defense forces have declared a state of alert for war following a surprise attack carried out by palestinian militants. >> the idf says at least 2200 rockets were fired towards israel, though hamas claimed at least 5000 rockets were fired, all landing in southern and central israel. emily schrader says she's an israeli american and captured this video of the aftermath. >> so this is very close to where i live in tel aviv. you can see here where there was a direct hit. >> images on social media show heavily armed palestinian militants on motorbikes and pickup trucks crossing into israeli settlements. this video appears to show militants taking hostages in israel near the border with gaza. another video also appears to show a woman being taken hostage in gaza. israeli forces launching massive retaliatory airstrikes. this building collapsing, flames then lighting up the night sky in gaza as those israeli strikes

continued. israeli's prime minister, benjamin netanyahu says israeli defense forces will immediately use all of its strength to destroy the capabilities of hamas. president biden spoke with netanyahu and has reaffirmed us support for israel in this moment of tragedy. >> i want to say to them and to the world and to terrorists everywhere that the united states stands with israel. we'll make sure that they have the help their citizens need and they can continue to defend themselves. >> the state department says secretary of state antony blinken spoke with palestinian authority president mahmoud abbas, urging him to take steps to restore calm and stability in the west bank. the fbi and department of homeland security says there is no specific intelligence indicating a threat to the us in relation to israel, but they did issue a notice to police across the us, urging them to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. law enforcement in some cities like new york have increased their presence around sensitive

areas in response. emwin. abc news, washington. >> manny ikuto civic leader and owner of manny's restaurant and gathering place in san francisco's mission district, is in israel. he's visiting his family in beit shemesh, near jerusalem. we reached out to him there tonight. when i was in synagogue, there were two times where the sirens went off and all the kids had to hide underneath their parents and underneath the tables. >> were screaming and crying. and the adults in the room had to sing as loud as we could to kind of drown out the sounds of the sirens and keep the kids from being traumatized. >> and back in the bay area, we're getting local response to the conflict as well as a better understanding of what's behind it. abc's seven news reporter tara campbell joins us now live from the newsroom. she spoke to a variety of experts tonight on the conflict in the middle east . tara. >> yeah, lauren this evening i spoke with activists and lawmakers on both sides of this

flights are being canceled at israel's ben gurion airport. some spent hours at check in today hoping to take off. well, we sent out the alert about the israeli israel attacks through the abc seven news mobile app at 736 this morning. it's one way to stay on top of breaking news as it comes into our newsroom. just be sure to enable the push alert feature. a neighborhood in suisun city was evacuated this afternoon as a wildfire threatened their homes. the fire broke out around noon and the cause is still unknown. a few homes near wylie lane did have some minor damage. abc7ew reporter answer hassan spoke to people who saw the flames come dangerously close to their property. late saturday evening. >> fire crews continue to monitor the aftermath of a wildfire that burned more than 30 acres in suisun city, threatening nearby homes and businesses. how close was the fire to your facility? >> i would have to say literally

in our backyard. and it would have came in if the fence wasn't there. >> jasmine peete is the sales supervisor at pick and pull an auto dismantling shop which sells car parts. the damage along the entire back fence line shows how the fire was kept out. that likely prevented another problem, says peete. given the potentially toxic material at the facility. >> we deal with a lot of chemicals, fluids like gas, oil , freon. sometimes we even deal with hazardous waste. we did have a response from cal fire and they did do an air drop for us, which helped contain the blaze as well. >> captain matty scott with suisun fire protection district was the first on scene. he says the fire broke out around 12 noon and quickly spread as the winds began to pick up speed. despite the wet winter, the grass is dry, which is always a concern for this time of year, says captain matty. especially here in solano county. >> this is still fire season. yeah, october, even into november, our we always get a warm spell for this time of year. in october. so this is can

be expected in this part of the state. >> the fire also prompted an evacuation order for the nearby neighborhood. >> all of a sudden we just see a bunch of smoke blow into our backyard, got dark and there was ash just immediately blown into our faces. >> and it was orange and super scary. >> the macy family was evacuated for four hours. when they got home, they found parts of their backyard damaged by the fire burnt fence and plants, ashes everywhere, but no reports of injuries. and the family is just thankful to be safe. >> yeah, i'm so happy. we see so happy to see my all neighbors are good and they're all safe. the cause of the fire is still unknown in solano county and san hassan. >> abc seven news. well, certainly was warm out in solano county today and the same can be said for much of the bay area. >> but changes are on the way starting tomorrow. spencer christian joins us for a first look at our forecast. >> okay, lauren, we certainly did have widespread heat again today, but it's subsiding just a little bit. in fact, the heat advisory that was in effect

