weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen all right, zach, good morning to you. >> hi, everyone. low clouds and fog have returned since the overnight hours at the coast and the fog has been quite dense. the national weather service has issued a dense fog advisory for another hour from the golden gate bridge. the peninsula. and there is a cold front on the way that will certainly continue our cooldown. what a gorgeous view from our exploratorium camera 58. downtown. it is 62 in oakland with 66 mountain view. look at that, 70 in san jose and the look from vollmer peak shows how that marine layer is compressed. high pressure still in control, but it is fading away. upper 50s santa rosa low 70 by the delta. we're still going to have some warm numbers inland, but look at the cooldown already 3 to 11 degrees cooler compared to this time yesterday. so the fog is quite dense. it's going to be with us throughout the day, but it is hanging along the coast. it'll be developing an awfully close to the bay as we get into the late afternoon. so hopefully not impacting the blue angels, but in the meantime, 70s and 80s around the

bay. upper 80s inland. we'll talk about the rain, the timing for monday and tuesday coming up. >> zach, we'll check in with you shortly. lisa now we want to turn to that developing news from israel. israel's security cabinet officially declaring that israel is at war. it comes as officials say the attacks near the gaza border have killed at least 600. israeli is at least 370 palestinians have been killed, according to authorities. thousands more on both sides are injured. the israeli government says at least 100 israeli citizens and soldiers are being held hostage by hamas fighters. at the same time, israeli strategic affairs minister has said america is are among the hostages being held. they have declined to estimate the number of americans, but that news just now coming in after they previously declined to say how many americans were being held hostage. now, israeli defense force officials say they will do anything to free and return hostages taken into gaza. they also say this is the most devastating attack to hit the state of israel since it was created 75 years ago. this all began with a surprise attack by
9:04 am
hamas militants. they fired thousands of rockets from gaza into israel saturday. they also sent gunmen into southern israeli cities. some even entered via paragliders. the attack is drawing worldwide condemnation. president joe biden reaffirming us support for israel yesterday from the white house and the united states stands with the people of israel in the face of these terrorist assaults. >> israel has the right to defend itself and its people. this is not a moment for any party hostile to israel to exploit these attacks, to seek advantage. the world is watching and white house officials say it's too early to know if iran had any involvement with the attacks in israel. >> the fbi and the department of homeland security have issued a public safety notification to law enforcement across the us, urging them to stay vigilant during the ongoing situation and back in the bay area, we're getting local response to the conflict as well as a better understanding of what's behind it. abc7 news reporter tara campbell spoke with a variety of experts on the conflict in the middle east. >> the sights and sounds of

chaos in the middle east. a palestinian attack and israeli response. i think this is one of the most significant moments of palestinian resistance that we have ever seen. george bisharat is an emeritus professor at uc san francisco and an expert on the middle east. >> certainly the most significant military act of resistance ever against israel by the palestinians. >> and he says the palestinian attack has likely been long in the making for hamas to be able to pull this off in a surprise way like this is an incredible feat right now. >> you know, whatever you make of it as a as a matter of a military operation, pretty incredible. >> as a jew and i know i speak for my jewish colleagues in the legislature, we are all both horrified and terrified about what's happening in israel state senator scott wiener is a member

of the california legislative jewish caucus. israel is not perfect by any stretch. i have my own very public criticisms. but what happened today crosses a red line. nothing justifies the terrorist attacks that we saw today. >> this is a horrific day. the violence that we're seeing today is disturbing to everyone who cares about peace and justice. edward ackman. >> mitchell leads the council on american-islamic relations until the occupation ends here, we're going to keep seeing this cycle of violence repeat itself for years. >> and years to come. >> and as for what comes next, the professor says it could go several ways. >> the fact of the number of hostages provides the palestine with a significant lever against the israeli state power and may cause a quicker end to this than and less violent end to this than we might otherwise see. >> or he says israel could respond as it has in the past. >> another scenario is that

israel will mass go ahead and do as it has done in the past. and possibly even worse. >> that's tara campbell reporting. now to afghanistan, where entire villages were razed by two powerful earthquakes in the northwestern part of the country. the taliban says 800 people have died. they say earlier reports that place the number of dead at 2000 was inaccurate. that that it included deaths and injuries. the two tremors both had a 6.3 magnitude. they hit in herat province along the border with iran. now, officials say people were trapped in the rubble of damaged buildings and there were at least seven aftershocks as officials in maui are urging the governor of hawaii to delay the reopening of the western side of the island to tourists. it's plan to reopen in phases starting today, of course, wildfires devastated the town of lahaina back in august. yesterday, maui county officials voted unanimously on a resolution to postpone the reopening, claiming residents need more time to heal and rebuild. the maui wildfires

