israel declares war following the surprise attack by hamas. this action likely means the fighting will escalate and perhaps lead to an assault on the ground. good evening. i'm j.r. stone israeli forces have intensified their bombing of gaza in the last couple of hours. the wave of attacks between israel and hamas now blame for at least 1100 deaths. cnn confirms some have civilian hostages held by hamas have been killed. and tonight, iran says it was not involved in

saturday's hamas offensive. abc news reporter alison kosik has the latest on the situation and the pentagon's response. >> the violence began early saturday, a massive barrage of hamas rockets fired into israel. the highly coordinated attack catching israel off guard. this music festival turning to panic. jennifer dempsey's 22 year old daughter, kim was at that festival. she is now missing. >> kim didn't realize that there was like 7 or 8 toyota vans full of terrorists, and they just shot everywhere. they just shot them, slaughtered them like ducks. >> the israeli rescue service says more than 260 bodies were recovered at the scene. videos show palestine minion militants taking israeli hostages near the border with gaza, including young children and the elderly. the government says as many as 100 people have been kidnaped. prime minister benjamin netanyahu declaring we are

kidnaped held a press conference tonight to plea for a meeting with the government for any help in finding their children. at 10:00, she called us and said, mommy, we were bombed. >> they shot at us. the car was shot. we cannot drive. everybody here is hurt. there were four kids in the kids there were 23, 25 and 30. everybody was shocked. they were bleeding. and she was talking to me and saying, mommy, help us. we don't know what to do. and i'm on the phone with her and i'm saying, mommy, we love you. >> it's okay. >> we are trying to find a way to take you out of there. we are selling people. and i know i'm lying because i don't have answers and we didn't have any answer. no nobody had. >> israel's army hasn't released a specific number, but hamas officials say dozens are being held captive in undisclosed locations. hundreds of palestinian supporters turned out to the israeli consulate on

montgomery street late this afternoon. it was met with a big show of pro israeli counter-protesters. abc7 news reporter suzanne fan was there and gives us a closer look. >> three palestine they chanted one, two, three, four. >> occupation no more. >> they were armed with signs and palestinian flags demonstrate fighters showing unwavering support. >> we are here to stand in support of the people of palestine. >> hundreds of pro-palestine protesters packed montgomery street outside the israeli consulate in downtown san francisco, making sure their message was heard. they said they want the us to end financial aid to israel and they want an end to the israeli blockade of gaza. >> 75 years now of israeli occupation of palestine. >> those rallying to support palestinian resistance to military control were met with strong opposition. an counter-protesters turned out waving israeli flags as palestinian and israeli

supporters faced off police moved in to keep the peace. the pro palestine rally drew support from all corners of the community. i'm a jewish mom and i believe very strongly in ending the cycle of suffering that is just bringing ongoing and infinite suffering to both jewish people and palestinians across the globe. >> i see the attacks as self-defense. >> i am not a proponent of violence. i'm a nonviolent person myself. but i think that we need to see and think about the whole story of why these attacks might occur. >> i know that jewish voice for peace we mourn the deaths of everyone who's been killed during this latest situation. >> the conflict in israel complicated, and it continues to draw concern and criticism from palestine and israel. supporters in san francisco. suzanne phon, abc seven news. a group came together on the peninsula for a

shock and mourning that's happening right now, some soul searching. >> we're trying to figure out where we go from here. >> tyler gregory, the ceo of the bay area jewish community relations council, says members of his group are still processing the fighting overseas as he is calling for members of the public interested in supporting lives impacted by the conflict. to donate to the jewish federation and nonprofits helping with relief abroad. >> there are international efforts supporting humanitarian needs on the ground from supporting medical responses to broken families. >> he is not the only organization calling for a peaceful solution. the coalition for american-islamic relations tells abc seven news it is encouraging anyone interested in supporting palestine to donate to islamic relief usa. in a statement, kerry is calling on us and arab governments to exert maximum pressure on the israeli government to honor their obligate actions under international law to respect palestine human rights and end the occupation. we reached out to other arab community groups in the bay area to see if they are helping with humanitarian efforts. we're waiting to hear

our david muir will be reporting and anchoring world news tonight from israel starting tomorrow so you can catch him at 330 right after getting answers on abc seven. well what a difference a day or two can make. we have been talking about heat and now there is rain in the forecast. let's get right to spencer christian for a first look at your weather. okay j.r. here's your day planner for tomorrow. >> of course, we know that it has cooled down sharply since yesterday. so the heat has gone. the cooling is here and there's a little bit of rain on the way as well. early tomorrow morning we'll see cloudy skies with some light rain beginning to develop over the north bay. temperatures will be ranging from about 58 at the coast to 62 inland later in the day around midday or so. we'll see more widely scattered showers. but there may be a few downpours, mainly in the north bay. this is mainly a north bay event. temperatures around midday will only be in the mid to upper 60s from the bay to inland. later in the afternoon, there'll be some partial clearing as those showers sweep

luis angel gathered in hood river, oregon in they did a paddle out and also left flowers in the water in memory of him. they say hood river was where ndeye spent many of his summers. we have some video of him from several years ago. he was last seen by friends about 100ft offshore. and they say he was attacked by a shark. but officials have not yet confirmed that. developing news, tourists are returning to west maui during a phased reopening while fires devastated lahaina back in august and claimed at least 97 lives. some residents signed a