earlier this evening has now expired. so let's take a look at the 24 hour temperature change and you can see it is sharply cooler in most locations than at this time last night here in san francisco, 11 degrees cooler right now than at this time last night. temperature readings generally right now at this moment in the upper 60s to about 70 around the bay shoreline, which is still pretty mild inland areas that were up to about 90 or even higher today are now in the upper 60s to low 70s. so these are forecast headlines to keep in mind. cooler at the coast tomorrow, but still very warm inland clouds will increase monday and tuesday with a chance of some showers. much cooler pattern develops early next week. and despite the changes coming our way, tomorrow will be a great viewing day for the blue angels air show here in san francisco. more details on that. a little bit later. >> lauren, great to know. thank you, spencer, san francisco fire department rescued a man and his dog at fort funston this morning. officers say the dog got loose and ended about 100ft down a steep cliff. crews used ropes and harnesses to hoist

aerial display today from the blue angels as the stars of fleet week soared over san francisco this afternoon. soon, you'll have one more day to check them out. it was a perfect fog free day for flying, but it was hot. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has a look at how people kept cool while enjoying the spectacular show. all eyes in the sky. >> nobody on the marina green missing a second of the navy's blue angels. doing what they do best over san francisco bay. spectator says no, you've got to see it to believe it. the roar and rumble of the jets at speeds of 700mph. clayton earl from san francisco never misses the show. >> it doesn't get old. it just

into the middle of the week for tonight, we'll see clouds increasing near the coastline and there'll be some drizzle offshore, but it'll be dry over land areas overnight lows will be in the mid 50s along the coastline, mainly upper 50s in the north bay and right around the bay shoreline, inland east bay will still be pretty mild with lows in the low to mid 60s in some spots and a similar range of lows down in the south bay overnight. tomorrow's highs 65 at half moon bay, 70 here in san francisco under sunny skies, mainly upper 70s around the bay shoreline highs in the mid to upper 80s in the north bay, the inland east bay will be our warmest region as it often is with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s tomorrow. so that's the coolest we've seen. high temperatures in the inland east bay for the last four days or so and mid to upper 80s in the south bay here in san francisco, another sunny day for the final day of fleet week and for the air show of the blue angels. so in the late afternoon we may see a little bit of a marine layer developing. perhaps a few coastal clouds will push in through the golden gate, but

should not obscure our viewing for the blue angels tomorrow. so look for a nice, sunny and mild day here in san francisco. san francisco once again tomorrow. and then we get a sharp change in our weather pattern on monday and tuesday with temperatures dropping sharply because of a cold front that will be swinging through a weak one early monday. that'll bring us just some light rain or showers late monday into early tuesday. and after that, the frontal system fizzles and we're left with just a cooler weather pattern. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. despite the fact that the rain will be very light, we're giving it a ranking of level one on the abc seven exclusive storm impact scale. then on tuesday maybe a lingering morning shower, but much cooler weather monday, tuesday and wednesday and late next week it starts to warm up again. but nothing like the warmth we've had. so far for this weekend. right? right just mild, but not hot. >> well, the cooler weather will ease us into fall. >> it will indeed. >> all right. i like that. yes thank you. well, this is something you don't see very often. the entire herd was allowed to cross a state

global destination. that plan requires building a better market street. many say that's critical to the local businesses that are still recovering from the pandemic, like other major cities are doing it and coming back to life. abc7 news reporter leanne melendez with a look at how the goal to reinvent market street is going. >> in 1962, market street was on the verge of a major restoration project which back then caught the attention of the new york times. that came after a city report titled what to do about market street. back then, the goal was to add new life into market street as a center for shopping, business and

entertainment. but wait a minute . it's 2023 is in san francisco trying to do that again. alex hanna has owned oxford street clothing for 30 years. >> there were lots of traffic. now the traffic is very slow. the only thing we keeping us here because we have a loyal customer. if you depend on the traffic i want, you won't be survive. >> that foot traffic or car traffic, both of them is hurting. he initially blames the demise of some businesses on the city's efforts to slowly begin banning private cars. but then in 2012, there was renewed hope for the revital ization of the area. when twitter and other businesses occupied residency here. but that proved not to be the answer. everyone anticipated. and then just months before the pandemic, the city removed all car traffic from market street. that's when

the number of bicyclists on market street increased by 25. then the city shut down and those workers that were supposed to revitalize the neighborhood dwindled because hardly anyone was coming to work downtown. even the bicycle coalition admits bike commuting downtown is nowhere near what it once was. we wanted to see why many bicyclists were staying away from market street so we rode. one of the things that bicyclists often complain about is the uneven surfaces on market street, not to mention the potholes and you really have to pay attention because you can really get seriously hurt with the city needs to do in the department of public works needs to do is they need to start repaving our streets wherever they are. >> we would like the bike lanes to also be part of that because if you make safe pavement for people biking, they will use those streets, she says. >> any revit's ization of market street has to include bicyclists and pedestrian as there is a