the facility. >> we deal with a lot of chemical oils, fluids like gas, oil, oil, freon, sometimes we even deal with hazardous waste. >> we did have a response from cal fire and they did do an air drop for us, which helped contain the blaze as well. >> captain maddy scott with suisun fire protection district, was the first on scene. he says the fire broke out around 12 noon and quickly spread as the winds began to pick up speed. despite the wet winter, the grass is dry, which is always a concern for this time of year, says captain maddy, especially here in solano county. >> this is still fire season. yeah, october. even into november, we always get a warm spell for this time of year. in october. so this is can be expected in this part of the state. >> the fire also prompted an evacuation order for the nearby neighborhood. >> all of a sudden we just see a bunch of smoke blow into our backyard. >> got dark. there was ash just immediately blown into our faces and it was orange and super scary. >> the mussey family was evacuated for four hours. when
9:15 am
they got home, they found parts of their backyard damaged by the fire, burnt fence and plants. ashes everywhere. but no reports of injuries. and the family is just thankful to be safe. >> yeah, i'm so happy. we see so happy to see my all neighbors are good. they're all safe. >> the cause of the fire is still unknown in solano county. ansar hassan, abc seven news. >> and as the threat of wildfires increases, we're learning that what your house is made of and small changes to your property can have a big impact on how vulnerable you and your home are. abc's matt gutman has more on the latest fire safety research. >> we're at a one of a kind test facility where researchers study the science of wildfires, something i've spent much of my career covering for abc news in california. wow. the intensity of that is absolutely enormous. the heat is overwhelming. it's almost nothing they could do with that wind. >> this is a firestorm. we're going to the other side of the
9:16 am
car here at the insurance institute for business and home safety or ebay, is that powerful wind is simulated by this towering wall of more than 100 and dustrial strength fans blasting those red hot embers toward structures. >> and this helps scientists learn what kinds of building materials will burn and what can withstand the hot fury of mother nature. experts say it's those scorching embers, though tiny, that can turn small fires into town, destroying events. it was those wind driven embers in maui in august that experts say helped the historic and deadly inferno to spread so fast, killing at least 97 people and engulfing more than 2000 structures, most of them homes, but not this one featured in the honolulu civil beat virtually unscathed. some called it a miracle, but researchers at ibhs point to two factors that likely saved the structure. a commercial grade steel roof and river stones surrounding the home. the home owners telling
9:17 am
the civil beat they replaced their traditional landscaping with the stones not to protect their home from fire, but from water and termite damage. little did they know that one of the key tactics vhs teaches is creating a minimum of a five foot fire resistant buffer zone around your home using hardscapes and noncombustible fencing. >> think of it like your moat. you are keeping wild fire and embers away from your structure. >> this time lapse video shows a fire ignited along a fence between two structures. watch as the fire never reaches the home on the right because it can't pass through that metal fence. the wooden fence on the left, however, acts like a wick of a candle, bringing the fire directly to the house and now they've built a home just for us. you can see there are two distinct sides here. one has this wooden mulch outside. do you see a wooden deck or wooden siding? the other side is a wildfire prepared wood home.
9:18 am
these are fire resistant sidings. you can see the metal in the deck that fence, the part that actually touches the house that is also made out of metal and you can see this hardscaping all around it. so under the supervise of the richburg fire department, we fired up those ember generators and they allow me to step right in their path. and in just minutes, these embers are coming in fast and just now, this is the start of a fire right underneath this bush here, right next to the deck. this could be the thing that ignites this whole house here, this deck, the one made out of steel, nothing. >> and this deck right now is catching fire. that thing is going to blow up. >> this deck is now completely engulfed in flames. it's going to take this out in less than two minutes later. it did exactly that. all the while, the right side remained seemingly untouched. this house is virtually gone. you can hear you can feel the heat from those flames right now. it is
9:19 am
absolutely massive. and you can see how quickly that wooden side of this house was engulfed in flames. it's in the eaves right now, which also means it's going through those vents. those vents were covered in steel protective mesh, but they were the wrong size. the hole is so big they let the embers through. the rule of thumb here is that you don't want mesh that can have a nail or a golf tee go through it. you want it to be a bit finer than that. something that can block this stuff that way. the embers can't get through that mesh and into your home. right now, the firefighters are about to come in and douse this thing because it's gotten too hot. >> that was abc's matt gutman reporting. well, back here at home, a man and his dog are safe after being rescued yesterday from a cliff near fort funston. officers say the dog got loose and ended up about 100ft down the steep cliff. the san francisco fire department was called in and had to use ropes and harnesses to hoist them to
9:20 am
safety. last year, crews carried out around 100 rescues at fort funston alone. so definitely want to watch out for cliffs if you're out and about. also going to be on the lookout for some cooler temperatures. and we've had these last couple of days, which i think we're all kind of eagerly awaiting at this point. >> yes, back to the jackets, the down coats. i'm telling you much cooler today. and wait till you see monday and tuesday. not only the cool weather, but we're getting into some gray sky and not only monday. one cold front. there's a second one that will clip us as well. so i hope you enjoyed it. the warmth as we look at our satellite picture right now, this is a visible image. so you can see the fog footprint all up and down the california coastline. and then that other texture is a cold front to the north and west of us. and we will see some active weather in the pacific northwest and that means some raindrops accumulating on precip for us. monday and perhaps even into tuesday. here's a closer look and look at that fog, how it is just entering the gap there. so it is going to be there for the