petition to delay the reopening as families continue to struggle to recover. one food truck owner says business traffic is down dramatically and now they're just trying to survive five probably from like 800 to 1000 people a night between, you know, tourists and local people . >> and right now, we have about 20, maybe 30, the most. we just need to keep moving forward. i understand a lot of people are having issues with opening, but we need to survive. it's the only way the hawaii tourism authority says tourism is the number one driver of that state's economy. >> a push to use cannabis to help revitalize california's struggling downtowns went up in smoke this weekend. the governor vetoed the measure to allow amsterdam style cannabis cafes in california. the san francisco assembly member, matt haney, authored the legislation. it would have let local governments license cannabis

vetoed the bill out of concern that it coul smoke free workplae protections. as governor. newsom also vetoed a bill that would have capped the price. insurance companies can charge for insulin at $35 for a 30 day supply. tsay newsom did say earlier this year that california has a contract with a pharmaceutical company and will start making its brand . the governor did point to this when announcing his veto attorney general rob bonta sued over the price of insulin in january and manufacturers responded by saying they'd lower the price if you didn't see it. and you were anywhere near san francisco this weekend, you most likely heard it. the roar of the blue angels who wrapped up their three day air show today. here are some of the highlights.

just spectacular shots there. another fleet week attraction drew a long line today at san francisco. piers, 30 and 32. look at this line. these people were waiting for a free tour of one of the amphibia ice carriers, cutters, destroyers

and cruisers docked at the embarcadero. in all, six ships were on display to give people a glimpse into the day to day lives of the sailors serving in the navy and the coast guard. abc7 news.com is your place for all things fleet week. you can watch highlights of the weekend's blue angels shows. we have a link on our homepage page. boy spencer christian joins me now. it was just a spectacular weather. the first couple days it was even comfortable today a little fog there but beautiful outside. you're right about that, j.r. we had great weather leading into the weekend and through most of the weekend until that little bit of fog started to move onshore. >> this afternoon. but it did bring us relief from the heat. so let's take a look at live doppler seven right now. and you can see that we have fog at the coast and some spots of drizzle just offshore. and in just a matter of hours, some light rain will be falling onshore. right now, we're looking at relatively light onshore winds, but bringing cooling relief nonetheless. check out the 24 hour temperature change. most

locations across the bay area are anywhere from nine to about 14 degrees cooler right now than at this time last night. moving along, we'll take a live view from our exploratorium camera looking toward the bay bridge. and these are our current temperature readings. it is 55 in san francisco, oakland, 57, mountain view, 59, 61, san jose, 59 at palo alto, 57 at half moon bay. and the view now from emeryville on a calm and quiet night. other temperature readings at this hour are 54 degrees in santa rosa. novato, 52, mid 50s at napa. well, upper 50s actually at fairfield and livermore concord at 62 degrees. that's our mildest reading at the moment. and as we look across the embarcadero from our rooftop camera, let's take a look at our forecast headlines and here they are, much cooler weather will be with us for the next few days. a light rain and or showers will fall tomorrow, possibly a few lingering into early tuesday morning. we can expect drier and warmer weather developing by midweek. the approaching storm, such as it is, ranks level one on the

exclusive abc7 storm impact scale. a storm of light intensity. so for tomorrow look for periods of light rain or showers mainly a north bay event that will be the wettest region of the bay area with rainfall totals generally only a few hundredths of an inch forecast animation taking us into the overnight hours shows some light showers developing in the north bay by about 6 or 7 a.m. they'll become more widespread and a little bit heavier by late morning around 11 11:30 a.m. and then as that system sweeps southward and eastward, it'll weaken and the intensity of the rainfall will diminish as well. as we get into the evening hours tomorrow, the rain will be just about over, except for a few widely scattered light showers. rainfall totals by tuesday night at 11. again just a few hundredths of an inch, except maybe up at ukiah, where it's possible that over a 10th of an inch will fall high temperatures tomorrow will be mainly in the mid 60s on the coast. we'll see upper 60s to around 70 degrees around the bay shoreline and inland areas will not warm up

very much, only up to about 71 or 72 degrees. so pretty cool day. compare it with the days we've had recently. here's the accuweather seven day forecast tuesday. we'll be partly to mostly cloudy with possibility of a lingering morning shower, but it's not going to be a wet day. sunnier and drier and a little milder on wednesday and thursday and friday will be the warmest days in the seven day forecast period with the inland highs in the low 80s and we'll see some mid 70s around the bay shoreline. then clouds come into the picture next weekend and it cools down just a little bit. but it does not appear that we're expecting any significant rainfall for a while, not after tuesday morning. >> that is j.r. spencer. i don't think anybody's having any problems with those cooler days . yeah all right. thank you so much. well, the blue angels weren't the only air show this weekend. a closer look at the balloon rodeo that colored the sky

tonight, cities across the country, including beverly hills , are beefing up security. this comes as fears that this war in israel could inspire hate crimes or violence closer to home. the san francisco police department says that they are not aware of any threats at this time. the department says they are actively working with state and federal officials on the matter . aaron katersky has more on this story tonight. >> from new york to los angeles, law enforcement officials are worried the brutal war in israel could inspire hate crimes or violence here in the united

strike monday morning after voting down a deal with the company union members and workers at plants in three states are seeking their fair share in wages and other issues. those benefits include better work schedules, health and safety, health care and overtime. 73% of workers voted against the tentative contract deal. and the union says, quote, clearly, we are not there yet on an agreement. a total of three different earthquake shook northern california today. the first one was a preliminary 3.0 maitude quake, which hit around 8:39 a.m, just over four miles west of cobre in lake county, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake was later detected at 230 in the afternoon. that was five miles west of cob. the next one ao at 230 in the afternoon in sonoma county, s a magnitude 3.8 near the geysers . this according to the us geological survey, who also says there were no reports of any