massive construction project underway. part of that better market street makeover. the project was sold on a much larger scale. it was supposed to make market street car free from octavia street to the embarcadero, but the city had to return the federal money for the project because it was unable to meet an imposed deadline. >> there are lots of unfulfilled promises, but that doesn't mean in that better market street can't continue to be worked towards a future of sustainable transportation. >> business owners along market street insist customers will not return unless they feel safe and the area is clean. >> just the cleanliness are, you know, don't like stepping in poop every other day. so supervisor matt dorsey wants to create a downtown commercial core police district. >> it would dedicate police patrols in the area, if you can imagine sort of an area that would be from the ferry building down market street down to

market and van ness. >> it should also encompass union square. it should also encompass the moscone center convention areas and the hotels around there. >> we need to get people to say, let's go to market street. like, let's do stuff on market street. many shuttle is a small business owner who also happens to be on the municipal transportation board as a san francisco resident, he'd like to see a section of market street converted into a promenade. maybe even turn it into a market, maybe plant a redwood grove landscape. it flowers music, poetry, activations actually create something happening on the street that brings people to market street to do things. >> this is a beautiful city. i love it. but unfortunately we were facing lots of problems here with the homeless, with the shoplifter, with, you know, it's very tough. it's not a piece of cake. now >> it's going to take time.

>> it's going to take a lot of time. a long time. you could say, in san francisco. >> leanne melendez, abc7 news. >> officials in maui are urging the governor of hawaii to delay the reopening of the western side of the island tomorrow to tourists. this comes after wildfires devastate the town of lahaina back in august. maui county officials voted unanimous on a resolution postponing the reopening, claiming residents need more time to heal and rebuild. and the maui wildfires claim 97 lives and left more than 30 people missing, making them the deadliest in us history. hundreds of people are feared dead and many more injured after a powerful earthquake hit western afghanistan near the border with iran. the 6.3 magnitude quake struck about 25 miles from the western city of herat. many buildings were damaged, trapping people in the rubble. and there were at least three powerful aftershocks. the united nations gave a preliminary figure of 320

dominican sisters of san rafael's convent. this chapel inspired in neoclassical design , the chapel modeled after a dominican monastery in england, is part of the santa sabina center, a nondenominational place for meditation and spiritual retreat. people who come here come to recover, a sense of themselves built near dominican university in 1939. >> the center originally housed young women preparing to enter the religious order. >> it was the prayer chapel for the sisters to celebrate. morning and evening prayer together. but the order's dwindling numbers and rising cost of maintenance has forced the sisters to make a tough choice and sell the center they love. or it would feel like a total desecration if it were destroyed or replaced. but we have to accept whatever comes next. we're surrendering this to a future that we know not and control, not the retreat

. >> sister margaret looks to the heavens for the perfect beneficiary to help preserve the mission. started long ago by the convent. we ask you and your viewers to pray with us about that in san rafael, cornell bernard, abc seven news. >> well, spencer christian is here with whether we have a mix of weather ahead of us. >> a mix is a good way of putting it. lauren we're getting out of a hot spell, a heat wave, actually, and into a period of cooling that might even bring some rainfall for tonight. we'll see increasing clouds near the coastline, maybe even some drizzle offshore. your overnight lows will range from upper 50s to low 60s for the most part. highs tomorrow still on the warm side, but not the extreme heat that we've seen the last few days. so inland highs will warm up to about 88, 89, maybe 90 degrees right around the bay shoreline, mid to upper 70s on the coast mid 60s where we have seen 80s for the last several days. now the forecast ahead shows highs on monday dropping off sharply to mainly 60s and low 70s a same range on tuesday.

trey lance might be giving the cowboys well, the 49 ers countered that move, acquiring a former cowboy to bolster their pass rush. enter randy gregory. he signed a five year, $70 million deal with the broncos as a free agent, but denver was going to cut him, saying he was not a good fit. the 49 ers traded a sixth round pick in next year's draft to get gregory and a seventh rounder from denver. the broncos are also paying him $10 million while the niners are just paying the veteran's minimum. gregory playing opposite nick bosa could be a nightmare for quarterbacks, but he will not be ready to play on sunday. on the offensive side of the ball, christian mccaffrey has scored a touchdown in 13 straight games. that's a 49 ers record. and if he scores on sunday, cmc will become the first niners since roger craig in 1985 with a touchdown in each game through the first five weeks of the season. the niners have knocked dallas out of the playoffs two years in a row. but mccaffrey says past results may