it really did have to do with demand. a lot more people were applying for their passports this year and traveling that caused the system to bog down. >> i heard from a record number of travelers over the past couple of years needing help. travelers like the east bay's david yandell. he and his wife each paid an extra $60 for expedited service. we didn't want to miss this occasion. it was very important to us and to our family, and it worked fine for rosie. but it didn't work at all for me. now, the state department is getting on top of the workload and getting a passport is happening much more quickly. >> as of october 2nd, we were able to reduce our passport processing times by two weeks. so now for routine service, you could expect it to take 8 to 11 weeks and for expedited service , you could expect that to take 5 to 7 weeks. >> so that is time enough for many to get a passport in time for holiday travel. if they get moving. and by january, processing times should be at pre-pandemic levels.

lose 52 to 40. they're three and three on the season. have a great sunday, everybody. i'm casey pratt. >> it's been a great sunday. so far. let's now get a check of the bay area forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. >> all right zach good morning to you. we have the fog all the way up and down the coast moving through the gaps and also a cold front that is going to move in earlier tomorrow. so as we look at live doppler seven, notice a solid deck of stratus. there we go in closer and look at that flowing right through the golden gate there. so i don't think it's going to get any less throughout the day. we'll have mostly sunny skies, but this may be a concern for the blue angels later on today. right now, in santa cruz, it is 59 degrees in the 70s. later on today, it was in the 90s yesterday, 60 san francisco, 62. in oakland, upper 60s, mountain view, san jose, nice and mild at 7067. palo alto lots of fog half moon bay 55 and from our roof camera you can see a little bit of haze there 60
9:50 am
santa rosa there is fog along the sonoma county coast, 63 novato 66 in napa. you're down to the upper 40s. earlier 73 by the delta mid 60s, a nice and mild in our inland valleys and the deck of low clouds here scattering out but it is solid right along the shoreline so that dense fog advisory for the peninsula for another hour cooler today. still on the warmer side inland, but we're not seeing those upper 90s or 100 degrees more like about 90 and our warmest interior valleys. and then we're going to see a chance to showers not only monday, but a secondary system on tuesday. so there's a look at the sunny day today. then the fog moves back by three, 4:00 in the afternoon and then spreading across the bay overnight mid level clouds, high level clouds today, later on. and then we're going to see this cold front as it pushes on through throughout the morning hours, pausing this at about 1030. so we've got rain from sonoma into napa. and then by the afternoon, it kind of falls apart. so we'll get into
9:51 am
partly cloudy skies. but here's your tuesday morning and then another system slipping to the south throughout the day late on tuesday. so adding the rainfall totals monday and tuesday day, a couple of weeks, systems wetting the pavement. the west sloping, the west facing slopes will pick up anywhere from about 5/100 to over two 2/10. otherwise as you can see, not a whole lot out there. 5/100 maybe for hayward. but getting the ground wet, increasing the relative humidity , the wind direction now and onshore component livermore today in the upper 80s we should be in the low 80s. so still above average. look at the drop monday, tuesday, a little bit of a recovery on wednesday and boy, this is a tough call today. partly cloudy skies to mostly sunny conditions. but that fog is going to be at the coast. highs in the 60, mid 60s. that's a good 20 degrees cooler than yesterday. highs today from the mid 70s in oakland to upper 80s in concord. 83in napa, san jose
