about the crash at the chinese consulate in san francisco and the moments before police shot and killed the man who slammed his car into the lobby. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ahmad daetz. today, san francisco police said they're not ready to provide any updates on the investigation. and so far, the medical examiner hasn't released the identity of the man killed. >> but still, we are learning more information about the deadly shooting at the consulate on geary boulevard that happened just after 3:00 yesterday afternoon. >> abc7 news reporter loose pena has the new details and joins us live from the newsroom. >> louis yes, emma and dan, the witness we spoke to said the suspect came out of nowhere and initially people inside the chinese consulate thought the suspect was having a medical episode and crashed by accident. but once he came out of the car with a knife in hand, many started to run. she described the suspect as an asian male in his mid-thirties. his videos revealing more details of what happened inside the san francisco chinese consulate on monday. moments after this.

unidentified suspect drove this car through the front doors of the building. >> everyone started freaking out the moment we realized that, like he had a he had a knife in his hand and, um, like, he was, like, bleeding from his head. he wasn't like making. he wasn't making really much sense as guards fought the suspect, they shouted for someone to call police. >> audrey remembers the suspect making a clear request, and when he was able to get out of the car, the first thing he asked was like, where is the ccp? ccp is short for the chinese communist party. audrey ran along with 10 to 15 people to the back of the building where she describes feeling trapped as many hid behind a pillar. >> there were no doors that i could see. there was nowhere to run. like we like no one was able to run out the back of the building. we were just all pushed to a corner as the group was able to exit the building. >> a person claims to have seen a firearm in the back of the suspect's car. minutes later, police arrived, then that's when i heard the gunshots. >> there were two gunshots.

>> the suspect was shot by an officer and later died at the hospital. today, the consulate was closed with multiple guards surrounding the building. and this san francisco police patrol up front. >> i'm lucky i wasn't here yesterday. so yeah, i was hoping that i was going to be able to pick it up. i applied for my visa last thursday. >> james harwell is one of many showing up today with questions. >> there's a lot of speculation , not really know what to think of it. >> this incident comes just five weeks ahead of the apec summit, where china's president will be one of 23 heads of state in san francisco. the bay area council said this incident solidifies the importance of more security at apec. >> safety is paramount and a convening like this, where you've got top leaders, heads of state, you know, top ceos and other foreign dignitaries and guests coming to the city, it serves as a strong reminder that we cannot be complacent on security. >> san francisco's mayor, london breed, confirmed the city's working with the chinese consulate and the state

department to investigate this incident. >> we want to just not jump to any conclusions or speculate until we're clear about how this happened, why and the purpose, of course, you know, in light of so many challenging things that are going on, i mean, security for apec, when they come in november will be tight. >> the suspects identity and motive are still unknown. the san francisco police department said they're investigating this incident and will hold a town hall within ten days of the shooting. in the newsroom. louis pena, abc seven news. >> okay, louis, thank you. happening now in the east bay. a march in support of israel is just getting underway at civic center park next to the walnut creek library on broadway. this is a live picture of people gathering. they are then expected to march through the downtown area. we will have a live report in just a few minutes. but first, let's begin with the latest from the middle east. yes, israel has intensified its strikes targeting gaza, food, fuel and other supplies are cut off in

response to a weekend attack by hamas militants and it's triggered fighting with other terror groups in northern israel. at least 1900 people have died since the fighting broke out early saturday. of course, that number is expected to go much higher. >> president biden says at least 14 us citizens have died in the violence and there are other americans who are being held hostage. >> israel says more than 150 people were kidnaped by hamas. >> the first shipment of ammunition from the united states landed in israel today. >> and president biden addressed the nation today. as you may have heard and promised israel the unwavering support of the united states. >> now, this came after he spoke with israel's prime minister, benjamin netanyahu. abc news reporter melissa adan has a look at the military aid. >> the us is providing. >> we stand with israel. >> president joe biden addressing the nation after the weekend attack on israel by the terrorist group hamas and expressing the country's unwavering support for israel. >> bloody hands of the terrorist

organization hamas, a group whose stated purpose for being is to kill jews. this was an act of sheer evil. >> the president's support for israel, one of america's closest allies, follows dozens of rallies and vigils across the country in support of israel, shut down by, i.e. from the white house to beverly hills, california, to a candlelight vigil in florida honoring the many innocent lives lost. hundreds have been killed in israel and hundreds more palestinians have been killed. in gaza, thousands have been injured on both sides. the president sharing that at least 40 an american citizens were killed during the hamas terror attack. the mother of one missing us citizen, anne, says her son was taken by hamas with a group of others attending a music festival. >> they were fishing a barrel, so in this bomb, shelter, terror came to the door. they were throwing grenades in shooting machur mean guns.

