the community. >> i was very sad and i still am

it is going to be one of those days tomorrow where inland areas and parts of the bay will be sweating. but along the coastline, we're going to get some relief tomorrow. let's take a look at a live picture right now and as you will notice, just beautiful blue skies from our south beach camera. the perfect backdrop for the blue angels. i do want to show you preliminary records so far. these are not the official temperatures yet. we'll wait for the national weather service shortly after five, but san jose has reached 95 degrees. so far. the record previous was 95, set in 1987, downtown oakland, 93. that would tie the old record set in 1976. but of course, these temperatures may go up a little bit more. so we'll have to wait and see. just kind of keep that in mind as we look at live doppler seven. fog is well off the coastline, up and down the state. we have been dealing with clear conditions. and for fleet week, here's a look at the forecast. it's going to be nice for the air show tomorrow. san francisco, 88 degrees. temperature in the morning, 63 cooler with some fog on sunday. but i don't think the fog layer

will be deep enough to where the blue angels will have any problems they can fly above the fog layer. so it's just definitely going to be a changing pattern for the second half of your weekend. certainly hazy skies from our mount tam cam 86 in the city, low 90s oakland mountain view right now 95. in san jose 93 degrees in palo alto from our emeryville camera we are seeing just a beautiful view as we look back towards the golden gate bridge there mid 90s novato santa rosa, 93 in napa fair field, 97 degrees. it's hot. concord livermore mid 90s and nothing but sunshine from our sutro tower camera. the heat hangs around for one more day tomorrow. fog returns sunday. it's going to turn breezy and cooler and much cooler for monday with showers arriving in the afternoon and the evening. 5:00 tonight. if you're stepping out on this friday evening, it's still going to be warm to hot out there as the temperatures start to drop at 8 p.m. most noticeable near the coast. and then as we head towards tomorrow morning, you will notice the temperatures do come down quite

swift. >> really? yeah all right. time now for consumer news seven on your side's. >> michael finney is here with a look at the headlines. and a scam that has cost people a lot of money. >> it's a good time to be a scammer. as it turns out, all the numbers are out. a new report says since 2021, americans lost more than $2.5 billion to scams that started on social media. most victims were taken in by online shopping frauds. their complaint is victim to send in their money and then never see the ordered product. young people are the most frequent victims, while those scams are the most frequent. the ftc says 53% of all money that was reported being lost to fraud went to investment scams with those grifts more than half the victims say they used crypto to pay the scammers. romance scams account for the second largest amount of money lost to fraud. two companies are recalling more than 70 million so-called

rolling candies due to choking hazards. the consumer pardon me? the consumer product safety commission says the recall stems from the choking death of a seven year old new york girl back in april. she died when the candies rolling ball, you can see it right there in the picture, got loose from the top. it got stuck in her throat and she passed away. that treat was a cocoa candy made by cgr distribution an that company is recalling some 145,000 of those candies. another company called candy dynamics is recalling 70 million of its slime licker sour rolling liquid candy. you can find the list of recall candy on the ccpc website. getting the government rebate for buying an electric car is about to be a whole lot easier starting next year. the inflation reduction reduction act will allow dealerships to take up to $7,500

reporter reena roy with the story. >> president biden taking a victory lap in washington following a surprisingly robust jobs report from the labor department. it's no accident. >> it's biden's comics were growing the economy from the middle out, the bottom up, not the top down. >> 336,000 jobs added in september, well above what economists expected and above the average monthly gain of 267,000 over the last year. most of the jobs in government health care and leisure and hospitality . >> my economic plan is bringing supply chains home and investing in industries of the future so we can make things in america again with american workers. wages were up 0.2% for the month and 4.2% for the year. >> the unemployment rate held steady at 3.8. >> and i guess if you're looking for a silver lining here, not so much for workers, but maybe for the federal reserve is that wages rose, but not as quickly

as we expected. and this strong report means companies keep hiring despite high interest rates and a number of challenges currently affecting the us economy. >> we have union workers striking and different industries across the country. >> we have chaos in washington. we have higher interest rates. prices are still not where we need them to be. so we do have elevated inflation, yet we are continuing to see a very strong jobs market. this report will help the fed determine whether or not to raise interest rates again as they continue their efforts in lowering inflation. >> they'll also be keeping an eye on the consumer price index report coming out next thursday. reena roy, abc news new york. >> well, stocks rallied today after the release of that jobs report. >> the dow jones industrial average gained 288 points or 0.87. the nasdaq rose 1.6% and the s&p 500 added 1.18. more questions over the biden administration's plan to build a border wall along the us mexican

border. >> you'll recall during the trump presidency, congress earmarked hundreds of millions of dollars for border wall construction. now some are asking, well, why build it now? if the funds have been available since biden took office? well, the president defended the move amid what is a historic uptick in illegal border crossings from mexico into the us. there's nothing under the law other than they have to use the money for what it was appropriated. >> i can't stop that. do you believe the border wall works? no. this decision today, it feels like too little, too late . >> customs and border protection plans indicate the new construction will be an 18 foot portable barrier that is different than the 30 foot design under the trump administration. >> even former house speaker kevin mccarthy says he is not resigning, reports today indicated the bakersfield republican was considering stepping down before the end of his term in january of 2025. as a congressman. but he told reporters this afternoon that he's not leaving the house early

you bet. heads up. if you're heading to a farm or maybe a farmer's market to get some pumpkins this weekend, the epa says those who want to make a sustainable choice should ask if they use synthetic fertilizer. kaiser experts say those types of fertilizers take a lot of fossil fuels to produce and can then release large amounts of nitrous oxide and phosphorus. and they contribute to climate change. some farms use things like manure and compost or maybe green waste as fertilizer, and that can have a positive impact. really cool thing about agriculture is it is a major source of greenhouse gases, but it can also be a major solution in terms of climate change because we know the practices that that farmers can use to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. gault says manure combined with other practices and planting of the crops that cover the soil, can actually capture carbon to help reduce emissions. and marc benioff salesforce has been very active in trying to promote the planting of more trees so that we can reverse some of the