>> the pentagon says the us is offering support to israel's special operations forces. >> we're surging initial military assistance, including ammunition and interceptors to replenish iron dome. we're going to make sure that israel does not run out of these critical assets to defend its cities and its citizens. >> us the department of defense announced a second carrier strike group with several warships will be deployed to the region along with the number of f-15 and f 35 fighter jets being increased in the middle east. melissa don, abc news, los angeles. >> right now in walnut creek, a rally is getting underway to support israel. as we said, abc seven news reporter ansar hassan is live with more on that answer . >> dan, like you said, this crowd gathering behind me getting ready for a march and rally through downtown walnut creek. the message, they say, is that they stand in solidarity. the state of israel. so many bay area families have connections to the region and concern about the safety of their families in israel and in gaza.

warplanes hammer gaza in retaliation for this weekend's surprise hamas attack, many bay area families are dealing with the death and destruction that comes with war. >> they are you know, they're scared. they're worried. they are right now struggling with no electricity 8-80 they don't have access to food and water. they sound very desperate. >> is a palestinian american. he's been talking to his relatives who live in gaza. >> and every day it's been i lost a home to a shelling or i lost a family member. this morning. a friend of mine texted me and said that she lost 14 members of her family in one israeli strike. >> more than 2 million palestinians live in the gaza strip, a tiny enclave that's been under israeli military occupation since 1967. and a complete land, sea and air blockade led by israel since 2006, zuckert says. palestine organizations denounce all forms of terrorism, but says going forward, solutions have to be rooted in the realities on the ground.

include people who are unable to provide for their own personal safety or medical care due to either substance use or serious mental illnesses. the change allows courts to take testimony from trained mental health professionals to determine whether someone needs to be in a conservatorship to receive treatment. san francisco mayor london breed responded, saying the bill, quote, will enable us to provide life saving behavioral health support to those who are struggling in our city and on our streets. >> oakland's police commission has sent a list of the top seven candidates for police chief to city leaders. one of them is ousted chief lauren armstrong, who was fired eight months ago. abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley has the latest developments at oakland's police commission has issued its recommendations for the top seven candidates for oakland police chief. >> out of the 20 who have applied so far. the only name that's been public is that of leronne armstrong, the former police chief whom oakland's mayor, shengtao fired in

february, alleging he mishandled misconduct charges against a police officer last month, an independent report cleared armstrong of any wrongdoing. >> doing i feel good. i feel vindicated today. >> armstrong released a statement saying i believe that the mayor should rehire me as chief of police based upon the clear evidence that i acted properly and did not violate any department policies. >> this should be a no brainer for the mayor and the police commission and we hope that they do the right thing and right a past wrong and put him back where he belongs as chief of police. >> but there are six other candidates still on that short list and there could be more names since more candidates can still throw their hat in the ring until the end of this week . the mayor's office declined to comment today on the list of candidates, including armstrong, so as to not compromise the integrity of the search for a police chief. since recruitment is open until friday, they said the police commission is expected to start formal

consideration of all of the candidates later this month in the east bay. i'm leslie brinkly, abc7 news. >> alameda county authorities have launched a new campaign expected to help combat human trafficking. >> this is a public safety issue to this is a priority for our office and if you are trafficking pimping, it's a new day for you in alameda county. >> that's district attorney pamela price talking about the new crackdown, which includes billboards. now posted at the oakland airport and other locations. the idea is to combat human trafficking. coming through alameda county's largest transportation center. the new ads are posted in english and spanish in partnership with the city of oakland. and as part of the crackdown, mayor shengtao is expected to launch the city's own advisory council on human trafficking next week. >> i'm meteorologist sandhya patel. we have spotty showers moving in tonight. i'll let you know how long they are going to hang around. coming up when abc seven news at
